Abstract:
<p>Small-medium scale enterprises enterprises (SME) found in developing and developed countries is still facing classical handicap such as technology, finance, managerial and market accessibility, in spite of its high flexibiliry, responsiveness, dynamic and resistance. Therefore, designing and management of SME in context of technology dissemination needs to understand business dimension as enterprise description, product/service, market, enterprise location, competition, management, personnel, budget, research and development. Beside general technology, both SME in general and specific are closely related to: (1) Technology choice covering technology complexities, capital intensity, and human resource (HR) quality; (2) Technology learning strategy based on learned technology position combination, both process and products with faced competition, through existing learned technology, technology integration, technology development and basic research; (3) Enterprise unit covering enterprise scale, HR, organization,<br />location, product type, enterprise unit, experiences, competition level and business network; (4) Performance indication of business unit and business man, and technology diffusion institutions; (5) Linkages of business with characteristics of authority, functional, normative and diffusion. Dissemination pattern of integrated and sustainable technology is expected to establish network among development subjects intensively and dynamically, to compile agenda of transfer technology, implement technology that is appropriate and develop learning organization for technology dissemination activities.</p>

Abstract:
Tax is recently getting the most important income source for the country. In the case of Indonesia, every year the government has increased the annual target of tax income, but it has not been easily and successfully to achieve. In 2013 the government wishes to target the sources of income tax deriving from that small and medium business scale. The research which focuses on the medium scale of corporate tax payer business, would like to see and evaluate implementation of Government Regulation number 46, year 2013 (PP 46/2013), by doing simulation and regression analysis. Those corporate tax payers with the annual sales of around Rp. 7,000,000,000,- seems to be facing a dilemma situation to whether or not to comply with. Particularly since this government regulation does not take into consideration the impact to the tax payers cash flow when financial trouble is being faced and even at the time the companies run in loss situation. It seems it has been the time for the government to review the effectiveness of this regulation, how is being implemented across the country, especially by those corporate tax payers who are preparing book keeping and submitting tax report. The issue of accuracy, accountability and financial engineering follows the implementation of creativity accounting and tax accounting treatment, should have been the concern of the tax office. The idea and advices of mandatory audited financial report is prominent in this research, in order to reach the more targeted collecting tax fund from this class of enterprises in Indonesia.

Abstract:
In this study, we aim at investigating factors significantly affecting innovation behavior of SMEs in developing country context. To realize the research objective, a thorough literature view on SME innovativeness has been realized and initial model for the study has been constructed. Data collected by self-administered questionnaire from SME CEOs and high level managers of Uzbekistan and China sample SMEs has been analyzed by Multivariate Logistic Model to make inference about significant determinants of SME innovativeness. The findings of the study suggest that CEOs with higher education, their innovation goal-oriented determination, and competition pressure from home market and abroad due to high export orientation of the SME and government incentives for innovations are being main forces making SMEs realize innovations. Internally, innovative SMEs are being led by CEOs with higher education degree and who well fits the great importance of innovations in their company strategy.

I discuss experiences in the development of four broadband public networking projects in New York State in order to see an implication for future small or medium-sized enterprise over such public networks. The projects were funded under a state program to diffuse broadband/advanced telecommunication technologies in economically depressed areas of the state. Through the broadband networks, I critically argue characterization of next generation public network (NGPN) in reference to small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). I identify several facets of an NGPN drawing on a longitudinal study of the network development in four New York communities. As broadband public networks diffuse, small businesses being left out of the loop. The idea of SME application and service may itself be at risk. My approach to the socio-technical challenges involved in the design and development of broadband public networks is outlined.

Abstract:
The small and medium enterprise (SME) companies optimize performance using different automated systems to highlight the operations concerns. However, lack of efficient visualization in reporting results in slow feedbacks, difficulties in extracting root cause, and minimal corrective actions. To complicate matters, the data heterogeneity has intensely increased, and it is produced in a fast manner making it unmanageable if the traditional methods of analytics are applied. Hence, we propose the use of a dashboard that can summarize the operational events using real-time data based on the data visualization approach. This proposed solution summarizes the raw data, which allows the user to make informed decisions that can give a positive impact on business performance. An interactive intelligent dashboard for SME (iid-SME) is developed to tackle issues such as measurement of cases completed, the duration of time needed to solve a case, the individual performance of handling cases and other tasks as a proof of concept. From the result, the implementation of the iid-SME approach simplifies the conveyance of the message and helps the SME personnel to make decisions. With the positive feedback obtained, it is envisaged that such a solution can be further employed for SME improvement for better profit and decision making.

