Abstract:
In the late 1940s, Pamela became an astute reader and critic of Snow’s work in progress. She learned of his working-class background in Leicester, his grammar school education and his academic success at Cambridge. As she became close emotionally to Snow, she felt increasingly estranged from Neil and began to spend less time with her husband and more time with Snow and his London literary friends, all of whom shared her belief that sterile Modernism was destroying the traditions of the English novel: social and psychological realism. Neil returned from the war unsettled and resentful of the in

Abstract:
Snow focuses on a class of beliefs that have been called ‘adaptive misbeliefs’—beliefs that are false or ungrounded, but nevertheless helpful for action—and argues that they are not epistemically justified by the greater pragmatic value they accrue for the believer. She then argues that this verdict remains even if the greater value is epistemic value rather than pragmatic value. This work is consonant with earlier work critical of epistemic consequentialism concerning epistemic trade-offs, but adds to it by rendering it plausible that there are actual cases of adaptive misbelief that instanti

Abstract:
In this chapter, the physics of wet granular matter is discussed. The practical significance of wet granular matter goes of course well beyond the construction of sand sculptures. Most industrial raw materials are solids and come in granular form, and the processes into which they feed involve their being mixed with liquids and agglomerated, conveyed, kneaded, or cast in moulds. For appropriately engineering these processes, including the minimization of energy consumption, a deep understanding of the mechanical properties of this class of materials is indispensable. Furthermore, if we want to
