Abstract:
The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to investigate differences in outcomes from two common treatment modalities used to reduce deep overbite: maxillary incisor intrusion using an intrusion arch and posterior tooth eruption using an anterior bite plate. Pre-treatment, post-overbite correction and post-treatment records were gathered from 32 patients who presented with deep overbite malocclusions to the Virginia Commonwealth University orthodontic clinic. Both groups of patients experienced reductions in overbite and maxillary incisor display as well as maxillary and mandibular incisor proclination and mandibular incisor occlusal movement during treatment. In the intrusion arch group, the center of resistance of the maxillary incisor was significantly intruded during overbite correction. The maxillary incisor incisal edge was significantly more intruded at the end of treatment in the intrusion arch group. Both groups experienced flattening of the smile arc in agreement with previous studies showing similar changes in orthodontically treated individuals.

Abstract:
Achievement of optimum smile esthetics during orthodontic treatment has recently been the focus of several published articles in the orthodontic literature. Authors speculate that overbite correction, specifically maxillary incisor intrusion, will lead to flattening of the smile arc and consequently reduce smile attractiveness. The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to investigate differences in outcomes from two common treatment modalities used to reduce deep overbite: maxillary incisor intrusion using an intrusion arch and posterior tooth eruption using an anterior bite plate. Pre-treatment and post-overbite correction records were gathered from 20 patients who presented with deep overbite malocclusions to the Virginia Commonwealth University orthodontic clinic. Both the intrusion arch and bite plate treatment modalities effectively reduced overbite significantly over a relatively short period of treatment. Intrusion arch patients displayed significant reductions in maxillary incisor display (lip to tooth) accompanying documented incisor intrusion. Half of the patients in both groups experienced flattening of the smile arc in agreement with previous studies showing similar changes in orthodontic patients in general. There was no greater tendency for flattening to occur in either group. Changes in the smile arc are likely due to other factors involved in orthodontic tooth alignment and are not necessarily attributable to the overbite correction method employed during treatment.

Abstract:
The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to investigate differences in outcomes from two common treatment modalities used to reduce deep overbite: maxillary incisor intrusion using an intrusion arch and posterior tooth eruption using an anterior bite plate and to assess their influence on smile esthetics. Pre-treatment and post-overbite correction records were gathered from 40 patients with deep overbite malocclusions at the Virginia Commonwealth University orthodontic clinic. Intrusion arch patients displayed significant reductions in maxillary incisor display accompanying documented incisor intrusion. Bite plate patients showed significant lower incisor intrusion and increases in the mandibular plane angle. When compared to the bite plate group, there was a greater tendency for flattening of the smile arc seen in the intrusion arch group. Changes in the smile arc were likely partially a result of the mechanics used but may also have been due to other factors involved in orthodontic tooth alignment.

Abstract:
The thesis describes and applies two parametric option pricing models which partially ease the well-known discrepancy between real world and Black-Scholes model. Stochastic volatility and jumps encompassed by Heston and SVJ models explain implied volatility smile and its heterogeneous term-structure. Both models are calibrated to market data observed for EURUSD currency options on January 23, 2015. While SVJ model provided a better fit for the market, especially for mid-term expiry smile curvature, its estimated risk-neutral parameters were unrealistic comparing with their counterparts under statistical measure. Estimations suggest zero long term price volatility and 2 jumps during the year with average magnitude of 6 \%. Both models failed to match curvature of short time to expiry smile and provided a good fit of term-structure and long-expiry smile. Analysing delta ratios adjusted for non-constant volatility as a possible alternatives the study considered minimum variance delta estimated with Heston model, delta ratio recommended by Nassim Taleb and two deltas adjusted for local volatility assuming sticky moneyness and sticky tree dynamics of implied volatility. On data set of EURUSD options from 1.1.2014 to 30.5.2015, our research did not find any alternative which would be more reliable than common Black-Scholes delta.

