Abstract:
The sewerage situation in large Asian cities is deteriorating. There are only rudimentary septic tanks in most areas which are polluting waterways and threatening public health. Piped sewerage is generally only in areas developed by former European colonial administrations or in wealthy cities like Singapore and Tokyo. There appears to be little prospect for installing traditional Western centralised sewerage as the cost is too great and it would be highly disruptive to the dense cities of Asia. It is not, therefore, a social and political priority despite the interest of major international f

Small-scale forest-based enterprises (SSFBEs) are enterprises that utilize any material or product that is derived from forests, woodlands, or trees outside of forests and woodlands for income generation. Little attention has been paid to the importance of these enterprises in supporting rural livelihood in developing countries. Smallscale fishers provide their immediate communities with a vital source of protein. The sector enables an income source through full-time or part-time work to vulnerable coastal communities. This research focuses on the evaluation of Community Renewable Energy Projects in the aspect of its role for energy transition. There are many reasons to believe, that the current energy system needs to be changed. So far our energy consumption was based on fossil fuels, with a number of adverse consequences. Therefore it is expected that a new energy system will replace the traditional one. The process of development from the old towards the new system is so called the energy transition. To achieve a successful development renewable energy based system, alternatives need to be found.

Abstract:
<p>Zambia is a highly urbanized country with 60% of its urban population residing in low cost areas also called peri-urban, slum or informal settlements. The increase in urban population attributed to rapid migration and urbanization due to political and economic changes has taken a toll on service provision as the infrastructure development and service provision has failed to meet the demand. For the 33 peri-urban areas in Lusaka, the water supply and sanitation has been poor, inadequate and unreliable with the coverage being slightly above 50% for water while 90% of the urban population does

Abstract:
The search for development that is sustainable often results in the complex challenge of having to reconcile the need for socio-economic activities with protection of the environment. This challenge of integrating such fundamentally important considerations that often contrast, but should be mutually supportive, is necessarily addressed by legal and policy frameworks of the country in question. These could be laws and policies with competence to manage the environment, or to manage socio-economic and political activities that impact the environment. This challenge is profound for developing co

Abstract:
The challenges facing small scale irrigation development in South Africa are varied and complex. This complexity is exacerbated by the many years of systematic neglect, in tandem with material and intellectual impoverishment of the majority of participants in this agricultural sector. Attempting to juggle sustainable development of small scale agriculture and environmental and socio-economic advancement is difficult, but there is sufficient evidence in the literature to suggest that small scale agriculture is increasing not only in South Africa but in Sub-Saharan Africa (Collier and Field, 199

Abstract:
This thesis investigates small-scale community-based shrimp aquaculture (CBSA) in northwestern Sri Lanka. The objectives are to explore: (1) community-based shrimp aquaculture; (2) commons institutions and application of commons rules; and (3) policy implications (i.e., as an alternative to large-scale operations in ensuring sustainability). Data were gathered from three communities in northwestern Sri Lanka, through participant observations; semi-structured interviews; focus group discussions; and key informant interviews. Presence of small-scale community-based institutions is evident. Argua
