Abstract:

Introduction

Entrepreneurship and SME development play a crucial role in speeding up the economic development of transition economies. Although entrepreneurship exists in all environments it flourishes in the conditions where it is supported. Transition economies, as well as Georgia, are characterized by inefficient framework conditions that present barriers to productive entrepreneurship and SMEs to develop and benefit the economies in their full potential.

Purpose

The Thesis aimed at answering the following research questions:

1)      To what extent the framework conditions necessary for promoting productive entrepreneurship and SME development exist in Georgia?

2)      What are the perceived barriers to entrepreneurship and SME development in Georgia?

3)      In what ways is entrepreneurship and SME development encouraged and supported in Georgia?

Method

The thesis consists of theoretical data such as literature review, secondary data presented by previous studies, and primary data collected by conducting interviews with Georgian entrepreneurs and representatives of governmental bodies and NGOs engaged in improving a business climate in the country.

Conclusions

The study revealed that basic framework conditions for developing entrepreneurship are present in Georgia. Although inefficiencies and institutional gaps give rise to a number of barriers to entrepreneurship and SME development. They are mostly presented by inefficient tax system and financial framework. Despite their efforts towards fostering favourable business environment, GoG, as well as NOGs could do a better job in improving an indirect support in terms of abolishing imperfections in the taxation system, as well as directly providing finance, training and effectual information flow to existing and potential businesses.

Bernhardsson, Jesper. "Sponsoring Entrepreneurship : A qualitative study on the effectiveness of government financing programs in sponsoring SME entrepreneurship in Botswana." Abstract:
The value of entrepreneurship in catalysing economic and social development in developing economies is well-documented. Government SME financing programs in Botswana have helped increase access to capital for entrepreneurs, but high default rates on loans have held down overall performance. By interviewing decision-makers at government agencies providing SME financing programs, a qualitative assessment of the mechanisms used to regulate the screening and monitoring of loan-takers is rendered from an agency theory perspective. It is found that there are methods of raising effectiveness in government financing programs by introducing mechanisms to mitigate the adverse effects of agency costs found in the relationship between lender and borrower. These results provide new areas of research in the study of SME financing programs and help decision-makers recognize some of the available policy options to contribute economic and social improvement.

Abstract:
The increasingly significant role played by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurship in national economies has attracted growing attention. Recent trends have increasingly emphasised the value of knowledge. The challenge within the 21st century is the importance of the productivity of service and knowledgeable workers, as well as strategic flexibility and innovation. It is suggested that high level of innovation, R&D and productivity are positively related. Technology-based SMEs are specifically selected as the object of this thesis since they exhibit most of the characteristics of the three terms, “SMEs”, “innovation” and “entrepreneurship”. SMEs may come across significant constraints because of their own limitations, such as financial constraints, human capital shortages, and weak market power. These constraints are even more serious for technology-based SMEs due to their industrial nature. As a consequence, technology-based SMEs tend to have a higher failure rate than non-tech SMEs and large firms. However, the benefits brought by them cannot be neglected. For example, the return of R&D on a social level is higher than the private level, which highlights the importance of technology-based SMEs for national development. Therefore, it motivates governments to increase support for technology-based SMEs. This thesis aims to examine the effectiveness of government policies on technology-based SMEs and entrepreneurship in Beijing, China. Some researchers have studied and examined the policies, but mainly focussed on the description of policy frameworks and policy dynamics. There is a lack of studies examining the effectiveness of policies from the perspective of entrepreneurs in this context. This thesis fills this gap. This thesis makes both a theoretical and methodological contribution to the entrepreneurship studies literature through the holistic case study approach. A mixed-method approach of document analysis, interview and a questionnaire are used to understand the interaction between policies and technology entrepreneurs. The key findings of this thesis are that policies have strong positive effects on the promotion of entrepreneurship and SMEs. But there are still some negative points when implementing policies, such as uneven filter criteria and supervision system between new and established firms.

Poole, David Leonard. "Entrepreneurship and SME sector development in post-genocide Rwanda : a search for the 'missing middle'." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2016. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/23794/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to gain an understanding of why a new entrepreneurial class and a vibrant small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector have failed to materialise in post-genocide Rwanda. Vision 2020, the government's economic and social development plan, set the goal of transforming Rwanda into a middle-income country by the year 2020. This was to be brought about via the emergence of a new entrepreneurial class and a dynamic SME sector that would deliver economic growth, employment and a stable and secure future for the country's citizens. But despite implementing a comprehensive strategy that conforms to orthodox development theory, the desired SME sector is conspicuous by its absence. The thesis examines the validity of the theoretical arguments that underpin the strategy, the context within which the economic transformation was expected to occur and specific stimulus measures that were taken. Possible explanations for the mismatch between anticipated outcomes and reality were explored via face to face interviews with successful and aspiring entrepreneurs in Rwanda. Analysis of the interviews with successful entrepreneurs revealed a divergence between their characteristics and experiences and orthodox theory. Contrasting these findings with those from the interviews with aspiring entrepreneurs facilitated identification of a sub-set of proto-entrepreneurs, who were a close match to successful entrepreneurs both in the characteristics they displayed and the entrepreneurial journey they intended to take. However, the paucity of proto-entrepreneurs and the anticipated lengthy gestation period that is likely to accompany the development of their enterprises challenge both the common conception that developing economies are populated by a vast number of 'entrepreneurs in waiting' and the assumption that the supply of credit and business skills training will trigger the formation of a dynamic SME sector. The thesis also highlights the unintended consequences of resources being misdirected as well as the risk of leaving behind a large body of well-educated but disillusioned individuals, who anticipated being included in an economic success story, which has not come to pass and generated the sustainable volume of employment that was an explicit objective of Vision 2020.

Uygur, Selcuk. "The influence of religion over work ethic values : the case of Islam and Turkish SME owner-managers." Thesis, Brunel University, 2009. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/4396.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the influence of religion on the work ethic values of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owner-managers in Turkey. The emergence of religious/pious business people in Turkey has been regarded as a phenomenon. This research pays special attention to the religious transformation and secularism in Turkey. It is based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with 32 Turkish SME owner-managers. The sample of the study has been divided into two groups: The practicing Muslim Turkish managers (the religious group), and non/less practicing Muslim Turkish managers (the secular group). Discourse analysis of the qualitative data, first, clarifies where to seek the religious influence on business activities. It indicates that the influence of religion should be sought within individuals‘ conduct/manner of living leading the moral values and the mentalities of the business people, rather than seeking cause and affect relationship. The contemporary Islamic interpretation in Turkey, as it is called Turkish/Anatolian interpretation of Islam, is found to re-shape the existing teachings of the religion and reproduce the religious structure through the practices. In this respect, five distinguishing characteristics emerged as signs of the religious influence behind the pious business people‘s actions: Hard work as an Islamic duty, good will (intention), responsibility, bounty/benevolence and the balance/equilibrium in one‘s life. It is also observed that the new Islamic discourse in Turkey provides moral energy exclusively for the religious business people in terms of influencing and encouraging entrepreneurial activities. Meanwhile, the study demonstrates that the work ethic values of the religious Turkish SME owner-managers have been evolving to be more rational and professional, especially after the 1980s liberal economy. This transformation has been evaluated within the concept of secularisation.

Alami, Tarik, and Cécile Montier. "The use of corporate entrepreneurship by Gefeba Elektro GmbH : The case study of a German medium-sized company in the highly competitive process automation sector." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-98108.