Abstract:
If I am anything, I am a Kentuckian, which means I appreciate a good storyteller. In my writing, I hope to bring back some dignity to the “lost cause” of the good values from a broken culture. While I am not quite “southern” enough to qualify as a writer of Southern Gothic fiction, I can relate to this brand of identity crisis in which someone wants to maintain an archaic mindset in a culture charging towards “progress.” As technology and corporate success take precedence over a genteel and pastoral soul, our collective competitiveness has crippled a quaint future of back porch comforts. Being well-read or holding open doors won’t pay for student loans, and there is no such thing as stars in our crowns anymore. For many regions of Kentucky, there is this conflict within the graying of small town communities. My region is one of these. As time marches on, the agrarian lifestyle itself becomes industrialized, and these old family farms, upon which small towns are built, are not self-sustaining. In my stories, I capture the perspectives of a rural community’s personalities. My Regionalism may be dated, but then so are the small town values. With these short stories, I hope to create a collection of characters whose backgrounds may be singular but whose messages are universal. My stories are about the universal fear of loneliness. Perry and White, the cameo characters, pop up throughout because they epitomize this with their irrational companionship. “The Ancient Art of Smile-Making,” “A Well Meaning Marionette,” “The Peacock Cloister,” and “In the Garden, Swallowing Pearls” are essentially about this innate need for company. “Murdered in a Good Dress” and “Myrtle Slog” illustrate the homesickness experienced by those who divorce themselves from closeness of the rural community. Sometimes we call “friendship” kitschy and cliché. And why is that? I made Perry and White’s bond a bit absurd because it is almost ridiculous that there could be a person in the wild world who would sacrifice themselves.

Abstract:
The report shows the development during the last six months of the SMILE fluxgate magnetometer from a basic platform into a first generation magnetometer. The purpose of the SMILE project is to develop a miniaturized digital fluxgate magnetometer for the Nanospace project. The Nanospace project is collaboration by KTH and IRF Uppsala with the goal to develop a nano satellite platform. The FPGA programming has been improved to include a functional correlation loop, 13 bit DACs and a parallel and a serial interface with several output modes. The timing of the processes in the FPGA has been improved making it more robust. Some critical changes to the analogue parts has also been made. The LEMI sensors have been tested in a number of ways to increase the understanding of their characteristics. The magnetometer has also been calibrated at the Nurmijärvi geophysical observatory in Finland.

Scarborough, Larry. "Self-perception of Smile Aesthetics and Self-esteem." VCU Scholars Compass, 2011. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/2508.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Self-perception of smile aesthetics has been suggested as the most common reason for seeking orthodontic treatment. A recent study concluded that an improvement of dental attractiveness at the end of orthodontic treatment had positive effects on self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between one’s self-perceived smile aesthetics and their self-esteem. Methods: A survey was conducted where each subject completed an evaluation of their smile aesthetics and a Rosenberg Self-esteem Test (RST). A smiling photograph of each subject was evaluated by dental professionals for dental aesthetics and straightness. Results: Female students rated their teeth straighter than males (mean = 78.5, p value < .0001). Self-esteem varied by race (p = 0.0017). African Americans had the highest self-esteem. There was a significant relationship between a subject’s satisfaction with their smile and their self-esteem (r = .30, p < .0001), but not with their self rating of their smile straightness (r = 0.11, p = 0.0528). Conclusions: Subjects with straight teeth perceived their smile as more aesthetic. Subjects that perceived themselves as having a more aesthetic smile had a higher self-esteem. Subjects that had orthodontic treatment in the past perceived their teeth were straighter and their smile was more aesthetic. There was no relationship between previous orthodontic therapy and self-esteem. Perception of smile aesthetics may be a more important aspect and a better predictor of self-esteem than a subject’s actual smile aesthetics.

Luo, Lin. "Modelling FX smile : from stochastic volatility to skewness." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/11313.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the design and analysis of a tractable model, which can capture the key features ofthe observed implied volatility smile surface in the foreign exchange (FX) market, and is flexible enough to be extended to price path-dependent exotic options. In the first part, we examine the dynamics ofthe exchange rate via the conditional distribution implied from option prices, in which the theory and various techniques for implied distribution are analyzed. We identify three sources of uncertainty that need to be modelled: the stochastic exchange rate process, the stochastic volatility, and the stochastic skewness, which can be observed either from the implied higher moments or from its proxy measure 'C risk reversal. An error correction model (ECM) of these higher moments is then proposed to exploit excess returns in the FX underlying market. In the second part, we follow the instrumental approach to explore a tractable model that can address all three sources of uncertainty and reproduce the current market implied volatility smile. Our review of the local volatility model, stochastic volatility model and jump models indicates that individual model is insufficient to account for the asymptotic behaviour of the entire smile surface. The combined models are interesting yet lack oftractability. CarT & Wu [2005] model, which uses two Levy processes to model the up and down jump to capture stochastic skewness, is restricted to price European options. The identification ofthe Albanese and Mijatovic [2006] model completesthis journey. The model, which combines local volatility and Variance Gammajump with regime -switching controlled by a stochastic volatility process, is defined on a continuous time lattice, thus it is both complicated enough to calibrate to the smile surface, and flexible enough to price both European and exotic options. In .the last part, we investigate the methodology to price the FX barrier options within this lattice framework, in which we propose an algorithm to calculate the exponential for nonnormal matrix.

