Abstract:
This commentary details the methods and ideas involved in creating the seven portfolio works. The portfolio is comprised of stereo acousmatic works, one mixed work and a multi-channel work, forming the practice-based research completed during the PhD programme at the University of Manchester. The works explore a number of aesthetic concepts encompassing instrumental timbres, cultural sound objects, rhythm incorporation, habitual spaces (the kitchen), imaginary and real objects (jukebox), and visual art sculpture (origami). Uniting the portfolio works is the use of Denis Smalley’s spectromorphology (1997). In its intended function, this tool provides the listener of electroacoustic music with thorough and accessible sets of vocabulary to describe sound events, structures and spaces. The use of this descriptive tool need not stop here. Fortunately, and often unconsciously for the composer, it does not, since all composers create music that is spectromorphological with or without an awareness of its presence at work. In a reversal of conventional practice, my research approaches spectromorphology from an alternate angle, viewing the vocabulary as the informer upon sound material choice and creation. In this reversal, vocabulary no longer functions descriptively; instead the vocabulary precedes the composition, directing my compositional pathway in each piece. This new application, used as a method for selecting and creating sound in the creation of each portfolio work, is an attempt at systemisation and an effort to partly remedy the seemingly endless choice of possibilities we are faced with when beginning a new work.

Alcorn, Pamela Mary. "Perspectives of electroacoustic music : a critical study of the electroacoustic music of Jonathan Harvey, Denis Smalley and Trevor Wishart." Thesis, Durham University, 1992. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/1201/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of the electroacoustic music of three composers living and working in Great Britain - Jonathan Harvey, Denis Smalley and Trevor Wishart - in the broader context of issues raised by the application of technology to music. The thesis has two main aims: to celebrate the diversity of musical languages to which the electroacoustic medium lends itself, as illustrated by the works of these three composers; and to discover and establish themes which suggest the existence of a common compositional aesthetic underlying these developments. To this end, the writings of each composer are discussed and compared in addition to their compositions. The particular question of the influence of technology on musical material and musical language, as illustrated through the works of Smalley, Harvey and Wishart, is examined, and related issues such as the effect of the mechanisms involved in the human perception of sound on the understanding of musical structure are discussed. Specific musical examples for chapter three (Denis Smalley) are presented on DAT tape, and listed in Appendix 1. An additional cassette is included, illustrating the analysis-by-tape method described in chapter three, preliminary sketches and melodic material for Jonathan Harvey's 'Ritual Melodies' (chapter four), and MIDI sketches for Wishart's orchestral dances (Conclusion); these are also listed in Appendix 1. All source material is listed in Appendix 6.

Potts, Joanne M. "Estimating abundance of rare, small mammals : a case study of the Key Largo woodrat (Neotoma floridana smalli)." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2068.

Full text
Abstract:
Estimates of animal abundance or density are fundamental quantities in ecology and conservation, but for many species such as rare, small mammals, obtaining robust estimates is problematic. In this thesis, I combine elements of two standard abundance estimation methods, capture-recapture and distance sampling, to develop a method called trapping point transects (TPT). In TPT, a "detection function", g(r) (i.e. the probability of capturing an animal, given it is r m from a trap when the trap is set) is estimated using a subset of animals whose locations are known prior to traps being set. Generalised linear models are used to estimate the detection function, and the model can be extended to include random effects to allow for heterogeneity in capture probabilities. Standard point transect methods are modified to estimate abundance. Two abundance estimators are available. The first estimator is based on the reciprocal of the expected probability of detecting an animal, ^P, where the expectation is over r; whereas the second estimator is the expectation of the reciprocal of ^P. Performance of the TPT method under various sampling efforts and underlying true detection probabilities of individuals in the population was investigated in a simulation study. When underlying probability of detection was high (g(0) = 0:88) and between-individual variation was small, survey effort could be surprisingly low (c. 510 trap nights) to yield low bias (c. 4%) in the two estimators; but under certain situations, the second estimator can be extremely biased. Uncertainty and relative bias in population estimates increased with decreasing detectability and increasing between-individual variation. Abundance of the Key Largo woodrat (Neotoma floridana smalli), an endangered rodent with a restricted geographic range, was estimated using TPT. The TPT method compared well to other viable methods (capture-recapture and spatially-explicit capture-recapture), in terms of both field practicality and cost. The TPT method may generally be useful in estimating animal abundance in trapping studies and variants of the TPT method are presented.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates project risk management issues in smaller software teams. Certain gaps in the literature are identified. There is limited literature on what risk management techniques software practitioners use. The studies that are published tend to focus on large software teams. This thesis investigates what risks these smaller teams consider to be important. It also investigates what techniques are perceived to address these risks and how effective those techniques are considered to be. One of those risks is found to be of primary importance, yet this risk is not suggested by the project management literature. This thesis goes on to conduct a more in-depth exploration of that specific risk in the context of these smaller teams Interviews were selected as the most appropriate method to achieve the objectives of the thesis. Nineteen interviews in eight software organisations are conducted to collect data for this thesis. Three different perspectives on project risk were investigated. Those were the perspectives of the; service managers, project managers and developers. Hence a large store of rich information is collated. The results are analysed and a rich set of information is presented in this thesis. As a result of this research it is suggested that smaller software teams may find it useful to consider the 16 risks discussed in this research and how applicable those risks are to their individual organisation. Service managers may need to do more to raise the awareness of the importance of risks associated with ‘customer relationship issues’ within their own organisations. Three risks stood out as areas where future research might be most fruitful. They were; customer relationship issues, introduction of new technology and unrealistic schedules and budgets. Risks related to customer relationship issues were of particular significance and have tended to be over looked in the project management literature. It is submitted that research into standard project risk management approaches may need to be combined with business risk management approaches to gain a full understanding of the risks faced and addressed by these smaller teams.

