Abstract:
The paper seeks to offer an expert examination and brief overview of the development of Literary Comparison as a separate scientific discipline in the Slovak Republic, to present its current status and to consider the possibilities for its further realization in the future. The beginnings of Literary Comparison understood as a methodological paradigm in Slovakia can be traced back to the early works of Mikuláš Bakoš from the early second half of the twentieth century, whose primary researches are in the domain of historical poetics, formalism and structuralism. Decades later, the well-known Slovak theorist Dionýz Ďurišin reflects, and at the same time creatively shapes the postulates of his papers by building on his already well-known theory of special inter-literary communities, inter-literary centers and of characteristics of the inter-literary process. Drawing on national literature as a concept, Dionýz Ďurišin develops a whole theoretical model of rethinking world literature, and his terminological categories also inspire the academic sculptor Ludwig Korkoš, who “revives” them in an artistic way in the nineties of the 20th century. Today, in the Slovak Republic there is a Center for Research on the Heritage of Dionýz Ďurišin at the Faculty of Pedagogy at Comenius University Bratislava under the leadership of prof. Maria Bátorová; while the subject of Literary Comparatics is taught as a compulsory subject at the Faculty of Arts at the same University in Bratislava under the guidance of prof. Zvonko Taneski, and also an elective at the Universities “Constantine the Philosopher” in Nitra, “Matej Bel” in Banska Bystrica and “Pavol Jozef Šafárik” in Prešov. In 2015, the Czech-Slovak Association for Comparative Literature was formed, which recently became a full member of the International Association for Comparative Literature AILC / ICLA. The Slovak headquarters of the Association are at the Institute of World Literature at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and the president of the Slovak section of the same Association is prof. Róbert Gáfrik. The Association organizes domestic scientific conferences and congresses and regularly participates in appropriate scientific symposia abroad. In the last decade new representative collections have been published devoted to literary comparison in several academic centers in Slovakia. A good platform for presenting and publishing new posters from comparative literary science has become the prestigious scientific journal World Literature Studies, which is periodically published by the Institute of World Literature in Bratislava, and its status and prospects are growing as the magazine is registered, i.e. indexed in several important world scientific databases.

Abstract:
The IUPAC-sponsored Conference on Solid State Chemistry (SSC 2008), the eighth conference in the series since 1986, was held in Bratislava, Slovakia 6-11 July 2008. The first Solid State Chemistry Conference held in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, was a nucleus of this series, which has grown over the years and resulted in well-established meetings organized biannually, either in Czech or Slovak Republic. The reader can find examples of feedback on this series in the back issues of Pure and Applied Chemistry (PAC), which comprise the papers and opinions of invited speakers of the fifth conference in this series, also IUPAC-sponsored "Solid State Chemistry 2002".SSC 2008 focused on the branches of solid-state and materials chemistry. The event attracted not only scientists but also the producers of new materials and technologies. Over 200 participants from 29 countries representing Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa attended the conference and presented 18 invited talks, 73 lectures, and 146 posters. The scientific program comprised the following seven sessions:- Synthesis and Characterization of Materials- Crystal, Electronic, and Magnetic Structure- Electrochemistry and Molten Salts- Chemistry of Glasses- Novel Inorganic Materials and Nanomaterials- Layered Compounds, Clathrates, and Intercalates- Deposited Films and Surface ChemistryThe invited lectures together with the rigorous choice of further influential lectures, published in this special issue of PAC, cover each topic of the conference and have been an excellent base for the discussions and represent hints for future development in the field. In addition, the lecturers were given the option of submitting manuscripts of research articles, communications, or reviews based upon their lectures or posters to Chemical Papers and Central European Journal of Chemistry (CEJC). The papers accepted by CEJC have already appeared in Vol. 7, Number 2, June 2009. The conference was organized by the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology of Slovak University of Technology, and the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University. The conference continues to provide a friendly atmosphere for the exchange of new results and ideas among groups active in different areas of solidstate and materials chemistry. The 9th Conference on Solid State Chemistry will be held in mid-September 2010 in Prague, Czech Republic. A Web page containing an online "expression of interest" form is already active: www.ssc2010.cz. Abstract:
It has all started 10 years ago, at my first WON CA Europe conference in Istanbul in 2008, where I became amazed by so many general practitioners, who performed and presented their scientific work there. However it took me 7 years since the idea to start my PhD studies until it´s final completion in 2017. My PhD journey wasn´t straight, but rather twisty, with 2 interruptions. In 2011 I started to earn my basic research skills at 2 courses. The first one was the European General Practice Research Network (EG PRN) course in Nice and the second University of Crete´s research workshop in Slovakia lead by Professor Christos Lionis. The easiest part of my PhD studies was the clinical one – administering questionnaire and performing spirometry with my patients at my rural general practice. I also enjoyed teaching medical students at undergraduate as well as postgraduate level. I gave lectures at national conferences and published articles about general medicine in Slovak scientific journals, focusing on prevention, patient safety and respiratory diseases, especially COPD. I also contributed to two medical text books. My research was presented as posters or oral presentations at 3 WON CA Europe conferences, where I found a great space for sharing research ideas and results. Final results of my PhD thesis are going to be presented at Krakow conference. Even though I was a fruitful author of publications, reaching the goal of an international publication was the most difficult part for me, not achievable without a help of experienced colleague, Austrian general practitioner, Professor Gustav Kamenski.

