Abstract:
Real-time neural spike detection is an important step in understanding neurological activities and developing brain-silicon interfaces. Recent approaches exploit minimally invasive sensing techniques based on implanted complementary metal-oxide semiconductors (CMOS) multi transistors arrays (MTAs) that limit the damage of the neural tissue and provide high spatial resolution. Unfortunately, MTAs result in low signal-to-noise ratios due to the weak capacitive coupling between the nearby neurons and the sensor and the high noise power coming from the analog front-end. In this paper we investigate the performance achievable by using spike detection algorithms for MTAs, based on some variants of the smoothed non-linear energy operator (SNEO). We show that detection performance benefits from the correlation of the signals detected by the MTA pixels, but degrades when a high firing rate of neurons occurs. We present and compare different approaches and noise estimation techniques for the SNEO, aimed at increasing the detection accuracy at low SNR and making it less dependent on neurons firing rates. The algorithms are tested by using synthetic neural signals obtained with a modified version of NEUROCUBE generator. The proposed approaches outperform the SNEO, showing a more than 20% increase on averaged sensitivity at 0 dB and reduced dependence on the neuronal firing rate.

Abstract:
Numerous experiments require low latencies in the detection and processing of the neural brain activity to be feasible, in the order of a few milliseconds from action to reaction. In this paper, a design for sub-millisecond detection and communication of the spiking activity detected by an array of 32 intracortical microelectrodes is presented, exploiting the real-time processing provided by Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The design is embedded in the commercially available RHS stimulation/recording controller from Intan Technologies, that allows recording intracortical signals and performing IntraCortical MicroStimulation (ICMS). The Spike Detector (SD) is based on the Smoothed Nonlinear Energy Operator (SNEO) and includes a novel approach to estimate an RMS-based firing-rate-independent threshold, that can be tuned to fine detect both the single Action Potential (AP) and Multi Unit Activity (MUA). A low-latency SD together with the ICMS capability, creates a powerful tool for Brain-Computer-Interface (BCI) closed-loop experiments relying on the neuronal activity-dependent stimulation. The design also includes: A third order Butterworth high-pass IIR filter and a Savitzky-Golay polynomial fitting; a privileged fast USB connection to stream the detected spikes to a host computer and a sub-milliseconds latency Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter (UART) protocol communication to send detections and receive ICMS triggers. The source code and the instruction of the project can be found on GitHub.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT SNEV (Prp19, Pso4, NMP200) is a nuclear matrix protein known to be involved in pre-mRNA splicing, ubiquitylation, and DNA repair. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells, SNEV overexpression delayed the onset of replicative senescence. Here we analyzed the function of the mouse SNEV gene in vivo by employing homologous recombination in mice and conclude that SNEV is indispensable for early mouse development. Mutant preimplantation embryos initiated blastocyst formation but died shortly thereafter. Outgrowth of SNEV-null blastocysts showed a lack of proliferation of cells of the inner cell mass, which subsequently underwent cell death. While SNEV-heterozygous mice showed no overt phenotype, heterozygous mouse embryonic fibroblast cell lines with reduced SNEV levels displayed a decreased proliferative potential in vitro. Our experiments demonstrate that the SNEV protein is essential, functionally nonredundant, and indispensable for mouse development.

Abstract:
4526 Background: LNEC is a rare, poorly characterized entity morphologically resembling small cell NEC of the urothelial tract (SNEC). Methods: Pure and partial LNEC and SNEC cases were identified by histopathologic re-review; clinical outcomes were compared. A subset was sequenced with MSK-IMPACT (279-505 genes). Results: Between 1992-2020, 43 patients (pts) with LNEC were identified (42 bladder, 1 upper tract); 19 (44%) had concomitant SNEC. LNEC cases were compared to 192 SNEC without LNEC (SNEC-only) (Table 1). Compared to SNEC-only pts, LNEC pts experienced longer overall survival (OS), adjusting for age and M0 vs M1 (median OS not reached vs 22.4 months [mos]; HR 0.34, 95% CI 0.16-0.74, p =.006). Neoadjuvant chemo (NAC) use increased over time. Pathologic response rate (<ypT2N0) after NAC was 25% for LNEC and 50% for SNEC-only (p =.13); the ypT0N0 rate was 25% for LNEC and 40% for SNEC-only (p =.52). Perioperative chemo did not improve OS compared to surgery alone in LNEC, adjusting for age and concurrent SNEC (HR 1.46, 95% CI 0.12-17.5, p =.76), but was associated with longer OS among SNEC-only pts (n = 98; HR 0.39, 95% CI 0.22-0.69, p =.001). Two M1 LNEC pts received immunotherapy (IO) in the first-line: 1 atezolizumab, 1 atezolizumab + chemo. Both remained free of progression on IO at a follow-up of 20 and 12 mos, respectively. Of 18 sequenced LNEC tumors, 89% had TERT promoter alterations (alts), similar to 85% seen in 52 SNEC tumors. All LNEC tumors had alts of TP53 or RB1, and 10 (56%) had both. Median tumor mutational burden (TMB) was 14 (IQR 8-38) in LNEC and 30 (IQR 15-55) in SNEC. Epigenetic modifiers were altered in 78% LNEC and 79% SNEC. Two LNEC pts had ERCC2 alts and received platinum chemo; both were alive at last follow-up from NEC diagnosis of 30.7-39.1 mos. Conclusions: LNEC pts experienced longer OS compared to pts with SNEC-only in this cohort, but did not appear more chemo-sensitive. Genomic profiles of LNEC and SNEC-only tumors were similar; TERT promoter mutations suggest a potential urothelial precursor. Further investigation of IO for LNEC is warranted.[Table: see text]

