Abstract:
In Latin America, small and micro enterprises (SMEs) are considered a tool for combating poverty due to their high capacity to generate employment, in addition to being a significant source of GDP. This article seeks to demonstrate that SMEs, as a subject of credit, can be an attractive option for private commercial banks in Peru. For this purpose, two factors are examined: the Chilean experience of some years ago, since Peru presents the same conditions that made this possible in the neighboring country, and the analysis of the variables that affect the development of SME financing. It is shown that in 1992 the sector of financing to these companies shows great attractions for the financial sector, since there is an insufficient credit offer, the banking entities authorized to provide financing to SMEs are very few, the banks are increasing their money deposits. But at the same time there are risks, such as the arrival of large foreign banks in the market, the emergence of other credit institutions (edpymes) and a high risk of non-repayment of loans.

Abstract:
Purpose Given the unresolved question about which causal conditions contribute to accelerated internationalization among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from weak institutional environment, this paper aims to combine theoretically relevant antecedents of domestic networks relationships (weak or strong domestic ties) and decision-making logic (effectuation or causation) to explore the configurations that are the most promising for explaining accelerated internationalization. Design/methodology/approach This study uses fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to examine the accelerated internationalization of 33 contrarian cases of SMEs located in weak institutional environment. The data set has been collected through in-depth interviews with managers in Colombia (21 cases) and Peru (12 cases). Building on the findings, an integrative model for accelerated internationalization is presented. Findings The authors found that the combination of weak domestic ties and effectuation logic accelerated the internationalization of SMEs with fewer resource constraints. In contrast, strong domestic ties and causation behavior lead to accelerated internationalization of SMEs with greater resource constraints. They propose a model to help enrich the existing literature about the causal configurations for achieving accelerated internationalization in SMEs from weak institutional environment. Originality/value The contribution of this study is to provide empirical evidence to address three shortcomings in the literature. First, the mixed results regarding the impact of strong and weak domestic ties and decision-making logic in the accelerated internationalization of SMEs; second, the limited research on domestic networks; and third, the scarce investigation in weak institutional environment, where the emphasis on constrained resources is higher.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In the present context, all business activities need to reach, in addition to economic and environmental viability, social legitimacy. The numerous conflicts sparked by economic activities in different areas of the country clearly demonstrate the critical importance of getting the acceptance of the populations and the local authorities of the area in which the activity is performed. The SMEs of the Gamarra trading center are not oblivious to this reality, and realize that they need to obtain and maintain their social viability in the environment where they operate. While acceptance is not a guarantee of business success, it contributes to create the conditions for the good neighborly relations that facilitate social and environmental management. Given the socioeconomic conditions that characterize this sector, in order to achieve this social viability, SME leaders must keep in mind from the start that social viability requires a sustained commitment over time. This must be reflected in shared efforts during the planning of the relationship and the support activities with the local populations and their authorities. Support by the local population for SME activities in the Gamarra trading center is not a natural process. To achieve it, it is necessary to develop specific, well planned activities and to count with sufficient financial, technical and human resources. Hopefully, these efforts should allow the building of strategic partnerships between the community, the local authorities and the businesses, which would bring forward the identification, definition and implementation of local sustainable development projects. The present article, called "Social management problems and economic performance in Peruvian SMEs belonging to Gamarra‐ type trading centers (2006‐2015)", is an important tool containing basic concepts about what are social management, conflict management, social responsibility, sustainable development and communication, among others. Its goal is to establish a standardized level of knowledge to contribute to the development of social management strategies, in order to reconcile local development, the population welfare and business success, within the area of influence of the SMEs of the Gamarra trading center. Abstract:
This paper examines how the institutional environment (from a multi-level approach) and the moderating role of innovation networks and rural location explain which mechanism (institutional fostering or escapism) underlies the phenomenon of accelerated internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises. By analyzing a dataset of 2289 firms from Argentina, Colombia, and Peru, the results suggest that the access of strategic resources and capabilities may either reinforce an institutional fostering or institutional escapism effect. The findings show that institutional fostering is associated with formal institutional voids and rural location, while institutional escapism is associated with local informal institutions, corporate sustainability certifications, and innovation networks. The institutional escapism effect is higher for firms that have social or environmental certifications. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Abstract:
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have a considerable role in most developing countries because they are able to develop and improve the economy. Whereas e-commerce is also a vital subject in the field of research, where they offer significant benefits for these countries. However, the adoption of e-commerce in developing countries by SMEs is low due to several factors, including the lack of a suitable model for the adoption of e-commerce. Therefore, some of the most widely used models for the adoption of e-commerce in developing countries were highlighted, which were Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) established by Molla and Licker (2005), Technology Organisation Environment (TOE) Integration of TOE and TAM, Perceived eReadiness Model (PERM) and E-commerce Success Factors. The exploratory research was conducted in this study. Finally, some recommendations were reached that may give the researchers a better understanding of the adoption of e-commerce in developing countries which they have not yet started using e-commerce

