The Slovak World Congress, an umbrella organization representing almost all Slovak associations, organizations, and individuals in the diaspora during the Cold War, played a significant role in the Helsinki process related to the human rights agenda. Delegations from the Slovak World Congress were present at all Helsinki Follow-Up meetings in Belgrade, Madrid, and Vienna, presenting comprehensive memoranda that included an enumeration and analysis of serious violations of human, religious, and national rights in Slovakia during the last two decades of the Cold War. The paper conveys information on the current state of Czech and Slovak comparatist thought as regards its methods, thematical orientation and institutional base. Czech and Slovak comparative research has always been a complementary whole embracing, on the one hand, the tradition of Slavonic studies grounded in structural aesthetics (S. Wollman) and, on the other, the endeavour to develop the theory of interliterarines and interdisciplinary study of the world literature (D. Ďurišin). Much to our regret, the disruption of this “symbiosis” at the turn of 1990s resulted in losing contacts with the

After the end of the First World War, the most important event in the history of our country was the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic on October 28, 1918. Professor Deyl repeatedly spoke about the need to establish a Czechoslovak Ophthalmological Society. Only his successor, professor. O. Lešer implemented Deyl's idea and, in agreement with the heads of the Bratislava and Brno departments of ophthalmology, convened the opening general meeting of the Czechoslovak Ophthalmological Society on April 3, 1926, in the auditorium of the Czech department of ophthalmology with the participatio

In the conditions of widespread informatization of the communicative space, a new paradigm of communication is gradually being formed. The paradigm can be defined as interactive. In the modern world, virtual communication in social networks has become an integral part of the functioning of society and individuals themselves. Often it is not one of the possible forms of communication, but absolutely the main one — both private and institutional. The fundamental principle of network culture is its installation on communication, interaction, dialogue. The virtual network largely repeats the pract

In 1970, the Third European Congress of Anaesthesiology was held in Prague. Paradoxically, many leading Czech and Slovak representatives of the field were absent, having emigrated to the West, predominantly to the Netherlands, following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. This emigration, however, did not result in Czechoslovak anaesthesiologists being entirely disconnected from their former colleagues or losing touch with the domestic development of medicine. Despite the Cold War and the Iron Curtain, medical knowledge continued to be exchanged between the West and the East.

The study approaches negotiations and power pressures associated with Czechoslovak participation in the Seventh World Congress of Sociology in Varna (1970), the first and only ISA congress held in the Eastern Bloc. The congress, which was of fundamental importance in this period, was taken as a showcase of Marxist sociology and was intended to significantly strengthen the position of East European sociologists in the international academy. The passage of the Taft-Hartley Act, also called the Labor-Management Relations Act, over President Harry Truman’s veto on June 23, 1947, ended the national policy established with the enactment of the Wagner Act (National Labor Relations Act) in 1935. Under this policy, the federal government had supported workers’ self-organization into unions and for collective bargaining. Unions increased their membership more than fourfold between 1933 and 1945 thanks in part to the Wagner Act, the friendliness of the New Deal Democratic administration of Franklin D.