Abstract:
Problem: The standard Black-Scholes framework cannot incorporate the volatility smiles usually observed in the markets. Instead, one must consider alternative stochastic volatility models such as the SABR. Little research about the suitability of the SABR model for Swedish market (swaption) data has been found. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to account for and to calibrate the SABR model for swaptions trading on the Swedish market. We intend to alter the calibration techniques and parameter values to examine which method is the most consistent with the market. Method: In MATLAB, we investigate the model using two different minimization techniques to estimate the model’s parameters. For both techniques, we also implement refinements of the original SABR model. Results and Conclusion: The quality of the fit relies heavily on the underlying data. For the data used, we find superior fit for many different swaption smiles. In addition, little discrepancy in the quality of the fit between methods employed is found. We conclude that estimating the α parameter from at-the-money volatility produces slightly smaller errors than using minimization techniques to estimate all parameters. Using refinement techniques marginally increase the quality of the fit.

The expansion of the derivatives market in the world and especially in Brazil has driven its users to enhance and develop tools for more efficient pricing. With this purpose, this paper aims to point which window of observations generates the kurtosis and skewness that more soften the volatility smile using the Corrado-Su model. Therefore, the firms that were chosen were Petrobras PN and Vale PNA, because their stocks and options are the most liquid in Brazilian market. The data analysis indicated a greater smoothing volatility smile using the windows of observations of the short term instead of the long term, and a equivalent performance of the first ones to that of the Black-Scholes model.

A sociedade moderna, progressivamente, proporciona ambientes sociot?cnicos com sistemas complexos.
A modern society, progressively, provides increasingly sociotechnical environments through of complex systems. This complexity is to due to the large number of parties interacting in a non-simple way, given the properties of these parts and the laws governing these interactions. In addition to this circumstance, the Software Engineering reinforces that the universe of information needed to perform a broader modeling, and involves more dimensions of already consolidated: static and dynamic. Thus, the iStar framework emerges with an ontology capable of capturing and represent intentional and social information of the environment analyzed in two graphic models: Strategic Dependency (SD) and Strategic Reasoning (SR). However, this same framework does not offer alternatives to improve the understanding of its graphic models, when these represent a large number of parts of these environments. Therefore, the objective of this dissertation was to offer an alternative to the iStar framework to deal with the complexity provided by the complex systems, in order to positively influence the understanding and learning of the iStar models. To this end, a textual notation has been developed to understand social information through an interdependent structure. In the developed evaluation, it was observed the relevance of this textual notation for the graphic models as follows: (i) a complementary alternative for reading of the graphic models, as well as (ii) the importance of building these models from interdependent structures.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the role of esthetics is determinant in a person’s life. An aesthetically pleasant smile can improve the self-esteem and can lead to a greater society acceptance. The main purpose of a dental esthetic treatment is to conceive a natural and healthy dental appearance. The dentist can’t limit the treatment of one or a group of teeth, he/she must acquire a wider view (macroesthetics). Macroesthetics represent the relations between the face, the lips, the gum and the teeth to obtain a whole esthetic result. To achieve a correct treatment plan and design an ideal and harmonious smile is required, previously, a detailed assessment of facial and periodontal parameters and aspects involving the teeth as a group. However, professionals shouldn’t stick entirely to aesthetical standards, they should use them as guides to initiate a suitable treatment plan for each patient. In this work, it was elaborated a checklist/clinical record proposal that can be used by dentists for the evaluation of patients’ smiles, in order to facilitate the diagnosis and the elaboration of the treatment plan. The macroesthetics parameters (facial, periodontal and dental) developed throughout this work were included in this checklist proposal. The main objectives of this narrative review contemplated: (1) the literature review of the topic, (2) the description of the facial, periodontal and 2nd sextant parameters to evaluate when seeking an esthetic rehabilitation of this sector, and how these parameters relate to each other, (3) contextualization of the divine proportion to facial and dental parameters, (4) development of a checklist with the parameters to be used in the analysis of a smile. The survey coursed between January and May of 2014, resorting mainly to the data base PubMed. The keywords used were: “aesthetics”, “anterior teeth”, “smile design”, “smile analysis”, “esthetic dentistry”, “golden proportion”, “esthetic parameters”, facial analysis”, “facial aesthetics”, “macroesthetic elements AND smile”, “macroaesthetics”, “gummy smile”, “orthodontics AND smile”, “golden rule”, “divine proportion”, “gingival aesthetics” e “gingival display”, and the methodology research included: (1) articles published in the last 14 years, (2) in Portuguese and English, (3) free full text, (4) article type: narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyzes, observational studies and clinical trials.