Candy, Ryan David. "Resources, Strategy and Performancein the Smaller Firm." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Management, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/3522.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between firm resources, positioning strategies and performance in the smaller firm. Porter’s generic strategies have been useful in describing how firms compete in the marketplace, and the resource based view has shown that resources can lead to a sustained competitive advantage. The strategic management field has begun to combine the two theories and examine the link between them. Small firms must make the best use of their relatively scarce resources. It is proposed that the relationship between resources and performance is contingent upon the positioning strategy the firm competes on, although there has only been limited supporting research to date. This research builds on work by Edelman et al. (2005) by examining the relationship between human, organisational and physical resources, and the strategies of quality/ customer service, innovation, and cost leadership in 447 retail, engineering, and professional service firms in New Zealand. Using Structural Equations Modelling this research finds that positioning strategies are the mechanism by which firms can leverage their resources into higher performance. This relationship can be modelled as mediated or moderated, with statistical analysis sensitive to model complexity. The firm’s environment influences this relationship with different resources required to support each position depending on the industry. Specifically human, organisational, and physical resources appear to be viable sources of competitive advantage when they are leveraged by a strategy of quality/ customer service, innovation or cost leadership when the industry environment is conducive to the resource – strategy combination.

Network switches are a critical component in any networked FTI data acquisition system in order to allow the forwarding of data from the DAU to the target destination devices such as the network recorder, PCM gateways, or ground station. Larger configurations require one or more switch boxes to handle aggregation, routing, filtering and synchronization via the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol. However, for smaller configurations where space and weight restrictions are more stringent, a separate switch box may not be practical This paper discusses how all the essential features of an FTI network, such as flexible forwarding and filtering and IEEE 1588 synchronization, can be maintained without the need for the separate switch box thus making significant savings on weight and size and reducing cost.

Abstract:
Background: Small businesses are considered as a valuable source for the society and the economic growth and bank loan is the main source of finance for them. Small businesses are commonly seen as riskier than larger businesses it is thus noteworthy to examine banks’ credit assessment for small businesses. The implementation of the Basel III Accord will start in 2013 with the aim to generate further protection of financial stability and promote sustainable economic growth, and the main idea underlying Basel III is to increase the capital basis of banks. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe how larger and smaller banks in Sweden are managing credit assessment of small businesses, and if this process differs according to the size of the bank. The authors further want to investigate how expectations of new capital regulations, in form of Basel III, affect the credit assessment and if it is affecting the ability of small businesses to receive loans. Method: In order to meet the purpose of the thesis a mixed model approach is used. The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with representatives from three smaller and three larger banks. Additional, statistics were computed in order to examine the economic state of the Swedish market, where also an archival research with 10 allocated banks operating with corporate services was executed. Conclusions: The banks have a well-developed credit process where building a mutual trust relationship with the customer is crucial. If the lender has a good relationship with the customer, it will ease the collection of credible information and thus enhance the process of making right decision. The research examined minor differences between smaller and larger banks in their credit assessment. Currently, the banks do not see any problems with adjusting to the new regulation and thus do not see specific effects for small businesses and their ability to receive loans. The effects that can be identified by the expectations of Basel III are the banks’ concern of charging the right price for the right risk and the demand of holding more capital when lending to businesses. The banks have come a long way on the adjustment to Basel III, which has pros and cons, thus it implies that banks are already charging customers for the effect of the regulations that will not be 100 percent implemented until 2019. The difference that was identified between larger and smaller banks is that larger banks seem to have more established strategies when working on the implementation of Basel III.