Abstract:
Innovation is paramount to the survival and growth of any business. It has changed the way companies conduct business and the way both customers and clients acquire goods and services. The textile industry was one of the key sub-sectors targeted under the country’s strategy for economic recovery (Republic of Kenya, 2003). This study probed the influence of technological, product and process innovations on growth of garment manufacturing industries in Nakuru. Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling techniques were employed in deriving the study sample. Data was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics with the aid of Statistical Packages for Social Scientist (SPSS 20). This study was able to establish a strong link between innovation and growth of businesses and recommends that the Kenyan government should establish close links with SMEs in the garment manufacturing industries to encourage innovative strategies that will enable the sector to expand.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between firm size, resources, capabilities and involvement in public procurement. While the liability of smallness has been a recurring theme in research into public sector suppliers, there remains a dearth of evidence and theorising on the effects of size. Design/methodology/approach A model linking firm size, resources, capabilities, tendering activity and performance is devised. Resource-based view theory informs the model. Survey data from over 3,000 firms active in the Irish public sector marketplace is used to test the model. Findings As hypothesised, firm size is positively associated with tendering resources and capabilities. Resources and capabilities, in turn, influence tendering activity and performance. Specifically, resources act as enablers for the number and value of contracts firms tender for while capabilities are important for winning contracts. The author also finds similarities between medium and large enterprises in their ability to tender. Research limitations/implications The treatment of tendering resources and capabilities is not exhaustive. Future research could include additional indicators of resources (e.g. external consultants, IT) and capabilities (e.g. production, process innovation). Practical implications Managers of micro and small suppliers should focus on augmenting their tendering capabilities as they lag bigger suppliers. Legislators need to re-assess current “one-size-fits-all” small and medium enterprise (SME) friendly policy as it is not sensitive to intra-SME differences. Originality/value This study introduces an important qualification into understanding of public sector suppliers by demonstrating that SME disadvantage is less black and white than shades of grey.

Abstract:
There are different attitudes towards small business definition. Basically, the laws of the countries are based on the criteria on the basis of which this or that enterprise belongs to the small business sector. However, in EU countries, small and medium enterprises are considered as small businesses and they are considered in one context. The concept of small and medium business combines number of employees, annual turnover and annual balance. The official definition of small and medium enterprises in Georgia is partially in line with EU standards. The concepts of small business and micro business are established only in terms of tax policy, while in institutional and quantitative or qualitative terms its definition is not officially definite.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to investigate the moderating effects of innovation capabilities and social media capabilities on the relationship between brand orientation and brand performance among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Drawing on the size differential feature from the organizational ecology theory, the paper further tests variations in these conditions across disaggregated SME levels. Design/methodology/approach The empirical part of the study was carried out with a sample of 484 enterprises in an emerging market context via exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, along with a moderated hierarchical regression. Findings Results from the moderated hierarchical regression analysis indicate that although the two capabilities generally offered positive moderating effects across all enterprises, these are conditional and not invariant when disaggregated based on enterprise sizes (small vs medium). Originality/value The study suggests the need for enterprise owners/managers to identify optimal combinations of enterprise capabilities, based on their sizes, for which their complementarities with brand orientation efforts are more potent.

Abstract:
The impact of clusterization on the development of SME sector has been analysed in this study. The cooperation of companies at national level and on a global scale is becoming more and more important as a tool of economic development. Companies tend to work together in order to share their competencies, reduce various costs, consolidate limited resources, and hereby increase their productivity, innovativeness, and profitability. It must be emphasized that the role of clusterization is crucial in the development of SME sector, as small and medium‐sized enterprises may benefit from economies of scale and extend the operation limits (size‐related limitations of operation are characteristic of most small businesses). Clusters (and similar forms of interorganizational structures) create the environment for innovation and technological advancement. Therefore, small and medium‐sized enterprises may gain additional benefits that include know‐how, cost‐saving options, innovative solutions, etc. The authors of this scientific study have concluded that the competitiveness of SME sector is closely related to the spread and extent of clusterization processes.

