Abstract:
The papers in this Special Issue of AjPP were submitted by keynote speakers who participated in the International Conference on Assimilate Transport and Partitioning (ICATP99) held at Newcastle Convention Centre, Newcastle, Australia during 1520 August, 1999. ICATP99 was co-convened by Tina Offler, The University of Newcastle and Michael Thorpe, HortResearch, New Zealand. It was the sixth in a series of International Conferences since 1974 and was attended by 220 delegates from 21 countries. ICATP99 opened with a pre-conference dinner at which an aboriginal elder and custodian of the Mimaga Wajaar (Mother Earth) culture, Uncle Bill Smith, warmly welcomed delegates to the Awabakal tribal lands of local indigenous ancestors with a message to freely share knowledge. This point was further developed in an afterdinner speech by Don Geiger (Dayton, USA), a founding member of this series. Delegates transformed these sentiments into effect throughout the scientific program, rendering ICATP99 a rewarding and valuable experience for all. The next conference will be convened in Germany during 2003.

Abstract:
Background: The outbreak of Covid-19 has led to a health emergency and economic crisis worldwide. Mortality in productive age further worsens the crisis, so it is important to understand reasons for death in productive age group. Objective: To identify predictors of mortality and to compare the intensity of rise in inflammatory markers of amongst young Covid-19 decedents in comparison with elder Covid-19 decedents. Method: Record based study of Covid-19 infected admitted patients was conducted in tertiary care hospital. Information of all (n=3131, 209 deceased and 2922 recovered patients) Covid-19 positive patient assessed . Their clinico epidemiological markers were compared between younger (18-45 years) decedents in comparision with elder decedents (>45 years). Mann–Whitney U-test and the Chi-square test for significance were used. Bivariate Multiple logistic regression was used to identify predictors in younger and elder decedents. Results: Case Fatality Rate (CFR) in Covid-19 infected patients was 2.4% and 9.7% amongst younger and elder group respectively. (OR 8.83 : 95% CI 5.9-13.2; p < 0.001). Biomarkers were raised and similar in both groups except Neutrophil Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) was significantly higher in elder decedent while LDH was significantly higher in younger decedents. Conclusions: Males had higher CFR than females after 45 years of age, which was due to co-morbidity. Reaching late to the health care facility and high LDH were predictors in younger decedent, while male gender, co morbidities and high NLR were more important predictors in elder group.

Abstract:
Changing emigration and co-residence patterns in the post-Soviet period have left many elderly Russians living alone or without caretakers in close proximity. In addition, Russia's transition from state socialism to neoliberal capitalism has encouraged private welfare groups, often funded and staffed by foreigners, to assume increased responsibility for providing social security to elderly people. Consequently, notions of compassion are undergoing transformation in Russia, and the types of people who provide care are also changing dramatically as caregivers are more likely to be strangers, and especially foreigners, rather than family members. This article examines social security arrangements among Russia's elderly, with particular emphasis on the emergence of transnational caregiving relationships, and how these caregiving arrangements differ from global care networks reported elsewhere.

Abstract:
Characterizing the types of elder abuse and identifying the characteristics of perpetrators are critically important. This study examined the types of elder abuse reported to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) resource line. Calls were coded with regard to whether abuse was reported, types of abuse alleged, whether multiple abuse subtypes occurred, and who perpetrated the alleged abuse. Of the 1,939 calls, 818 (42.2%) alleged abuse, with financial abuse being the most commonly reported (449 calls, 54.9%). A subset of calls identified multiple abuse types (188, 23.0%) and multiple abusers (149, 18.2%). Physical abuse was most likely to co-occur with another abuse type (61/93 calls, 65.6%). Family members were the most commonly identified perpetrators (309 calls, 46.8%). This study reports the characteristics of elder abuse from a unique source of frontline data, the NCEA resource line. Findings point to the importance of supportive resources for elder abuse victims and loved ones.

A variety of forces have shifted the conceptualization of elder abuse over time to where it is almost unrecognizable when compared to its original conceptualization. The field has adopted or embraced whatever social problem is in vogue in an attempt to elevate elder abuse to a recognizable social problem that to date has eluded the field. This paper traces the various influences on the shifting conceptualizations of elder abuse and how those conceptualizations have shaped society's response. The paper concludes by suggesting that multiple conceptualizations can and must co-exist, a framework which is consistent with the multidisciplinary team approach becoming prevalent in the field.