Murray, Joseph Francis. "The environmental performance of NHS Scotland smaller buildings." Thesis, Glasgow Caledonian University, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.486490.

Full text
Abstract:
The environmental performance of National Health Service Scotland's (NHSScotiand) smaller healthcare buildings were investigated with a view to identifYing ways .of reducing the environmental impacts ofenergy, waste, water and transport. Energy emerged as one ofthe prominent issues. This was based on data taken from an energy audit of 180 buildings randomly selected from all NHSScotiand health boards. A wide variance in energy consumption throughout the sample was discovered, which could not be explained by variations in fabric, structure, elevation and orientation ofthe buildings. It was believed a benchmark or similar suitable energy target could be an appropriate tool to help lower energy use in buildings ofthis class. Therefore, based on Building Research Establishment (BRE) baseline and good practice data for similar buildings, and including an allowance for patients' needs, an energy target was developed. Research into waste and water issues showed that the disposal ofprescription, and over the counter, medicines is highlighted as a problem area in Scotland. The research showed there could be over 300 tonnes of medicines being disposed of in Scotland every year with over 40% of these flushed into sewerage systems where sewage treatment plants have no means of removing them before emitting them into surface water systems. The impacts of these pharmaceuticals alone can have serious adverse affects on non-target species but there is little known about the effects cocktail mixtures ofthese chemicals may have on the environment. Further research was carried out on the awareness ofmanagement and staffofenvironmental issues and their behaviour towards such issues while at their place of work. Results from a randomly selected group of71 health centres and clinics showed that many healthcare workers who responded believe that climate change is happening with the majority of those blaming human society as the main cause; many also believe the trend can be reversed. A high proportion of respondents believe that power generation contributes to impacts on human health. Given that NHSScotland's negative impacts on the environment are substantial, due mainly to poor environmental performance, investigation was carried out into how best to approach changing the culture within the organisation to help reach environmental targets and become sustainable in the long term.

Abstract:
Tourism is something that today is very common for most parts of the world. Tourism effects is a phenomenon that focuses on the effects of tourism which can affect destinations and residents in different ways. The most common are social, cultural, environmental and economic impacts. The purpose of this bachelor thesis has been to explore if there are any tourism effects and if so, what are they and in what ways can they affect a small rural area as a destination and the effect on the residents. For this purpose we have used an area called Glasriket in Sweden as an example. This study has used both qualitative and quantitative data with a deductive approach. After conducting our research, we then composed a questionnaire. The questionnaire was shared on our personal Facebook pages and also sent out through email to businesses, organizations and municipalities in Glasriket. In total, the empirical data was collected from 74 respondents. The results of the study showed that tourism is often perceived as positive. The positive effects of tourism outweigh the negative. It is clear that tourism has impacts on destinations in rural areas and not only on major cities or coastal areas. One conclusion is that yes, there are effects caused by tourism in Glasriket. There are several environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts in this area. It can also be concluded that tourism affects people and destinations in different ways and the ways the effects are perceived by residents might vary depending on factors such as cultural background, economic status and personal opinions.

Maestri, Eric. "Geste et texture / homme et machine : une étude comparative sur la production et la réception de la musique mixte." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016STRAC047/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of mixed music is characterized by a dualist approach: on the one hand, an analysis that merely focuses on technical meansand, on the other hand, research resorting to perceptive strategies in the analysis of electroacoustic music. In order to overcome thistraditional dualism, this work sketches a perceptive typology of the interaction between instrumental and electronic components, mixedmusic works are considered juxtapositionals, synthetics and transformationals. In doing so, the thesis advances an analytical holisticapproach in order to combine the concepts of perception and prescription in mixed music, where the notions of gesture and texture areparticularly relevant. The definition of a specific objet, i.e. the “mixed sound”, allows for an original interpretation of Denis Smalley’sspectromorphology and its epistemological framework. As a result, the typological perceptive criteria here proposed are based on thefunctional distribution of the attacks, sustains and decays of “mixed sounds” between the instrumental and the electronic parts. Thishypothesis is illustrated through the detailed analysis of five case studies: François-Bernard Mâche’s Sopiana and Aulodie, PhilippeManoury’s Pluton, Marco Stroppa’s Traiettoria and Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Mixtur