Despite renewed interest in the illustrated posters of World War I brought about by the commemoration of the war’s centennial, few extant works in either the academic or public history sectors offer comprehensive explorations of individual posters. This article provides a microhistory of The Greatest Mother in the World (1918), an impactful lithographic poster designed by New Jersey muralist Alonzo Earl Foringer and inspired by a slogan from a Princeton graduate turned advertising executive named Courtland Smith. Printed and distributed in the millions, Foringer’s poster reached a level of mass appeal unsurpassed by any other piece of American visual propaganda produced in the war years. A detailed look at the background and impact of this important poster explores a lesser-known and understudied aspect of World War I history, while also affording an interdisciplinary research model that can be utilized for future studies of additional posters and their place in American visual culture.

The Indonesian government has adapted the genre-based approach designing curriculum, thus both English teachers and students need to master the genre aspects: the objective or social function of a text, text structure, and language features. This study aimed at describing the rhetorical pattern of Irwandi Yusuf – Nova Iriansyah’s posters during the gubernatorial election in 2017. The object of this study was the strategies used to convince the argument or namely rhetorical pattern. The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. To obtain the data the researchers used document as an instrument in this study. The result of this study revealed that the posters applied ten strategies: form-based strategy, emotion-based strategy, attention management strategy: use of dramatic statement, using repetition in the form of image and slogan, sketch model participation, detailed benefit change, self-efficacy realized via image, offer further information or services strategy: indirect offers, use slogan, refers to a broader picture, refer to the legal status of the campaign. These strategies that were implemented in the candidates’ poster was to convince the message relied on the poster to the target readers. Further, the strategies implied have followed some strategy offered by Barron (2012). Therefore, different advertisement, as well as a poster from the different region, have a different pattern in organizing the ideas and in convincing the target readers. In conclusion, by exploring the rhetoric of the local advertisement, it can expand the material of teaching text structure, language feature and social function of the advertisement text from a different region or country due to the genre is socially constructed.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the description of the composition of the means of expression, traditionally considered purely verbal, but used in social advertising in visual and verbal-visual form. The aim of the work is to establish the degree of prevalence of verbal and visual forms of traditional types of figures in modern social advertising and to describe their role in the implementation of the author’s idea. The relevance of the research is due to the increased interest in the study of polycode texts and the formation of the visual stylistics of the text. The material was 4000 posters of environmental topics collected from various media banks on the Internet by a continuous sampling method. The authors conclude that contamination and gradation are used only in visual form in environmental advertising. Contamination consists in combining parts of different images into a single image, which, however, does not receive a common name. Gradation is based on contrarian relations, with its help the transformation of some objects or states into others is shown in dynamics. Verbal-visual techniques include antithesis, parallelism, amphibolism. Antitheses are often based on contextual antonyms, concretized by the presence of an image, and in some cases such antitheses are qualified as quasi-logical. Parallelism can be represented by both verbal and purely visual forms in the form of placing two pictures similar in content on one poster. With the help of amphiboly, a paradoxical meaning is given to the slogan, since the visual and verbal series come into conflict. Finally, only in verbal form are ellipsis and anaphora used. The ellipsis makes the poster text as concise, energetic and convenient as possible for quick reading. Anaphora allows you to emphasize the element of the slogan that carries the main semantic load. The other types of stylistic figures (inversion, frame, chiasmus, etc.) are quite rare in environmental social advertising and generally do not affect the nature of its image system.