Abstract:
Elder abuse is an underdetected, under-reported issue with severe consequences. Its detection presents unique challenges based on characteristics of this vulnerable population, including cognitive impairment, age-related deconditioning, and an increased number of co-morbidities, all of which predispose to increase vulnerability to injury. While radiologists play a critical role in detection of child abuse, this role is currently not paralleled in detection of elder abuse. We conducted a thorough review of the literature using MEDLINE to describe the current knowledge on injury patterns and injury findings seen in elder abuse, as well as barriers to and recommendations for an increased role of diagnostic imaging in elder abuse detection. Barriers limiting the role of radiologists include lack of training and paucity of rigorous systematic research delineating distinctive imaging findings for physical elder abuse. We outline the current ways in which imaging can help raise clinical suspicion for elder abuse, including inconsistencies between purported mechanism of injury and imaging findings, injury location, multiple injuries at differing stages of healing, and particular patterns of injury likely to be intentionally inflicted. We additionally outline the mechanism by which medical education and clinical workflow may be modified to increase the role for imaging and radiologist participation in detecting abuse in older adult patients, and identify potential future directions for further systematic research.

Abstract:
Abstract Elder abuse is mistreatment of an older adult by a caregiver or another person in a position with an expectation of trust. Adversely affecting as many as 10% of community-dwelling older adults in the US, it may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, financial exploitation and neglect. Mental illness and substance use by caregivers, family members and victims themselves have been described as risk factors for multiple forms of elder abuse in prior cross-sectional analyses but the impact on these cases is poorly understood. To explore this association we conducted a focus group using a semi-structured format involving an inter-disciplinary group of elder abuse professionals that are part of the New York City Elder Abuse Center enhanced multi-disciplinary team (EMDT) in Staten Island, New York. Focus group participants reported that opioid, cocaine, cannabis and alcohol use is common among perpetrators of elder abuse, especially in cases of financial mistreatment, verbal and physical abuse. Other potential consequences included eviction of the older adult victim, co-dependency and involvement of the older adult in the procurement of illicit substances, and substance use by the older adult. Respondents specifically expressed concerns that the opioid epidemic, including rising heroin use, may be changing the frequency and nature of elder abuse, and that case investigations offer an opportunity to facilitate referrals for formal substance use disorder assessment and treatment. Future work includes additional focus groups and quantitative analysis to clarify the intersection between substance use and elder abuse and inform intervention and prevention strategies.

Abstract:
Abstract Elder abuse is a growing concern worldwide. It is described across multiple professional disciplines: as a social justice issue by social workers; as a medical syndrome and public health issue by health care providers; and as a violation of human rights and criminal laws by courts, legislators, and the justice system professionals. Elder abuse assumes different forms, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, and abandonment. Forms often co-occur in a variety of settings. This presentation explores key ethical conundrums emerging when different professions address elder abuse. Specifically examined is how the ethical principles of autonomy and non-maleficence conflict with mandatory reporting laws, for example, if their purpose is to incarcerate older offenders who are ill and vulnerable serving lengthy mandated prison terms. The presentation also explores the rights of perpetrators, including how rights of crime victims are weighed against those of perpetrators in a just society.

Abstract:
Abstract This study examines the protective function of caregiving resilience and caregiving self-efficacy for elder abuse. A convenient sample of 600 family caregivers of community dwelling older Chinese in Hong Kong were individually interviewed. Participants were assessed on the caregiving context, care recipient physical functioning and behavioral problems, perceived caregiver stress, neurotic personality, caregiving self-efficacy and resilience. Past year elder abuse was assessed using Revised Conflict Tactic Scale and Older Adult Financial Exploitation. Elder abuse is common in this sample: 7.5, 11.5, 24 per cent reported physical, psychological, and financial abuse respectively. Injuries were reported in 2.3% of the sample. Hierarchical linear regression analysis was conducted. Number of co-residing days and hours of care provided per week were entered into Model One; Care recipient physical functioning, behavioral problems, and caregiver stress were entered into Model Two; Caregiver resilience and caregiving self-efficacy were entered into Model Three. Care recipient behavioral problems and caregiver stress were prominent factors associated with abuse across all models. With the exception of physical abuse, caregiver resilience buffered the effects of care recipient behavioral problems and caregiver stress on all forms of elder abuse. No such effect was observed for caregiving self-efficacy. Intervention efforts aiming at fostering caregiver resilience could potentially prevent elder abuse.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis paper presents results from a comparative project on the implementation of elder-care in France and Sweden. The transition to requiring care is understood as a process, and elder-care is seen as a part of a more general organisation of social care that reflects different welfare traditions. An overview of elder-care on the institutional level in the two countries is supplemented by case studies from the perspective of older people which identify ways of co-operation between actors, such as public eldercare providers, family members and help provided by profit and non-profit organisations. The interviews include approximately 20 older persons in each country as well as a small number of administrators and adult children. The study sheds light on how policies are implemented on the local level and puts the focus on who actually does what and when for older persons with care needs. The different roles played by the state, the family, the market and civil society are examined. Family members in France take on a more active role both as co-ordinators of care and as actual caregivers. The study shows that gender and social class remain associated with caring but that such differences are much larger in France than in Sweden.