Johnsen, Rhona Elizabeth. "Smaller supplier-larger customer relationships : an exploration of asymmetry." Thesis, University of Bath, 2005. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.420872.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent research indicates a growing interest in understanding the nature of asymmetry in relationships between large and small firms. Research to date has suggested that asymmetry is often associated with an imbalance in size of the parties, unequal distribution of power, or with one party investing more into and gaining less from a relationship. However, there is a paucity of research on asymmetry in relationships from the smaller firm's perspective and it is as yet unclear what asymmetry in relationships means for smaller firms. In particular, the experiences of smaller suppliers in relationships with larger customers have often been overlooked, and thus there is less known about how smaller suppliers cope and manage in relationships with customers, where they may contribute more but have fewer evident advantages. A typology of asymmetry and symmetry in relationship characteristics and a subsequent conceptual framework are derived from a literature review and exploratory interviews. These provide a structure to explore asymmetry in relationships between smaller suppliers and larger customers, and to examine the influence of suppliers' capabilities on asymmetry in their relationships. The empirical data collection involved six exploratory interviews and eight in-depth case studies of suppliers in the UK textile industry. In total, the interviews for the study amounted to 48. The findings from the study provide early indications that it may be problematic to refer to customer-supplier relationships as purely asymmetrical or symmetrical, as asymmetry and symmetry may be apparent across a wide range of relationship characteristics. Furthermore, the findings suggest that smaller suppliers in relationships with larger customers cannot be assumed to have high levels of asymmetry in their relationships, or possess limited capabilities to effect change in their relationships. The findings revealed some of the potentially destructive outcomes of asymmetry in relationships, but also identified that the bridging capabilities of leading, learning and integrating appear to have a significant influence on the development of more symmetry in relationships for suppliers when asymmetry is problematic. Furthermore, the thesis provides indications that different types of asymmetry may exist, and that these different types may offer possibilities to identify and distinguish between different customer relationship options and opportunities for suppliers.

Abstract:
Smaller powers wield agency in the international system and they do so in many cases independently of institutions. This is problematic not only from the perspective of realism, where 'might is right,' but also from the perspective of liberalism which argues that smaller powers use institutions to obtain policy objectives. This thesis considers this problem in respect of the new states that emerged from the former Soviet Union at the end of 1991, with particular focus on Belarus which is a least-likely case for smaller power agency given its alliance with Russia and few institutional memberships. Through a detailed case study of Belarus's foreign policy, I first argue that smaller power agency has been articulated in a regional context when the smaller power withdraws its consent to the regional order. While Belarus has generally consented to Russia's regional primacy or hegemony since 1991, this consent is not unconditional, and the violation of regional interstate norms by Russia caused Belarus to make efforts to renegotiate the rules underpinning the regional order. My second, related argument is that differentiation from the regional power, Russia, proved crucial for the formulation of independent policy positions by the smaller power's officials, and, in turn, that differentiation of opinions among the smaller power's elite granted flexibility to monitor and adapt its actions (that is, allowed the smaller power to wield agency). It did so without outright provoking the regional power to intervene in the smaller power, and instead kept the regional power engaged. The findings receive tentative support from auxiliary study of other post-Soviet smaller powers, and recapitulate the merits of the neoclassical realist research agenda.

Abstract:
With the help of new technology it has become much easier to apply for a job. Reaching out to a larger audience also results in a lot of more applications to consider when hiring for a new position. This has resulted in that many big companies uses statistical learning methods as a tool in the first step of the recruiting process. Smaller companies that do not have access to the same amount of historical and big data sets do not have the same opportunities to digitalise their recruitment process. Using topological data analysis, this thesis explore how clustering methods can be used on smaller data sets in the early stages of the recruitment process. It also studies how the level of abstraction in data representation affects the results. The methods seem to perform well on higher level job announcements but struggles on basic level positions. It also shows that the representation of candidates and jobs has a huge impact on the results.

