Abstract:
Obtaining multi-objective optimization solutions with a small number of points smartly distributed along the Pareto front is a challenge. Optimization methods, such as the normalized normal constraint (NNC), propose the use of a filter to achieve a smart Pareto front distribution. The NCC optimization method presents several disadvantages related with the procedure itself, initial condition dependency, and computational burden. In this article, the epsilon-variable multi-objective genetic algorithm (ev-MOGA) is presented. This algorithm characterizes the Pareto front in a smart way and removes the disadvantages of the NNC method. Finally, examples of a three-bar truss design and controller tuning optimizations are presented for comparison purposes.

Abstract:
Product families are frequently used to provide consumers with a variety of appealing products and to help maintain reasonably low production costs for manufacturers. Three common objectives in the design of product families are used to balance the interests of both consumers and manufacturers. These objectives are to maximize (i) product performance, (ii) product distinctiveness as perceived by the consumer, and (iii) product commonality as seen by the manufacturer. In this thesis, three methods are introduced that use multiobjective optimization and Smart Pareto filtering to satisfy the three objectives of product family design. The methods are progressive in nature and begin with the selection of product family members using Smart filtering and develop through the establishment of scale- based product platforms to the design of combined scale- based and module-based product platforms. Each of the methods is demonstrated using a well-know universal electric motor example problem. The results of each method are then compared to a benchmark electric motor product family that was previously defined in the literature. Additionally, a pressure vessel example problem is used to further demonstrate the first of the three methods.

Abstract:
This chapter is aimed at introducing SIM and USIM card forensics, which pertains to the Small Scale Digital Device Forensics (SSDDF) (Harril, & Mislan, 2007) field. Particularly, we would like to pinpoint what follows. First, we will introduce the smart card world, giving a sufficiently detailed description regarding the main physical and logical main building blocks. Then we will give a general overview on the extraction of the standard part of the file system. Moreover, we will present an effective methodology to acquire all the observable memory content, that is, the whole set of files which represent the full file system of such devices. Finally, we will discuss some potential cases of data hiding at the file system level, presenting at the same time a detailed and useful procedure used by forensics practitioners to deal with such a problem.

Abstract:
This chapter presents how root cause analysis based on fault tree technique can be used to study mal-operation of protective relay in a smart power grid. This approach is used to identify disturbances first and root cause of mal operation of protective relays which may lead to unnecessary tripping and hence to blackout. Once the critical root causes are identified, mitigation measures first such as blocking protection functions and digital filters may be used in view of increasing the reliability of the considered protection system. The proposed approach has many advantages as it allows obtaining an important quantitative figure (security). These permits to strongly strengthen the elements of the protecting system which are most likely appropriate to failure and hence the impact on the overall system's cost is significant. Another main advantage is that it takes into account the reliability of the software part of the system which is considered to have a significant contribution in the overall reliability of the protecting system.

Cloud services are ubiquitous today and increasingly used for a variety of purposes, including personal and professional communication, social networking, media streaming, calendar management, file storage etc. In recent years, a fast evolution of cloud services from private applications to corporate usage has been observed. This has led to the question of how private and business cloud services can be dual-accessed through a single device, in particular a mobile device that is used as part of a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy. This chapter considers the issues that arise from a consolidation of private and professional applications when accessed from a single device and introduces the term “personal cloud” to characterise such situations. It also surveys recent work in the field and finally presents an approach to cloud governance from a business perspective focusing in particular on security tokens, hardware keys and smart containers, thereby providing a glimpse into the future of IT service personalization.