Abstract:
<p>Adolescence is a dynamic and complex period in any society, but within the Aboriginal population this time is one of significant social pressures, critical decisions, and struggles to emerge healthy. The Positive Leadership, Legacy, Lifestyles, Attitudes, and Activities for Aboriginal Youth (PL3A3Y) project created youth and Elder teams to explore cultural practices that may inform the youth’s paths to living well. Using a community-based participatory research approach, Elder–youth dyads developed and delivered five modules to 78 students at a local elementary school in response to the research question: What are the critical components of a “Living Well” healing initiative for Aboriginal youth? Through a 4-step process that included engagement, module creation, co-delivery, and knowledge sharing, the project’s community-based research team innovatively and using culturally appropriate approaches brought forward critical topics of Leaders and Leadership, Legacy, Lifestyles, Attitudes, and Activities. Not only did the Elder–youth dyads develop a series of highly relevant, creative, useful products that were shared extensively with youth in the community, but the experience became a culturally appropriate leadership development opportunity for the youth researchers. The involvement of Elder–youth teams was a strength in linking past to present and in jointly envisioning a positive, healthier future for Aboriginal youth. With youth as co-researchers, the Elders as partners were highly effective in the development and delivery of culturally relevant teachings and knowledge that strengthened youth’s ability to achieve holistic personal and community wellness.<strong></strong></p>

James Edward Smith's interest in botany led him to enter medicine at Edinburgh in 1781. Smith was continuing his medical studies in London when Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) suggested to him that he should purchase the collection of the famous Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus that had just been offered to Banks. Smith bought the Linnean Collection and Library in 1784. In 1786 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Leiden. In 1788 Smith, with two associates, founded the Linnean Society of London and became President for life. Smith turned from medicine to natural history as a lecturer and writer. During his lifetime he produced numerous botanical works of high value, including The English Flora (1824-28), and he did much to popularize botany.

Abstract:
Human vanity always drives us to elevate the ordinary. “He put a feather in his cap and called it macaroni…. Yankee doodle dandy.” The Oxford English Dictionary gives the appropriate definition (not pasta in this case) as “an exquisite of a class which arose in England about 1760 and consisted of young men who had traveled and affected the tastes and fashions prevalent in continental society … a fop.” In a standard Renaissance version of this universal tendency, scholars translated their common names into the ancient tongues of a classical world that had, in their firm conviction, learned everything worth knowing. Thus, Georg Bauer (literally George the farmer), became Georgius Agricola (the same, but in Latin) and published, under this prettified name, the first great geological treatise (De natura fossilium plus four shorter works) in 1546. But Philipp Schwartzerd (Mr. black earth) tried to conquer his cultivator by reinventing himself in even classier Greek–becoming Philipp Melanchthon (the same Mr. black earth in Athenian splendor), the right-hand man of Martin Luther and the Reformation.