Full text
Abstract:
Corporate entrepreneurship has gained renewed interested in research since global markets are evolving and industries become more and more competitive. Information is transferred across the globe rapidly so that products and processes can be copied quickly. In order to be competitive, companies need to enhance creativity, their technological knowledge and market know-how. This high competitiveness leads to a dilemma where innovation is a key to survive whilst the size and administration may signify barriers to replicate entrepreneurial behavior through the entire business.   Considering the relevance of corporate entrepreneurship in the rapidly changing market of the 21st century, our purpose was to develop a deeper understanding of how corporate entrepreneurship can be used by companies. We then looked deeper into the subject of organizational transformation and decided to do a case study. The aim of the research was to make a theoretical contribution by examining the subject in the context of a medium-sized enterprise in a specific environment where corporate entrepreneurship is vital. Therefore, we chose a medium-sized German company that operates in the increasingly complex and competitive process automation industry. The Gefeba Elektro GmbH was found to be an interesting case for a case study for several reasons. The company was situated in a highly competitive market, in the heart of the industrial ‘Rurhgebiet’, with numerous competitors. However, and despite the lack of resources faced by this SME, Gefeba is an important actor in the automation industry.   Although researchers have examined various factors that promote corporate entrepreneurship, the literature has focused on defining factors in isolation without linking them to architectural factors, especially when it comes to SMEs. These factors are defined in our study as leadership, culture, structure and strategy. Acting within the extremes of small businesses and large corporations, we focus our study on a single medium-sized company that enables us to reach different levels of the organization and grasp a holistic understanding of this specific organization in relation to its use of CE. In accordance to this, the main research question is: How does Gefeba Elektro GmbH use corporate entrepreneurship in the automation sector industry?   The study was conducted using a qualitative research method. One of the major findings is that the Gefeba Elektro GmbH is using a balance between the organizational antecedents of common values and flexibility to build a mechanism that aligns the organizational architecture towards the development of corporate entrepreneurship. Another aspect is the fact that every architectural factor is used for the development of CE, even if some architectural factors such as leadership and culture seem to have more importance in this development. Thereby, the findings about organizational antecedents and architectural factors are relevant for the managerial implications in others SMEs facing the same context as Gefeba Elektro GmbH, which are willing to implement corporate entrepreneurship without knowing exactly how to do it. Indeed, the lack of resources of an SME could however allow developing organizational transformation through a sensitive equilibrium between the common values and beliefs for the control and the flexibility for the innovation. Moreover, another point highlighted in our findings is the crucial role of the individual in the implementation and development of corporate entrepreneurship.

Osemi, Ebierede. "Exploring the Acquisition of Information on Entrepreneurial Knowledge of Women: Niger Delta." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7175.

Full text
Abstract:
Forty percent of women in the Niger Delta states in Nigeria were unemployed in 2015. Guided by acquired needs theory, this multiple case study was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of how women in the Niger Delta states can acquire the requisite entrepreneurial knowledge to make decisions about becoming self-employed. Twenty women entrepreneurs in the Niger Delta states who had knowledge and experience of entrepreneurship were selected to participate in providing data through a semistructured interview, field notes, and document review. Through Yin's 5-step data analysis process, member checking, and triangulation, the following key themes emerged: creativity and innovation, promoting learning and development on entrepreneurship, developing a business mindset, information technology, financial and economic literacy, mentoring the mentees, financial freedom, flexibility of time, adequate control, lack of adequate entrepreneurial training, unsupportive business environment, educational barriers, and shortage of funds and resources. The study findings may create awareness of how women entrepreneurs in the Niger Delta states can obtain knowledge and experience of entrepreneurship. This awareness may promote positive social change by supporting efforts to prepare women for employment, thereby reducing unemployment, improving the standard of living, and reducing poverty among women in Nigeria.

Abstract:
How can small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) compete over time within international networks? This thesis takes a stance in that business network relationships are essential for international SMEs as such networks can provide knowledge and learning opportunities. International network competitiveness is, in this thesis, introduced as a concept that captures SMEs long term performance, resulting from the firms being competitive within international business networks. This thesis thereafter proposes that an analytical framework of International network competitiveness, can promote the study of SMEs' long term performance within international networks. The thesis subsequently acknowledges that SMEs frequently need to develop a combination of technical- and foregin market knowledge so as to stay competitive within international networks. In fact, technical knowledge development is central for an increasingly wider selection of firms, not only high tech firms. By investigating the function of co-innovation (innovation together with network partners), for the proposed components of international network competitiveness, the thesis demonstrate that innovation has intriguing and central functions for the international network competitiveness of SMEs.

Abstract:
We have all read about the rapid development of today’s business landscape as well as the increase in globalization. Companies are forced to operate in new ways in order to stay competitive. At the same time, globalization has opened up new business opportunities for companies. This has lead to the emergence of born global companies, which carry out rapid internationalization processes from an early stage, and challenge traditional internationalization models such as the Uppsala model. According to existing literature, there are several challenges with adopting a born global strategy, and international entrepreneurship orientation becomes an important aspect in order to succeed. Finding a balance between innovativeness, risk-taking, and proactiveness is the key in order for born global companies to succeed in their internationalization process. This study investigates how international entrepreneurship orientation affects the internationalization process of born global companies in Sweden. I have, with the help of a qualitative study, looked into how Swedish SME born global companies in the ear-and headphone industry have managed to take on several international markets in their internationalization process and in what way international entrepreneurship orientation in combination with other factors have played a crucial role.

MacDonald, Harry Douglas. "Knowledge management processes in growth-oriented SMEs : an Atlantic Canadian perspective." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/2327.

Full text
Abstract:
Competitive pressure and desire for success drive enterprises in general to involve in knowledge acquisition and dissemination activities that are becoming increasingly significant in the rapid changing and globalising economic world. In addition, with the increased mobility of information and the global labour force, knowledge and experience can be transferred instantaneously around the globe; thus, any advantage gained by one company can be eliminated by comparative improvements overnight. Therefore, the only comparative advantage a particular company will face will be its process of innovation – combining market and technology know-how with the resourceful talents of knowledgeable labour to solve a constant stream of competitive problems- and its ability to derive value from information. In this context, internal and external knowledge acquisition, intra-firm knowledge dissemination and management decisions taken in response to the significant information generated and subsequently filtered became the key factors of entrepreneurial success. This thesis explores how market orientation, learning orientation and entrepreneurial orientation systematically contribute to and are sources of competitive advantage in growth-oriented SMEs. The objective of this study was to investigate the likelihood of a growth-oriented enterprise established in Atlantic Canada to be involved in knowledge acquisition and dissemination activities and to succeed conditional on numerous internal and external factors. A ‘mixed-methods’ research approach was used in this study, comprised of: 1) a web-based questionnaire to study the knowledge management process and other aspects of entrepreneurial success and 2) ‘semi-structured’ interviews with a sample of the responding entrepreneurs. The findings suggest that knowledge management practices: external acquisition, intra-firm dissemination and responsiveness, do vary across the levels of entrepreneurial performance among the Atlantic Canadian SMEs investigated in the study. Having a market orientation and investing in human resources of the firm were found to be critical drivers of innovation leading to potential competitive advantage.

