Full textSmartphones is a tool that we use everyday. Smartphones is being used for all kinds of different things, from making calls, to sharing our lives thru social media, to playing games. Smartphones is a without a doubt an important part of our lives and it´s not likely to become any less important. Now a school has openly released a statement that says they are prohibiting smartphones during classes. With the argument that the students becomes to stressed by their smartphone. This is a big step to take and the question is if it´s the right decision. The purpose of this study is to examine and describe what the underlying arguments are for the school to forbid smartphones during classes. To make it possible for us to achive the purpose of this study we have choosen to use an deductive approach and a qualitative method for gathering our data. An qualitaitve content analysis on swedish daily press and personal interviews are the methods that have been conducted. The result of this study shows that the views regarding smartphone ban is different both among the respondants, but also in the qualitative content analysis. Teachers handle smartphone ban different and the views regarding this are different. One conclusion which is brought up is that it´s up to the teachers themselfs to decide how they want to handle their classroom, but central guidelines will need to be decided. Full textAbstract Purpose and objective The purpose of this study was to survey the use of mobile phones amongst people and how it coincides with mental health. We also wanted to investigate whether or not we could create a behavioral change amongst the mobile phone users and thereby see if it affected their mental health. To achieve this objective we emanated from two questions: (1) Is there a relationship between Smartphone addiction and subjective mental health? (2) Can a short intervention, where you decrease the time spent on smartphones amongst users improve their subjective well-being? Method To get an insight in how widespread the use of mobile phones is and if it affects subjective well-being we chose to collect data through surveys because it was time effective and gave a wide group of people. To be able to create a behavioral change we concluded we had to actively interact with the respondents, so we chose to perform an intervention. During the intervention the participants would reduce their mobile phone usage to the greatest extent possible to see if their mental health could be improved. Result According to the correlation analysis, there is a weak relationship r = - 0,218 between mental health and smartphone addiction which is statistically significant (p=0.013). Analysis of survey data showed a large group classified as smartphone addicted = 48.2% and 51.8% as non-smartphone addicted. This shows that more people are smartphone addicted in this study than other studies have found. The intervention failed due to many dropouts. Conclusions The result showed a weak negative correlation between mental health and smartphone addiction. Causal correlation was not clarified and further research is required on the subject in order to determine whether mental health issues leads to more smartphone usage or if a lot of smartphone usage leads to mental health issues by itself.

Full textSmartphones have become a natural part of our everyday life and smart applications constantly give us new possibilities. While there are many positive aspects of the technology, it is important to examine what the consequences could be of the technological development. Smartphones have increased in availability and we have become addicted to the opportunities everyday technologies such as smartphones offer us. This study examined the relationships between personality traits, symptoms of mental illness and smartphone addiction among students (n = 103) using web-based assessments. Smartphone addiction was assessed with SAS-SV. We found positive associations between mental symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and smartphone addiction. Neuroticism had a positive relationship with smartphone addiction but other Big Five personality traits such as extraversion and conscientiousness showed negative association with smartphone addiction. Regression analysis showed that neuroticism positively, but conscientiousness negatively predicted smartphone addiction in our sample. We discussed our results according to the previous literature and suggest that further longitudinal research is needed to determine possible causality between the measured factors.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) such as the Internet and smartphones entered our lives only about 20 years ago, yet in that short time they have deeply rewired the way society and individuals all around the world function. This has led to questions and investigations regarding how the frequent use of technology influences our societal and psychological health. This thesis work aims to contribute some insight on this subject through four research papers about three of the most popular ICTs - smartphones, social media and the Internet and through the lens of three research questions - 1) Is addiction the correct framework to use when researching problematic ICT use?; 2) What are the effects of culture on problematic ICT use?; and 3) What specific uses are associated with ICT-related problems? The conclusions we arrive at are the following. At this time, addiction is not a suitable term to use in the research on ICT related problems. Secondly, certain specific uses are associated with problematic consequences of ICT use whereas other uses are not, therefore it is unwise to pathologize the entire ICT. Thirdly, the uses that are associated with problematic ICT use are different depending on the culture of the user. In one culture a particular ICT use can be problematic, whereas in another country it may be adaptive. Fourthly, certain aspects of ICT use appear to be more or less constant across cultures such as the most popular smartphone uses and the underlying factors of problematic ICT use.