Abstract:
Background: Tuberculosis, a chronic disease causing high morbidity and mortality with multiple host related and socio-demographic risk factors. Incidence is 3-4 times among in diabetics. HIV is considered to be a most powerful risk factor other being malnutrition, Tubercular contacts, smoking habits and alcoholism. Many ecological and societal threats increase a vulnerability to infection and succession of the disease. Objective was to study and compare various clinico-radiological presentations and clinical risk factors for pulmonary tuberculosis in the young (<50yrs) and elderly (>50yrs) patients. Methods: Total 300 pulmonary tuberculosis patients each admitted in hospital during 1999 (group ‘A’) and 2016 (group ‘B’) respectively were included in our study. Socio-demographic risk factors and presence of any existing co morbidities and clinical as well radiological presentation data were evaluated. Results: Majority patients in both group ‘A’ and ‘B’ were males (67% and 61.3%), younger (71.3% and 63.3%) patients. Elder patients had more smokers in both groups (48.8% and 33.6%). COPD trends seems to be receding in group ‘B’ as compared to group ‘A’ in younger (6.3% vs. 8.9%) as well elder (13.6% vs. 29.1%) but on the contrary lifestyle disease trends like DM increased in group ‘B’ than group ‘A’ patients more in elder subgroup (30% vs. 9.3%). HIV infected was more in younger 2.1 % (elder 0.9%) group ‘B’ patients. Haemoptysis (17.8% and 18.6% vs. 13.7% and 9.1%) and cough (~87% vs. ~85%) were almost similar but fever (~90% vs. ~65%) was seen significantly higher in the young patients. Radiologically bilateral upper lobe cavitations (15%-30%) was a higher in group A patients as compared to negligible less than ~3% cavitations in group B, on the contrary infiltrations (15%-32%) was more in group B.Conclusions: Young adults are more likely to have fever while haemoptysis cough and advanced lung field involvement is more common in elderly. Elderly patients had a higher number of co-morbidities like COPD and DM. The present study reveals that various demographic, socioeconomic and clinical risk factors have a potential role in causation/augmentation of pulmonary tuberculosis hence life style modification, prevention and timely management of these risk factors could be helpful to reduce the burden of disease.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe population of South Korea is ageing rapidly and government provision for older people is meagre. Hence the erosion of traditional family support for older people is of much concern. Yet relatively little is known about the actual financial status of elderly Koreans or the amount of economic support they receive from children. This paper addresses these issues using data from the 2006 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. We find that almost 70 per cent of Koreans aged 65 or more years received financial transfers from children and that the transfers accounted for about a quarter of an average elder's income. While over 60 per cent of elders would be poor without private transfers, children's transfers substantially mitigate elder poverty, filling about one-quarter of the poverty gap. Furthermore, children's transfers tend to be proportionally larger to low-income parents, so elder income inequality is reduced by the transfers. Over 40 per cent of elders lived with a child and co-residence helps reduce elder poverty. By showing that Korean children still play a crucial role in providing financial old-age security, we demonstrate how important it is for the Korean government to design old-age policies that preserve the incentives for private assistance. This snapshot of today's Korea also has implications for other rapidly changing Asian countries that are following a similar trajectory.

Abstract:
This paper situates Hume's views on animals in the context of the Scottish Enlightenment by contrasting them with the views of Adam Smith. While Smith is more central to the philosophical establishment of the Scottish Enlightenment, their views on morals resemble each other greatly and both think that the analogies between humans and non-human animals are useful for thinking about morals. Their estimation of the nature and extent of those analogies, however, differ widely from one another. This has been historically obscured by the fact that in no single work does Smith precisely detail what he thinks non-human animals are capable of. I argue that Smith thinks non-human animal minds are different in kind from human minds. This is evident from Smith's view of how language facilitates and co-creates certain aspects of human cognition. Hume, by contrast, seems to hold that non-human animal minds differ merely by degree from human minds. After reconstructing Smith's view, I contrast it with Hume's, providing historical context to show how Hume falls outside the mainstream on this issue and Smith within it. Their views on animals reflect, broadly, their standing with respect to the wider Scottish philosophical community.

