Abstract:
Distribution can be defined as a way of goods from producer to consumer. In wine production industry there exist several distribution channels, through which wine is distributed to the final consumer. Aim of this paper is to identify and compare advantages and disadvantages of particular distribution channels for wine sales related to a small wine-producer.Distribution of wine to the final consumer is done through dealers represented by retail chains, specialized wine-shops, hotels, and restaurants. In a smaller scale it is done through internet sales, own outlets and wine auctions. According to the research of Focus agency, Marketing & Social Research, done in 2009, customers buy wine mostly in retail chains and decide on sort and quality of wine directly at the moment of purchase. Selection is based except wine quality also on the shape of the bottle, etiquette, and also cork (consumers explicitly prefer cork, and the screw top rather discourages). Certain part of customers – specifically those, who are more acquainted with wine – buy wine in special wine-shops. The research shows a decrease of direct wine-sales.When using services of independent trade organizations, producers have to control the intensity of commercial activities and knowledge of technical characteristics of products. Small wine producers, though, do not have to use this distribution channel, and can focus only on direct sales. For some small wine producers, specifically those operating in the areas with an extended possibility for wine-tourism, this channel can be more suitable and effective than using retail chains. This way of distribution does not require extensive start-up investments, it is directly dependent on producers own effort, and can be done as a supplementary activity to the main source of income.Regardless the particular choice of a distribution channel by a small wine producer it is necessary to be judged not only from the viewpoint of its advantages and disadvantages, but also by a detailed analysis of costs of sales.

Abstract:
This study proposed a dual fuel operation of a mix of gasoline and producer gas from coal gasification on the spark ignition engine. The experiment was carried out on a constant load with variations in speed for single fuel operation of gasoline and dual fuel operation of a mix of gasoline and producer gas to see the influence on speed, torque, power, and braking (effective pressure). The power produced was compared to power produced by the single fuel of producer gas that has been reported in the literature. The result shows an increase of speed would increase torque, power, and braking (effective pressure) for single fuel operation of gasoline and dual fuel operation of a mix of gasoline and producer gas. The power operation of dual fuel of a mix of and gasoline and producer gas will decrease by about 10.9% compared to operation of single fuel of gasoline, and the power operation of the single fuel of producer gas will decrease by about 20% compared to the operation of the single fuel of gasoline. The maximum shaft power produced by dual fuel operation is 1.49 kW at a load of 5 kg and a speed of about 3,500 rpm.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper was to determine if small craft producer businesses need strategic marketing to survive. Existing literature on strategic marketing and the craft industry in South Africa (SA) was used to answer the following question: do small craft businesses need strategic marketing to survive? Since craft producers lack access to the market, they face major challenges in marketing their products successfully. Secondary research was used to determine the need of strategic marketing by craft producers in SA. Strategic marketing is crucial since craft producers must research changes developments taking place in the market and to be able to develop an appropriate marketing strategy to sustain their businesses. This will enable craft producers to identify customers and to formulate an appropriate marketing strategy to reach their chosen target market. The research revealed it enables them to identify customers and to formulate an appropriate marketing strategy to reach their chosen target market. The study revealed that craft producers do need strategic marketing to survive in South Africa

Abstract:
The oil palm (elaeis guneensis) is a very important economic crop in West Africa where it is native. The fruit bunch contains 23 to 30% oil and is the highest yielding of all vegetable oil crops. Palm oil is the second most important vegetable oil in world consumption and the first to be commercialized internationally. Africa and indeed Nigerian was the world’s highest producer of palm oil prior to 1961. Today, Nigeria is the fourth largest producer after Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. One of the main reasons given for this fall is lack of efficient mechanized processing equipment for the small-scale producers who produce over 80% of the country’s palm oil. Their methods of production are labour intensive, batch, tedious, inefficient, and produce poor quality oil, have low throughput, unable to extract palm kernel alongside palm oil and so productivity is low and products (palm oil and palm kernel) lack competitiveness. This work has developed a mechanized oil palm fruit processing mill with six fully integrated systems for extracting good quality palm oil and palm kernel, while utilizing process wastes as the main source of heat energy. Each system/unit is expected to operate at the best quoted system efficiency. Tests are ongoing to determine and confirm these efficiencies.