According to Chung and law (2003); Jeong et al (2003); Jeong and Lambert (2001) and Kim et al. (2003), information satisfaction is the most important requirement of online customers' purchases decision making. This need remains largely unmet despite the growing importance of e-commerce within the hospitality industry. According to Kim et al. (2005), the changing trend in the business activities is largely attributable to the fast and improved developments in information and telecommunications. As a result, Chung and Law, (2003) noted that the Internet is also helping to drive down overhead costs for the hospitality industry and cost of information for the customers, as the traditional method of communication is slowly being phased out. Similarly Kim et al (2005) argue that the Internet gives the customers more advantages by allowing them to obtain valuable information such as prices and hotel facilities without the need of getting into contact with any sales agents. In addition, the Internet provides the customers with numerous supplies allowing customers to access a pool of products and services information from which they can make choices and compare prices.

Abstract For a SME (small and medium-size enterprise) to operate competitively in an international and local market, it is necessary for it to deal with its tasks in an efficient and practical way; this can be achieved by the systematic analysis of the undertaken tasks in relation to the company’s organizational and economical ability for their completion. The author suggests in this paper that the assessment of such an implementation depends on a firm's intention to use the ERP system to achieve strategic goals. The author discusses the issue of the Balance Scorecard method being used to assess the impact of an ERP system implementation on the performance of a small service enterprise. Using a research results, the author illustrates the possibility to assess the implementation of an ERP system in the small enterprises.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test the effect of brand regulations on the relationship between enterprises’ branding capabilities (internal and external) and performance. It also examines the hypothesized relationship effects across manufacturing and service-based enterprises. Design/methodology/approach The study uses data from 384 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within an emerging market setting. Moderated hierarchical regression was used to examine the theoretical interrelationships between branding capabilities and enterprise performance within the boundaries of regulations. Findings Results from the study suggest that both internal and external branding capabilities positively affect enterprise performance. However, the effect is confounded as brand regulations attenuate the relationship between enterprises’ branding capabilities and performance. Varying outcomes across manufacturing and service-based enterprises are also assessed. Originality/value The study suggests that policy makers should review regulations on businesses, particularly those relating to the small business sector. Regulations that ameliorate activities of SMEs should be implemented to promote existing enterprises, and attract new ones for industrialization in emerging markets. The findings provide evidence for issues of potential research and managerial interest, with implications for both policy makers, small business owners and the academic community.

This study analyzes incentive contracts in public procurement supply chains using a game-theoretic approach. Specifically, we compare a structure in which the host company is a large enterprise and the partner company is a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) to a structure in which the host is an SME and the partner is a large enterprise. For each structure, we examine whether an incentive contract improves supply chain performance and confirm that the performance improvement effect is greater when the host company is an SME. Our analysis has several policy implications. SMEs are less likely to be selected as host companies for large-scale procurement projects, limiting their growth opportunities. Thus, to enable SMEs’ sustainable growth through large-scale procurement projects, the governments can allocate a portion of public procurement to SMEs. The introduction of incentive contracts elicits sustainable cooperation from large companies when an SME is the host company in a public procurement supply chain.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper's purpose is to identify and accentuate the dilemma faced by small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who use mobile devices as part of their mobility business strategy. While large enterprises have the resources to implement emerging security recommendations for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, SMEs often lack the IT resources and capabilities needed. The SME mobile device business dilemma is to invest in more expensive maximum security technologies, invest in less expensive minimum security technologies with increased risk, or postpone the business mobility strategy in order to protect enterprise and customer data and information. This paper investigates mobile device security and the implications of security recommendations for SMEs. Design/methodology/approach – This conceptual paper reviews mobile device security research, identifies increased security risks, and recommends security practices for SMEs. Findings – This paper identifies emerging mobile device security risks and provides a set of minimum mobile device security recommendations practical for SMEs. However, SMEs would still have increased security risks versus large enterprises who can implement maximum mobile device security recommendations. SMEs are faced with a dilemma: embrace the mobility business strategy and adopt and invest in the necessary security technology, implement minimum precautions with increased risk, or give up their mobility business strategy. Practical implications – This paper develops a practical list of minimum mobile device security recommendations for SMEs. It also increases the awareness of potential security risks for SMEs from mobile devices. Originality/value – This paper expands previous research investigating SME adoption of computers, broadband internet-based services, and Wi-Fi by adding mobile devices. It describes the SME competitive advantages from adopting mobile devices for enterprise business mobility, while accentuating the increased business risks and implications for SMEs.

