With the world suffering from energy crisis, Smart Grid is the expanding research topic that deals vigorously with the current problems. It promotes decentralized renewable energy generation system, participate many local energy producers to energy market, adds vehicle to grid (V2G), minimize the energy loss in the electrical system, and participate many active consumers to the real market. It is an emerging project that needs an expert from many fields, thus it opens door of opportunities for many people around the globe. The present thesis deals with the communication scenario in smart grid.

Abstract:
Increased penetration of distributed generations in distribution networks are altering the technical characteristics of the grid, pushing them to operate closer to their limits of safe and reliable operation. New renewable generators connecting to the distribution network will be constrained due to the presence of thermal and voltage constraints during times of low demand and high generation output. The traditional reinforcement planning by means of increasing the capacity of network assets can be very costly and usually ends up in overinvested network with low utilization rates of the assets.

n the electrical power grid, the power load is not constant but continuouslychanging. This depends on many different factors, among which the habits of theconsumers, the yearly seasons and the hour of the day. The continuous change inenergy consumption requires the power grid to be flexible. If the energy provided bygenerators is lower than the demand, this is usually compensated by using renewablepower sources or stored energy until the power generators have adapted to the newdemand. However, if buffers are depleted the output may not meet the demandedpower and could cause power outages. The

The Master Thesis is part of the Smart Grid Gotlandproject. This project aims at implementing smart grid solutionson the island of Gotland in order to be able to efficientlyintegrate large quantities of renewable energy production. In situations of high wind power production and lowconsumption, energy export problems may occur betweenGotland and the mainland. A novel approach to manageanticipated congestions, compared to traditional gridreinforcements, consists of using flexibility from demandresponse(DR) resources. However, such an approach presentschallenges as it requires both technical and

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are active loads as they increase the demand for electricity and introduce several challenges to electrical distribution feeders during charging. Demand Response (DR) or performing load control in commercial buildings along with the deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) and ice storage systems at the building level can improve the efficiency of electricity grids and mitigate expensive peak demand/energy charges for buildings. This research aims to provide such a solution to make EV penetration transparent to the grid. Firstly, this research contributes to the develo