Abstract

The main aim of this study was to investigate if four humour styles, affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humour can be related to all five dimensions of the Big Five Factor Model of personality and study if gender has any influence on those relation-ships. A survey questionnaire was distributed among 72 individuals from Kalmar County, in the South-east of Sweden. There were 42 women and 30 men. A humour test questionnaire, Humour Scale Questionnaire (HSQ), with 32 items was used and the Big Five Factor test with 40 items was used for personality test. The results showed that men have a more aggressive humour than women and that the older we get the less affiliative and self-enhancing humour we have. There was no correlation between age and defeat humour style. When it comes to personality it turned out that women are more goal oriented and more open as well as nicer than men. Women are also more extrovert and they have a tendency to feel unpleasant emo-tions more easily than men.

Abstract:

MTsim (Mobile Traffic Simulator) is an Ericsson AB internal software application that is part of 2Gsim. It is used to simulate elements of a GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network for feature testing and automated testing. It is written in the programming language TSS Language, also known as SMILE which is a proprietary Ericsson programming language. SMILE is based on the principles of state matrix programming which in essence means that each program is on its own a finite state machine. The language is old and was originally intended as a macro language for smaller test programs, not for applications the size of MTsim.

It is of interest to evaluate the feasibility of performing an automatic conversion of applications written in SMILE, with special interest in converting MTsim, to a Java framework since Java has many advantages compared to SMILE. Java, as a language, is well suited for larger applications, there are numerous well supported tools and there is a much wider spread competence than there is for SMILE.

It is clear that in order to do a full conversion of a SMILE program to a Java framework two applications must be implemented. First a Java framework, which acts as a run time environment, must be designed which can host the translated programs. The other part is an actual translator which takes a SMILE program as input and ouputs a translated Java program. A more sophisticated framework is preferred since it makes the actual translated programs more light weight and easy to read which means higher degree of maintainability.

There are different ways to implement state machines in Java but the most flexible and versatile is to implement it as a black-box framework in an object oriented way where the framework has sophisticated mechanisms for message and event handling which is central to any state machine framework.

The translation for SMILE can easily be done by using a AST (abstract syntax tree) representation, which is a full representation of the SMILE program in tree-form. The AST is obtained from an intermediate state of the SMILE program compiler.

Abstract:
Calle Strand: Brian Wilson presents Smile! – a study of the circumstances surrounding theabandonment of Smile - Uppsala University, Department of Musicology, C-essay. This essay is about the course of events that led to the abandonment of the Beach Boys albumSmile in 1967. The purpose of the essay is to differentiate the medial assumption of why Smilewas never released and also investigate to what extent media have influenced this assumption. The medial assumption is compared to actual events of the time of the abandonment andthe difference is then being discussed in a media-theoretical perspective. The theoretical framework is based on theories by Denis McQuail. His ideas aboutmedia's influences on the reception of its audience are of great importance for the essay andthe notions of agenga-setting and framing has a central role. Finally the conclusion is drawn that the medial assumption is a simplified and distortedexplanation to why Smile was never released. The actual events discover several alternativereasons, but media choose to focus on the assumption that gain them the most (they set theagenda and frame the information to their advantage) and present it as the only reason to theabandonment of Smile.

Quinlan, Sarah. "?Never short of a smile?: A Content Analysis of Travel Guidebooks." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/726.

Full text
Abstract:
Guidebooks are argued to be significant elements of the tourism infrastructure (Koshar, 1998), influencing the perception of destinations and the travel practices of millions of tourists (Gilbert, 1999). Guidebooks have been depicted as mediators, interpreters, and communicators of place and people, yet the examination of these texts as part of tourism has received little attention in the academic literature. There are few studies focusing on what information guidebooks are presenting to tourists (Bhattacharyya, 1997; Lew, 1991; McGregor, 2000).

In pursuit of cultural, environmental, and leisure experiences, tourists are going all over the world and there is increasing concern over the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts of this activity. Information on these impacts can be found in academic literature and government reports, but rarely is it presented to tourists.

The purpose of this study is to analyse and describe how travel guidebooks communicate information on socio-cultural, environmental, and other destination specific issues. The republic of Peru was the case study area for this research.

