Abstract:
In the mid-1960s Roger Smalley was a leading exponent of the music of Stockhausen (whose student he became). But except for his own performance of Klavierstück IX (at his piano recital which I did not hear) this early influence was hardly to be felt in the 60th birthday celebrations hosted by Trinity College of Music, London in May. Under the overall artistic direction of Douglas Finch, a series of concerts and recitals presented a cross-section of work from the past two decades.

Abstract:
In 1927, when Beryl Smalley began to study the Bible in the Middle Ages, I think it would be true to say that the Bible had almost no place in the minds of medieval historians. The strongly constitutional emphasis of the Oxford historical school of Stubbs and the tutors in Oxford, and the elaboration of this tradition by his pupils Tout and Tait in Manchester, was distinctly hostile to the intrusion of unsubstantial intellectual distractions into the business of the historian. It was generally understood of course that the Bible became important as a moving force in politics in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; but it could be left out of account, so it seemed, during the preceding thousand years. And this was not just an English phenomenon.

Abstract:
Ten years ago the International Bulletin of Missionary Research published a directory of 934 doctoral dissertations on mission-related subjects at theological schools and universities in the United States and Canada. Almost four decades of research were covered, from 1945 through 1982. In this issue we are pleased to present another directory of 512 North American dissertations for the decade 1982–1991. The compiler of the directory and author of the article below is William A. Smalley, a friend and colleague of many years' standing. Now retired in Hamden, Connecticut, he is a near neighbor of the Overseas Ministries Study Center. For twenty-three years Dr. Smalley was a translation consultant with the United Bible Societies, serving primarily in Southeast Asia. During part of that period he also edited Practical Anthropology, and for a time he was principal of the Toronto Institute of Linguistics, which prepares missionary candidates for language and culture learning. Earlier Smalley was a missionary linguist with the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Laos and Vietnam. His most recent book is Translation as Mission: Bible Translation in the Modern Missionary Movement (Macon, Georgia: Mercer University Press, 1991). The Editors

Abstract:
This paper examines the use of soundscape elements and mimetic sound-identities in the music of Denis Smalley. It attempts to reconcile these elements with the acousmatic tradition from which his music emerges, illustrating that it does not represent a contradiction, but rather a refined aesthetic where spectromorphological and soundscape concerns relate in symbiosis. A close look at key works, includingEmpty Vessels(1997),Valley Flow(1992) andPentes(1974), reveals how these elements manifest themselves in his work, and how the spectromorphological and soundscape aspects of these pieces work together toward shared goals.

Abstract:
Denis Smalley devoted himself to the elaboration of a method based on the analysis of spectral transformations by connoting sonorous motions and adopting metaphors borrowed from non-musical contexts. While considering Smalley's earlier theorising within the context of past and contemporary research, this paper focuses on the use of non-musical models in spectromorphological design in order to show how sonorous qualities, imaginative factors and extra-musical meanings concurred in defining new cognitive itineraries and in extending the terminology adopted, thereby establishing the basis of a new compositional approach.