As smartphones grow ubiquitous, they have completely overturned the way people use the Internet, particularly the regular study habits and lifestyle of junior high school students. In the past, even though Internet addiction of students was a major concern for parents and educators, the influence of the Internet temporarily disappears when students are away from computers at home or Internet cafes. However, compact, portable, and Internet-connected smartphones are now a part of people’s everyday lives, pushing teenagers to grow even more attached to smartphones and more susceptible to addiction. This research summarized the factors of addiction through literature review, and then framed three major dimensions of research. usage behaviors, personality traits, and environmental factors. Junior high schools teachers were surveyed and the decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach was used to determine the influence and the causal relationship of the three dimensions of research. The research results illustrate that the personality trait of “low-conscientiousness” is a driving factor with the highest relation. “External pressure” and “parent-child interaction” are critical core criteria. Finally, “interpersonal interaction” has the most influence, but it must be combined with or controlled by other factors to generate such influence. The research results indicated that “parent-child interaction” and “external pressure” are significant factors of addiction, while “personality trait” may generate many indirect influences. On the other hand, “external pressure” is influential in smartphone addiction. Moreover, since “productive behavior” and “foundational behavior” have low interaction with other factors, they can be monitored separately to mitigate addiction. This research also made specific suggestions for educators and parents, aiming to help them learn more about smartphone addiction of junior high school students and possible mitigation approaches.

Nowadays, it is popular for everyone to have a smartphone. Multi-functional and convenient efficacy of the smartphone changes daily life for the people. It has also caused smartphone addiction. In this regard, many artists employ satire to their works in order to inform the public the seriousness of smartphone addiction. However, most of those works are graphic works. Some products are also created implying satire but those rarely related to smartphone addiction. Therefore, this article aims to propose product designs that satirize smartphone addiction. Firstly, literature reviews of the evolution of the mobile phones, definitions and approaches of satire, the negative effects of smartphone addiction, and the functions of phone holders are taken into account. Secondly, existing creations or products of satire and related effects of smartphone addiction are analyzed in order to summarize the design principles for satire. Some themes related negative effects of smartphone addiction are also defined. Following, product design guidelines are suggested and the mandala chart is employed in this step for idea creations. Five phone holders based on satire approaches on smartphone addiction are developed and resulted. In the article, applications of satirical objects derived from smartphone addiction are linked with modern product designs. The works urge the public to pay attention to the usages of smartphones. Through this experiment and implementation, the design creations explain diverse meaning and value.

With the popularity of smartphones and mobile Internet matures, smartphones have become daily media communication tools for everyone, and thus change a user's lifestyle. Smartphone addiction can ensue from Mobile Apps. This research investigates the relationship between smartphone addiction and family background, basic personal information and personality traits of students from five vocational high schools in the regions of Wufeng and Dali. Among 625 students, 583 questionnaires are recovered. The research results are illustrated as follows: First, the result reveals 28.82% of students are addicted to their smartphones. The majority is in second grade, and the proportion of boys is more than girls. Those who engage in leisure and entertainment for more than 7 hours a day show obvious smartphone addiction. Secondly, the students who spend more time in studying present lower proportion of smartphone addiction. Those who are on line for average more than 4 hours per day show higher percentage of addiction. Compared to non-addicts, addicts prefer to use online video. Finally, children of parents with master degrees addict to smartphones less likely than whose parents have education level of elementary schools. Concerning personality traits of students, there are substantial correlation to Good-natured、Self-discipline、Neurotic and Introvert or Extrovert. Consequently, individual factors examined in this study can offer solutions to prevent students from smartphone addiction effectively.