Gill, Mark Richard. "Filtering down : open data in smaller scaled Canadian municipalities." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/57590.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a case study examination of open data initiatives in smaller scaled municipalities in Canada. My research questions explore how open data initiatives are being developed and deployed as well as how notions of scale affect these initiatives. I used three avenues of investigation: first, I performed an assessment of district and municipal open data websites in British Columbia; second, I interviewed government open data experts in Western Canada; and finally, I reviewed open data policies from participant governments. From this research, I found that there is a high level of variability in the benefits and challenges associated with offering open data at the municipal and district level. These challenges include: technological barriers to publishing and using data; the current culture around data management; a lack of understanding about who is using open data from a government perspective; and, the need for standardized procedures relating to open data. For governments, challenges associated with open data can create barriers to realizing the potential benefits of open data. In looking at the effect of scale on the development and deployment of open data, two scale effects emerge: the limitation of size and data jurisdiction. In the first, smaller scaled municipalities focus on the size of a municipality as a determining factor for the success of open data. In the second, data jurisdiction produces borders and boundaries for open data users in a way that reifies a traditional data management model. I conclude with recommendations to reduce barriers associated with open data initiatives, and present some theoretical considerations of scale in open data initiatives as groundwork for future research.

Business Administration/Human Resource Management
Ph.D.
In this manuscript I examine outcomes associated with social networks in organizations. Specifically, I consider how two characteristics of social networks (i.e., centrality, tie strength) can affect the performance and satisfaction of employees at work. Then, I explore the role that perceptions of fit (i.e., person-group fit, person-organization) may play in mediating the relationship between social network characteristics and (a) employee performance and (b) job satisfaction. Moreover, I investigate boundary conditions of the aforementioned mediated relationships (i.e., social network characteristics - fit perceptions - employee performance; social network characteristics - fit perceptions - job satisfaction). First, I consider how individual differences (i.e., racioethnicity, sex) generate employee dissimilarity that likely moderates the relationship between structural network characteristics and perceived fit in the mediated relationships proposed. Second, I examine an organizational variable (i.e., perceived diversity climate) as a first and second stage moderator of the aforementioned mediated relationships. Overall, it is necessary to investigate the relationships proposed in the model, because studying social networks helps us to understand why employees interact with certain individuals (or not with others) and how organizational outcomes are affected by employees' choices regarding their social networks.

Abstract:
We consider a general class of finite dimensional deterministic dynamical systems with finitely many local attractors each of which supports a unique ergodic probability measure, which includes in particular the class of Morse–Smale systems in any finite dimension. The dynamical system is perturbed by a multiplicative non-Gaussian heavytailed Lévy type noise of small intensity ε > 0. Specifically we consider perturbations leading to a Itô, Stratonovich and canonical (Marcus) stochastic differential equation. The respective asymptotic first exit time and location problem from each of the domains of attractions in case of inward pointing vector fields in the limit of ε-> 0 has been investigated by the authors. We extend these results to domains with characteristic boundaries and show that the perturbed system exhibits a metastable behavior in the sense that there exits a unique ε-dependent time scale on which the random system converges to a continuous time Markov chain switching between the invariant measures. As examples we consider α-stable perturbations of the Duffing equation and a chemical system exhibiting a birhythmic behavior.

Abstract:
Bumble bees workers (Bombus sp.) exhibit a large variation in worker body size, with up to a ten fold weight difference between full genetic sisters. Stranger still is that there appears to be little adaptive benefit for producing them as smaller workers are worse at performing colony tasks. However smaller workers can survive starvation for longer than their larger sisters. We test the hypothesis that smaller workers are either adaptations to poor resource environments or highly variable resource environments. By raising colonies in the lab of different resource regimes we find that colonies in poor resource treatments show decreased average body size, but there appears to be no tradeoff in producing either larger or more workers.

Li, Zhe. "Optimizing neural network structures: faster speed, smaller size, less tuning." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6460.