Manufacturing enterprises today are forced to face radical challenges in the disruptive concepts of Smart Manufacturing (SM) and Industry 4.0 to stay competitive. Most Multinational Enterprise (MNEs) have initiated their journey towards adopting SM. As a mainspring of many manufacturing economies, Small and Medium-Enterprise (SMEs) are still struggling to understand the complexity offered in SM, and many of them are not ready to embrace the concept of SM. To overcome this, SMEs first need to assess their readiness and maturity before embarking on an SM journey. The existing available readiness assessment model seems to be suitable for MNEs, and there is still a lack of tailored models that suit SMEs. This paper sought to pinpoint the conceptual framework from the review of the existing readiness-maturity assessment and identify the gap of existing model as well as proposed a tailored model framework that are suitable for SMEs. Ultimately, this model will be used to pursue a comprehensive scholarly study across Malaysia. The proposed model is enhanced with 4M attributes as the dimension and embedded with the characteristic of Industry 4.0 build component to help the SME’s overcome the possible uncertainties in adopting SM concept.

Abstract:
Like manufacturing companies that have flowshop production lines, SME facing the amount of flow time and makespan. Unfulfilled production targets, buildup on some machines that result in other machines being idle, increasing waiting times across multiple machines, and poor performance of workers are a series of problems facing SME. This article uses a discrete system simulation method to analyze and evaluate SME production lines to improve performance. Simulation is an appropriate tool used when experiments are needed in order to find the best response from system components. From the results of modeling and simulation done found the root of the problem is due to accumulation that occurs in one machine and the lack of utility of the operator in producing bags. So do the experimental design with 3 scenarios on the system that have been modeled and obtained some solutions that can be offered to solve the problem. Furthermore, after the alternative selection is obtained the best scenario based on the alternative selection test is the scenario3 by adding 2 new machines and 1 new operator on the production line obtained a significant output increase compared to other scenarios of approximately 30%. While the best scenario based on the minimum cost is the scenario2 by adding 2 new operators obtained output that is not much different than the scenario3. However, it has not been able to solve a series of problems facing SME. Therefore, the results of this study to solve a series of problems faced by SME is to add facilities in the production line of 2 new machines and 1 operator (scenario3).

The subject of the article is the issue of separating micro, small and medium enterprises (SME) from the general economy which due to their small size encounter market barriers hindering their development. The basic legal instruments in this matter is the definition of the SME sector at the level of the EU regulations. The purpose of the analysis is to look for advantages and disadvantages of the existing definition, as well as to refer to the selected ideas of its modification, considering European Union case law. The main research hypothesis is: regarding the importance of SME’s definition for the EU economy, the changes that must be made in the analysed concept must take into account the existing economic conditions as well as the previously available use of the same definition by the institutions. However, it is equally important to identify the purpose for which the SMEs were separated under a specific definition. The purpose of this separation was to provide support for such SMEs, which they de facto need. The basic research method used in the article is the dogmatic and legal method. Its subject was the analysis of the content of normative acts, the EU case law, as well as reports and analyses in the field of the SME sector.

