SMAC mimetic compounds (SMCs) are small molecule antagonists of the Inhibitor of Apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins. Binding of SMCs to the IAPs results in the sensitization of cancer cells to apoptosis in the presence of death ligands, such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). I hypothesize that type I interferon (IFN) stimulation in cancer cells and in immune cells leads to the production of TNFα, which can then synergize with SMCs to kill cancer cells. This thesis presents the results of a combination of new observations with the Parkes telescope of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with an Australia Telescope Compact Array aperture synthesis mosaic.