Abstract:
Aloe marlothii Berger (1905: 87) (Asphodelaceae subfam. Alooideae) (Fig. 1), a single-stemmed, tree-like aloe, occurs widespread in northeastern South Africa and adjacent parts of Botswana, for example near Lobatse in the southeast of the country from where it was originally described (Fig. 2), Zimbabwe, and Mozambique (see maps in Klopper & Smith 2010: 92, Fig. 32 and Van Wyk & Smith 2014: 68). Wherever A. marlothii co-occurs with other species of Aloe Linnaeus (1753: 319), hybrids are produced (Reynolds 1950, Smith & Figueiredo 2015). Aloe globuligemma Pole-Evans (1915: 30, Plates X [Figs 1 and 2] and XI [Figs 1, 2, and 3]) (Fig. 3), a stemless, medium-sized aloe, is restricted to the more subtropical parts of northeastern South Africa, southern Zimbabwe, and Mozambique (see map in Van Wyk & Smith 2014: 158). Where these two species, A. globuligemma and A. marlothii, co-occur, for example at Lebowakgomo, about 50 km southeast of Polokwane, the capital of South Africa’s Limpopo province, a bewildering range of striking hybrids with considerable horticultural potential are found (Reynolds 1950: 446, 484, Retief 2018). This hybrid also occurs a bit further south of the Lebowakgomo location, as well as elsewhere in the Limpopo province, in Sekhukhuneland in the vicinity of Steelpoort and Ohrigstad.

Abstract:
Abstract Understanding the co-occurrence or overlap among multiple forms of elder abuse and neglect (EAN) is important for designing effective interventions. This paper reports patterns of family caregiver’s daily behaviors related to physical assault, psychological mistreatment, and neglect. Majority of participants self-reported at least one EAN behavior (74%), with most reporting using multiple forms of EAN over the 21-day period (52%). On a given day, psychological mistreatment and neglect were more likely to happen in isolation, while physical assault was more likely to co-occur with psychological mistreatment. The mixed model’s intra-class coefficient suggests the daily context, rather than personal characteristics, explain the variance in the use of EAN. These findings highlight the importance of never minimizing a single event of EAN reported in clinical practice, give the high rate of polyvictimization, and reinforces the need to understand why caregivers use one form of EAN over another on a given day.

Abstract:
Abstract In response to difficulties faced by families in caring for the aged, the government of Taiwan launched a foreign live-in caregiver programme in 1992. This paper draws upon literature on family, domestic work and motives for caregiving to examine how the long-term co-residence of migrant live-in elder care-workers reconfigures Taiwanese families. Our analysis, based on in-depth interviews conducted in the summer of 2009 with 20 Vietnamese migrant live-in care-workers, uses the concept of ‘social family’ to document the close emotional and quasi-familial relationships between foreign care-workers and members of Taiwanese families. Narratives shed light on the dynamics of these relationships and show the limitations of the concept. The inherent asymmetrical employer-employee power relationship remains, while workers constantly negotiate contradictory feelings and positions in the intimate sphere of the employers’ private homes. This paper emphasizes the mutual dependency that migrants experience as both workers and members of a new family. Rather than being seen as cheap, disposable labour, migrants become indispensable to the families. It is this dependency and intimacy that make them part of the family, but also continues to make them vulnerable to abuse.

Abstract:
Abstract Studies with clinic samples have found approximately 50% of family caregivers self-report engaging in abusive and neglectful acts towards the person with dementia whom they assist. Despite this, interventions to reduce and prevent elder abuse and neglect in dementia caregiving are lacking. To develop targeted interventions, the field still has much to learn about what happens during single incidents of elder abuse and neglect including (1) the types of tactics used (2) contextually-based risk/protective factors and (3) circumstances surrounding acts. This symposium will advance discussions on these topics through presentation of pilot data from a micro-longitudinal study on abuse and neglect within dementia family caregiving. Micro-longitudinal methods, such as daily diary studies, rely on intensive longitudinal measures over shorter periods of time. This approach can better ascertain ecologically-valid factors and identify temporal patterning between variables than traditional longitudinal and cross-sectional methods. First, we will provide an overview of the pilot project with family caregivers (N=50) completing diaries for 21 days. The second presenter will discuss data on the co-occurrence of different types of elder abuse and neglect as they manifest in daily lives of family caregivers, and lead discussion on measurement considerations. The next presenter will discuss data on contextually-based risk and protective factors for abuse and neglect that occur during daily caregiving activities. The final presentation will discuss findings on caregivers’ perceptions of the circumstances surrounding abusive and neglectful behaviors. Discussion will focus on how these findings, and methods, can be used to advance intervention development for the field.

ABSTRACTThis article aims to understand how Eastern and Western philosophies shape the perspectives of scholars and practitioners in framing co-opetition (i.e., the coexistence of competition and cooperation) in distinctive manners and, in turn, how such distinctions shape the behavioral patterns of co-opetition. We disentangle the constructs of competition and cooperation and their coexistence as proposed by three Chinese schools of thought (i.e., Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism) and three Western philosophers (i.e., Immanuel Kant, Georg W. F. Hegel, and Adam Smith). Based on this groundwork, we unveil four comparative philosophical logics used to address the essence of co-opetition (i.e., either/or, both/and, both/or, and either/and). In addition, we apply such East-meeting-West linkages to a typology of co-opetition strategies.