Abstract:
Deep neural networks have achieved tremendous success in many domains (e.g., computer vision~\cite{Alexnet12,vggnet15,fastrcnn15}, speech recognition~\cite{hinton2012deep,dahl2012context}, natural language processing~\cite{dahl2012context,collobert2011natural}, games~\cite{silver2017mastering,silver2016mastering}), however, there are still many challenges in deep learning comunity such as how to speed up training large deep neural networks, how to compress large nerual networks for mobile/embed device without performance loss, how to automatically design the optimal network structures for a certain task, and how to further design the optimal networks with improved performance and certain model size with reduced computation cost. To speed up training large neural networks, we propose to use multinomial sampling for dropout, i.e., sampling features or neurons according to a multinomial distribution with different probabilities for different features/neurons. To exhibit the optimal dropout probabilities, we analyze the shallow learning with multinomial dropout and establish the risk bound for stochastic optimization. By minimizing a sampling dependent factor in the risk bound, we obtain a distribution-dependent dropout with sampling probabilities dependent on the second order statistics of the data distribution. To tackle the issue of evolving distribution of neurons in deep learning, we propose an efficient adaptive dropout (named evolutional dropout) that computes the sampling probabilities on-the-fly from a mini-batch of examples. To compress large neural network structures, we propose a simple yet powerful method for compressing the size of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) based on parameter binarization. The striking difference from most previous work on parameter binarization/quantization lies at different treatments of $1\times 1$ convolutions and $k\times k$ convolutions ($k>1$), where we only binarize $k\times k$ convolutions into binary patterns. By doing this, we show that previous deep CNNs such as GoogLeNet and Inception-type Nets can be compressed dramatically with marginal drop in performance. Second, in light of the different functionalities of $1\times 1$ (data projection/transformation) and $k\times k$ convolutions (pattern extraction), we propose a new block structure codenamed the pattern residual block that adds transformed feature maps generated by $1\times 1$ convolutions to the pattern feature maps generated by $k\times k$ convolutions, based on which we design a small network with $\sim 1$ million parameters. Combining with our parameter binarization, we achieve better performance on ImageNet than using similar sized networks including recently released Google MobileNets. To automatically design neural networks, we study how to design a genetic programming approach for optimizing the structure of a CNN for a given task under limited computational resources yet without imposing strong restrictions on the search space. To reduce the computational costs, we propose two general strategies that are observed to be helpful: (i) aggressively selecting strongest individuals for survival and reproduction, and killing weaker individuals at a very early age; (ii) increasing mutation frequency to encourage diversity and faster evolution. The combined strategy with additional optimization techniques allows us to explore a large search space but with affordable computational costs. To further design the optimal networks with improved performance and certain model size under reduced computation cost, we propose an ecologically inspired genetic approach for neural network structure search , that includes two types of succession: primary and secondary succession as well as accelerated extinction. Specifically, we first use primary succession to rapidly evolve a community of poor initialized neural network structures into a more diverse community, followed by a secondary succession stage for fine-grained searching based on the networks from the primary succession. Accelerated extinction is applied in both stages to reduce computational cost. In addition, we also introduce the gene duplication to further utilize the novel block of layers that appeared in the discovered network structure.

Finnie, Carol Jean. "The components of a quality assurance program for smaller hospitals." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24662.

Full text
Abstract:
The components of a quality assurance program for smaller hospitals in British Columbia have been defined. These components have been defined by a comparison of the normative standards as determined in the literature and by a survey of administrators. Sixteen administrators of predominantly acute-care, accredited, 20-50-bed hospitals in B.C. were surveyed. Twelve of these administrators were surveyed twice. A new requirement for accreditation was introduced by the Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation (C.C.H.A.) called the Quality Assurance Standard (1985). This Standard required that quality assurance (QA) programs be established in every department or service in the hospital. The Standard does not give a clear description of the QA functions for each individual department in a smaller hospital. An important and relevant list of specific functions for a QA program were identified at various C.C.H.A. seminars held across Canada in late 1983 and early 1984. The literature review indicated that there were a number of controversial issues affecting the implementation of the QA Standard. In spite of many methodological problems associated with quality measurement and assurance, most hospitals will adopt a quality assurance model. The first survey asked the administrators to define the purpose, goals and objectives of a QA program. They were also asked to determine the QA functions for four areas: hospital board, dietary, nursing and pharmacy. Administrators were asked to identify who in the hospital is primarily responsible for the overall QA program and for the QA program in four areas; the problems and benefits encountered when trying to implement a QA program; and their opinion of the new QA requirements for accreditation. The second survey asked the administrators to assign a priority to those functions identified in Round I. The empirical findings were then compared with the normative standards. With some exceptions, the empirical data were consistent with the normative standards. The empirical findings shows that there are problems related to implementing a QA program but at the same time there are a number of benefits related to the program. The priority ratings of the functions indicated areas of high or low importance to the administrator. It is likely that these priority ratings are useful for planning when alternatives must be considered during this time of fiscal restraint. Government policies along with the strong voluntary support of accreditation programs make it vitally important that suitable models for implementing QA are developed. The Doll model is suggested as a basis for implementing QA. Further areas for research are presented.