Abstract:
The SME Assist concept was formulated in August 2009 in line with the philosophy of university-industry engagement. Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are important economic driving force in many countries. Previous researches show that efforts taken by various parties and governments of different countries have helped improve and transform SMEs to be competitive in the fast changing global economy. In Indonesia specifically in Bogor regency, West Java, there are different models or approaches adopted and implemented by various parties. However, competitiveness of SME remains an area of concern. For Handycrafts-based SME, in order to meet these expectations and fulfil their contributions to the development process, it is absolutely important that they have high productivity. It is essential that these industries provide productive and remunerative employment and, for their survival and growth, offer products and services at competitive quality and price. The Handycrafts-based SME has a potential to develop in Bogor Regency which is located in tourism area and divided into Villages (Cilember, Leuwimalang, Cisarua, Cibeireum, Kopo and Jogjogan) in Cisarua District. Handycrafts is the dominant cluster that can generate earning sources and give role of economics which is very significant. Unfortunately, the existence of the Handycrafts-based SME is not as good as most people expected, because there are many constraints faced. In the mean time, the infrastructure and access information concerning capital, technology, management and marketing are limited. Therefore, it is essential to formulate strategy to develop handycrafts-based SME based on internal and external factors. The objectives of this research are to identify the characteristics of handycrafts-based SME in Bogor Regency to have actual conditions, and to analyze the SME’s internal-external environment and to select the alternative strategies for development . The development strategies of handycrafts-based SME are proposed according to external and internal factors. These factors influence and determine the development dynamic and growth of handycrafts-based SME. The combination of strength and weaknesses together with external situation will determine the development posibility of SME. The score analysis method was used to analyze the internal external environment used for generating strategy using analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Hierarcy decisions was based on interpretation of secondary data concerning external and internal factors which influence the growth of SME and early discussion with experts from the SME entrepeneurs, academics, and local government. The prioritation of alternatives strategy was determined synchronization of literature and opinion of expert responder, then the result was processed with AHP. The results of this research show that the characteristics of handycrafts-based SME in Bogor Regency are: using traditional management, simple record-keeping administration, having local market and regional sale, utilize local or regional raw material, perform continous production system, having good quality awareness, using self or family capital resource, utilize simple equipments and technology and also having good innovation capability. According to the score assessment of AHP, the main strategy for the development of handycrafts-based SME in Bogor Regency is give more or better attention for policy formulation and based on socialpreneurship. This strategy means that the government policy should enhance or at least not constraining the development of handycrafts-based SME. The policy should also accommodate the necessity of all stakeholders related to handycrafts-based SME

Abstract:
Introduction. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) face with many obstacles in the process of joining the global value chains. They include small scale of businesses (large corporations require bigger volumes of raw materials), relatively higher production costs, information vacuum, scarce resources for innovations, limited access to finance, weak institutional support, and, in general, the poor ability to compete with large firms in research and entry into global markets. Purpose. The article aims to reveal the opportunities and barriers for small and medium-sized businesses in Ukraine in the value creation global chain. Results. Significant prospects for Ukrainian SME in value creation global chains are opening up in the field of green investments (production of environmentally friendly products or energy efficient appliances etc.). However, there is a serious risk to business in value chains: the end-producer puts suppliers in a strict framework, where the supplier actually loses the functions of an independent enterprise, and becomes the “sub-unit” of a large corporation. The role of the state in developing export potential of SME to integrate them in global value-added chains is crucial, namely, informing about the possibilities of participation in global chains, the preferential financing of SME as participants of chains, protection of intellectual property and tax incentives for innovative enterprises, subsidies for product standardization. Ukraine should join the international standards of value added reporting by type of enterprises.

Abstract:
Small and medium enterprises (henceforth, SMEs) play a key role in economic growth and industrial development of a country. They make vital contributions in improving economic and social sectors of a country through stimulating large scale employment, investment, development of indigenous skill and technology, promotion of entrepreneurship and innovativeness, enhancing exports, and also building an industrial base at different scales. SMEs worldwide have been benefited from the combined interactions of forces of product mix, location factors, and market advantages. However, evidences also suggest that there are cases of SME failures. Growth of SMEs is constrained by many factors. Many SMEs occasionally go on growing into large firms. This paper looks for identifying such constraints of manufacture based SME Development in Bangladesh. From the study, it has been identified that, lack of utility facilities, for example, electricity, gas and water, frequent changes of the prices of raw materials as well as shortage of raw materials, political unrest, high interest rate on borrowings, high transportation cost, lack of financing for ongoing concern, and inadequate infrastructure are the major constraints of manufacture based SMEs Development in Bangladesh. The researchers assume that few initiatives like developing necessary infrastructure, ensuring utility services, reducing bank rate and ensuring consistent supply of raw materials can change the total scenario and thus can help the manufacturing sector which in turn will result the industrial development of the country and thus will be able to contribute to the economic development.