Excessive use of smartphones has emerged as a substantive worldwide social issue when smartphone penetration has increased. The “smartphone addiction” is considered as one form of technological addictions. We here reviewed the evolution of substance and behavior addiction, examining the process of diagnosis for mental illness. In this thesis, we developed a self-reported questionnaire, proposed diagnostic criteria, and designed a mobile application (App) to identify smartphone addiction. The Smartphone Addiction Inventory is a 26-item self-reported questionnaire modified from the Chen Internet Addiction Scale. By exploratory factor analysis, smartphone addiction showed four components: tolerance, withdrawal, compulsive symptoms, and functional impairment, which are all variants on aspects of Internet addiction. Next, we proposed diagnostic criteria for psychiatrists’ interviews based on the criteria of broad spectrum Internet addiction and specific Internet gaming disorder. We applied the diagnostic accuracy of these diagnostic criteria using clinical global impression as a gold standard. Smartphone addiction was similar to broad spectrum Internet addiction rather than the specific Internet gaming disorder because smartphone use is characterized by the use of multiple Apps rather than a single App. This is the first study to use a mobile App to identify smartphone addiction with a novel Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) analysis. Our findings revealed that the participants with longer smartphone use tended to underestimate using duration. This underestimation explained the differences in the reliability and validity of excessive use and tolerance relative to the psychiatrists’ diagnostic interviews. The daily use count (Frequency) and the frequency trend (F-trend) measured by EMD analysis were associated with smartphone addiction, which was identified by psychiatrists. Moreover, we quantified the criterion “excessive use” by daily use duration and frequency, and quantified the criterion “tolerance” by the trend for the median duration of an epoch. We further aimed to incorporate App-recorded data into psychiatric criteria for the diagnosis of smartphone addiction, and examine the predictive ability of the App-recorded data for the diagnosis. The App-incorporated diagnosis demonstrated good accuracy for smartphone addiction diagnosis. Corresponding to two core symptoms (excessive use and increasing use), three App-generated parameters (the Duration, Frequency, and F-trend parameters) significantly predicted the diagnosis of smartphone addiction. The increasingly accessible and quantifiable App-generated parameters provide new insight into identifying smartphone addiction and facilitate large-scale cross-sectional and longitudinal studies because this approach is easier to implement than a self-reported questionnaire or diagnostic interviews.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current situation of smartphone using psychological needs, personality traits, smartphone using behaviors, smartphone addiction in high school students, and to analyze the differences for each variable of students with diverse backgrounds. In addition, we also examine the predictable effects for background variables, smartphone using psychological needs, personality traits, smartphone using behaviors, smartphone addiction. The path models of above items have also been constructed and verified for high school students. A total sample of 1,222 high school students were enrolled from Taipei City, Taichung City and Kaohsiung City through the use of questionnaire survey method with stratified cluster sampling in this study. By using " smartphone using behavior scale", “smartphone usage survey”, “smartphone using psychological needs scale”, and “personality traits scale”, we finally reached some conclusions by several specific statistical methods including descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis of variance, Chi-square test, multi-choice questions with multiple answers, stepwise multiple regression, structural equation modeling, and bootstrapping. We summarized the main conclusions as follows: 1.The strongest smartphone using psychological needs in high school students are the “cognition needs”, and gender differences are displayed in smartphone using psychological needs of high school students, but not exist in grade or academic performance. 2.The most significant personality trait is the “agreeableness”, and the personality traits of high school students can be significantly affected by gender, grade and academic performance. 3.The rates of prevalence and internet penetration are increased by about 98% in high school students. They frequently connect a home Wi-Fi network to the internet, and 36.2% students purchase a “unlimited data plan” from telecommunications service providers. The frequently used applications are softwares of social networking, communication and chatting. In addition, differences in gender, grade and academic performance can make significant differences of smartphone using behaviors in high school students. 4. Nearly 65% students have a tendency to smartphone addiction, and " health and interpersonal problems " are the most serious addiction. Gender differences are not demonstrated in smartphone addiction of high school students, but present differences in grade or academic performance. 5.Background variables, smartphone using psychological needs, personality traits, and smartphone using behaviors markedly display joint anticipation for smartphone addiction, and the entertainment needs demonstrate the greatest predictive power in this survey. 6.The goodness-of-fit test of smartphone using psychological needs, personality traits, smartphone using behaviors, and evaluation mode of smartphone addiction in high school students describe a well theoretical result and consist with our observational data. 7. Smartphone using psychological needs demonstrate positive effect for smartphone addiction. Moreover, both personality traits and smartphone using behaviors display partial intermediary effects to smartphone using psychological needs and smartphone addiction. Based on these findings, we finally provide some suggestions for individuals including high school students, parents, school teachers, counselors, and administrative agencies for further investigation.