Abstract:
This paper was written in response to a request by the editors of the AP: Online Journal of Public Archaeology, Jaime Almansa Sánchez and Elena Papagiannopoulou, for Claire Smith to write on the future of public archaeology in Australia. In Australia, public archaeology focusses on high profile colonial sites such as The Rocks in Sydney (Karskens 1999) and Port Arthur in Tasmania (Steele et al. 2007; Frew 2012), tourism (e.g. Cole and Wallis 2019) or enhancing school curricula (Nichols et al. 2005; Owens and Steele 2005). However, given her decades-long relationships with Jawoyn and Ngadjuri people (Smith 1999; Smith et al. 2016; Smith et al. 2020), Claire Smith decided that a useful way of approaching this topic would be to obtain Indigenous views on the subject. Accordingly, she contacted the Aboriginal co-authors of this article and invited them to co-author the paper. The possibility to write in free form was a boon. The ‘conversation’ format we settled on was designed to facilitate the voices of individuals, to present a range of Indigenous views, to allow people to express their views frankly, and to deal with the constraints of people being located in different parts of Australia as well as occasional lock-downs due to COVID-19. We decided on five topics/questions that would be the basis of the conversation. Each Aboriginal author gave their views either by email or by phone. These views were interwoven into a ‘conversation’. The language has been edited lightly for clarity and to simulate a real-life conversation. The final text was approved by all authors.

Abstract:
This article explores social and political dimensions associated with providing care for elders in South Korea. We look at changes in welfare policy since the 1980s and discuss the emergence of a long-term care insurance program in Korea similar to the program promulgated in Japan in 2000. We argue that while the status of South Korean elderly is undergoing change as new policies provide opportunities for elders to move from positions of dependency to increased independence as consumers of health care services, there are some reasons for concern. The capacity of elders to function as consumers remains tied to the fact family members or elders themselves must pay supplements to their health insurance premiums as well as significant co-payments for services rendered, and government policies retain a strong bias toward requiring in-home, family-centered care of frail and bedfast elders.

Abstract:
Mississippi's two largest tomato-growing areas are in Smith and George Counties. The Truck Crops Branch Experiment Station in Crystal Springs is the closest vegetable research site to Smith County but does not share the same soil type. Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) reduces fruit yield and marketability, and its incidence appears to be increasing in the state. The objectives of this trial were 1) to determine fruit yield and TSWV incidence in tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) grown in central Mississippi, and 2) compare yield and relative yield among cultivars and between locations. Tomato seedlings were transplanted to the field in April 2004 in Smith and Copiah County plots. Production practices included raised beds, black plastic mulch, drip irrigation, and fertilizer applied pre-plant and as side-dressings based on soil test and regionally recommended practices. TSWV incidence was recorded in each plot in Smith Co. in June 2004. In both locations, `Amelia' and `Mountain Spring' were among the top yielding entries. In Smith, the top entries also included `BHN 543' and two commercial experimental entries. In Copiah, `Florida 47 R', `Biltmore', `Mountain Fresh', and `BHN 543' also produced high marketable yields. `Florida 47R', `Bush Celebrity', and `Mountain Fresh' were among the poorest yielding varieties in Smith County. Incidence of TSWV was not formally rated in Copiah. In Smith, percent symptomatic plants per plot were negatively correlated with yield. Symptoms were found on entries reportedly resistant or tolerant to TSWV.

Abstract:
This research with three Indigenous youth and their families is an intergenerational narrative inquiry around experiences of belonging and identity making. Pulling forward teachings from Indigenous Elder Francis Whiskeyjack, a metaphor of “education as ceremony” is juxtaposed with the ceremonies of “schooling” (Greene, 2001). Thinking with stories lived and told by the youth and their families, I retell stories as a teacher, mother, and now, teacher educator. Experiencing personal and practical shifts to my teaching and learning, I reconsider the ceremonies of “schooling.” This study offers possibilities for how educators might co-compose more relational and educative (Dewey, 1938) experiences in schools.