Abstract:

Peru’s pomegranate productivity is 10.3 tons, which is almost a third of that produced by Turkey (27.5 tons) and almost half of that produced by Spain (20 tons). In this sense, it is necessary that the organizations know the importance of quality management to monitor and maintain product quality. It is important to consider the appropriate methods to adopt and implement quality management so that MSEs may develop a better understanding of how quality management systems should be implemented and the significant, positive impact they generate. This document proposes a model based on quality management and good practices, which frames a series of activities and criteria to provide an objective diagnosis. This model was developed based on information gathered from SMEs in the district of Santiago de Ica.

There is a high margin of informality in small- and medium-sized companies in the bakery sector because of their lack of focus and poor standardization of their activities. Bakery SMEs, the activities of which have not yet been standardized, usually perform activities inefficiently, unnecessarily extending production times. The current average productivity of Lima-based SMEs is 1.7, a figure that, when compared with countries in the Pacific Alliance, is low. In addition, currently no methodologies seek continuous process improvement. Therefore, a Lean Process Management model was established to reduce activities and times. As validation, a production time simulation was performed in a warehouse, increasing the productivity to 2.08, with a percentage variation of 87.39% when compared with the initial productivity.

This paper proposes an information security risk management model that allows mitigating the threats to which SMEs in Peru are exposed. According to studies by Ernst Young, 90% of companies in Peru are not prepared to detect security breaches, and 51% have already been attacked. In addition, according to Deloitte, only 10% of companies maintain risk management indicators. The model consists of 3 phases: 1. Inventory the information assets of the company, to conduct the risk analysis of each one; 2. Evaluate treatment that should be given to each risk, 3. Once the controls are implemented, design indicators to help monitor the implemented safeguards. The article focuses on the creation of a model that integrates a standard of risk management across the company with a standard of IS indicators to validate compliance, adding as a contribution the results of implementation in a specific environment. The proposed model was validated in a pharmaceutical SME in Lima, Peru. The results showed a 71% decrease in risk, after applying 15 monitoring and training controls, lowering the status from a critical level to an acceptable level between 1.5 and 2.3, according to the given assessment.

In the Peruvian market there is a great demand for the improvement of the service and quality of the products, that is why many SMEs look for low-cost alternatives that allow them to optimize their activities and thus be able to assure the quality of the service. The problem is that there are many difficulties when implementing tools or techniques due to high costs or lack of knowledge, therefore a productivity model is proposed focused on six sigma and lean manufacturing methodologies in order to adapt the needs of SMEs with 4 phases can analyze, design, implement and monitor requirements in order to reduce mismanagement of service quality, cost savings and decrease product returns.

The sector of small industrial companies has a problem with not being able to satisfy total market demand, mainly due to factories not capitalizing on their production capacity. Consequently, a method to solve downtime related problems has been proposed, which consists of applying 5S to reduce dead time stemming from disorder and uncleanliness, while simultaneously applying value stream mapping (VSM) to find the most efficient method to conduct processes. In conclusion, by implementing these tools in this manner, it was proven that businesses in this sector could operate with up to 73% efficiency.

The logistics processes of companies seek an adequate supply of merchandize, streamline processes, reduce costs, and distribution of their products to the customer in an efficient manner and allow them to develop corrective planning in order to be competitive in the market. However, these processes are less efficient in importing companies of the SME sector. Therefore, this article proposes the application of a change management model to improve the logistics process that generates a real transformation. This model is structured in three phases: first, pre-Implementation, which refers to participatory leadership and resistance to change; second, implementation of logistics management; and third, sustainability of the model over time. The model was validated in a Peruvian SME importer of household goods, whose satisfactory results implied an increase in available storage capacity, reduction of logistics costs, satisfaction of change, and organizational culture.