Abstract:
Background: Small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) are major contributors to wealth, economy as well as society. In today’s uncertain times, the challenge for SMEs’ top managerslies in choosing the right strategic approach to generate a competitive advantage and wealth. Research Problem: Due to the ambiguous business context, the strategic approach of SMEs isof high importance to ensure a flexible, growth, and value-generating approach. Top managersare exposed to the difficulty of applying a strategy, which ensures performance and enables thecreation of newness. The concept of strategic entrepreneurship consists of advantage-seekingand opportunity-seeking and aims to ensure wealth creation. This is done by combining thesetwo dimensions to ensure strategic renewal within established organizations. Until now, especially in SMES, the concept of strategic entrepreneurship has not been studied substantialenough from a top managers perspective. We consider the field decisive to analyze, ensuring astrategic approach for top managers in SMEs to help manifest the competitive advantage intoday’s ambiguous business context. Research Purpose: To explore how top managers are managing the two dimensions, namelythe performance (advantage-seeking) and the entrepreneurial (opportunity-seeking) dimension,of strategic entrepreneurship in SMEs.Research Questions: (1) How do top managers engage in strategic entrepreneurship in SMEs?(2) How do top managers manage the relationship between advantage-seeking and opportunityseekingin SMEs? (3) How does the SME context impact top managers in managing SE? Method: Ontology: Relativism - Epistemology: Social constructionism - Research approach:Qualitative study - Methodology: Study based on exploratory qualitative interviews - Datacollection: In-depth interviews - Sampling: Purposive sampling with 10 SME top managers and2 SME consultants - Data Analysis: Content analysis with tree-diagram Conclusion: This study contributes by demonstrating the cognitive as well as the contextuallevel top managers are utilizing to engage in strategic entrepreneurship in the performanceorientedSME context. Moreover, our contributions are associated with various managerialsupport actions. To demonstrate these, we developed a model which outlines top managers’cognitive-oriented engagement towards the advantage-seeking and opportunity-seekingdimension of SE in SMEs. Managerial Implications: We present three managerial implications for top managers who areactive in SE as well as for aspiring top managers and SME owners. The practicalrecommendations can support top managers’ engagement in strategic entrepreneurship from anindividual as well as an organizational perspective.

Abstract:
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face numerous challenges to stay competitive in the international marketplace. They have to align their business models to suit the needs and wants of customers in different markets. They also have to counter the competition of larger, more affluent firms. To meet these challenges, firms must continually create new business solutions. Whereas larger firms may tap into extensive internal knowledge bases for business creation, SMEs often have to reach outside themselves for creative input. This thesis contends that international entrepreneurship can be fostered in constellations of firms and individuals; in some instances, it may even be more accurate to talk about entrepreneurial networks than about entrepreneurial firms. The bedrock assumption of this thesis is that entrepreneurial opportunities are virtually ingrained in the network structure. Relationships across national borders provide multiple avenues for knowledge to intersect, thus creating new business solutions. It is argued that the internationalization of SMEs can unfold as an ongoing pursuit of entrepreneurial opportunities that emerge in everchanging networks. The findings suggest that network knowledge combination can be addressed as a capability that strongly shapes SMEs’ competitiveness in foreign markets.

Rose, Benita. "The impact of micro-enterprise training on SME development – A case study from rural Dominican Republic." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6801.

Full text
Abstract:
Masters in Public Administration - MPA
In the Dominican Republic (DR) the development of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in rural areas is of great importance because SMEs generate employment and increase local capacity in areas with the highest poverty rates in the country. Ultimately, SME development can contribute to poverty alleviation especially in rural areas. Micro-enterprise training as a form of capacity development initiatives aim at effective empowerment of entrepreneurs and prospective entrepreneurs, which allow them to build capacities to develop their business. These capacities will enhance their ability to ensure sustainability of decisions that influence their quality of life. So far, very little research has been conducted on the precise effects and overall effectiveness of SME-related training in the Dominican Republic. Against this background, it is of great benefit to evaluate impacts of micro-enterprise training initiatives on the development of SMEs in rural DR, in order to find out which factors stimulate the creation and growth of enterprises and which factors hinder their development. This allows effective adjustments of future support initiatives in the development sector and it contributes to the existing empirical evidence base in this field. This study applies Human Capital Theory and the Theory of Planned Behaviour as theoretical frameworks to analyze impacts of micro-enterprise training on SME development. Secondary data for this study was drawn from the Dominican tourism-project La Ruta del Cacao, applying a mixed-method approach for the data collection. Quantitative research methods in the form of a semi-structured questionnaire helped to quantify the impacts of provided micro-enterprise training. Qualitative methods in the form of Focus Group Discussions allowed an in-depth analysis of training impacts on respondents, with the aim of identifying influencing factors, especially those which the theoretical framework may not have covered. The theoretical discussion of this study identified that entrepreneurial intentions are mediated by the attitude toward entrepreneurship, perceived subjective norms and perceived behavioural control. The empirical results show that the provided training is likely to have slightly improved the participants attitude towards enterprise creation. Perceived subjective norms have not decreased due to the training and appear not to have played a role in the participants decision to start or not start a business. The participants perceived behavioural control is not likely to have increased due to the training. On the other hand, results indicate that the training provided participants with useful entrepreneurship-related skills and knowledge. Overall, the participants entrepreneurial intentions slightly improved as a result of the training. However, the impact of these outputs on SME development was rather modest. Identified external factors which influenced the participants entrepreneurial behaviour were a lack of capital, job loss, having a family to take care of, being part of an entrepreneurial family and the existence of an entrepreneurial role model. Intrinsic characteristics were identified as the most influential in demonstrating successful entrepreneurial behaviour and SME creation. The findings of this research contribute firstly to the existing evidence base of micro-enterprise training impacts in rural Dominican Republic. In addition, the findings contribute to the literature base on applications of both Human Capital Theory and the Theory of Planned Behaviour in the field of entrepreneurship education.

Abstract:
The debate about the survival of the environment is spread throughout society today. Already in 1987, the UN had a major impact with the Brundtland Report, which defines sustainable development (Frostenson & Helin, 2018). For companies to take responsibility and create sustainable business, integration of economic, ecological and social aspects into an organization's short and long-term planning is required (Dyllick & Hockerts, 2002). This study focuses on the ecological aspect because development and growth must take place on environmental conditions (UN, 2012). Small and medium-sized companies, SMEs, which are the second boundary of this study, currently account for about 70% of global pollution (Hillary, 2017). How SMEs should be able to create a sustainable business is difficult as the tools available for ecological sustainability management are difficult to implement directly from large companies (Johnson & Schaltegger, 2016), as SMEs are fundamentally different (Jenkins, 2009; Kechiche & Soparnot, 2012). The study examines how SMEs design their ecological sustainability management and how they relate to sustainable entrepreneurship. How SMEs overcome the internal and external barriers defined in previous studies (Johnson & Schaltegger, 2016), will also be investigated. The research questions were investigated in a case study in a medium-sized manufacturing company. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted with managers and internal control documents and external reports were also investigated. The results indicate that SMEs design their ecological sustainability management based on the working model described in the ISO 14001 standard (International Standards Organization [ISO], 2015). The environmental policy lays the foundation for all continued work and describes the commitments that are made. The process continues with analyzes that lead to environmental goals and an action plan with responsibilities and time frames. Key performance indicators are used for monitoring and regular audits are performed by external auditors. The case study also indicates that the most prominent barrier in SMEs implementation of sustainability management tools is the lack of competence. It is overcome by employing expertise from consultants. The surveyed company has ecological sustainability as a competitive strategy, which means that they see business opportunities in solving sustainability problems and thus relate to sustainable entrepreneurship (Shepherd & Patzelt, 2011). By effectuation and causation, causation is the dominant logic in decision-making processes when companies are primarily based on goal management.