Destination data was collected through interviews with tourism representatives in Perú, Destination Management Organisation (DMO) website analysis, and participant observation. This data was analysed to provide a coding scheme for the current issues and impacts in Peru relating to tourism. This coding scheme was used to analyse the content of the most commonly used commercial guidebooks for Peru (Lonely Planet, South American Handbook, Rough Guide) to understand if and how guidebooks are addressing current issues in Peru tourism.

Qualitative content analysis of destination data resulted in 29 emergent categories which were evaluated based on theme distributions (socio-cultural, environmental, and other) and source information. Categories were grouped based on importance values to allow for further examination of the main issues and impacts involved in Peru tourism.

Qualitative analysis of guidebook content resulted in 4 additional categories for a total of 33 items. This was followed by quantitative analysis of guidebook content to better understand theme distributions, statement types, marketing communication types, and relationships with original category intentions. Guidebook content was organised into groups based on importance values and compared with the importance groups found in the destination data to determine differences in category relevance.

The implications of this research in presenting information to tourists are discussed in terms of their relevance to socio-cultural and environmental interpretation, marketing and communication theory, and responsible tourism. Similarities and differences found in comparing destination and guidebook data are examined. Findings and discussions based on this research indicate that the role of the guidebook is multi-dimensional. These texts, juxtaposed between host and guest, mediate and interpret ecological, cultural, and social information. Findings of this research suggest that though guidebooks are involved in persuasive messaging which raises issues of power and representation, guidebooks are the only popular tourist information source in Peru attempting to influence tourists to reduce cultural and environmental impacts. This discussion is followed by suggestions for future research in this area.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we study the problem of hedging the volatility risk with consistent models and with volatility derivatives in two different cases : only the stock is traded and both the stock and vanilla options (European puts and calls) are traded. In the first case, we assume that the information content is the risk neutral moments of the logreturn. Then, we give a moment consistent model thanks to an extension for the local volatility model (Dupire 1994). We dynamically delta hedge the volatility risk. Moreover, we obtain closed-form formulas for the price of a European call similar to the Jarrow-Rudd formula (Jarrow and Rudd 1982) and for the smile of implied volatility. In the second case, we choose two different ways : the skew market model (SMM) and the volatility derivatives. The SMM describes the dynamics iod the smiles of implied volatility with the ATM (at-the-money) volatility, the skew and the curve, i. E. The convexity level. These processes are synthetically tradeable, i. E. Replicable, with vanilla options. They provide dynamic hedges, called vega hedges, against the main moves of the smile : the SMM dynamically delta-vega hedge the volatility risk. We give conditions of absence of arbitrage in this model. Finally, we introduce the volatility derivatives. They are used for statically hedging the volatility risk (static vega hedge), in addition to the dynamic delta hedge. After a presentation of the volatility derivatives, we will see that, except for a few volatility derivatives as the famous variance swap (Dupire 1992), their development strongly depends on an arbitrage free market model which provides efficient dynamic vega hedges

Abstract:
In this thesis, I conduct an ecocritical reading of Alan Moore’s tenure as writer on DC Comics’ monthly superhero comic Swamp Thing, which spanned from Volume 2 Issue 20 (January 1984) to Volume 2 Issue 64 (September 1987). I explore the ways in which Swamp Thing’s efforts to understand “the green”—a metaphysical network that connects all plant life in the universe—both challenge and reinforce the classical, Western division between Culture and Nature. Richard Harrison claims that the tenure of each creative team on a superhero comic establishes that tenure as a novel built around a “‘core cluster’ of first principles that define the hero in time and place and set his or her story in motion” (26). Whereas the core cluster of first principles for Wein and Wrightson’s run on Swamp Thing establishes non-human Nature as a physically violent force that unites with violent Culture to produce the monstrous body of Swamp Thing, Moore’s run establishes a core cluster of second principles that posit a more peaceful Nature that is continuously in conflict with the violence of Culture. The primary image of Wein’s first principles is Swamp Thing’s face frozen in an expression of horror and agony, while Moore’s second principles rely on a peaceful, smiling expression on Swamp Thing’s face, which suggests that Swamp Thing’s face is the face of ecology and an icon for the point at which humans can speak to the environment. Wein’s Swamp Thing was the anguished face of the environment, the point at which humans experience the sublime horror of the swamp, but Moore’s Swamp Thing is the smiling face of the environment, the point at which humans are invited to interact with the plants that comprise the swamp. For ecology to be possible in Swamp Thing’s world, humans must engage the smiling face of the environment.