Abstract:
Abstract The informal sector of Ghana has been growing amidst the recent economic development in this country. The study investigated the drivers of informal sector participation by SMEs in Ghana and made use of a Chi-square statistical methodology to analyze the drivers of SME participation in the informal sector of Ghana. Analyses from the study showed that gender can be deemed as a driver for SME participation in the informal sector of Ghana. Gender was significant at 0.012 with registration of business enterprise and 0.055 with tax obligation of respondents. The educational level of SME operators had an impact on registration and tax obligation and therefore can be deemed as a driver of SME participation in the informal sector of Ghana. However, the level of education was insignificant to registration and tax obligation but had a strong correlation to these variables. The study also showed that women are more likely to participate in the informal sector of Ghana as compared to men and also that there is a high tendency of not paying tax among SME operators in the informal sector of Ghana. A very low educational level among SME participants was recorded with over 60% of the respondents not having any formal education. Based on the findings of the study, a country-wide research can be done to ascertain the socio-economic determinants of informal sector participation in Ghana. Also, the study highly recommends policies that can harness the usefulness of informal sector.

Abstract The article presents identification of problems during the implementation of Lean concept in small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland. Although the Lean methodology is recognized all over the world as one of the best and most effective ways to improve the functioning of enterprises, in Polish conditions exist serious problems with its implementation. Development of small and medium-sized enterprises is regarded as one of the measures of economic growth and a sign of healthy competition. The needs of the economy and the limited resources characterizing this enterprise sector imply the need to adjust its capacities to the requirements of the turbulent environment. In the analysis of problems there were used the results of questionnaire surveys conducted among representatives of the companies participating in the largest Lean conference in Central Europe.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to draw on the organizational ecology theory to examine variations in branding efforts and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across enterprises sizes and business operating sectors. Design/methodology/approach A four-stage analysis involving principal component analysis, Pearson correlation, ANOVA and logistic regressions was used on a sample of 430 SMEs within an emerging market. Findings Principal component analysis identified four brand marketing efforts relevant to the SMEs. These efforts were used in fluctuating extents among small-sized versus medium-sized enterprises, as well as manufacturing versus services SMEs. Additionally, proportionate levels of performance corollaries were found to be accruable across the enterprise sizes and operating sectors. Originality/value The paper first identifies four brand-building efforts germane to SMEs within an emerging market and examines their precise contributions to firm performance within enterprise sizes and business operating sectors. It further reinforces the relevance of brand marketing programs to the growth of SMEs by establishing the likelihood and extent to which brand-building efforts impact on SME performance across enterprise sizes, as well as operating sectors. The study also presents issues of potential research and managerial interest from an emerging market, offering insightful implications to researchers and SME managers.

Abstract:
This study explores how 40 decision-makers from Swiss and Thai small or medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) engage and develop international partnerships to discover, create, evaluate and exploit entrepreneurial opportunities across borders. Despite the growing importance of international entrepreneurship research, there is little research considering how entrepreneurial SMEs from different cultural contexts interact with international partners to develop international entrepreneurial opportunities. The findings show how Thai and Swiss entrepreneurs engage in the development of international partnerships to create, explore and exploit opportunities. The empirical study further emphasizes the importance of trustworthy and close interpersonal relationships. The meaning of friendship in culturally different countries is also explored as it pertains to the process of SME internationalization. The findings show important cultural differences. In the collectivistic Thai context, personal and professional networks are closely intertwined. In the development of new partnerships, Thai SMEs pursue the clear objective of developing friendships. In the individualistic Swiss context, partnerships mostly originate from opportunities in the professional context and relationships tend to develop more coincidentally into a trusted friendship.