Abstract:
For as long as internationalization has been a research topic, the risks surrounding it has been discussed. Several theories have emerged concerning how to go about international business, which entry modes and strategies to use as well as which markets to enter and at which pace - everything in order to reduce the risks of business failure. The lack of institutional and economic stability in emerging markets has evolved into warning signs for foreign firms as they are hesitant to enter these markets due to higher risks and furthermore, there are assumptions regarding low entrepreneurial skills in these markets, much due to the stability-barrier. In this regard, Thailand presents an interesting case, especially when aiming to look into females as entrepreneurs. The country presents a large number of females involved in business activities that show no sign of being hindered by the stability factor.  These interesting aspects paved the way for this thesis’ purpose “to examine and understand how Thailand's female entrepreneurs engage in international business activities.” Through examining the internationalization process from an aspect of both personal traits and network connections, findings have been presented regarding how the Thai female entrepreneur uses these components to initiate international business activities for her small- and medium-sized enterprise. These findings have enriched the understanding of how females approach and experience an internationalization process. To ensure a broader comprehension of the subject, this research has followed a qualitative research method combined with an abductive approach which this thesis has benefitted from as there is a lack of research on the subject. The theoretical framework starts with presenting the phenomena entrepreneurship, and then more in-depth explains concepts of female- and international entrepreneurship, introducing concepts like internationalization and psychic distance. Finally, the theoretical framework is concluded with a conceptual framework model explaining how all concepts are connected. Before presenting the empirical findings of the research, the methodology chapter explains how the researchers went about this study, how all the data was collected and under which circumstances. In order to tie the empirical findings with the theoretical framework, an analysis was made which presents this thesis’ findings in a theoretical manner before everything is tied together in a conclusion. The findings conclude that there is a significant bond between personal traits, networks, and firm internationalization and furthermore, this thesis suggests that Thai female entrepreneurs are fearless and therefore, encounter few of the barriers that other female entrepreneurs do. Finally, this thesis is concluded with theoretical and practical implications as well as suggestions for future research within the area.  “It is obvious that they are notafraid of what this might do.”

Abstract:
/*** Abstract - The fundamental objective of this dissertation consists in discussing and understanding the referentials of strategie decision that consubstantiate the possibility of SME being able to develop the marketing function without the need for its integration, resorting for that purpose to outsourcing. With this goal in mind, a literature review took place on the subjects of entrepreneurship, outsourcing and management and marketing in the SME, and a mail survey was conducted with several SME in the Lisbon region. The conclusions of this work reveal that these companies already partially resort to outsourcing for marketing related activities, and that the outsourcing of the marketing function may constitute an important tool in the growth and development of SME, by resolving their structural gaps, in terms of know-how and in the ability to implement marketing initiatives. It should also be noted that a third of the companies that answered the questionnaire expressed their interest in a marketing function management service through an outsourcing regime.

Abstract:
Jamaica's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have a high failure rate. In 2016, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) recorded Jamaica's SME start-up rate at 4.06% and the discontinuance rate at 9%. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive multiple case study was to explore the strategies some Jamaican SME owners used to achieve business sustainability in the manufacturing sector for longer than 5 years of operation. The conceptual framework used was the entrepreneurship theory, which provided insights into business sustainability. A purposive sample of 5 owners of SMEs who had achieved business sustainability in the manufacturing sector for longer than 5 years of operation were the participants in this study. Semistructured interviews of participants and review of company documents produced in-depth insights into the strategies they used to achieve business sustainability. Coding keywords, sentences, and ideas from the interviews and company documents and categorizing them was the approach taken for data analysis, using methodological triangulation. The themes from the study were entrepreneurial characteristics, competitive advantages, resource management, customer relationship management, quality management, and marketing. Implications for social change include the potential to provide strategies that support SMEs' business sustainability and lead to greater job creation and ultimately the Jamaican government's ability to fund social projects.

Over the last few year, Portugal has been experiencing some serious economic difficulties. Despite the signs of an economic recovery, these signs are still accompanied by a moderate growth. When it comes to construction, there has been a significant growth. This sector is strongly influenced by tourism and its increase, especially in terms of rehabilitation and new housing construction. Recent data show that in 2017 construction and public work´s investment grew up considerably and consequently this contributes to a substantial economic growth. Despite the positive aspects mentioned above, it´s necessary to carefully consider before deciding to start a business. It's precisely this exercise that this master thesis aims to do: analyze the feasibility of developing an enterprise for the sale of micropiles. Nevertheless, after a rigorous analysis of all financial and economic indicators, this final Master´s project concludes that this business is viable. In 2019 this will represent a Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 33,76%. When it comes to Net Present Value (NET) the investor´s perspective represents 126.984€. However, it´s important to notice that, though there´s an improvement within the construction sector, it requires a careful analysis and evaluation, because this is a very volatile branch.

Abstract:
The business environment has been changing as it becomes easier to interact acrossboundaries with globalisation. One of the key elements of globalisation is the culturaldiversity resulting from the cross-cultural and ethnic interactions between individuals. This constant growing globalisation challenges small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) to interact with different cultural backgrounds in their foreign markets and withtheir local staff. This cultural diversity can bring both positive and negative outcomes toSMEs depending on how they approach these challenges. The purpose of our research is to discover the contribution of cultural diversity in theinternationalisation process of a Swedish SME, named CodeMill and to understand howthis contribution is ensured by this particular SME. Our research focuses on two specificcriteria of cultural diversity, which are expressed as (1) the individual's internationalexperience as an employee and (2) the SME's social network abroad. Our studyprovides them with practical contributions presented in a final framework, whichexplains how to take advantage of cultural diversity to enhance the positive outcomes ofit and strengthen their internationalisation process.A qualitative case study was conducted with CodeMill, a locally based InformationTechnology (IT). They fulfilled the principal requirements in terms of employees andyearly turnover in order to be categorised as an SME. Conducting seven semi -structured interviews in total, with people from different hierarchical levels and spheresenabled us to gain insights on how matters relating to cultural diversity are handled inCodeMill. Secondary Data served to confirm information we received from theinterviews and functioned as an additional source of information. The study proposes a framework that has been revised from the analysis of ourempirical findings. This framework is positioned within the field of Cultural DiversityManagement in an internationalisation context. The gathered findings implicate that thelevel of informational diversity, which needs to be used with a high synergy level, determines the importance of the contribution of cultural diversity. This can be ensuredvia three key elements: leadership, research & measurement, and follow-up. Thecompany’s Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO), especially included the three investigateddimensions of innovativeness, proactiveness and risk-taking proved to be applied inCodeMill. They were considered to have a positive influence on the internationalisationprocess of the company. CodeMill enhances its internationalisation process thanks to sixcompetitive advantages ensuing from its level of cultural diversity. However its socialnetwork hinders the opportunities to enter new markets. We found proof that CodeMillbenefits strongly from connections at an organisational level (e.g. partner companies, international customers); whilst an individual’s international experience, gathered fromliving abroad or just having personal international contacts, did not significantlycontribute to the firm’s internationalisation.

Abstract:
Internationalization of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the healthcare industryhas experienced rapid growth in the recent decade. Although research on understanding thisprocess and what drives it has been conducted, previous studies are limited in recognizing thefull influence of both domestic and foreign institutional environments. This study investigatesthe internationalization of four Swedish SMEs operating in healthcare markets through aninstitutional-based perspective, asking how and why SMEs internationalize and how theymanage different institutional environments. By analyzing the empirical case findings in thelight of a theoretical framework based on internationalization theory, institutional theory andinstitutional entrepreneurship we attempt to answer our research questions mentioned above. The thesis concludes that internationalizing SMEs experience a large range of barriers ofwhich most can be effectively overcome by cooperation and access to networks with keyopinion leaders. Findings on managing the institutional environment pointed to that thedomestic institutional environment can act as a driver for internationalization, while theability to influence and change foreign institutional environments were found to be nearimpossible for a single firm. However, our study shows that attempts at institutional changecan be achieved through cooperation together with other firms, organizations and mostimportantly influential networks with key opinion leaders. Internationalizing SMEs within thehealthcare industry might not be institutional entrepreneurs in its true sense; however theyhave the possibility of getting there.