Smiles are considered some of the most sincere human facial expressions, and perhaps the most esthetically pleasing ones. Thought to be impossible to fake, the 「Duchenne smile」 has long been considered the paragon of authenticity when it comes to judging smiles. Its opposite, the 「Botox smile」 has always been the definitive to-avoid smile in human interactions. It can be assumed that Chinese citizens have a more diminished sense of comfort and controlled mornitoring, which would result in a more reserved and less fluid body language and facial expressions. However, is that true or is that just the impression given off by certain differences between individuals? And if so, how much of the influence of these aspects can be caught on camera and broadcast through the visual device? For this objective, I found some pictures to take pictures. But the whole process of pictures to make video .As the photographer is stalling, their reactions are being recorded to be later analyzed by the viewers through a combination of face reading, body language interpretation and emotional literacy. The existence of both introverted and extroverted individuals in all types of societies is clearly illustrated by the experiment''s results. A large part of the subjects of this study can be classes as more reserved. The lack of a vaster pool of subjects greatly limits the possibility of this study to say which type of social individual constitutes the majority in the People''s Republic of China. The visual experience found in the material is without doubt a more distilled method of connecting with Chinese individuals and their emotions. While the context is the same - waiting for a picture to be taken, the atmosphere and types of smiles vary greatly.

Summary The creative concept of the essay is the author''s discussion about the conflict and paradox caused by the discordance between the psychological and physical behaviors. The author usually notices that, in order to get adapted to the society or the external pressure, human beings have to conceal the real self and perform another self which accords with others'' expectation. The performing self tends to be false and hypocrite. Through the depiction of human face, the author takes human expression as the main painting contents in an attempt to make audience pay more attention to the atmosphere of human expression. It is also a creative way for the author to introspect his own inner self. The colorful and powdery features of Chinese gouache painting match the specific meaning of the term "make-up" better in creation. Because both camouflage and make-up mean changing the original and real expression, the connection can be used to reach the goal of the creation. On the other hand, the principal feature of subjects'' expression is laughter accompanied by warm colors. It makes people feel happy and joyful. However, the face of subjects is made up by fragments and pieces like a jigsaw. The creation of the contrary perception is expected to reach the feeling of camouflage. The expression pretends to be the recognizable aspect by others, but the mental emotion presents the contrary conflict and paradox, so it results in the fragmentary outcome. Chinese gouache painting is used as the media to explain the perception of self for camouflage. It is presented with the performance of plane visual art in an attempt to disclose one''s own creative traces in different ways of creation and explore different aspects of creation. The summary of the essay is as follows: Chapter One explains the motive, purpose, and range of the personal research. Chapter Two describes the author''s creative concepts and contents, including the change and process of his creations after he attends the graduate school, and illustrates the information related to his concept. Chapter Three briefly describes the performing methods and media. Chapter Four is the analysis of the creation. Chapter Five is the conclusion which reviews the meaning of the creation for self in the phase and adjusts the advantages and disadvantages related to the creation for the future development.

Biometric system will be one of the most important applications of the 21st century technology, biometrics-related industries can imagine an optimistic view. In recent years, with the development of social networking sites, many people will upload their own life bit by bit to the network. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, using photographic images replace text to describe has become a habit of the modern Internet. In order to meet users'' needs, not only the human face detection, facial expression recognition is often on adding features. If you want to express an expression, the face lower half of the mouth is an important message of judgment. Smiling face is the world''s common language, most of the people in the pictures as often photographed with a smile face. Therefore, this study aims to identify and classify the smiling face and no smiling face . Present study is based on the Viola method to face detection and retrieve the mouth area. A small amount of geometric features combined with the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) method of classification smiling face. Use angles as the geometric features of the mouth, then the features input to BPNN neural network for training and classification. Finally, the results of training accuracy rate of 90.0% and classification recognition rate 80.0%. On the results, small amount of angle features used in this study, the samples can be effectively classify most of the faces, and has an ideal smile recognition capability.

Based on the social function of emotions, we conducted two studies to verify: 1. Whether consumers will be affected by the sales staff's smile intensity, and affect social cognition (competence / warmth); 2. Whether the smile intensity of the model affects the effectiveness of the advertisement and the consumers’ willingness to purchase, or whether it is affected by the interaction of the adjustment focus (promotion/ prevention). Methods: In the first study, the photos which are used to simulate the real condition when consumers enter the store show the relationship between the smiles intensity and social cognition. As for the second study, we will study the regulatory focus interaction, smile intensity, advertising effectiveness, and purchase intention. First of all, when the second-level smile of the salesperson is low, the consumer tend to think the salesperson is more competence, but less warm; however, the salesperson with a four-level smile makes the consumer more warmth, but lack of competence. Second, the intensity of the four-level smile of the model in the advertising words will affect the advertising effectiveness and the purchase intention. Third, the smile intensity is the regulatory focus, which has a positive impact on the advertising effectiveness and purchase intention.

