Small reservoirs catch and store water for long periods and they decrease streamflow and increase ground-water recharge. A field monitoring program provided the measured water depth for four years in several reservoirs in the Republican River Basin where there are concerns about their aggregate effects in the basin. The daily water budget operation for one reservoir was developed. Daily seepage rates were estimated by using precipitation, inflow and evaporation which was assumed equal to grass reference evapotranspiration (ET0), that average 120 to 150 cm/yr, along with the measured stage-storage and stage-surface area relationships. Two computer simulation modules, written in FORTRAN 95, were developed to estimate 1) overflow and gross seepage and 2) potential for ground-water recharge underneath the reservoir. Required daily input data are precipitation, ET0, and inflow from the watershed area. Required reservoir site characteristics include stage-storage and stage-surface area relationships, a standard seepage rate (S0) at 14 different levels in the reservoir, soil-water and plant-growth characteristics and a monthly crop-residue factor. The gross seepage module calculates water depth that determines daily overflow, the water-surface area for evaporation and the head of water on the 14 levels to cause seepage losses. If a level is not inundated, seepage is zero. If a level is inundated less than 0.3-m, S0 is used. When the water head (hL) on a level exceeds 0.3 m, the seepage rate (SL) is increased by, SL = S0 * (hL/0.3)0.25. This relationship was chosen after testing several exponent values between 0 and 1. The modules were calibrated on one reservoir and verified on two others in northwestern Kansas. Results showed runoff from the watersheds averaged about 1.2 to 1.6 cm/yr from the average annual precipitation of 46 to 62 cm. The three reservoirs reduced streamflow at the reservoir site by 74 to 97%, but 90 to 95% of the retained runoff was calculated to contribute to ground-water recharge. Several sensitivity analyses for model inputs were done. Results showed that, the ratio of the average annual inflow volume from the watershed area to the reservoir storage volume was the most sensitive input variable tested.

Abstract:
Small reservoirs have become increasingly widespread across semi-arid regions, due to their ability to reduce transport of eroded soil and harvest scarce and unreliable rainfall for local users. The scale and geographical dispersion of these multiple hydro-social systems restrict their investigation, leading to difficulties in assessing their agricultural potential, their cumulative influence on runoff, and in identifying strategies to support riparian farmers. This research sought to develop a multi-scalar interdisciplinary approach to assess water availability across multiple small reservoirs and understand hydrological and wider drivers’ influence on associated agricultural practices. An Ensemble Kalman Filter approach was developed to combine 30 m Landsat flooded surface area observations with a daily hydrological (GR4J + water balance) model on 7 gauged reservoirs. Data assimilation, providing near-real time corrections, reduced runoff uncertainties generated by highly variable and localised rainfall intensities and lowered daily volume root mean square errors (RMSE) by 50% compared to the initial rainfall-runoff model forecast. Compensating for Landsat’s reduced temporal resolution and correcting outliers, the method correctly reproduced flood dynamics of 5 ha lakes (R²=0.9). Validated against extensive field data over 1999-2014, the method notably establishes Landsat imagery’s ability to assess annual water availability on ungauged reservoirs as small as 1 ha (RMSE circa 25%). Applied to 48 small reservoirs and 546 Landsat 5-8 images, the treatment chain identified the significant water scarcity and unreliability that impedes agricultural development on 80% of lakes in the Merguellil upper catchment (Central Tunisia). In parallel, rapid surveys, quantitative questionnaires and semi-directed interviews confirmed minimal withdrawals, yet highlighted the diversification of practices and the peripheral benefits accompanying small reservoir development. Many farmers lack the capabilities to increase their withdrawals and suffer physical and economic water access difficulties, mismanagement, compounded through limited and short-term government assistance. Individual successes resulted from farmers’ economic resilience and means to secure alternate water supplies during dry spells. Faced with limited storage capacities and prolonged droughts, small reservoirs must in this climatic context retain their supplementary irrigation focus and not strive to support widespread intensification of irrigated practices.

The assigned territory is situated in the City of Brno, in the city district of Židenice. From the west it is limited by the railway track Brno-Židenice, from the east by Koperníkova Street, from the north by Lazaretní Street and finally from the south by Bubeníčkova Street. Its area is approximately 45, 480 m2 which is 4,55 ha. From the urban perspective it is an intensive development in a separated block of the city with a protection zone. Total area is permeated by a few lines for pedestrians. The pedestrian zone provides better permeability of the area and better accessibility of the trade parterre. The buildings connect to surrounding development and respect the density of the integrity of the area. Intensive housing structure is regarded as "the city of short distance". The achievement of high density of housing development combines lots of various functions and relatively small built-up surface. While high-quality environment is preserved, people can find job oportunities in the intensive housing development without the need for transport. For achievement conception of compact city applies space urban planning. The shape of the estate directly impacted the principle of the proposal together with the city planning context of the current buildings. In the protective zone there is established a huge park with water reservoirs. The walk-through trade parterre is filled with many various functions, on its walkable roof is created a semi-public zone with skylights and freely introduced verdure. On the walkable roof there are independent blocks of apartments and public facilities. In the northern and southern corner are located public-service utilities and in the middle of this area there is a nursery and a kindergarden. In structural terms the building it is about cast-in-place concrete reinforced frame based on a white concrete foundation which has one underground level and five above-ground levels.