Abstract:
This work deals with the logic of action enabling Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to integrate the SMEs. Today’s society is evolving because of increasing social inequalities and the growing need for the reduction of negative influences of human activity on natural environment. At the heart of these social problems, there are the corporations, which are more and more obliged to integrate sustainable development matters in the way they operate. Since the SMEs represent a consequent part of the economic fabric, it is essential for them to appropriate CSR and assimilate it in their operating methods. However, SMEs operate in a particular way, notably because they are limited in terms of resource and because they have a strong proximity with their stakeholders, which they have to sustain. Nonetheless, just like big corporations, they want to improve performance through strategic choices. In that respect, we question ourselves on how CSR is integrated in SMEs through the implementation of sustainable practices as well as the induced performance. Literature gives two logic of action enabling the integration of CSR in corporations: sustainable entrepreneurial logic and sustainable managerial logic. Research in SMEs presents the sustainable entrepreneurial logic as a preferred method for the inclusion of these matters. Starting from these first elements, we elaborate a conceptual model that allows us to evaluate the importance of entrepreneurial initiative and sustainable entrepreneurial logic in the implementation of sustainable activity in the SME. This model also aims at clarifying the stakeholders’ role in the CSR procedure in SMEs as well as the impact on performance. Before we test this model, starting from an exploratory qualitative study and literature, we develop a measurement indicator of sustainable entrepreneurial logic. The conceptual model is then tested through the structural equation on a sample of 402 French SMEs. This data was gathered thanks to a questionnaire survey. We then highlight the importance of sustainable entrepreneurial logic in the implementation of CSR in SMEs, as a way of seizing opportunities, innovating or creating social and economic value. However, the study doesn’t show any of the positive effects that CSR has on performance, nor the influence of stakeholders on this relation

Thesis, Montpellier 1, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010MON10045/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to verify the origin of the general belief that few young businesses survive beyond their start-up period. We attempt to verify this idea on the basis of a database which had lead this research to more precise questions about the primary explanation of the three-year survival of young firms in different sectors. The analysis of the literature reveals a rich body on survival and more generally on successful young businesses. As we show in the literature review, many works have been developed on these themes, and a large number of points of view have been found andexposed, without reaching any agreement as well as in Entrepreneurship research as in other research areas such as strategic management or organizational theory. Developments and debates show the great diversity of work that was undertaken in the world on this theme and have highlighted the lack of quantitative work on this theme especially in France. The aim of this work has evolved in an attempt to obtain a relatively clear sight-seeing of the notion of survival for three years in different sectors, on the French territory. Our attempt to clarify the key factors for survival remains mixed mainly because of the great diversity of results obtained for each sector. The intersectoral focus shows that despite the heterogeneity of previous results, as highlighted contradictions, it seems believable that these results are exclusive to sectors and times at which they were measured. It also seems natural to think that the key factors for survival of newly founded firms are fluctuating throughout the years, and reinforcing the complexity of the analysis of this topic in entrepreneurship research. It appears that only works undertaken at a global level (Like the GEM) as well as more precise researches with qualitative approaches are quite necessary to understand thoroughly the phenomenon of survival of young firms. However, it seems in addition that this diversity could contribute to a more global explanation of these issues, given example the GEM in Europe, which appears necessary to get a more accurate and complete vision of survival of newly founded firms

Small business creation is a vital factor to any economy, but there is little research done on the challenges faced during intermediate stages in the life of a business that may prevent the success of an organization. The goal of this investigation is to determine what controllable factors inhibit growth within an organization, and how to minimize these barriers in order to reach success. The research focus is on small businesses in operation for more than four years, since this is the period in which support from governmental and private institutions becomes scarce and the organization is forced tomake decisions; not only to survive, but to promote evolution for the firm. This thesis has been written on commission for SME consultation firm BCM-QMS.

Abstract:
AND PRÍNCIPE: PROFILE, PROBLEMS ANDA CHALLEN - Abstract: Small and medium-sized companies usually have a rapid capacity to adapt to changes in the economic scenario and, for this reason, they can constitute an important pillar for economic sustainability, mainly in developing countries, where markets are normally dominated by informality. New companies leading to investments and the diversification of the economy, job creation and improvement of the population's income and well-being. For São Tomé and Príncipe, the business scenario is plagued by several uncertainties: the dependence on international financial aid, government instability; unattractive policies that encourage employment and productive capacity, etc. It is therefore urgent that companies and entrepreneurs are open to the global economy and its successive adaptations. In this sense, the present work aimed to study and identify the profile, problems and challenges of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), particularly in the current pandemic situation by Covid-19. The methodology adopted to achieve the defined objectives, includes two stages of information collection. The first stage comprised a broad literature review, involving the theoretical component and empirical studies, in order to better understand the situation of SMEs. In a second step, a collection of primary data was outlined, through the application of a questionnaire to the representatives of SMEs located in the STP. The results of the research allow us to identify and defining SMEs, recognizing their main problems, the challenges faced, the essential factors of success or failure, the opportunities that the country presents and how SMEs can contribute to the economic development of STP, as well as suggest clues for future work.

Abstract:
During the past decade, entrepreneurship and its implications in a developing country context has gained increased attention in research. In Uganda, women in businesss are leading the way in the entrepreneurial development. In addition, the internationalization of small entrepreneurial firms has lately been given more attention within international business research. The purpose of this thesis is to combine these two emerging phenomena within international business in order to investigate how the female entrepreneur's means at hand influence the internationalization initiation of her small and medium-sized enterprise in Uganda. By investigating the subjects in the matter, important components of the entrepreneur's means has been examined. To ensure a deeper understanding, a qualitative research has been followed. This thesis derives from an abductive approach. Due to the lack of previous research on the subject, it benefitted from a combination of inductive empirical research combined with theoretical insights. The literature review takes off from the concept of entrepreneurship and thereafter explores the concept of opportunity, means and internationalization. A conceptual framework concludes the literature review by illustrating the relations between the concepts. The conceptual framwork provided themes for collecting and was used to analyze the empirical data gathered in Uganda by adopting a multi-case approach. The analysis discusses theoretical concepts and empirical findings in contrast and relation to each other, structured by the conceptual framework. This is followed by a concluding chapter stating implications, limitations and suggestions for further research. The outcome of this study has provided a deeper understanding of who the entrepreneur is, what she knows and how she uses her networks and personal ties to go abroad. The findings have resulted in the main theoretical implication of filling the research gap of female entrepreneurship in developing countries as well as providing an example of how the effectual approach can be used when studying entrepreneurship witin international business. We suggest that entrepreneurs and their SMEs benefit from engaging in business networks at an early stage of the internationalization process. Within networks, effectual means are working together to develop market knowledge and find opportunity for international activities.