Studies on gummy smile used to put more stress on soft tissue analysis. Recently, some studies started to explore the relationship between soft tissue and underlying hard tissue. They tried to find out the hard tissue characteristics of gummy smile with cephalometric measurement, but often failed to compare the difference between males and females due to fewer male gummy smile individuals. In this study, we tried to find out the hard tissue characteristics of gummy smile in cephalometric measurement for males and females by clinical static posed smile photos and records used to define the gummy smile group and non-gummy smile groups. Finally, we used JMP 9.0 (two-sample t-test, and ROC curve, and stepwise logistic regression) for analysis of the cephalometric measurement, and found out the factors resulting in gummy smile in males and females. In males, the cephalometric factors are A-Nv, ANS-Me, and tooth to lip; in females, the cephalometric factors are facial axis angle, anterior facial height, and tooth to lip. We found that the vertical factor was the key to gummy smile, and the value of tooth to lip was important in clinical use.

During the elections in Taiwan, many political campaign billboards from different candidates are set up everywhere, and they are used to be the earliest marketing tool in all campaigns, with the purpose of leaving a deep impression on the voters. Observing candidates’ billboard image advertisementsi around us, you can see that candidates smile in different ways in order to show his/her charm. Therefore, understanding how facial expressions of smiles will influence the evaluation of voters, and which expression can elicit highest voting intentionsb is an important issue. This research integrates the theoretical perspectives from emotional contagion, social judgments, and sincerity of smile, arguing that facial expressions of candidates, smile intensity (broad smile vs. slight smile vs. neutral expression) and smile sincerity (genuine vs. false), can influence voter affective attitudes, cognitive attitudes, and voting intentions towards candidates through both affective and cognitive mechanisms. This research conducted three experiments. Experiments 1 and 2 focus on candidates of different gender to test ten hypotheses. Experiment 3 considers the potential impact of gender stereotypes and re-tests the mediation mechanism of smile intensity effect. The results of this research indicate the following key findings. (1) For female candidates, broad smile elicits higher levels of pleasure and warmth perceptions in voters, but the positive influence on competence perceptions is unstable. (2) For male candidates, slight smile elicits higher levels of competence perceptions. (3) For female candidates, smile intensity effects on improving affective attitudes and voting intentions are mediated by higher levels of pleasure, and smile intensity effects on eliciting higher levels of competence perceptions and improving cognitive attitudes and voting intentions are mediated by higher levels of warmth perceptions. (4) For male candidates, smile intensity effects on improving cognitive attitudes and voting intentions are mediated by higher levels of competence perceptions. (5) For candidates, cognitive attitudes have greater effects on voting intentions than affective attitudes. (6) Candidates’ genuine smile elicits higher levels of pleasure, warmth perceptions and competence perceptions than false smile. (7) For female candidates, showing false smile would weaken the effect gap between broad smile and slight smile on pleasure, warmth perceptions and competence perceptions. (8) The perspective of candidate gender stereotypes can be used to explain the different responses of voters to smiling expressions displayed by candidates of different gender. Research results provide the theoretical contributions and practical advice to the application of character images in the campaign billboards.

Abstract:

In this paper, we report the results of our recent research into the understanding of the exact distribution of a smile across the face, especially the distinction in the weight distribution of a smile between a genuine and a posed smile. To do this, we have developed a computational framework for the analysis of the dynamic motion of various parts of the face during a facial expression, in particular, for the smile expression. The heart of our dynamic smile analysis framework is the use of optical flow intensity variation across the face during a smile. This can be utilised to efficiently map the dynamic motion of individual regions of the face such as the mouth, cheeks and areas around the eyes. Thus, through our computational framework, we infer the exact distribution of weights of the smile across the face. Further, through the utilisation of two publicly available datasets, namely the CK+ dataset with 83 subjects expressing posed smiles and the MUG dataset with 35 subjects expressing genuine smiles, we show there is a far greater activity or weight distribution around the regions of the eyes in the case of a genuine smile.