Abstract:
The article conveys the need to improve the efficiency of social advertisement. The relevance of the research undertaken is due to the lack of variety and low efficiency of most social-issue related advertisements, placed on posters and billboards, and the requirement for systematic assessment of impact means circulating in advertising. The authors dwell on the analysis of one of the most popular methods of increasing efficiency, namely blending, which is the formation of new words by combining their parts in unusual for the Russian language ways. In advertising this method is used mainly to enhance the expressiveness of the text due to the emergence of unusual associations that are easily created with this technique rather than to name new objects and phenomena. In the field of social advertising, purely graphic blends are distinguished, they are generated by the introduction of various graphic highlights of words or their parts, thus giving the slogan additional meaning; textual-and-graphic blends are constructed by imposing a part of one word onto another; text blends are presented in combining the name of the subject with the evaluative component. The authors also consider it reasonable to single out subject-logical contamination, the case when two completely different images of objects (or word forms) are merged into one image (or word form). Finally, visual blending is distinguished, parts of two objects are combined in one image to create a new image that realizes the idea of a poster; in textual-and-visual blending the meaning of a new combined visual image is explained with the text; lexical blending is formed by combining paronyms (sometimes rather loosely interpreted).

Clearly a favorite slogan of the self-described “Peruvian Revolution,” this saying appeared frequently on posters and in newspaper notices. Although linked to Velasco's agrarian reform program and peasant organizations like the Confederación Nacional Agraria (CNA), which emerged from the plan, this aphorism was said to have originated with José Ga-Mejía, La reforma agraria en el Perú (Lima: Instituto de Estudios Peruanos, 1980). This book systematizes and analyzes the visual material of “red” and “white” propaganda from the period of the Russian Civil war. Representation of war is considered through the prism of images of its participants, found on posters, cartoons, postcards, leaflets, propaganda porcelain and other visual artifacts of the period. The classification of images is based on the social group affiliation of the depicted characters. Given such an approach, the focus is on representatives of groups — participants of civil confrontation, typical actors, visual clichés of “friends” and “enemies”. The work is carried out using an extensive source base concerning the ideological confrontation of that time, domestic and foreign literature devoted to the visualization of the events taking place then.

Abstract:
Our era is characterized by a significant increase in the means and methods of communication that allow companies to declare themselves, promote their products, stimulate sales, and encourage consumers to buy. At the same time, the company's advertising discourse risks becoming incoherent, loaded with contradictory or ambiguous messages. Conscious use of language is necessary for the advertiser to master communication. This article is an attempt to consider the impact of the use of imperative phrases in advertising slogans on the decision-making process of the consumer. The article analyzes modern French advertising slogans containing the imperative form of the verb. The sample consists of seven advertising posters created between 2012 and 2020, the thematic group of which is tourism advertising. The analysis considers the iconic parts of advertising as reinforcing the strategy of persuasion of advertising slogans. The analysis allowed us to characterize the authors of advertising posters, the target audience, as well as the relationship between actants. The type of arguments used in the discourse for effective agitation of the target group was considered and determined. The main results of the analysis showed that the structure of the slogan depends on the advertising theme. The use of an imperative sentence in advertising slogans allows establishing a direct and living connection between the advertiser and his audiences, create the illusion of a dialogue, draw attention to the object of advertising, as well as convince a potential customer of the need to choose the advertised object or service.

Abstract:
The reviewed publication, published in 2019 by the British publishing house Archaeopress, is a collection of texts based on papers and posters presented at the international conference under the same title held in Prague in April 2018. This meeting brought together archaeologists from many European countries – including Croatia, Czechia, Germany, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Italy, and Hungary – who conduct research on the early-modern period and the pertaining material culture. Both this event and the book in question were a response to the needs of the academic community, due to the ongoing development of historical archaeology in Europe and an increase in research on artefacts and other evidence recovered during fieldwork related to this. The time-frame of the post-medieval period differs slightly across particular European countries, encompassing artefacts from between the 15th and 18th centuries.

Abstract:
The current study explores the phenomena of election propaganda photos. A political slogan is viewed as one of the most important ways for political parties and candidates to communicate with voters, particularly when party identification is declining. Political advertising in Iraq began with the use of posters, flyers, and other printed materials. The present study sheds light on how candidates and political parties in Iraq communicate with their audiences. It studies Iraqi election propaganda photos from a pragmatic point of view and takes Yuleʼs theory (1996) of presupposition as a model for data analysis. The data concerning the candidates are chosen from different Iraqi provinces to investigate those electoral campaigns pragmatically. Furthermore, this study deals with various aspects in terms of the expressions used for the purpose of influencing the voter's decision for the right candidate.