In recent years, the advent of digital technologies has radically transformed the business world and societies paradigms. The current transformations are particularly disruptive with regard to the new reality of digital connected global trade. However, traditional theories and models on internationalization of firms do not specifically address the pervasive effects of digital technologies. The purpose of the paper-based dissertation is to study the internationalization and digitalization of firms and to contribute to the knowledge on achieving entrepreneurial and competitive international activities in a digital context. By investigating entrepreneurial behaviors of firms and individuals, the research project suggests to link the dimensions of interest through an overall conceptual process that demonstrates how the use of digital technologies impact entrepreneurial behaviors and how this might shape new opportunities to enhance the propensity for internationalization

Abstract:
The concept of entrepreneurial alertness introduced by Kirzner (1973) plays a critical role in the process of business opportunities detection. Since the work conducted by the Austrian school, this concept has been widely developed and has raised numerous questions by researchers. The cognitive approach has pointed to some answers by refining the concept. Inspired by the initial work of Kirzner (1973, 1989) and those conducted by the cognitive approach, Tang et al. (2012) proposed a more inclusive definition. These authors modeled and operationalized entrepreneurial alertness by three dimensions: alert scanning and search, alert association and connection and evaluation and judgment. The issue of potential antecedents of entrepreneurial alertness remained unresolved (Valliere, 2013). In response to the comments of Valliere (2013) and the entrepreneurial health field’s needs for knowledge and statistics, we proposed to study the effects of sleep on this process. To this end, the theory of attention allowed to make the links between the fields of entrepreneurship and sleep. To meet the problematic, a positivist posture associated with a hypothetical-deductive approach was adopted. Thirteen research hypotheses were proposed from the conceptual model was built. To validate this model, a cross sectional quantitative study of two months was conducted among SME owners/directors. At the end of this survey, we collected 238 questionnaires. These were analyzed by the structural equation method based on Partial Least Squares (PLS). The results highlight the importance of sleep in maintaining cognitive, attentional and entrepreneurial abilities for SME owners/directors

Appiah, Kenneth. "International competitiveness of SMEs : a case of Ghanaian non-traditional horticultural exporters." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/621888.

Abstract:
Intense competition in the international markets has made the determinants of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) competitiveness an important asset in the export business, making of policies, strategies and decision making by businesses. SMEs are often seen to be disadvantaged for a variety of reasons, including inappropriate internal structures, lack of capabilities, insufficient resource support and apparent lack of foreign-market knowledge. The nature of international markets and the disadvantages SMEs face, make it imperative to examine the determinants of SME international competitiveness. Although some literature has recorded some studies on internationalisation of SMEs in developed economies, there is insufficient study of SME internationalisation, particularly in the context of non-traditional horticultural SME exporters in developing economies. Hence, the study aims to evaluate the determinants of non-traditional horticultural exporters’ international competitiveness by addressing the question: To what extent are non-traditional horticultural exporters in Ghana competitive in the international market? In the context of this study nontraditional horticultural exports exclude cocoa beans, logs and lumber. The study enriches the literature on internationalisation of SME exporters in developing economies by providing guidance for future research in a field of SME international business. The theoretical foundations of the study draw mostly on three perspectives: the resource based view, international entrepreneurship and institutional theory. From the review of literature, a conceptual framework was developed: ME international competitiveness is conceptualised in this research as government support factors, entrepreneurial factors and a firm’s internal factors. At the empirical level, the study employed qualitative and quantitative approaches which involved surveying 105 non-traditional horticultural exporters (respondents) in Ghana. Six hypotheses were tested on the key issues in this project, which were statistically analysed, employing logit regression, Pearson correlation and chi square. Secondly, the study uses six export facilitating institutions which were interviewed to gain understanding of the services these institutions offer to non-traditional horticultural SME exporters in Ghana. The main findings suggest that Ghana government support policies, access to finance, Technological Innovation, number of years in business, the size of the firm, Entrepreneurial Factors and the number of exporting destinations of the nontraditional horticultural SME exporters have had positive impact on the competitiveness of horticultural SME exporters in international markets. The findings also contribute, to some extent, to the advancement of the empirical, theoretical and managerial understanding of SME international competitiveness in developing economies. The research contributes to the international business literature by providing a model for understanding the determinants of horticultural SMEs’ international competitiveness. This highlights the important role of government, the entrepreneurial orientation, and a firm’s internal factors in realising SME competitiveness. The research also provides guidance for policy makers and SME business facilitators in implementing export-led programmes for horticultural exporting firms in Ghana.

Abstract:

This study empirically investigates the levels of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and market orientation (MO), and their links to performance within the context of French Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

SMEs represent today the heart of the European strategy and account fro 99% of the total companies in France. The current study argues that SMEs and especially French ones deserve a particular attention.

Besides, even though many studies have been conducted in the fields of entrepreneurial orientation and market orientation, when combining both, only a few included performance in their empirical analyses. Moreover, most relied on large established companies or MNE. Little concern has been put in SME and none have been done on the case of French SMEs. The current study propose a cross-sectional analysis to investigate the combination of EO and MO and its impact on performance through a quantitative research method.

Based on existing theories and previous studies, three hypotheses have been formulated :

H1 : Companies that are entrepreneurial oriented outperform companies that are not.

H2 : Companies that are market oriented outperform companies that are not.

H3 : Companies that are both entrepreneurial and market oriented outperform companies that are either one or none.

In order to test those hypotheses, a online 24 questions survey has been administrated to a sample of 338 French SMEs. All questions were based on the works of Covin and Slevin (1989), Narver and Slater (1990), Lumpkin and Dess (1996), and Blois and Carson (2000).

The results show that all hypothesis are verified. However, if no correlation was found between EO and MO, the combination of both enables SMEs to achieve higher performance.

Abstract:
This research aims to better understand the phenomen of creativity in an entrepreneurial situation. It proposes a new theory to explain the phenomenon of entrepreneurial creativity. Exploratory research has been conducted with entrepreneurial from non-microenterprise SMEs located in metropolitan and overseas France. This work is part of an interpretative approach of the Grounded Theory (Glaser and Strauss, 1967). Based on interviews and non-participant observations, we analyzed entrepreneurial situations faced by SME entrepreneurs. The approach stemming from the Sociology of Translation (Callon and Latour, 1981) allows us to conduct reasoned interpretation of these entrepreneurial situations. The result make possible to identify the constituents of entrepreneurial creativity as a knoledge-building phenomenon distinct from innovation. The objet of which is located in a, more or less open, specific creativity space in which human actors, non-human actors and hybrids are related. Our theory makes it possible to identify the nature and the function of the object of creativity, as well as the modalities which characterize the actors in relations and the creativity space. The level of openness of the latter predetermines the reflection and action of the entrepreneur and this it one of the managerial applications proposed in this research

Abstract:
South Africa the development of small tourism businesses are extremely vital for job creation and a development of a new economy. The South African tourism industry has to look at more innovative ways for marketing their products and services to develop the small tourism businesses. The arrival of web 2.0 led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services and web applications such as social networking sites. Social networking sites have encouraged new ways to communicate and share information on the web. When it comes to online networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social networking sites and function as online communities on the internet. Social networking sites are currently one of the applications of Web 4.0 developments. This means creation by the majority and web participation a necessity. The importance of customer engagement enablement is recognised. Operating systems are in cloud-computing. The communication medium became social media systems and people sell everything via desktop, mobile, tablets and iTV. This study focuses on the Eastern Free State tourism destination and its development through social networks. The main aim of the study is to critically analyse the application and effective utilisation of social network site technologies within the Eastern Free State tourism industry and to explore this objective of social network applications used within the small businesses in Eastern Free State tourism industry. The empirical study was conducted by means of a field study using a structured questionnaire and interviews with key stakeholders. Data from 60 small tourism businesses were collected and a total of 55 businesses restricted to Eastern Free State Drakensberg were analysed in the process of collecting the peer-aided questionnaires. The biggest problems in the use of digital media are knowledge to develop a proper product that has measured marketing outcomes for the small business.