Abstract:
For the past 100 years, film has been almost the exclusive medium for capturing, storing, and displaying radiographic images. Film is a fixed medium with usually only one set of images available. Today, the radiologic sciences are on the brink of a new age. In particular, Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) technology allows for a near filmless process with all of the flexibility of digital systems. PACS consists of image acquisition devices, storage archiving units, display stations, computer processors, and database management systems. These components are integrated by a communications network system. Filmless radiology is a method of digitizing traditional films into electronic files that can be viewed and saved on a computer. This technology generates clearer and easier-to-read images, allowing the patient the chance of a faster evaluation and diagnosis. The time saved may prove to be a crucial element in facilitating the patient’s treatment process. With filmless radiology, images taken from various medical sources can be manipulated to enhance resolution, increasing the clarity of the image. Images can also be transferred internally within hospital departments and externally to other locations such as the office of the patient’s doctor or medical specialist in other parts of the world. This is made possible through the picture-archiving and communication system (Dreyer, Mehta, & Thrall, 2001), which electronically captures, transmits, displays, and saves images into digital archives for use at any given time. The PACS functions as a state-of-the-art repository for long-term archiving of digital images, and includes the backup and bandwidth to safeguard uninterrupted network availability. The objective of the picture-archiving and communications system is to improve the speed and quality of clinical care by streamlining radiological service and consultation. With instant access to images from virtually anywhere, hospital doctors and clinicians can improve their work processes and speed up the delivery of patient care. Besides making film a thing of the past, the likely benefits would include reduced waiting times for images and reports, and the augmented ability of clinicians since they can get patient information and act upon it much more quickly. It also removes all the costs associated with hard film and releases valuable space currently used for storage. According to Dr. Lillian Leong, Chairman of the Radiology IT Steering Group of the Hong Kong Medical Authroity, a single hospital can typically save up to 2.5 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately US$321,000) a year in film processing cost (Intel, 2007). The growing importance of PACS on the fight against highly infectious disease such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is also identified (Zhang & Xue, 2003). In Hong Kong, there was no PACS-related project until the establishment of Tseung Kwan O Hospital (TKOH) in 1998. The TKOH is a 600-bed acute hospital with a hospital PACS installed for the provision of filmless radiological service. The design and management of the PACS for patient care was discussed in the first edition of this encyclopedia (Tong & Wong, 2005). The TKOH was opened in 1999 with PACS installed. At the beginning, due to immature PACS technologies, the radiology service was operating with film printing. A major upgrade was done in 2003 for the implementation of server clustering, network resilience, liquid crystal display (LCD), smart card, and storage-area-network (SAN) technologies. This upgrade has greatly improved the reliability of the system. Since November 2003, TKOH has started filmless radiology service for the whole hospital. It has become one of the first filmless hospitals in the Greater China region (Seto, Tsang, Yung, Ching, Ng, & Ho, 2003; Tsou, Goh, Kaw, & Chee, 2003).

Abstract In hydraulic systems, the presence of foreign material in the system oil accounts for the majority of system troubles due to mechanical wear of components, sticking of different parts etc. Therefore, it is essential to maintain an adequate cleanliness level of the fluid at all times through filtration. Mechanical filters are used for this purpose, to separate solid particles from the system oil. As a hydraulic filter gets accumulated with dirt throughout its service life, the pressure drop over the filter element increases. This pressure drop is typically used for determining the lifetime of a filter element: once a predetermined pressure drop at certain flow conditions has been reached, the filter has accumulated enough dirt to require servicing or replacement. In this paper, a correlation model has been developed to describe the effects of flow and fluid properties on the dirt holding capacity and the service life duration of a hydraulic filter. For this purpose, extensive laboratory tests have been carried out in order to measure the pressure drop development of a filter unit at different oil flow rates, viscosities and gravimetric contamination levels. The work in this paper has been done as part of the initial research for investigating the effects of different flow and fluid parameters on hydraulic filtration. The aim of the overall research project is to develop an IoT-enabled smart filter unit that could predict its remaining lifetime, and estimate the condition of the system oil as well.

The demand for clean and sustainable energy sources continuously increases. One of the promising ways to provide electrical power is using fuel cells. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) represents the most common type of fuel cells. However, PEMFCs have not yet been fully commercialized because of the high cost and low performance. A main part of PEMFC, which significantly contributes to the cost and weight is the bipolar plate (BPP). The US Department of Energy (DOE) has recommended some physical properties for BPP for sustainable commercialization of PEMFC. Those set properties have yet to be met. Conductive polymer composites (CPCs) use conductive fillers such as carbon nanotube (CNT), carbon fiber (CF), and graphite (Gr) to impart electrical and thermal conductivities and can potentially provide an optimum combination of weight, cost, mechanical properties and conductivity characteristics for BPPs. In the current work, CPCs of polycarbonate (PC) filled with singular filler of CNT, binary fillers of CNT and CF and ternary fillers of CNT, CF and Gr were fabricated using melt mixing method followed by compression molding. The through-plane and in-plane electrical conductivities of the CPCs were investigated. The results showed that the electrical percolation thresholds for the PC-CNT is ∼1 wt. % CNT in both the through-plane and in-plane directions. Addition of 3 wt. % CNT to PC composites with 10 - 30 wt. % CF improved the conductivity performance. It was noticed increasing CF content from 20 to 30 wt. % did not yield a big change in conductivity, so that at 20 wt. % CF, the through-plane and in-plane electrical conductivities are 0.11 S.cm−1 and 6.4 S.cm−1 respectively. Moreover, using 20 wt. % CF will allow for higher loading of graphite. To further enhance the conductivities towards the DOE recommendations, 30 wt. % Gr was introduced to the PC composite with binary filler (i.e., 3 wt. % CNT and 20 wt. % CF). The results showed that the through-plane and in-plane electrical conductivities were increased to 1.5 S.cm−1 and 13.5 S.cm−1, respectively. These properties recommend a potential application of polycarbonate based CPCs for BPP manufacturing.

