ABSTRACT A homologue of the mexAB-oprM multidrug efflux operon of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, smeABC, was cloned from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia by using, as a probe, a PCR product amplified from this organism with primers based on the mexB sequence. The smeABC genes were hyperexpressed in a mutant strain displaying resistance to several antimicrobials, including aminoglycosides, β-lactams, and fluoroquinolones. Deletions in smeC but not smeB compromised this resistance, suggesting that SmeC contributed to the multidrug resistance of the mutant as part of another, as-yet-unidentified multidrug e

This paper proposes a rail defect location method based on a single mode extraction algorithm (SMEA) of ultrasonic guided waves. Simulation analysis and verification were conducted. The dispersion curves of a CHN60 rail were obtained using the semi-analytical finite element method, and the modal data of the guided waves were determined. According to the inverse transformation of the excitation response algorithm, modal identification under low-frequency and high-frequency excitation was realized, and the vibration displacements at other positions of a rail were successfully predicted. AbstractThis chapter presents Business Financial Management (BFM) tools for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The presented tools represent a game changer as they shift away from a one-size-fits-all approach to banking services and put emphasis on delivering a personalized SME experience and an improved bank client’s digital experience. An SME customer-centric approach, which ensures that the particularities of the SME are taken care of as much as possible, is presented. Through a comprehensive view of SMEs’ finances and operations, paired with state-of-the-art ML/DL models, the presented BFM tools act as a 24/7 concierge. They also operate as a virtual smart advisor that delivers in a simple, efficient, and engaging way business insights to the SME at the right time, i.e., when needed most. Deeper and better insights that empower SMEs contribute toward SMEs’ financial health and business growth, ultimately resulting in high-performance SMEs.

Abstract:
AbstractTimes of high dynamic and growing new knowledge demand for entrepreneurial education and university engagement. Higher education institutions (HEIs) have established intensive knowledge and resources about entrepreneurial education and relating activities and formats over the last years. As smaller companies (SMEs) are increasingly experimenting with entrepreneurship, they seem to struggle with setting up entrepreneurial activities within their established corporate strategy and innovation structures. It is beneficial for them to collaborate with higher education institutions to minimize the risk and uncertainty associated with implementing entrepreneurship education (EE) and catch up with larger corporates. Further, research lacks a systematic characterization of EE activities in those companies and classification of collaboration formats. Therefore, this study uses qualitative research methods to analyze data from interviews conducted with two German SMEs. Our study contributes to a better understanding of EE in SME and respective HEI collaborations by (1) characterizing EE in SME and SME-HEI collaboration based on attributes and collaboration types defined by their locus of collaboration and intensity of knowledge inflow and (2) identifying differences among EE in SME and HEI. We provide implications to practice—corporate and university EE initiatives—for a more effective design and implementation of EE in SMEs and the SME-HEI collaborations themselves.

Abstract:
Abstract Digitalization has become a crucial focus in today’s world, permeating various facets of life and business. Its benefits have notably amplified since the Covid-19 pandemic, influencing both corporate resilience and sustainability. Despite the significant role SMEs play in contributing to Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP), many exhibit limited understanding of how digitalization and sustainability can bolster their resilience. This study explores the effects of digitalization and sustainability on SME resilience using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS software. The findings reveal that both digitalization and sustainability have a significant positive impact on SME resilience. Additionally, digitalization is shown to play a critical role in enhancing SME sustainability. The research aims to provide actionable insights for SMEs, guiding them in integrating digitalization and sustainability strategies to strengthen their resilience.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a recent survey on the development and accessibility for finance of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in Mongolia. The survey covers a sample of 1922 SMEs from Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, and 21 provinces. We find that banks and local government administrations are the most supportive institutions for SME development. Political instability, corruption, and labour supply, a high lending rate, short maturity loans, and service fees are perceived as the major obstacles that SMEs face in the business environment. Our results also suggest that SMEs in Mongolia are less likely to have access to external finance because of tight credit condition, potentially explaining the lack of SME growth. Implementing country-specific reform strategy for SME development covering key building blocks is needed to promote SME financial inclusion and facilitate SMEs to contribute to the economic growth.

Branding has recently become a powerful competitive tool for SMEs. While there is a growing body of research on branding efforts by SMEs to enhance brand equity, limited attention has been given to the role of public relations (PR) in achieving brand equity for SMEs, particularly from the perspective of a developing country like Ghana. Hence, using signaling theory, this chapter aimed to investigate the effect of PR on SME brand image, identity, and reputation, and how these factors influence SME brand equity with a specific focus on Ghana. Data from 625 respondents was analyzed using PLS-3. The results show that PR significantly impacts an SME's brand image, identity, and reputation. The findings also reveal that SME image and identity significantly influence SME brand equity. Additionally, the results show that the reputation of the SME significantly mediates the relationship between SME brand image, identity, and SME brand equity

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are critical for the development of any economy since they contribute to the business growth and economic development of countries. Financing for SMEs is crucial for economic growth. Although, inadequate SME financing persists. This chapter is a literature review that aims to present different financing sources of SME, and its main constraints, presenting the specific case of Nigeria. Main financing sources to SMEs include angel investors, private funds, retained earnings, individual savings, family and associates, debt capital, bootstrapping, trade credits, banks, commercial institutions, initial public offering, securities markets, and venture capital (VC). Crowdfunding also provided an alternative source of financing SMEs. Regarding constraints, SMEs have limited access to credit due to the absence of collateral security, poor record keeping, poor creditworthiness, inadequate project proposals, etc. The solutions proffered are not exhaustive to mitigate barriers to SME financing.

This study examined the sustainability of SMEs in Arua District, northwestern Uganda. The cross-sectional study used mixed methodologies. The quantitative part used stratified random sampling, while the qualitative arm used purposive sampling. Quantitative data on success and risk factors of SME sustainable growth and development were collected using self-constructed questionnaires. The study found that institutional factors such as finances, infrastructures, location, technology, premise ownership, and board of directors positively impacted SME growth (β = 0.799, p .01). Taxes, legality, investment climate, competitiveness, inflation, and security had no statistically significant impact on SMEs in Arua District (β = 0.135, p =.546). Human variables such as management capacity and training, business planning, business assessment, customer complaint handling, and consumer purchasing power did not affect SMEs‘ sustainable growth and development (β = - 0.139, p= .491). Qualitative research found that SMEs might grow and thrive if their owners receive training and mentorship. Abstract:
This chapter highlights the differences that exist between the e-commerce (EC) perspective of SMEs and the EC perspective from the researchers’ point of view. First the main aspects of SME EC found in a literature review are pointed out and then the results of a SME survey are presented. The findings of this survey, conducted with Austrian SMEs in the automotive industry sector, show for example that EC adoption is slower than expected. Consequently, we introduce a concept that was developed to minimize the identified gap between the two EC perspectives, by connecting university research and regional SME networks more efficiently. This action research-based approach enables SMEs to evaluate the impact of EC on their business model.

Existing evidence has shown that SMEs make great contributions to innovation, job creation and economic growth. This chapter reviews recent literature on (1) the important roles played by SMEs in emerging markets and (2) the impacts of financial development on SME finance in such markets. It also uses a unique database form World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) to document the financing patterns, constraints and other financial issues of SMEs in emerging markets. The descriptive statistics derived from WBES show clear variations of SME financing patterns between emerging and developed markets and shed light on the important role played by financial development in financing SMEs.