This diploma thesis focuses on the possibilities of restoration of a small water stream and the construction of a small water reservoir. The small water streams and small water reservoirs are not only the landscape-forming element in the countryside but also, they are used mainly as rectification of water regime in the countryside. In the past there were used inappropriate ways how to modify watercourses or land, there came about ignoring water reservoirs and even water reservoirs were disturbed. Because of that, it came about the harming of ecosystems, small retention of water in the countryside and about the disruption of the natural functions of water streams.

Different types of man-made retention systems (polder, small water reservoir, large water reservoir) have been characterized by means of their retention potential and cost of retention per one cubic meter. As part of these man-made retention systems, wetland area has been created. Its acreage and build expense has been counted up inreference to total area, which differed within various types of retention systems. The results of these calculations, Hessenian method, and the metohod of agricultural land use were used to evaluate natural river basin and its retention potential. The calculations reveal, that model locality of natural river basin has the lowest value, when used for agriculture cultivation. Hessenian method showed the highest value. The expense of substituting the natural retention of the model locality with different man-made retention systems is estimated to be 0.5?1.6 billion CZK.

The remote sensing techniques have been widely applied to environmental issues, such as water quality monitoring. The water quality in Kinmen, Taiwan has been worsening for a long time because of the exuberant alga growth. According to the observed Carlson index, the trophic classes of the reservoirs mostly are eutrophic or hypereutrophic. The bad water quality also hampers the water purification. In order to increase the amount of potable water, a project of water receiving from China is processing and will be finished in a few years. The four small reservoirs, including Tian-Pu, Jin-sha, Rung-Hu, and Shi-Hu reservoirs, are selected as the study sites, which cover a mere several hundred-thousand m2. A multispectral sensor carried on an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) coupled with sampling in situ is employed to estimate the water quality parameters, including chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), secchi disk depth (SDD), and turbidity. In this research, an enumeration-based algorithm, called matching pixel by pixel (MPP), is presented to establish robust empirical model between band ratio and water quality parameter. The experimental results indicate that, while MPP can reduce the influence of specular reflection on regression model establishment, specular reflection does hamper the correction of thematic map production. Due to water fluidity, sampling in situ should be followed by UAV imaging as soon as possible. Excluding turbidity, the obtained estimation accuracy can satisfy the national standard.

This thesis deals with the evaluation of influence of small water reservoirs on the extreme runoff events (floods and drought) in the upper Úpa River basin. It summarizes knowledge about both hydrological extremes and their manifestations in the basin of interest as well as about small water reservoirs in the sense of water retention measures and their possible importance during the periods of low flows or floods. In this thesis two localities of possible reservoirs at place of former splash dams in Obří důl and on the Lysečinský Brook were chosen. To assess the influence of small water reservoirs on runoff during two chosen flood events and two periods of drought, the hydrological model HEC-HMS was applied. The results of model simulation proved a positive influence of reservoirs on the reduction of flood peaks (except for a concurrence of transformed flood waves in the outlet that occurred during one flood event), but the effect was decreasing with the increasing catchment area and the intensity of precipitation and with smaller storage capacity of a reservoir. During the low flows, a positive influence of reservoirs was observed as well, relating to the release of stored water. However, the ability of a reservoir to reduce deficit volume and to balance the flow was decreasing with smaller...

The main objective of this thesis is to prove the influence of small water reservoirs on the extreme runoff situations in a watershed of upper Otava River. The system of small water reservoirs represents an effective part of flood protection, which can be realized without greater changes of landscape. The research part of this thesis includes a summary of knowledge about rainfall-runoff process, small water reservoirs and hydrological modeling. The work is applied to model watershed of Roklanský creek, which is situated in a central part of Šumava Mountains. There are a few rain gauges and laser sensors situated in this watershed, whose are needed for the modeling process. The thesis contains a selection of appropriate data and methods for a creation of digital model of terrain. This digital model of terrain is used for creation of most of the parameters, whose are used for modeling of rainfall- runoff process. This modeling is done in hydrological modeling program HEC - HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center - Hydrologic Modeling System). HEC - HMS is one of the most used simulation programs. The main part of the thesis is a simulation of rainfall-runoff process, applied to two real rainfall-runoff episodes.