Abstract:
Estimating the representative agent's or the market's degree of risk aversion from securities prices has a long history. However, it is only since this century that scholars have begun using options data to do so. Options provide a particularly promising context for studying risk preferences. Embedded in the prices of traded options is rich information set relating to various aspects of the underlying asset. One piece of embedded information is the state price density. To the best of my knowledge, the implied risk aversion deriving from state price density or the "risk neutral" distribution has not been well studied in Canadian context. In this paper, the author investigates the volatility smile derived from call options on the Canadian S&P/TSX 60 Index, which is one of the most heavily traded index options in the Canadian market. Then from the option pricing function, the author recovers the risk neutral distribution by using the nonparametric approach--the regularization method proposed by Jackwerth and Rubinstein (1996). The final step is to compare the option inferred risk neutral distribution with the estimated actual distribution of index prices based on, for example, the historical price path over the same time interval. The relationship between these two distributions depends on the preference (utility) of investors about money, as they grow richer or poorer. Knowing both distributions allows us to infer what the preferences must be within an economy to be consistent with the option price and the historical returns.

Past literature explain the presence of volatility smile in interest rate options markets as the consequence of the violation of standard Brownian motion in Heath, Jarrow, and Morton model (HJM, 1992) and proposing alternative approaches to deal this violation is unsatisfactory and insufficient. In this paper, we do not use alternative model to deal with volatility smile, we construct several neutral portfolios by buying the option at the bottom of HJM volatility smile and sell the options on the top of the smile. The trading profits earned in our portfolios indicate volatility smile in Euribor options markets from January 1 2003 to December 31 2005 is not wholly due to the specification error for HJM model. The actual volatility smile pattern in Euribor options markets is steeper than the model predicted in the sample period, particularly for short-term options. We have found that the net buying pressure of Bollen and Whaley (2004) has caused the rise in out-of-the-money calls and puts in Euribor options markets within our examined period.

This paper proposes implied deterministic volatility function (IVF) by using simple regressions as the function of money and time to maturity to seek the best model for the pattern of volatility smile in the HJM model. Moreover, using the IVF both in HJM model and ad hoc approach to price the Eurodollar futures options from 3 January 2005 to 14 July 2008 and comparing the in-sample fitting error and out-of-sample prediction error to identify the best model. The result indicates that the symmetric function considering all variables outperform other models using regression analysis. Then the results of pricing in using HJM model are different from in using ad hoc approach. We employ the curvature variable and maturity variable yielding a better pricing performance in HJM model pricing while linear variable yielding a better pricing performance in ad hoc approach. Finally, we find that pricing option in HJM model is more stable than in ad hoc approach.

I tried to analyze the creation through formations and contents of my photographic works. The following is the structure of this work. Chapter one is a preface to describe the motive and the purpose of this research. I want to record faces of era in Taiwan and preserve history by portrait photography. Chapter two is the review of references. I tried to discuss the context of portrait photography and the social meaning of portrait. I discussed the text of portrait photography with the conception of Walter Benjamin’s “aura” and “ritual,” Roland Barthes’s “Punctum" and “Studium,” and Susan Sontag’s “Humanitarianism.” In addition, I referred to works and ideas of August Sander, a German photographer, for a base of this thesis. Chapter three is about the subject and practice of the creation. My creation can divide into three series including “The represention of Aura,” “Smile” and “The Documentary of 319.” I described the combination of subject and my experience to explain and analyze my works comprehensively. Chapter four is the conclusion. I summed my discussion up and reflected the evolvement of creation right now. National Museum of Taiwan History has reserved the portrait inside this thesis in 2012. I was aware that the aura in traditional portrait photos has gone in the digital era and affected the sense and direction of image. I wish to take portrait photographs full of humor and story that can touch heart deeply piece by piece on this familiar land, then, become the record of era.

The main purpose of this study is to present a method which applies Support Vector Machines which is maintained by two color spaces to Face Detection. First of all, the researcher transferred an image from RGB color space to YCbCr and Normalized Color Coordinates (NCC) color space to reduce the influence which is affected by different light condition to skin sample. After color space translation, the researcher could obtain YCbCr skin and NCC skin, and then found out some skin regions from original image by fuzzy computation. Finally, these skin regions were inputted into Support Vector Machines to distinguish which are or aren't human faces. The result of this research appears that the overall accuracy rate of this system is 97.08%. After face detection, to identify the position of the mouth which is according to eye coordinates, and then the researcher can use curve fitting to calculate the degree of smile. We hope that by applying the result of this research to many situations between users and computer systems that we can get more intuitive interactions between users and systems. For example, robots with this kind of equipment can understand the emotional reaction of human. In others cases, this technique could used to assist doctors to estimate emotion of patients, or for people who are talking by mobile but also understanding the emotion of other people by detecting the emotion of cell phone users, or for some service business to remind their staff to always maintain a smile to attract more customers.