Abstract:
Purpose The role of marketing as a business function is rapidly changing in China. Consequently, their views on marketing orientation – whether it is accepted, rejected, modified or reframed – have been seriously impacted. This paper aims to report on the results of a survey among Chinese small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) managers and their perceptions of the market-orientation philosophy. In particular, emphasis was placed on three dimensions of market orientation: intelligence generation, intelligence dissemination and responsiveness. The effect of market orientation on business performance was also examined. Design/methodology/approach The authors collected data from 214 managers from SMEs. These businesses were located in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. The commonly used market orientation (MARKOR) measure was used to test the hypotheses. Findings Consistent with the extant literature, the findings provided empirical support for the three dimensions of market orientation among Chinese SME. The authors also found that a positive relationship existed between Chinese SME market orientation and firm performance. Research limitations/implications This study provides major insights into the market orientation measurement and practices of SME in China. From a measurement perspective, the empirical support for MARKOR across a non-Western context is noteworthy. From a practitioner perspective, the implications relating to understanding Chinese SME and how these companies can best market their products and services to their respective markets are critical. Some of the limitations of our study relates to the sample size, convenience sampling and geographic concentration of the respondents. Originality/value This study addresses the gaps in the literature by exploring market orientation in non-large scale businesses as well as the adaptation of the concept in a non-Western cultural setting. The findings extend the conceptualization and application of market orientation to Chinese SME.

Abstract:
The article undertakes a gender analysis of small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurship in Japan to find out whether they affect gender inequality, women and economy; what women empowerment could bring to the development of SME, entrepreneurship and economy in Japan. To answer these questions the author uses gap analysis (gender wage gap, enterprise size wage gap, education wage gap) per industry in dynamics; international comparisons, institutional analysis, trend analysis, case studies, historical analysis and policy analysis. The research finds out that SMEs in Japan maintain higher level of inequality, comparing to large enterprises. Interlocked business relations between SME and large corporations (keiretsu) and employment structure are major and unique factors that exacerbate gender inequality in Japan. Tracing back how labor relations were organized in Japan, the research finds that the exclusion of women from lifetime employment was supposed to suit women’s best interests, however it resulted in subordinate position and economic dependence of women. Women’s entrepreneurship in Japan presents an area of untapped potentials that could effectively tackle a set of socio-economic problems and impact exponentially women empowerment in Japan. Women business in Japan proves to be effective and profitable and, what is more important, it has a “human face” and occupies (among others) vacant niche of social care, both optimizing and humanizing it. Finally, the research concludes that female entrepreneurship requires more attention and support from the government.

Poland’s successful political, economic, and social transformation since the 1990s has seen the dynamic development of family enterprises. Most of them are in the small- and medium-sized enterprises sector and have become an important part of the Polish economy. What drives these family firms is not necessarily physical or even financial capital, but continuous human or social capital. We analyze how family businesses are based on the interdependence of family ownership and business with the social capital of the family. This article reflects on how the government, in encouraging small- and medium-sized enterprise development in an economy with traditionally low social capital, can benefit from the example of high social capital found in family firms. Abstract:
In Ukraine, the importance of small business for the economy and the need to stimulate it are being realized at the level of both the scientific community and public administration. The situation with the pandemic has complicated the conditions of functioning of small and medium-sized busines entities (hereinafter SMEs), but at the same time has justified the need to support it not only in the situation of collapse, but also as a matter of socio-economic stabilization and the prospect of reducing the unemployment rate. The status and conditions of SME functioning, its importance in various spheres of economic activity and in the labor market are researched. The emphasis is on modern trends in the functioning of SMEs, financial relations between the State and SME entities. A comparison of classification characteristics of SMEs was conducted in accordance with the Tax and Commercial Codes of Ukraine. The conditions of operation of small and medium-sized businesses on a simplified taxation system are compared. The latest legislative changes related to the stabilization policy of the State are taken into account. To identify the main trends of small business development, an analysis of the dynamics of the quantity, composition and structure of business in terms of its size, as well as the dynamics of the number of small enterprises and individual entrepreneurs by the largest groups in accordance with the classification of domestic economic activity in the country was carried out. The significance of SMEs in the employment structure is defined in the plane of enterprises and in terms of their size; the need to stimulate entrepreneurship in conditions of global instability is proved. A chronological analysis of the introduction of fiscal instruments for supporting the State in an emergency situation was carried out. In view of international experience, alternative quarantine preferences are considered as possible measures of the State support.