Abstract:
In today’s food-retail industry, it is very hard for small-sized agricultural producers to become suppliers of large chain stores, as these require products in large volumes and with consistent quality. Participating in producer organisations (PO-s) and selling collectively is an alternate solution for them. Producer organisations receive support from the EU. On the other hand, very small producers are even unable to successfully join PO-s. The present Hungarian case-study examines the attitudes of PO-s to the membership of small producers. We were looking for the answer that how it is worth for small-sized producers to sell through PO-s. Without the organisations, mostly the conventional sales channels (i.e. markets, small shops) or short supply chains remain for them as sale opportunities. According to the most general and comprehensive opinion of our survey, rather the reliability and keeping of the rules are important for the PO-s, and not the plant size. Specific costs of PO-s are higher in the case of small producers, but discrimination was fundamentally atypical.

Abstract:
<p>This thesis looks at Cepicafé, a Fairtrade/organic coffee producer organisation in Piura, Peru. It discusses the contributions made to empowerment of the members, and identifies some of the obstacles to participation and empowerment, both within the organisation and outside.</p><p>Small-scale coffee producers often find themselves in a vulnerable and disempowered position in relation to the world market. The Fairtrade and organic market initiatives focus on improving trade relations and demanding social, economic and environmental standards in production. They only work with organised producers, hence my subject for the analysis is a producer organisation. Cepicafé's aim is sustainable development, improving quality of life and eradication poverty among small-scale producers in Piura. This will involve a process of empowerment, as poverty is also considered to be powerlessness and voicelessness.</p><p>The theoretical, conceptual and analytical foundation for this thesis is concerned with empowerment through participation and collective action. Empowerment is seen to be a process which involves enabling social, political and psychological power. Power is considered to be a fluid concept and actors are seen to hold varying degrees of these powers, relative to the time, place and relations they find themselves in. The ultimate goal is collective empowerment. This involves participation aimed at achieving radical change in the producers' circumstances. Hence, there is a need to include political claims and confront forces outside of the organisation. Cepicafé's role in a multi-levelled, global/local network presents a great potential for this.</p><p>The empirical data aims at showing the research participants' multiple realities. Knowledge is produced through interviews, observation and informal conversations with coffee producers and staff in Cepicafé during a two months long field work in Piura, Peru in 2007.</p><p>The analysis looks at firstly the services provided by Cepicafé as a way of strengthening social power. Commercialisation, credit support, and technical assistance and knowledge transfers are the main functional areas through with support is given. However, as the producers in the organisation are a heterogeneous group with reference to agency and socio-economic status, both perceived and actual benefits vary. Second, information flows and knowledge transfers related to decision-making as well as the fluidity of power relations amongst actors is put under scrutiny in order to understand the producers' access to participation and political power, which is an important step towards empowerment. The mentioned heterogeneity, a lack of understanding of issues related to Fairtrade and the market, as well as existing power relations between the actors at the local level are seen to affect the ability to participate in decisionmaking. The organisation seems also to mainly focus on service provision, and does not really engage in political advocacy. There is a need to consolidate the efforts among the different levels in the multi-levelled network that Cepicafé is a part of, in order to also include the producers in this struggle.</p>

Abstract:
The research analyzes the aspect of commercialization from the small producer perspective. According to the agricultural census, 80% of farms devoted to rice production are under 20 hectares, representing 50% of the total area occupied in rice production and generate 49% of the national total production (Chiriboga, 2008).Marketing systems are strongly linked to forms of financing, so that these mechanisms are named as an institutional trading system that allows to understand the close relationship between the actors that finance along the rice chain. In such an institutional system we observe how the act of exchange goes beyond economic term and creates a social structure of continuous and prolonged interaction. This way we can see how the economic action is embedded in the non-economic relations, institutions, and thus the exchange occurs in an institutionalized environment. The institutional system is characterized by rules, norms, conventions, trust, reciprocity, power and inequality. The aim of the thesis is to show how the small farmer faces the commercialization of its production conditioned by informal funding an institutional system that develops with the other actors in the rice value chain and determine if this system, characterized by the economic exchange in a non-economic social, which can generates benefits or losses to small farmers