Abstract:
Background: Innovative technologies, such as the SNOO Smart Sleeper responsive bassinet (SNOO), may offer support to neonatal clinicians in their work environment. Purpose: The objectives of this study were to describe the experiences of clinicians when using the SNOO in their clinical settings, including their perceptions of the SNOO on the quality of infant care and their work environment. Methods: A retrospective, secondary analysis was conducted using 2021 survey data across 44 hospitals participating in the SNOO donation program. Respondents included 204 clinicians, predominantly neonatal nurses. Results: The SNOO was used in a variety of clinical scenarios, including with fussy, preterm, and healthy full-term infants, as well as substance-exposed infants experiencing withdrawal. The SNOO was perceived as a driver of positive infant and parent experiences, including enhanced quality of care. Respondents perceived the SNOO as providing them with support in their daily caring for newborns, reducing their stress, and helping them in lieu of hospital volunteers. Clinicians reported an average time savings of 2.2 hours per shift. Implications for Practice and Research: Results from this study provide evidence for future evaluation of the SNOO as a technology for hospitals to adopt to improve neonatal clinician satisfaction and retention, as well as improve the quality of patient care and parental satisfaction.

Abstract:
Background/Objectives: Inadequate cardiovascular adaptation during pregnancy impairs endothelial function and vascular resistance, contributing to complications such as pre-eclampsia (PE) and gestational hypertension (GH). Neprilysin (NEP), a protease involved in vascular regulation, has been linked to PE, but its role in endothelial function and vascular adaptation remains unclear. This pilot study investigates the associations between soluble neprilysin (sNEP) and markers of vascular and renal function in high-risk pregnancies without PE. Methods: Observed parameters were analyzed in 29 high-risk pregnant women across early, mid-, and late pregnancy. sNEP levels were analyzed alongside body mass index (BMI), endothelial dysfunction (ADMA), arterial stiffness (pulse wave velocity, PWV), retinal microvasculature (central retinal arteriolar and venular equivalents, CRAE and CRVE), and kidney function markers. The impact of gestational hypertension (GH) and prior smoking on sNEP levels was also evaluated. Results: In early and mid-pregnancy, sNEP was inversely associated with BMI. During mid-pregnancy, sNEP showed a positive correlation with CRAE and an inverse correlation with PWV, suggesting reduced arterial stiffness. By late pregnancy, sNEP was positively associated with glomerular filtration rate and inversely correlated with creatinine and protein levels, reflecting improved kidney function. Women with GH exhibited elevated sNEP, while former smokers had lower sNEP levels in early pregnancy. Conclusions: These findings suggest that sNEP plays a role in vascular and renal adaption during pregnancy, offering new perspectives on vascular tone regulation in high-risk pregnancies. Further research is needed to clarify these mechanisms and their clinical relevance.

Abstract:
As a common social network, the SNEM plays an important role in emergency management. Magnitude emergencies are characterized by high complexity and uncertainty, and it is impossible to rely on the government for emergency management alone. We should absorb multiple subjects to build the SNEM and carry out extensive emergency mobilization in the whole society. The SNEM can integrate resources, gather consensus, promote participation, and reduce risks. The analysis of the types, generation mechanism, subject behavior, and strategy selection of the SNEM aid in adopting appropriate mobilization strategy based on magnitude emergencies, achieving the adaptation of the SNEM and emergency scenarios. By constructing the evolutionary game model of the SNEM for magnitude emergencies, taking China as an empirical sample, this paper explores the behavior evolution law and stable strategy of the government, social organizations, and the public. The results showed that the symbiotic SNEM with a positive response of social organizations and the public under the path of high-intensity mobilization by the government is the best strategy combination, and it is conducive to maximizing the emergency joint force.