Abstract:
The expression of resistance against the authorities during the street protests of the so-called snow revolution in the years 2011-2012 reached a level of mass creativity and visuality previously and since unrecorded in Russian social life and, despite its lack of success, it is worth attention due to its openness and intensity. During the snow revolution a certain corpus of texts (slogans) was shaped, with repeatability typical for folklore – it was a recurrence of themes, motifs, characters, linguistic tricks, images, textual models. The aim of analyzing selected protest slogans is to showcase contexts that constitute the source of oppositional expression on the textual (slogan on a poster), visual (image on a poster) and object (artifacts) level. The examples of the protest creativity presented in the article prove that verbal, visual and material ways of resistance realized functions typical for political folklore, such as integrating the rebels, mocking the stronger enemy as a defense strategy, unmasking the crimes of the government, and expressing the expectations of the protesters.

Abstract:
The paper examines the connections between bilingualism and the name-semiotic landscape, focusing especially on the name-semiotic landscape of Slovakian settlements populated by Hungarian minorities as well as on name laws affecting the visual use of proper names in Slovakia. The name-semiotic landscape consists of proper names (especially personal names, place names and the names of institutions) that appear on name signs, notices in public places and other surfaces (e.g. on posters, wall surfaces, gravestones, tableaux). The author explores the extent to which Slovakian settlements with Hungarian minorities respect minority language rights in the visual use of proper names; whether or not native name use is spreading; and also examines the presence of signs and notices including Hungarian proper names. The paper describes the semiotic landscape characteristic of Slovakian settlements populated by Hungarian minorities with respect to each name type: personal names, place names and the names of institutions.

Abstract:
The POLYCHAR 16: World Forum on Advanced Materials, organized by the University of Lucknow, was held from 17 to 21 February 2008 in the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The annual POLYCHAR conferences have been sponsored by IUPAC for several years and are known for combining the broad field of materials sciences with a clear focus on polymeric materials (the name "POLYCHAR" is derived from the term "polymer characterization"). POLYCHAR 16 was supported by many scientific associations and industries such as IUPAC, Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) (Trieste, Italy), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Department of Biotechnology (DBT) (India), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) (India), Reliance Industries Ltd. (India), Department of Science and Technology (India), Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Uttar Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (UPCST) (India), Lucknow Chapter, Materials Research Society of India (MRSI), and University of Lucknow. As in past years, POLYCHAR puts emphasis on the quality of research presented - in contrast to maximizing the number of participants. The areas covered include nanomaterials and smart materials; natural and biodegradable materials and recycling; materials synthesis; polymers for energy; rheology, solutions, and processing; mechanical properties and performance; characterization and structure-property relationships; biomaterials and tissue engineering; dielectric and electrical properties; surfaces, interfaces, and tribology; and predictive methods. Symptomatically, the number of papers on "green" science was higher than at POLYCHAR 15 last year in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro. There were a total of 292 registered participants from 35 countries (Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Fiji, UK, France, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Mauritius, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sri Lanka, Slovakia, South Africa, Ukraine, USA, Uzbekistan, and Venezuela). This reflects the philosophy of POLYCHAR to provide an international forum to encourage young scientists and advanced students to present their scientific work and give them the opportunity to meet with colleagues and well-known scientists to discuss their results, exchange experiences, and make new contacts, in particular, international ones. Many industrial contacts and much international cooperation with exchange of students and scientists have resulted from this and earlier POLYCHAR meetings. This conference volume represents only a small fraction of the multitude of contributions from different parts of materials science - 48 oral contributions and 170 posters. Many of the contributions have review character, some represent excellent original contributions. Only a small number could be selected for this volume because of the limited space that is available. All this was possible with the sponsorship of IUPAC. Highlights of the conference were the Paul J. Flory Research Award (ex aequo) to Prof. Jiasong He, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; the International Materials Research Award to Dr. Rameshvar Adhikari, Tribhuvan University, Katmandu, Nepal; and numerous awards for young scientists and students, including the IUPAC Poster Award. Special Prof. Brar's 60th Birthday Celebration Awards were given to IUPAC poster prize winners. The next POLYCHAR will be hosted by Jean-Marc Saiter, University of Rouen, Rouen, France in April 2009.Poonam TandonConference Executive Secretary and Co-editor