Abstract:
This article proposes a production method that aims to increase the manufacturing capacity of a footwear small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) to reduce backorders. Therefore, an assessment is carried out and delays in production processes, excess product transport time, defective products, and inefficient work methods are identified. This article proposes designing a Lean manufacturing method using the change management approach, whose methodology is composed of six phases. In phase 0, change management is carried out; in phase 1, the company's current situation is reviewed using the Value Stream Mapping (VSM); in phase 2, the work area is reorganized (implementing SLP and 5S); in phase 3, production is balanced (implementing Line Balancing); in phase 4, continual improvement is established using the Kaizen tool; and finally, in phase 5, the results are evaluated. Through validation, it was possible to confirm that Lean manufacturing tools along with change management increased order deliveries by 82%.

This work makes a generalized revision of the types of production systems within small and microcompanies and refers how they help or diminish the innovation capabilities and generation of tacit knowledge because it is a comparative study of innovativeness processes from a group of Peruvian and Brazilian entrepreneurs. Following this intention; it was used a exploratory and descriptive case research methodology to verify, with entrepreneurs from footwear sector, the alignment of the theory with the practice of learning processes and flexibility inside them. The results present strong linkages vindicating the theory, however, were encountered new axles for discussion from the flexible specialization theme within small and microcompanies. These results also indicate that one of the determinant factors of innovation in these companies is through creation of links with suppliers and deliverers and also through creation of implicit processes of empathy with the customer.

Abstract:
Recent evidence has highlighted that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are more important for EU trade performance than previously thought. They already account for over 80 per cent of exporting enterprises and a third of direct EU exports. Yet, much untapped potential still exists, if trade barriers affecting SMEs could be reduced. The EU–US negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) offer a great opportunity for existing and potential SME exporters to expand their business across the Atlantic. This chapter examines the role of trade agreements in tackling the constraints on SME exports, focusing particularly on the relevance of provisions specific to SMEs. It offers a comprehensive overview of SME-specific provisions in existing EU and US trade agreements. Finally, a number of policy areas are identified where new SME-specific provisions (eg trade facilitation, services, procurement, transparency, etc) could be considered by TTIP negotiators.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses the challenges posed by the implementation of business and human rights standards, especially the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Although SMEs make up between 85 and 99 per cent of global enterprises, they have not been directly involved in the crafting of these standards and this coupled with the traditional focus on transnational enterprises gives a flavour of the formidably challenging context in which the UNGPs are to be implemented. Drawing on lessons from related disciplines such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental sustainability, the chapter explores the implications for human rights of issues such as SME identity, organizational structures, and their place in supply chains. The chapter concludes that the challenges are not overwhelming, especially if the unique characteristics of SMEs such as their flexibility, adaptability, and clear leaderships can be leveraged to achieve the objectives of the business and human rights standards.

Abstract:
AbstractHow do SMEs, competing for global export markets, remain competitive when operating, to a large extent, from Switzerland, one of the world’s most expensive countries? Data compiled annually by the IMD World Competitive Report document that the cost of a single hour of labor in Switzerland is one of the highest in the world, while at the same time productivity per hour is also one of the highest, partially mitigating any cost disadvantage. Ricola, the herbal candy maker, serves as an example of a highly automated production practice that many companies have adopted.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter covers the history of the international market development of the researched firms and in addition how these companies established agent networks, built sales subsidiaries worldwide, or enlisted partnerships, and how they reacted to constantly changing market developments requiring adjustments in their distribution networks. The early founders of Swiss SMEs engaged in extensive travel to promote their companies at a time when the transport infrastructure was still rudimentary. Distributors and agent networks were built and still maintained by smaller companies, at times expanded to include formal distribution partnerships. Subsidiary networks were the preferred choice of larger companies which had greater volumes per country markets. Sometimes, market entry was achieved by building or acquiring manufacturing operations. Cracking some of the most difficult markets, such as Japan, posed special challenges. And finally, when industry conditions changed, even well-planned distribution strategies needed to be changed.

Abstract:
The term “Supply Chain Management” (SCM) denotes the creation, integration, planning and control of all elements of universal added-value chains, from the procurement of raw materials to the final delivery to the customer. IT offer huge potentials for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises to activate effective SCM mechanisms. Even though experts estimate the potential saving that can be achieved through the implementation of effective SCM strategies at 3-5 per cent of turnover, SMEs are experiencing a great deal of difficulty in coping with these strategies. Reasons for this, especially among small enterprises (50 employees and under), are to be found in the specific enterprise culture. The results presented in this paper are the outcome of an EU funded project named “Supply Chain Partnership”, a pilot project aimed at analysing the communication, social and technological obstacles to the implementation of effective SCM strategies in SMEs. The focus of this paper is on the Italian experience, and concerns an industrial district located in Sicily.