Seifert, Rene Eugenio. "Meaningful internationalization : a study among the leaders of Brazilian smaller enterprises." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1168/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers how leaders of smaller firms attach meanings to internationalization. This is examined by the means of a survey questionnaire of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises [SME] operating in the clothing industry of Parana State in Brazil, and 58 qualitative interviews with the leaders of these firms. The thesis argues that existing theories of internationalization overlook the question of what international involvement means to relevant actors and in so doing have produced a body of knowledge characterized by deterministic, rationalist and individualist assumptions of organizational action that seriously understate the role of choice, interpretation and the collective dynamics of meaningful action. Drawing on Weber’s (1964; 1978) argument that social action is meaningful the thesis advances an integrative view of internationalization as a meaningful action characterized by the interplay of choice, rationality and interpretation. The thesis presents evidence sufficient to show that meanings regarding the criteria and parameters informing rational choice in internationalization vary with decision makers’ interpretations. In addition, it demonstrates that such meanings do not always accord with available theories. The thesis discusses why a recognition that internationalization is meaningful, and therefore implies choice and interpretation in addition to rationality, is critical for further theorizing. Finally, it considers the contributions of the findings and arguments for policymaking and managerial practice in smaller businesses.

Pretorius, Carlien. "Smaller but not the same : performance management in high-growth SMEs." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/76034.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this article is to explore performance management (PM) practices in high growth, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the strategies used to maximise the output of rare resources. In addition, this article explores challenges in managing performance during periods of high growth. Design / Methodology / Approach – This article is an exploratory study of employee performance management within high-growth SMEs. The analysis of twelve in-depth interviews with high-growth SME individuals provides deeper insight into how formal and informal processes are used to manage high performance. Findings – High-growth SMEs rely on informal management practices to build a high performance culture. These practices include building relationships, honest and frequent communication, addressing the diverse needs of their employees, empowering individuals to recognise their value within the firm and utilising peer accountability. Various challenges were identified including perceived unfairness due to inconsistent informal processes, risks management resulting from informal control practices, managing low performers due to limited formal records and neglection of addressing poor performance due to close relationships without honest conversation. Practical implications – This research highlights the need for start-up and small SMEs to manage employee performances for sustained growth to larger SME’s. This groundwork provides insight to build long-term growth. Originality / Value – This article introduces a framework to describe the informal performance management practices of high-growth SMEs. This framework contributes to the understanding of how informal PM practices align with the strategy of the firm.

Eriksonas, Linas. "National heroes and national identities : a comparative framework for smaller nations." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2002. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU153211.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to grasp the phenomenon of the national hero behind the facade of national identity. Three smaller nations from the northern quarters of Europe - Scotland, Norway and Lithuania - are examined separately and within a comparative framework. Thus, the study is built on three different layers representing differences rather than common features among the three case studies. The key question underlying the thesis is this: what is the relation if any between the heroic traditions and national identity? Since the latter has been widely seen by scholars as an entity caught up in a perpetual cycle of human evolution, whether monitoring or constructing the world we live in, it was deemed appropriate to investigate the most permanent feature of national identity, that is heroic traditions - the prevailing popular trends in situating the national hero in history. The thesis argues that heroic traditions came about in connection with the emergence of the nation state in early modern history. The common ground for selecting the three otherwise different countries for this study was found in the fact that all had been exposed to unionism for a greater part of their national history, hence national heroes were formulated in the language of separatism and longing for statehood. Yet, as the thesis attempts to demonstrate, both the heroic and the modern state had been conceived with a Neostoic mindset which envisioned a close relationship between the ethical values and political interests of the citizen. The confluence of political theory and Realpolitik gave birth to three types of national identity, namely civitas popularis (democracy), regnum (kingship), and optimatium (aristocracy) as found in Scotland, Norway and Lithuania respectively. The study has shown the persistence of these key models of state-formation in the development of national identity from patriotism to territorial and ethnic nationalism. The abundance of the heroic in the Scottish case is explained as a vestige of the legacy of civic humanism, the traditional emphasis on the king-lines in the Norwegian case is a result of absolutism, while the lack of both in Lithuania is interpreted within an aristocratic model of national identity.

Stumke, Francois. "Increasing the competitve advantage of the smaller short-term insurance intermediary." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1012447.

Full text
Abstract:
In a fragmented and competitive industry, it is likely for the smaller roleplayer to be challenged in terms of competitiveness and market share. It is, therefore, important for the smaller organisation to etch its position in the market, by increasing its competitive advantage. In a milieu where there is a shift in distribution dynamics and the balance of power, and an increase in consumerism, the need to react is a pressing issue to be addressed by the smaller player. In the context of this study, the small and medium-low-impact intermediary in the South African short-term insurance industry is under pressure from, among others, direct distribution models and the increasing volume of the medium-high and high-impact intermediaries. It is determined in this study that the intermediary is challenged by all five market forces, as postulated by Porter in the model of “the five forces that shape industry competition”. The intermediary organisation must adopt positioning strategies, and differentiate its offering, in order to stay relevant in the industry. The short-term insurance intermediate industry is classified as a service industry; and therefore, it has unique factors to attend to. The positioning and differentiation strategies must be implemented without compromising the service quality levels. Furthermore, in the development of positioning strategies, it is essential to investigate the traditional marketing mix, while amplifying the mix with contemporary views of the subject. These form the basis of the positioning strategy; and from there, differentiation offerings can be shaped. A survey analysis of the product suppliers aims to identify the most important strategies for success. The study relies on the industry knowledge of the executives of these organisations, to steer the positioning strategies of the intermediary to fit in with their own positioning in the marketplace.

