Abstract:
Creating, enlarging and excavating a harbour can modify the dynamic response of the basin. A verification of the resonance modes is common practice before undertaking the related work. This can be done numerically if the necessary assumptions are justifiable. It can be done on a small-scale model if the basin has an irregular shape or if the depth varies from one area to the other.A computer-programmed analytical method of resonance modes is presented. It is derived from the direct measure principle of successive oscillation superposition used in the laboratory. Validation is obtained by apply

Abstract:
Spatial patterns of litterfall and soil nitrogen (N) mineralization were investigated in an old growth hemlock-hardwood forest to test the hypothesis that the lignin/N ratio of litterfall is negatively correlated with soil N availability. Litterfall was measured at 50 small subplots on a 7.2-ha mapped plot in Sylvania Wilderness Area, Michigan, where there is pronounced patchiness of species in the canopy. Nitrogen mineralization and nitrification were measured concurrently at the subplots using buried-bag incubations. Total aboveground litterfall was 3723 kg·ha-1 per year with leaf litterfall

Abstract:
Investigation of the linear stability problem for rapidly rotating convection on an f-plane has revealed the existence of two distinct scales in the vertical structure of the critical eigenfunctions: a small length scale whose vertical wavenumber kz is comparable with the large horizontal wavenumber k⊥ selected at onset, and a large-scale modulation which forms an envelope on the order of the layer depth d. The small-scale structure in the vertical results from a geostrophic balance imposed by the Taylor–Proudman constraint. This primary balance forces rotational alignment and confines fluid m

Detailed mapping completed by a microtectonic study of the Tizi n'Test Triassic basin, located along the Tizi n'Test fault zone in the Moroccan High Atlas, has allowed us to improve the knowledge on the geometry of the structures and the activity of faults during the Triassic extensional events related to the rifting of the central Atlantic. The latter are reflected by the development of a rift, at present inverted and deformed by the collision of Africa and Europe, comprising kilometric-scale grabens and half-grabens bounded by major faults trending ENE–WSW, with a dip towards the NNW, and a

Climate change poses a threat to the viability of rural households in Niger, where the concern is all the greater as the economy is based on agriculture, which is mainly dependent on rainfall and employs most of the working population. The aim of this study is to compare farmers' perceptions of the effects of climate change with observed data, and to identify the adaptation strategies they are developing to cope with them. Surveys were carried out using focus groups and questionnaires with a sample of eighty-six heads of households in six villages in the commune of Rurale Bittinkodji in the Ko

The Eastern Otway Basin exhibits two near-or-thogonal structural grains, specifically NE-SW and WNW-ESE trending structures dominating the Otway Ranges, Colac Trough and Torquay Embayment. The relative timing of these structures is poorly constrained, but dip analysis data from offshore seismic lines in the Torquay Embayment show that two distinct structural provinces developed during two separate extensional episodes. The Snail Terrace comprises the southern structural province of the Torquay Embayment and is characterised by the WNW-ESE trending basin margin fault and a number of small scale

Abstract The Upper Liassic series in the western border of Iberia (Lusitanian Basin, Portugal), show an important lutitic sedimentation, characterized generally by a monotonous marl/limestone alternation. Small scale siliceous sponge mudmounds occur in these deposits from Middle Toarcian to Lower Aalenian age. The scope of this work is to pinpoint the stratigraphical and sedimentological context and to characterize controlling factors of the spongioliths. Stratigraphic and facies analysis.