Abstract:
Abstract Successfully executing maintenance & reliability improvement programs on a complex pipeline asset network tends to be challenging. Influencing the factors that affect reliability performance usually involves elements of culture, asset management & operations, resource allocation, reliability and maintenance strategy and maintenance execution. Frequently, the focus of attention is placed primarily on tracking detailed reliability & maintenance performance (i.e. tool time, average time between failures, planned work, etc.) because they tend to be easier to understand and measure. When some of the other key factors potentially holding back the full realization of significant reliability improvements may be at the resource allocation level where usually measuring and benchmarking can be more challenging. In this sense, being able to benchmark different operating areas in terms of maintenance, reliability and resources allocation performance can help understand higher level factors driving less than ideal asset reliability performance. Supporting the implementation of a Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) program on a vast liquid pipeline network, multi-attribute decision making (MADM) techniques and concepts were used to create assessment models that based around the notion of complexity were then used to benchmark multiple operating regions. From these assessment models, derived benchmarking indexes such as maintenance technicians per equivalent complexity or maintenance budget per equivalent complexity were created and used in support of resource allocation discussions. The paper will describe the use of a MADM techniques, discuss how different complexity models were developed working in collaboration with multiple maintenance SMEs, discuss some of the analysis and findings of different regional benchmarks and also comment on some of the cultural challenges encountered when using and communicating quantitative benchmarks to influence and drive reliability improvements. Hopefully this paper will help other professionals in the industry understand how SME experience can be captured and transformed into assessment tools for use in benchmarking.

Full text
Abstract:
The levelized costs of delivered energy from the leading technologies for grid-scale energy storage are calculated using a model that considers likely number of cycles per year, application-specific expected lifetime, discount rate, duty cycle, and likely trends in the markets. The expected capital costs of the various options evaluated — pumped hydrostorage, underground pumped hydrostorage (UPHS), hydrogen fuel cells, carbon-lead-acid batteries, advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage (AA-CAES), lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, flywheels, sodium sulfur batteries, ultra capacitors, and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) — are based on recent installation cost data to the extent possible. The marginal value of the delivered stored energy is analyzed using recent grid-energy prices from regions of high wind-energy penetration. Grid-scale energy storage is expected to lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions only in regions where the off-peak energy is very clean. These areas will be characterized by a high level of wind energy with cheap off-peak and peak prices. At the expected price differentials, the only conventional options expected to be commercially viable in most cases are hydro storage, especially via dam up-rating, and UPHS. The market value of energy storage for short periods of time (under a few hours) is expected to be minimal for grid-scale purposes. Only low-cost daily storage is easily justified both from an economic and environmental perspective.

Abstract:
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in Informing Science: the International Journal of an Emerging Transdiscipline (InfoSci)] Aim/Purpose: An important objective of any firm is escalation of its performance and the achievement of competitive advantages. Supply chain agility plays a prominent role to enhance the level of firm’s performance. Moreover, information technology (IT) plays a foundational role in supply chain management practices. Hence, this study proposes the relationship between IT integration as the competency of IT and firm’s market performance both directly and through mediating role of supply chain agility. Background: Many studies have been done to date on the impact of supply chain agility on overall firm’s performance. However, the effect of an agile supply chain on firm’s market performance per se needs to be studied. Furthermore, there is a gap in the literature about the effect of IT competency such as IT integration on firm’s market performance both directly and through mediating role of supply chain agility. Recommendation for Researchers: The first direction this study gives to researchers is to consider the different factors which have significant effect on the agility of supply chain, particularly the IT related ones. The second direction is about the study on the effect of IT competencies and supply chain agility on each category of firm’s performance separately instead of considering it as a one construct. Impact on Society: Although this is a conceptual study, it can highlight the importance of IT competency not only in our daily life, but also in our businesses and industries. Future Research: This study only proposes some relationships based on theory and literature. Future researchers can test these proposed relationships in different contexts and compare the results. Furthermore, this study proposes the relationships for large manufacturing sector in developing countries. The model could be tested for SMEs as well. In addition, the proposed theoretical model in this study might be tested in both developing as well as developed countries to compare the results which will be contributed to the body of knowledge.