Abstract:
Thesis: S.B., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, May, 2020<br>Cataloged from the official PDF of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 40-41).<br>As global energy demand grows and climate change becomes an ever-evolving phenomenon, it is imperative that current energy systems are re-evaluated, and new energy systems begin to penetrate global markets. In the developing world, a number of factors make small-scale biomass to power systems an interesting proposition. One such iteration of this technology involves novel producer gas cleanup and tar removal, where instead of using chemical processes, the system employs rich partial combustion through auto-ignition to destroy tars in vapor form above 300°C. This investigation serves to technically and financially analyze the feasibility of this system using experimental data found through testing of the cleanup engine to inform the theoretical design of the remainder of the system. 22kWe was selected as the system electric power output. Based on these results, it was determined that a 3.08-liter engine would be necessary for cleanup, and a 4.58-liter engine would be necessary for downstream power generation at 22kWe. This corresponds to a capital cost of $9,600, which is 34% of the retail price of current similar systems. This results in a levelized cost of energy range of $0.07 per kWh to $0.34 per kWh depending on the cost of biomass feedstock. This range is large for a levelized cost of energy, but shows that this system can be financially competitive in certain settings depending on the local fuel cost, proximity to biomass feedstock, and electricity needs..<br>by Jonathan A. Abstract:
Daí a necessidade de políticas públicas relacionadas ao crédito agrícola e à assistência técnica, que favoreçam a pequena produção familiar, melhorando assim a condição econômica e social, para garantir a permanência dos reassentados.<br>In this paper, we have carried on a study on small-scale producers of the Rural Resettlement in Rosana, which is located in Euclides da Cunha Paulista County. Most of this resettlement is formed by small-scale producers, which were formely islanders and riverside in habitants. These were moved on to the resettlement,in view of the construction of the Rosana hydroelectric power station in the Paranapanema River. This research aims to understand the socio-envionmental and economic aspects, as well as to identifify how environmental variables were considered in the implant period of resettlement, and, later on, which was the possible care referring to environmental matters from both the resettled people and the public power. Besides, we have verified these future perspectives of the resettled people's staying. In the research, we have observed that the main economic activity is the cattle husbandry in the Rosana Rural Resettlement. The resettled people complement their income with their retirement salaries, and with temporay - job wages at the Alcidia Distillery and nearby as well. The agrovillage happened to exercise another function: the presence of stores, health and education services for both its own neighborhood's inhabitants as well as for the Alcidia Alcohol Distillery workers. Regarding the environmental matters, we have verified that the environmental variables haven't been considered since its implant. There is an absence of public agencies referring to those matters, and to technical assistance as well, which could compromise the future perspectives of the resettled people. Therefore, there is a lack of public policies in relation to agricultural credit and technical assistance, which, if implemented, would favor the family's small-scale production, in order to improve the economical and social conditions, guaranteeing the resettled people's staying.<br>Orientador: Rosângela Aparecida de Medeiros Hespanhol<br>Coorientador: Célia Maria Santos Vieira de Medeiros<br>Banca: Antonio César Leal<br>Banca: Elpídio Serra<br>Mestre

Abstract:
Crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a worldwide crisis. Various sectors of life are affected by this crisis, including small businesses. This research reveals how the producer of Batik "Dewi Kunthi" Sleman, Yogyakarta, which is a micro-enterprise, survives the crisis. Researchers used qualitative methods by digging data in depth from critical sources, making observations, and looking for relevant literature. This research used Paul Argenti's concept in overcoming crises and Harold Lasswell's Model of Communication. The results showed that the group experienced frustration when hit by a crisis. None of the consumers bought their product, and the production process stopped for nearly two months. However, they seemed to have the toughness to face a crisis. They not only used the steps suggested by Argenti in dealing with the crisis but also went beyond it. Dewi Kunthi Batik Group diversifies its products and intensifies communication both internally and externally.