Kuznetsov, Andrei. "Port sustainability management system for smaller ports in Cornwall and Devon." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3136.

Full text
Abstract:
Many smaller ports in Cornwall and Devon (CAD) are situated in environmentally sensitive habitats and generate benefits for stakeholders and local communities. Such ports are often embedded in tourist based economies. Increasing environmental legislation is placing a strain on the resources of smaller ports making compliance a threat to profitability and thus the future of some ports and local economies. Over-reliance on environmental management systems (EMS) across the ports industry has predominated over the importance of holistic sustainability. This project develops and disseminates a port sustainability management system (PSMS) in CAD, assisting ports to plan marine and maritime operations more sustainably, to facilitate mitigation of potential risks, to increase knowledge and awareness of port sustainability, and to promote the adoption of a proactive stance towards sustainable port management. A constructivist philosophy suited a multiple methods research design which included ethnographic content analysis (ECA), statistical verification of qualitative coding, nine scoping interviews, and eight semi-structured interviews during the main phase of data collection. The seven Harbour Masters (HMs) in this phase represented all port governance types found in the UK. Charmaz’s grounded theory (GT) methodology guided the collection and analysis of primary data between August 2012 and February 2013 to create new theory using an inductive constructivist approach. Validation by fifteen of the thirty local HMs during industry testing revealed numerous advantages and benefits of deploying PSMS which is estimated to generate £50,000 worth of benefits per port annually, and £3,865,005 for the 15 participating ports over 5 years. A new model of smaller port sustainability has emerged. PSMS has eleven pillars of sustainability which underpin the spectrum of port operations. Within this model, each pillar is equally important in contributing to the overall sustainability of a port, and neglect of one could jeopardise sustainability overall and potentially cause a chain reaction with other pillars.

Full text
Abstract:
Small Tales is a 2D video game with hand drawn and watercolor painted assets that incorporates a series of vignettes centered on the collection of artifacts. Growing up, I experimented with and  investigated a wide variety of media, such as Alice and GameMaker but ultimately decided to  sharpen my fine arts skills and incorporate them in to video game engines in this thesis. A variety  of point and click adventure games such as the King's Quest and Monkey Island series inspired  the development of this game due to their emphasis on narrative and player interaction. This thesis developed from a series of earlier projects that helped me settle on four  primary objectives: vignetted narratives, player choice and consequences, visual and text  components working harmoniously, and replayability via randomized generation. A Processing  sketch emphasized the need for strong visual assets in addition to text-based narrative; in  addition to replayability via randomized strings or text for a unique narrative every iteration.  Afterwards, a Twine game further encouraged visual assets working with text, but solidified a  foundation in player choice and consequences. Finally, my first experiment in Unity with the  Adventure Creator helped me establish a functional workflow to achieve my four goals.   Small Tales itself revolves around a series of vignettes connected by the world of the  player character. Players wander an unfamiliar neighborhood to find artifacts that at the end of  the game reveal tiny stories about other worlds. The game was received well by players during  my defense for its ethereal atmosphere and for creating an engaging story world. But a handful  of suggestions from these same players could push the game to be even better. Small Tales will be available online after these critiques are taken under consideration.

Abstract:
I have an interest in transposing elements of sound, time, and motion into other forms. The thesis exhibition, small Trinity, presents my efforts to capture the essence of an explosion as a sculpture. The resulting objects provide viewers with the chance to examine an explosion in a stilled state, but also to consider the enormous powers we humans wield. Comprising the exhibition are three series: Exploded Vases (2014-15), Cast Explosions (2015) and small Trinity (2016). In each, an experimental methodology is applied to tracing, capturing and then casting the shape of small explosions in a manner that is raw and un-manipulated. For the title series, small Trinity (2016), I set a goal of casting an explosion 1/1,000,000th of the power of the first atomic bomb, Trinity (1945). Through a series of successively larger explosions and casts, the goal was achieved and presented as a series of aluminium, concrete and resin sculptures.