Abstract:
Radioactive isotopes are present at some level in all materials in our environment. Detection of these isotopes by conventional means can be difficult if they decay very slowly (have a long half-life). Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) systems are actually designed to measure extremely low levels or such isotopes. Such measurements are often useful for dating geological processes and archaeological artifacts or tracing chemical pathways through complex systems. In the search for very rare processes such as neutrinoless double beta decay, the presence of very low levels of radioactive material can interfere with the measurement process. Therefore, materials used to build the experimental equipment have to contain as few radioactive isotopes as possible. Neutrinoless double beta decay (NDBD) is of interest for understanding whether the neutrinos are Dirac or Majorana particles. SNO+ and nEXO are among the experiments at SNO Lab, located in Sudbury, Canada for the detection of neutrinos and other extremely weak physical processes. The SNO+ detector is a large 12m diameter spherical scintillation counter which will be able to study low energy solar, geo- and reactor neutrinos, as well as being able to conduct supernova searches. This detector was built with materials with very low radioactivity such as the organic liquid, Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB), the scintillation fluid in which the radioactivity was measured in earlier scintillation detectors. For NSBD measurements, the SNO+ experiment will add tellurium-130 to the LAB; In order to fully mix the 130Te into the LAB, the liquid 1, 2 Butanediol has been selected as a chelating agent to which the atoms of 130Te can be added. This project describes the measurement of the 14C content of the 1, 2 Butanediol which confirmed its suitability for use in the NDBD experiment. nEXO is the next in a series of experiments dedicated to the search for NDBD in Xenon-136. The nEXO detector is a time projection chamber (TPC) filled with 5000 kg of liquid Xe. One major source of reduction in sensitivity of this detector is the radioactive decay of trace amounts of uranium and thorium isotopes naturally present the construction materials. In order to assess the quantity of these isotopes in the copper used to make the electrodes in the TPC, samples of the copper to be used in the chamber were analyzed using AMS. In this measurement, a better source of copper was found.

This report is about using a wireless communication technology called NFC (Near Field Communication) when communicating between a mobile phone using an Android operating system and a NFC reader called ACR122U. The purpose of this project is to: Select an Android phone which supports NFC. Create an application that runs on the Android mobile phone and which shall send a password via NFC. Create a program which will run on a PC running Windows 7 and which will handle ACR122U. Explain the gathered knowledge in this document so that others may more readily be able to work with NFC. The following questions will be answered in this report: Which Android mobile phone should be used when developing an application which will communicate via NFC? What is required when developing an application that can communicate via NFC? Action research is the research method that was used when searching for answers to the questions above. This means the research is done by reading about the subject, implementing one or more solutions in order to find a working solution and then documenting the results. The implementation of the software on the mobile phone was done with a lot of help from the Android Developers website. When developing the software to be used by the computer to handle ACR122U a lot of research was made. A demo application and a java library called “nfctools” made by the German company GrundID GmbH were very useful when trying to figure out how the communication works. The program that handles ACR122U was developed through alternating between reading and testing different solutions. The mobile phone that was chosen during this project is Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.0.The software that handles ACR122U needs to handle these things: Sending data via USB to ACR122U – This was done using a class called “ModWinsCard” which came with an NFC development package. An ACR122U Pseudo-APDU (Application Protocol Data Unit) command. Some of ACR122U’s NFC controller (PN532) commands. Some parts of the NFC layers: NDEF (NFC Data Exchange Format), SNEP (Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol) and LLCP (Logical Link Control Protocol). It is important to know which NFC layers are implemented in the devices that are to communicate with each other via NFC. The same layers must be used when packing and unpacking data.

Abstract:
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory solved the solar neutrino problem, confirming neutri- nos have non-zero masses. Massive neutrinos raise questions about the nature of neutrinos, implying physics beyond the standard model and potentially a solution to the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is be- ing upgraded, with the goal of probing the nature of neutrino masses. The experiment will also study reactor, geo, supernovae and solar neutrinos. The upgrade is characterised by changing the target mass from heavy water to scintillator. Using scintillator allows for the lowering of the energy threshold, but this increases sensitivity to backgrounds. To meet the requirements of the physics on detector performance, a detailed optical calibration is needed. Due to increased background sensitivity, a new external LED-based calibration system has been developed and the existing laser calibration system has been modified to meet radiopurity requirements. This thesis describes the the development and imple- mentation of both of these calibration systems. With a study of the potential use of the LED system to monitor the detector's structure, enabling a better definition of the fiducial volume by reducing the effects of external backgrounds. An assessment of the impact of these systems on the detector performance will be presented.