Abstract:
A methodology is presented for studying the effects of automobile emission policies on the design decisions of profit-seeking automobile producers in a free-entry oligopoly market. The study does not attempt to model short-term decisions of specific producers. Instead, mathematical models of engineering performance, consumer demand, cost, and competition are integrated to predict the effects of design decisions on manufacturing cost, demand, and producer profit. Game theory is then used to predict vehicle designs that producers would have economic incentive to produce at market equilibrium under several policy scenarios. The methodology is illustrated with three policy alternatives for the small car market: corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) regulations, carbon dioxide emissions taxes, and diesel fuel vehicle quotas. Interesting results are derived, for example, it is predicted that in some cases a stiffer regulatory penalty can result in lower producer costs because of competition. This mathematical formulation establishes a link between engineering design, business, and marketing through an integrated optimization model that is used to provide insight necessary to make informed environmental policy.

Abstract:
India, the world’s largest producer of cotton, contains more than 4 million cotton farms that are less than 5 acres. These farms are incapable of large-scale mechanization due to small farm size and irregular farm shape. A previous team developed a handheld, roller-based picking device that demonstrated increased performance over similar products. However, a significant improvement in productivity requires increasing picking speed through mechanization as well as increasing worker cotton carrying capacity. We present a system that utilizes the roller-based picking device in tandem with a compressive storage bag and an efficient carrier. Through modeling and initial testing, the system demonstrates a two times (2X) improvement in worker productivity over current methods. This paper characterizes the cotton picking process, details the modules of the integrated system, and suggests further procedural improvements for greater increases in worker productivity.

Abstract:
Three syngases were selected from customer sites and the engine performance test was conducted on a single cylinder test engine (SCTE) to explore the engine operating limits and investigate the combustion characteristics for the simulation model development. Syngas has a wide range of lambda between the misfire and the detonation compared to conventional natural gas. Combustion of syngas 1 having no CH4 showed unique characteristics which are different from syngas 3. It appears that even a small amount of CH4 in the fuel would be important to lower the rate of the main branching reaction of hydrogen and mitigate the explosive reaction of the hydrogen. Lean operating limit of the tested syngas was observed when LFS (Laminar Flame Speed) and AFT (Adiabatic Flame Temperature) become around 5∼7 cm/s and 1660 ∼ 1720°C.

Abstract:
Small scale gasification is a promising technology for bioenergy generation. Reciprocating engines are usually combined with downdraft gasifiers, nevertheless this approach is associated with high emissions, in particular CO and NOx and with a limited co-generation potential. MGT technology, rapidly improved during the last years, offers the possibility to reduce the levels of pollutants in the exhaust. Moreover they offer some other advantages in the small size range, such as a higher exhaust gas flow at higher temperatures, while maintaining a similar net electric efficiency. Evaluating the possibility to couple a MGT with a gasifier, the quality of the producer gas is also a relevant issue. In this work an overview of the typical gas quality produced by existing small scale gasifiers is carried out; moreover, a review regarding the syngas combustion in GT is realized, considering GT requirements related to gas composition. Co-firing with natural gas is considered, in order to reduce the modification needed to the engine. An evaluation of the proper range of mixing is then carried out. The performances of a commercial 100 kWel MGT are then simulated by means of an “in-house” developed code named AMOS (Advanced MGT system Operation Simulator). This tool allows to perform a steady-state matching analysis based on the characteristic lines of each component, when using a low calorific gas in a MGT. Producer gas and natural gas mixtures are considered and a parametric study is carried out. Performances were computed considering MGT full-load operation.

Abstract:
The paper explores the possibilities of restructuring the activities of rural tourism in Serbia, during the COVID pandemic. Having in mind the shock experienced by the tourism sector, as well as the area of rural tourism, digital marketing of agricultural and food products is imposed as one of the solutions. Namely, through online platforms and modern logistics, producers can consolidate business revenues during a pandemic, when rural tourism is almost impossible. The move can be seen as a short-term business restructuring caused by a pandemic. In that way, with the measures of state support, the area of rural tourism in Serbia can be preserved, in order to be ready for the period after the pandemic. Digitization enables small agricultural producers to survive and strengthen their market position in conditions of intensified global competition. This is achieved through digital cooperation, which can play the role of one large agricultural producer, thus achieving the effects of economies of scale, size and breadth.