This thesis is devoted to the study of entrepreneurial support in a perspective of innovation. It implements an empirical research through the combination of both qualitative and quantitative approaches, allowing to explore the contribution of the entrepreneurial support from a perspective of innovation.A theoretical analysis of main concepts in the field of innovation and entrepreneurial support, allows to highlight a conceptual framework adapted to study the SMS’s entrepreneurial support in order to innovate. This research aims to study the entrepreneurial support practices which may have an impact on the success of the leader for the creation of an innovative project phase. To do this, we have adopted a process that combines two complementary approaches. A qualitative study, which aimed to explore the forms and practices of support mobilized in a process of identification and exploitation of entrepreneurial opportunities, as well as the personal perceptions of successful leaders. The quantitative study was conducted among two hundred leaders installed in the Lorraine region, including the Regional Actions device for the New Development Activities (ARDAN). Among our key findings, human capital determines the success of innovative projects, but does not fully explain. Our research has also demonstrated that social capital is a practical support to improve the chances of developing innovative projects

Abstract:
After the collapse of the Soviet Union the former member states have started the transformation process. The transformation process from planned to market economy includes not only the adaptation of the economy to the new market rules but also the profound social and political transformation. For this reason such processes present huge challenges to affected societies. The transformational recession in Georgia was significantly enhanced by the civil war and by ethnic conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. During the ethnic conflicts and civil war the business and technical infrastructure were damaged and most of them were completely destroyed. Poverty and political instability were predominated. The trade relations with the member countries of Council of Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) were aborted. Moreover, the conflict in South Ossetia hampered the power supply from Russia and a conflict in Abkhazia, the production and trade with tea and citruses, which were major trade commodities at that time. In the beginning of 90-ies, Georgian government with the assistance of international organizations, such as International Monetary Fund and World Bank started to elaborate political and economical reforms. The reforms included several aspects, such as the transfer of public assets to private through privatization, the liberalization of domestic market and trade and the creation of market-oriented institutions. Because of lack in implementation neither economical nor political transformation has been achieved. For instance, by the begin of market oriented reforms the awareness of policy makers about the importance of entrepreneurship, in particular small and medium ones for the economy was low. The absence of previous experience prevented the elaboration of appropriate policy instruments and methods for the development of competitive market economy. The stimulation of private sector has been generally neglected. This had a severe affect on political, social and economical problems, which still hampers the development of middle class in Georgia. The presented research indicates that productive entrepreneurship is a driving force of an economy. The entrepreneurial activities on the one hand facilitate the resource allocation and on the other through the development of new products and services urge the competition. Furthermore, they contribute to technological improvements through innovation, create jobs and thus boost the economic and social development of a particular region or country. However, it is important that the legal and institutional framework is appropriately settled. Unlike mature market economies, Georgia is not characterized by well-developed sector of small and medium sized businesses. Most existing SMEs are operating in local markets and predominantly in the shadow economy. It is also noteworthy that small business in Georgia belongs to so called “mom and pop” rather than to innovative, growth oriented businesses. They are mostly engaged in trade and craft. In addition of poor performance, the business activity of SMEs is very centralized. The vast majority of them are operating in the capital Tbilisi. The poor performance of small and medium businesses in Georgia and their negligence by the market forces is among others due to the armed conflicts and state failure. As in the beginning of transformation process, down to the present day, the state fails to provide necessary conditions, such as rule of law, the protection of property rights and competition, transparent and uncorrupted public administration. The result is the weak middle class. The weak middle class by itself has a negative impact on economic development and democratization process in Georgia.

Abstract:
There are few technological cases involving Mozambique in the literature. This study attempted to fill that gap. Do Mozambican technology companies adopt the same positioning, in comparison to those adopted in other countries with different characteristics (social, economic, political and cultural), for example Portugal? A case study about a company’s necessity to adapt its positioning, taking into account the internal and external context was created – the case of the Quatenus platform. On the other hand, since 2010, due to the economic crisis, Portugal has fought against youth unemployment by promoting an entrepreneurship mind-set. This in turn has created thousands of start-ups. Only 10% of these, however, export therefore the government has created a strategy to increase these numbers. It is important to identify the factors that influence these companies to achieve internationalization success (including Mozambique). What factors need to be taken into account in order for companies to succeed in NTBF (New technology-based firms) internationalization? To answer this question this study includes four case studies, one of them being the above mentioned Quatenus platform case, as well as 39 questionnaires filled in by business persons from different Portuguese technological companies. This study contributes also with the author’s auto-ethnographic perspective, who worked in Mozambique for around two years. Additionally, the study contributes to a discussion about Portuguese technology companies that often depend on internationalization to succeed. We confirm the data within the existing literature, highlighting the following NTBF’s internationalization factors: networking, qualified human resources, management capabilities, efficient knowledge creation, proactivity, business localization and the ability to adjust the structure to the constantly evolving external context

Abstract:
Despite significant research output in recent decades on international new ventures (INVs),little attention has been paid to understanding the processes and conditions under whichthe entrepreneur identifies and exploits an opportunity and subsequently creates valuewithin the firm. As a result, the dynamics involved in the role of the entrepreneur during theestablishment and internationalization of INVs remain in a black box. In order to understandthe context, interaction among players and other dynamics involved before, during, and afterthe establishment of the INV’s creation and development, a different approach is needed. Theaim of this dissertation is to describe and understand the role of entrepreneurs in the processof establishment and internationalization of international new ventures. Three longitudinal case studies were conducted between 1999 and 2008 with a total of 108interviews using snowball sampling. In addition, comprehensive secondary data have beencollected to enrich the empirical cases with thick descriptions, and to enhance content validityas well as the reliability of the research. This study offers a more nuanced picture of how entrepreneurs’ characteristics influencethe international development of their firms. For example, it appears that it was neitherthe previous foreign experience, the education, nor the previously developed internationalnetwork (as suggested by previous literature) that can be credited for the rapid and vastinternationalization of the case firms. Instead, it is suggested that an entrepreneur’schildhood and prior life story directly influences their behaviour in the INV. We proposethat different types of entrepreneurs are important factors to understanding firms’ differentinternationalization patterns. Depending on the backgrounds of the entrepreneurs, theydeveloped preferences, skills, and especially desires that would come to affect the totalbehaviour of their future organizations. This study also develops the notion of psychicdistance into three separate spaces - the physical, the mental and the social space. Forexample, the context and experience during childhood creates the foundations for theentrepreneurs’ mental and social space, which can separately, but also in relation toeach other, offer a more accurate and deeper understanding of the actions taken by theentrepreneurs in the INV. Furthermore, this study has shown that the role and characteristicsof the entrepreneur do change over time, which also determines the individual’s sensitivity toopportunities and the international behaviour of the company.