Abstract:
The Super-K experiment determined that neutrinos are massive particles by observing the oscillation of atmospheric neutrinos. The SNO experiment confirmed this measurement by observing neutrinos from the Sun. The SNO+ experiment is intended to study the nature of neutrino masses by replacing the heavy water used in SNO with scintillator. The main goal of the experiment is to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay within 130Te. The SNO+ detector is much more sensitive to radioactive contamination than the SNO experiment. For this reason an external LED calibration system has been developed so the detector can be calibrated without risking contamination of the scintillator volume. This thesis describes the commissioning of this calibration system and its performance during the water phase of SNO+. The scintillator volume is separated from the surrounding detector via an acrylic vessel. As scintillator is less dense than water the position of the vessel is expected to shift throughout the lifetime of SNO+. A method to determine the position of the vessel using the external LED system is detailed as well as its performance. A measurement of the scattering length of the water surrounding the acrylic vessel using the same LED system is also presented. Calibration of the detector will also be performed using sources deployed within the vessel, and a study on the angular distribution of light from these sources and the effect of hardware upgrades is also presented. During the lifetime of the SNO+ experiment, the detector will be sensitive to neutrinos emitted from a supernovae within the Milky Way. A software framework was developed to accurately simulate the main interaction channels for supernova neutrinos within SNO+. The software was used to determine the burst trigger effciency during the water phase as well as a procedure to follow in the case of the burst. One outstanding problem in the field of neutrino physics is the neutrino mass hierarchy; whether there are two heavy and one light or two light and one heavy neutrino mass eigenstates. Neutrinos from a supernova burst may be able to solve this problem. A simple study is performed to determine the sensitivity of various detectors. The same analysis is performed using the aforementioned software to explore any systematic effects which may alter the sensitivity.

Abstract:
We compare analytic predictions of supernova light curves with recent high-quality data from SN2011fe (Ia), KSN2011b (Ia), and the Palomar Transient Factory and the La Silla-QUEST variability survey (LSQ) (Ia). Because of the steady, fast cadence of observations, KSN2011b provides unique new information on SNe Ia: the smoothness of the light curve, which is consistent with significant large-scale mixing during the explosion, possibly due to 3D effects (e.g., Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities), and provides support for a slowly varying leakage (mean opacity). For a more complex light curve (SN2008D, SN Ib), we separate the luminosity due to multiple causes and indicate the possibility of a radioactive plume. The early rise in luminosity is shown to be affected by the opacity (leakage rate) for thermal and non-thermal radiation. A general derivation of Arnett's rule again shows that it depends upon all processes heating the plasma, not just radioactive ones, so that SNe Ia will differ from SNe Ibc if the latter have multiple heating processes.

Abstract:
The main topic of this thesis concerns t-SNE, a dimensionality reduction technique that has gained much popularity for showing great capability of preserving well-separated clusters from a high-dimensional space. Our goal with this thesis is twofold. Firstly we give an introduction to the use of dimensionality reduction techniques in visualization and, following recent research, show that t-SNE in particular is successful at preserving well-separated clusters. Secondly, we perform a thorough series of experiments that give us the ability to draw conclusions about the quality of embeddings from running t-SNE on samples of data using different sampling techniques. We are comparing pure random sampling, random walk sampling and so-called hubness sampling on a dataset, attempting to find a sampling method that is consistently better at preserving local information than simple random sampling. Throughout our testing, a specific variant of random walk sampling distinguished itself as a better alternative to pure random sampling.

Abstract:
The aim of rapidly reconstructing high-fidelity, Synthetic Natural Environments (SNEs) may benefit from a deep learning algorithm: this paper explores how deep learning on virtual, or synthetic, terrain assets of aerial imagery can support the process of quickly and effectively recreating lifelike SNEs for military training, including serious games. Namely, a deep learning algorithm was trained on small hills, or berms, from a SNE, derived from real-world geospatial data. In turn, the deep learning algorithm’s level of classification was tested. Then, assets learned (i.e., classified) from the deep learning were transferred to a game engine for reconstruction. Ultimately, results suggest that deep learning will support automated population of highfidelity SNEs. Additionally, we identify constraints and possible solutions when utilising the commercial game engine of Unity for dynamic terrain generation.