Abstract:
Due to the specific features of the land factor, under market conditions, there is a tendency towards income deprivation of farms in relation to their surroundings. One way to improve this situation is to create a system of market institutions for farmer-recipient transactions. The issue of the position of the agricultural producer in the food supply chain is widely described in the literature on the subject. Nevertheless, practical analyses showing the real impact of the marketing position on economic results of farm are still rare. Therefore, the aim of this article is to assess the relationship between market integration and agricultural selling prices and, as a consequence, the level of global output and household income. The analysis is based on primary data from surveys of over 700 small-scale family farms in Poland. The choice of small-scale farms was deliberate, as these entities are the most discriminated against in the food supply chain. Explaining this process is key to improving the economic situation of small-scale farming and constitutes a premise for the objectives of agricultural policy and creating business strategy. The results of the research indicate that there is a positive correlation between the level of integration of an agricultural holding and sales prices for selected groups of agricultural products. This, in turn, leads to the improvement of economic condition of farms more closely integrated with the market.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in consumer products has expanded rapidly, revealing both innovative improvements over conventional materials, and the potential for novel risks to human health and the environment. As the number of new nano-enabled products and the volume of toxicity data on ENMs continues to grow, regulatory agencies like the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – a small, independent federal agency responsible for protecting consumers from unreasonable risks associated with product use – will require the ability to screen and group a diverse array of nano-enabled consumer products based on their potential risks to consumers. Such prioritization would allow efficient allocation of limited resources for subsequent testing and evaluation of high-risk products and materials. To enable this grouping and prioritization for further testing, we developed a framework that establishes a prioritization score by evaluating a nano-enabled product's potential hazard and exposure, as well as additional consideration of regulatory importance. We integrate the framework into a pilot version software tool and, using a hypothetical case study, we demonstrate that the tool can effectively rank nano-enabled consumer products and can be adjusted for use by agencies with different priorities. The proposed decision-analytical framework and pilot-version tool presented here could enable a regulatory agency like the CPSC to triage reported safety concerns more effectively and allocate limited resources more efficiently.

Singhvi, Punit, Javier García Mainieri, Hasan Ozer, and Brajendra Sharma. Rheology-Chemical Based Procedure to Evaluate Additives/Modifiers Used in Asphalt Binders for Performance Enhancements: Phase 2. Illinois Center for Transportation, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/21-020.

Full text
Abstract:
The increased use of softer binders in Illinois over the past decade is primarily attributed to the increased use of recycled materials in asphalt pavement construction. The shift in demand of using PG 58-28 over PG 64-22 has resulted in potential alternative methods to produce softer binders more economically using proprietary products. However, there are challenges in using these proprietary products for asphalt modification because of uncertainty in their long-term performance and significant variability in binder chemistry. The current SuperPave performance grading specification for asphalt binders is insufficient in differentiating binders produced from these modifiers. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of various softener-type asphalt binder modifiers using a wide array of rheological and chemistry tests for their integration into the Illinois Department of Transportation’s material specifications. The small-strain rheological tests and their parameters allowed for consistent grouping of modified binders and can be used as surrogates to identify performing and nonperforming asphalt binders. A new parameter, Δ|G*|peak τ, was developed from the linear amplitude sweep test and showed potential to discriminate binders based on their large-strain behavior. Chemistry-based parameters were shown to track aging and formulation changes. The modifier sources were identified using fingerprint testing and were manifested in the modified binder chemical and compositional characteristics. The two sources of base binders blended with the modifiers governed the aging rate of the modified binders. Mixture performance testing using the Illinois Flexibility Index Test and the Hamburg Wheel-Track Test were consistent with the rheological and chemical findings, except for the glycol amine-based modified binder, which showed the worst cracking performance with the lowest flexibility index among the studied modifiers. This was contrary to its superior rheological performance, which may be attributed to lower thermal stability, resulting in high mass loss during mixing. According to the characterization of field-aged binders, laboratory aging of two pressurized aging vessel cycles or more may represent realistic field aging of 10 to 15 years at the pavement surface and is able to distinguish modified binders. Therefore, an extended aging method of two pressurized aging vessel cycles was recommended for modified binders. Two different testing suites were recommended for product approval protocol with preliminary thresholds for acceptable performance validated with field-aged data.