The study aims to investigate the current situation of smartphone addiction of elementary school high-grade students and figure out the differences, correlations, and predictable effects when considering their personalities. 946 student participants were randomly selected from high-grade students at public elementary schools in Keelung City. The effective questionnaire responding rate is 98.95%. Two questionnaires, “Smartphone Addiction Tendency Inventory” and the “Personality quality chart for elementary school high-grade students,” were developed to evaluable the valuables which this study intended to investigate. At the same time, qualitative responses were also collected to understand the in-depth insight and context. 5 items are included in the scale of the “smartphone addiction tendency” with the .91 in Cronbach’s alpha, while 5 items are in the scale of the “personality quality chart” with .83 in Cronbach’s alpha. The study got the following conclusions 1. About 70% of high-grade students at elementary schools in Keelung City have smartphones, mainly based on moderate dependent. a. 68.4 % of high-grade students at elementary schools in Keelung City use smartphone. b. Most of these students use smartphone after school for the purpose of entertainment and using social platform. The benefits of using smartphone are convenient and versatile while the drawbacks are unhealthy to individual when using overtime, money-wasting, and bringing negative impact to academic performance. c. The degree of self-assessment dependence on smartphone is mainly moderately dependent. Six factors that make students depend on smartphone are entertainment, instrumentality, sociality, convenience, dependence, and physical harm. 2. Smartphone addiction cases for high-grade students at elementary schools in Keelung City are normal. a. The normal level of smartphone addiction occupied 67.1%,while the warning level accounted for 12.4%, while the danger level accounted for 20.5%. b. There are significant differences between smartphone addiction and grade, parents’ economic income, types of mobile phones student-owned, seniority of use, and average daily usage time. The higher the grade level, the higher the parents’ income, the better the smartphone type, the longer the seniority of use, and the more time spent each day, the more obvious the tendency of smartphone addiction. 3. Smartphone addiction is positively correlated to neuroticism. a. Smartphone addiction is positively correlated to neuroticism, indicating that the more unstable the personality traits, the more serious the tendency of smartphone addiction. b. Extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness are negatively correlated with the smartphone addiction, indicating that the higher the extroversion, openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness of personality traits, the less obvious the tendency of smartphone addiction. 4. "Neuroticism" personality has the highest positive predictability for smartphone addiction. a. The most predictive variables of personality traits for smartphone addiction are " Neuroticism," " Openness," and " Conscientiousness." b. "Neuroticism" personality has the highest positive predictability for smartphone addiction. It is shown that the more emotionally unstable the students of elementary school high-grade are, the easier they are influenced by surrounding environments and feel sad to life pressures, which in turn, becoming more addictive to smartphone. This study presents an academic model which helps to figure out the relationship between smartphone addiction and personalities and demonstrate the demographic analysis to understand the current condition of smartphone addiction across high-grade students at elementary schools in Keelung City. The results give practical suggestions to education institute, parents, and student themselves respectively for addiction improvement.