Abstract:
In the last decade, entrepreneurship has been seen as a solution to social inequality and environmental degradation rather than a possible cause. This fact called academics' attention to develop a connection between traditional entrepreneurship, society, and the environment. They established a new type of entrepreneurial activity called sustainable entrepreneurship (SE). The (SE) basis is to preserve nature, sustain life, and the community is searching for perceived opportunities to create future products, processes, and services. According to the literature, SE is an emerging research trend that can be defined as the realisation of sustainable innovations aimed at the mass market and benefit most society. Therefore, (SE) makes a significant contribution to the transition to a sustainable economy. There are indications that a shift towards sustainable business strategies in which economic profit is essentially linked to social and ecological value is essential. For these reasons, the (SE) has received increasing importance from different actors, such as international institutions, companies and universities. A clear example was the development of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, approved in 2015 by the United Nations (UN), which provides a framework for collaboration at a global level to implement (SE) initiatives. This type of entrepreneur starts a business to serve both their interests and those of the community, addressing unmet social and environmental needs. Therefore, this phenomenon can be seen as a unique perspective that combines economic, social and environmental value with a general concern for the well-being of future generations. In this way, (SE) differs from conventional entrepreneurship in aspects related to the creation of value, highlighting among them the search for the following three aspects (1) economic value, (2) social value and (3) environmental value. Three academic contributions have been proposed to achieve the established aims, which constitute the relevant chapters of this doctoral thesis. This research is presented as a compendium of three contributions, each focused on achieving specific proposed aims under different methodological strategies. In the first contribution, an in-depth analysis was carried out using bibliometric techniques and instruments that made it possible to map the central (SE) academic literature and analyse the most substantial contributions to research in this field. The chronological analysis of the literature in the Web of Science-Social Sciences Citation Index (WoS-SSCI) database-up to January 2018- provides new knowledge, such as the most influential journals, authors and articles so far. This research reviews one of the most recognised databases, the Web of Science-Social Sciences Citation Index, having a chronological distribution of the publications that allows a systematic review of the scientific literature in the timeline. The study also shows the most outstanding journals and papers in the field. The largest number of articles published in (SE) are published in top journals such as the Journal of Cleaner Production, Sustainability, Business Strategy and the Environment Journal of Business Venturing. The second contribution is to analyse the influence that SMEs' sustainability competencies have on their social entrepreneurial orientation and the influence of this strategy on the company's performance (social and economic). This research focuses on measuring how the leader's sustainable competencies influence the social entrepreneurial orientation of SMEs and their outcomes. It is observed that the key competencies that leaders must form or develop in order for SMEs to have a social entrepreneurial orientation are focused on environmental and social practices based on four dimensions: System and thinking competence, normative competence, interpersonal competence and action competence. The third contribution is to find out whether small and medium enterprises in this country are involved in the adoption of sustainable practices and see whether there are significant differences in adoption according to size, sector, and age. Through an exploratory-descriptive study, the research made it possible to analyse the sustainability practices that SMEs in Ecuador include in their business management. Among the most important findings is that managers have an extremely positive and favourable attitude towards sustainability. Practices in economic sustainability have a medium-high implementation level. The main strengths are related to SMEs' social image and human rights; SMEs analysed show concern that their supplier enterprises should also act responsibly to convey the image of a responsible and reliable company. Finally, Ecuador's sustainability is quite relevant at the Government, the University and the Enterprises, which seek to involve, raise awareness. Support enterprises to manage their SMEs in a socially responsible way and become mobilisers of a more just and equitable society. For this reason, this research focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises in Ecuador which face immense sustainability problems and challenges. There is a clear need to build and monitor public policies that are based on evidence, such as indicators designed to monitor environmental dynamics and their interrelationships with social and productive dynamics.

Abstract:
SMEs represent 90% of emerging economies. They are dual, both engine for the world economy and vulnerable because of their excessive indebtedness and the weight of informal activities. We think private equity can enhance and spread this economic traction that only qualifies emerging countries. Thus, our question appears as: “Which model for emerging markets private equity?”. We select an inductive approach to address constraints of a limited research literature and a difficult access to data. Through the theoretical Timmons’ model, we perform a longitudinal clinical study of a private equity fund in Egypt, during its inception from 2008 to 2011. We design from our research an entrepreneurial private equity model, dedicated to emerging markets and inspired by venture capital

Abstract:
This thesis is interested in the entrepreneur’s personal network in the context of Vietnam, a country engaged in a market economy under the leadership of the Communist Party. On the managerial level, the production of knowledge on the network will make it possible to discard the bad reputation of the term of “personal relation” and to develop a better interpersonal and inter-organizational connection for Vietnamese entrepreneurs. These, nuclei of an emerging dynamic private sector, are still dispersed in an individual functioning. On the academic level, the thesis exploits an expanded view towards the social nature of the entrepreneur’s economic activity. The four case studies specify the role of social groups in the entrepreneur network and their transformation into stakeholders. The thesis focuses finally on the reading of the results in the light of different theories in entrepreneurship

Caldwell, Donna Marie. "Female entrepreneurship : investigating peripheral tourism SMEs in NI, ROI and NZ." Thesis, Ulster University, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.692820.

Abstract:
This thesis explores female entrepreneurship within peripheral tourism SMEs in NI, ROI and NZ. The research specifically focuses on the characteristics of the female entrepreneur, their motivating factors, barriers encountered and coping mechanisms employed. Female entrepreneurship is a relatively recent research phenomenon, and is regarded as one of the most significant, yet quietest, revolutions of our time. Female-owned tourism SMEs have the potential to contribute social and economic outcomes to peripheral communities in which they are located by offering sustainable solutions to economic and social challenges in terms of providing employment and service; purchasing goods and services from local suppliers and trades at community level; attracting inward investment from those persons seeking a lifestyle change; and adding value to the community as a whole. As a single industry study, the tourism industry has been deliberately selected as an illustrative context for this research due to the low degree of entrepreneurial behaviour that it has traditionally exhibited. Theoretically, underpinning this study is a combination of both traditional teleological (RBV jKBV) entrepreneurial approaches, and emerging pragmatic models of entrepreneurship (effectuation and bricolage). This research appreciates the importance of counterbalancing relationships between 'traditional' and 'emerging' theories. Methodologically, a three-phase, multi-stage and multi-method approach is adopted. An initial exploratory qualitative stage consisted of formulating an online database and shallow case instrument (Phase One). Qualitative exploration is conducted through email/telephone followup constructs utilising the shallow case instrument (Phase Two). Further explanations of pertinent themes are provided through in-depth interviews (Phase Three). Through confirmation, disconfirmation and extension of knowledge, the research makes a number of pertinent theoretical contributions to the areas of RBV/KBV, effectuation, bricolage, female entrepreneurship and to the context of peripheral tourism SMEs. A number of practical recommendations are forwarded for the interest of key stakeholders (Le. government and SME providers). Future studies may consider extending their scope to include other regions and employ a longitudinal approach in their research.

Abstract:

The failure rates of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in developing countries have been very high, with many of them closing down within the first five years of operation. The research method was qualitative. The research design was a descriptive case study design assisted in the exploration of the influence of leadership on SMEs survival in Lagos, Nigeria. The multiple cases involved 20 SMEs in Lagos, Nigeria with a purposive sample of 20 participants. The exploration of the influence of leadership on SMEs survival involved in-depth semi-structured interviews, direct observations, and artifacts for data triangulation. The data collection and analysis provided findings that revealed leadership practices for replication regarding SMEs survival. Data analysis included the use of NVivo 10® software resulting in four major themes and 24 sub themes. Four major themes were: (a) leadership experience perspective on SMEs survival, (b) leadership practices perspective on SMEs survival, (c) business practices perspective on SMEs survival, and (d) sustainable practices perspective on SMEs survival. Five of the 24 sub themes were: (a) listen to learn, (b) performance, (c) recognition,(d), skills renewal, and (e) value-driven. The recommendation for SME owners/managers and leaders in the private, public, and academic sectors is to embrace leadership styles and leadership development practices that will assist in SMEs survival. The diverse perspectives from males and female leaders provided multiple data sources achieving triangulation. The study revealed that SME owners/managers should have leadership experiences, demonstrate leadership practices, develop and employ business practices, and sustainable leadership practices.
