Smoking during pregnancy is not only harmful to the mother, but the unborn baby as well. In East Tennessee, smoking rates during pregnancy are more than three times the national average. Smoking cessation interventions have been shown to assist in lowering smoking levels during pregnancy. Research shows that smokers compared to non-smokers preferentially attend to smoking-related stimuli relative to neutral stimuli, referred to as cognitive bias. The hallmark measures employed to assess cognitive bias are the visual probe and modified Stroop tasks. In 1999, the Federal Government sued the tobacco companies in an attempt to recover expenses used to treat diseases caused by smoking. The 2006 verdict required the dissemination of corrective statements intended to inform the public of the dangers of smoking. This study analyzes smokers' perceptions of these statements.
