Mobile communication technology offers a potential platform for new types of communication applications. The findings of the user study reveal general user experiences with the application and show different patterns of usage depending on the social setting of the group and how the preferred features vary accordin

AbstractStatistics of spin orientations in binary galaxies may be used as a tool to study the formation process of galaxies. Helou (1984) found that the spins of spiral galaxies in binary systems are anticorrelated, and he suggested that it may have to do with the inclination dependence of the galaxy merger process. We study this dependence in small groups of galaxies. An N-body code is developed which uses an inclination dependent dynamical friction law to affect mergers of galaxies. It is found that some correlation results in this way in groups, which have initially random spin orientations

Individuals derive many benefits from being social, one of which is improved accuracy of decision-making, the so-called ‘wisdom of the crowds’ effect. This advantage arises because larger groups can pool information from more individuals. At present, limited empirical data indicate that larger groups outperform smaller ones during consensus decision-making in human and non-human animals. Inaccurate decisions can lead to significant costs, and we might therefore expect individuals in small groups to employ mechanisms to compensate for the lack of numbers. Small groups may be able to maintain de

ABSTRACT Introduction It is known that strength training brings improvements in health and sports performance by causing muscle hypertrophy and increased strength, as well as modifying some hemodynamic and physiological factors. Several strength training methodologies have been developed, one of which is vascular occlusion. There are few studies with large muscle groups due to poor adherence to the training style and the fact that vascular occlusion of large muscle groups is more difficult. Objective To verify and compare the hemodynamic effects of exercise with and without vascular occlusion

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate intra-articular dextrose prolotherapy for osteoarthritis of the elbow or stifle in dogs in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective pilot study. Seventeen dogs were evaluated with 10 meeting inclusion criteria for this study. Evaluations included orthopedic exam, visual lameness scoring, Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI), goniometry, kinetic gait analysis, and radiography. Initial lameness score, age, body weight, duration of lameness, and CBPI scores did not differ between groups. Change in CBPI pain severity score in th

Objectives The aim of this study was to establish the optimum dosage and timing of administration of atipamezole in cats undergoing general anaesthesia incorporating ketamine to provide the shortest recovery possible without unacceptably compromising recovery quality. Methods In total, 128 healthy male cats (age range 2–108 months, weight range 0.56–5.22 kg) admitted for castration were randomly allocated to groups of 32. Anaesthesia was induced with 60 mg/m2 ketamine, 180 µg/m2 buprenorphine, 3 mg/m2 midazolam and 600 µg/m2 medetomidine intramuscularly (IM). Cats received 600 µg/m2 (groups 1A

Objectives Thrombolytic therapy is a treatment of choice for people with acute ischemic events, but is uncommonly administered for feline aortic thromboembolism (FATE). This study reports selected clinical data and outcomes of acute FATE treated with tissue plasminogen activator (TPA). A reference group treated with current standard of care (SOC) was analyzed for comparison. Methods This was a retrospective study of FATE in two academic hospitals. TPA-treated cats with two or more limbs (n = 16) affected were compared with a SOC-treated group with two or more limbs affected (n = 38). A limb sc
