Abstract:
Part of the Problem, Part of the Solution unleashes religion's true potential to do good by bridging the modern divide between religion and an ever pervasive secular society, a notion often loathed by individuals on both sides of the religious aisle. As noted scholars such as Huston Smith, Karen Armstrong, Rosemary Radford Reuther, Harvey Cox, and Seyyed Hossein Nasr explain throughout the conversations related in this text, people of varied and conflicting faiths can come together to engage in civil, useful dialogue, and members of quite varied religious traditions can work together for the b

Abstract:
This chapter explores the role of the state in the formation of public opinion. Both Smith and Rousseau recognized the urgency of this endeavor; both likewise recognized the threat that such a project could pose to personal liberty and popular sovereignty. However, while they framed the problem similarly, their responses to it differed in two ways. First, the stakes were greater for Rousseau: Without civic virtue, there could be no political freedom. For Smith, by contrast, moral turpitude did not automatically undermine the social fabric. The second difference—related to the first—lies in the

Abstract:
Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is characterized by prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, characteristic face, genital and distal limb anomalies, and intellectual disability. There is a weak correlation between the metabolic disturbances with clinical severity and with genotype, but wide ranges exist within each group. SLOS is infrequently described in adults. The associated malformations are usually treated in infancy and childhood and have only limited influences in adulthood. Main physical problems are scoliosis and pectus formation, sun sensitivity, and disturbed hearing and vision.

Abstract:
This article proposes an entirely different understanding of the goals of cultural sociology, arguing that the subject position of the “spectator” should replace that of the “social scientist.” It contends that cultural sociology should aspire for fidelity—to moods and experiences, to locations and dramas, and to the truth of experience—and that this fidelity can be achieved through witnessing. In order to build the case for a new kind of cultural sociology, the article cites the works of Adam Smith, and especially his theory of social morality founded on the figure of the “impartial spectator

The third chapter asks how these developments informed the making of American art in the immediate postwar years. The first section attends to contemporary announcements that modernism had reached a formal impasse. Drawing on a number of unpublished lectures on space and the Italian painter Corrado Cagli, the second section reveals Olson to have imagined a ‘spatial modernism’ that sought to solve the problem of a formal ne plus ultra whilst actively imagining a more ‘modest’ postwar ethic. In following sections this new spatial ethic and aesthetic is shown not to have been unique to Olson but

This chapter is devoted to explaining the moral significance of what Adam Smith calls the “natural sentiments.” The significance of the natural sentiments is illustrated by their role in extended case studies. They help us understand Smith’s criticism of David Hume’s account of the origin and morality of justice. It turns that Smith’s criticism of Hume is Humean in spirit, and solves conceptual problems left by Hume. This chapter also explains the difference between natural sentiments and moral sentiments. Despite the undeniable significance of feelings in his moral theory, Smith should not be