Abstract:
In this work the Multiresolution Topology Optimization (MTOP) scheme is investigated to obtain high resolution designs of phononic (elastic) materials, focusing primarily on acoustic waveguides. We demonstrate via numerical examples that the resolution of the design can be significantly improved without refining the finite element mesh. The first one is the simplest case where one might be interested in maximizing the energy reaching certain parts of the domain. The second and more interesting example is the creation of different propagation patterns for different frequencies, thus creating smart filters. The results demonstrate the power and potential of our computational framework to design sophisticated acoustic wave devices.

Abstract:
A new smart wheel has been designed and tested. The smart wheel is able to measure the three forces and the three moments acting at the wheel-ground interface. The wheel is based on an original structural concept and it appears to be simple enough to be implemented in future automobiles. The paper presents the concept, the design issues and the experimental testing of the smart wheel. The structural part is composed basically by three spokes whose deformations (depending on the forces applied to the wheel) are sensed by means of strain gauges. The strain gauges signals can be filtered, amplified and digitally converted before they are transmitted to a remote receiver. Multi-Objective Programming has been used to design the system in order to reduce its mass and to maximise the sensor accuracy. After an accurate calibration phase, a series of experimental tests have been performed. First, the dynamic testing of the sensor has been completed through indoor tests, then the smart wheel has been fitted to a production passenger car. The performance of the smart wheel fits well the need of improving the active safety of automobiles. In other terms, the information given by the wheel, allowing to sense the three forces and the three moments, should lead to considerable improvement of the ABS and ESP/VDC performance with respect to today control logics.

The flexibility offered by additive manufacturing (AM) technologies to fabricate complex geometries poses several challenges to non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and quality control (QC) techniques. Existing NDE and QC techniques are not optimized for AM processes, materials, or parts. Such lack of reliable means to verify and qualify AM parts is a significant barrier to further industrial adoption of AM technologies. Electromechanical impedance measurements have been recently introduced as an alternative solution to detect anomalies in AM parts. With this approach, piezoelectric wafers bonded to the part under test are utilized as collocated sensors and actuators. Due to the coupled electromechanical characteristics of piezoelectric materials, the measured electrical impedance of the piezoelectric wafer depends on the mechanical impedance of the part under test, allowing build defects to be detected. This paper investigates the effectiveness of impedance-based NDE approach to detect internal porosity in AM parts. This type of build defects is uniquely challenging as voids are normally embedded within the structure and filled with unhardened model or supporting material. The impact of internal voids on the electromechanical impedance of AM parts is studied at several frequency ranges.

Abstract:
Airframe noise is a significant part of the overall noise produced by typical, transport-class aircraft during the approach and landing phases of flight. Leading-edge slat noise is a prominent source of airframe noise. The concept of a slat-cove filler was proposed in previous work as an effective means of mitigating slat noise. Bench-top models were developed at 75% scale to study the feasibility of producing a functioning slat-cove filler. Initial results from several concepts led to a more-focused effort investigating a deformable structure based upon pseudoelastic SMA materials. The structure stows in the cavity between the slat and main wing during cruise and deploys simultaneously with the slat to guide the aerodynamic flow suitably for low noise. A qualitative parametric study of SMA-enabled, slat-cove filler designs was performed on the bench-top. Computational models were developed and analyses were performed to assess the displacement response under representative aerodynamic load. The bench-top and computational results provide significant insight into design trades and an optimal design.
