Abstract:
Abstract The present paper aims at familiarizing readers with Ana Castillo’s reshaping of traditional female archetypes in her novel So Far from God. Not only does she remodel and enrich them, she also incorporates them into modern, contemporary life. In addition, all the female characters in the novel are drawn together towards Sofia, the all-encompassing self, the multiple Other.

Mather, Brian Scott. ""So Far from Home ..." : a Translation of Jacques Sternberg's "Si loin du monde ..."." PDXScholar, 2016. http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/3046.

Full text
Abstract:
This master's thesis comprises an English translation of Jacques Sternberg's "Si loin du monde ..." preceded by an introduction that addresses the translator's general theoretical approach to translation as well as an explanation and justification of specific choices made for this translation in particular. "Si loin du monde ..." is a short work of science fiction by Belgian author Jacques Sternberg that appeared in the collection Entre deux mondes incertains, published in 1957. It takes the form of a first-person narrative told from the perspective of an extra-terrestrial, who has been sent on a mission to study humanity and its environment and furtively make preparation for the arrival of his people on Earth. The section on theory sets out to find whether there exist absolute norms exterior to the subjectivity of the translator that regulate the act of translation. Three potential normative centers are proposed: text, author, and reader. The starting point when appraising text is the sourcier/cibliste dichotomy and the objection préjudicielle presented in Georges Mounin's Les belles infidèles. The objection préjudicielle is the claim that translation is theoretically impossible. The conclusion reached is that the text does not establish absolute norms of correspondence between the target text and the source text because there is no absolute meaning inherent in the text. When examining the author as a potential source of the norms of translation, Roland Barthe"s "La mort de l'auteur" is used to show that, since the meaning of a text is not ultimately determined by the author, neither can he be an absolute regulator of correspondence in translation. Finally, the reader is found to be a relative (not absolute) regulator of the norms of translation. This regulating role and the nature of its demands on the translator is explored through an application of the author/reader dialectic found in Sartre's Qu'est-ce que la littérature? It is concluded that there do not exist any absolute norms of translation exterior to the translator, and that the translator creates an aesthetic unity in the target text through adherence to norms that are ultimately founded in his own subjectivity.

Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för marknadsföring (MF), 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-66942.

Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of psychic distance has been thoroughly researched regarding its influence on the internationalization patterns of firms into foreign markets. Psychic distance has been determined by a plethora of existing literature as an inhibitor to trade; however, much of this research only takes on the perspective of the firm. The construct of psychic distance has primarily been examined on the supply side, while a lack of literature exists examining the impact of psychic distance from the consumer’s perspective. Furthermore, the academic world has devoted little attention to applying the psychic distance construct to e-commerce, especially in terms of retail. Due to the continuously rising significance of e-commerce, especially in terms of cross-border retail, understanding the way in which consumers perceive foreign international online vendors (IOVs) is essential to business success. This thesis contributes to the existing research regarding psychic distance, by seeking to answer the following research questions: "How do varying levels of perceived psychic distance impact the online purchasing behaviors of consumers?" and "How does the impact of perceived psychic distance on purchasing behaviors vary based on consumer’s nationality?". To answer these questions, empirical data is collected through the conduct of five focus groups of varying nationalities, each either containing consumers of French, German, Swedish, Russian or Chinese nationality. The analysis of empirical data is built upon a theoretical foundation using the conceptualization of distance defined by Dow & Karunaratna (2006), consumer nationality and retailer country of origin (COO). The findings of this thesis conclude that perceived psychic distance likely has somewhat of an influence on consumer online purchasing behaviors. However, factors such as development level of retailer COO, retailer COO familiarity, development level of consumer nationality, and consumer ethnocentrism have more measurable impacts on the purchasing behaviors of consumers in the online retail context.

Abstract:
Even though the analysis of DNA from archaeological bone comes with some major limitations, it constitutes the most directmeans of investigating prehistoric population dynamics. The interdisciplinary contextualization of genetic data with the archaeological and palaeoecological record helps to reconstruct past population histories and the demography of ancient populations. For South America, palaeogenetic studies have become increasingly important. Here we review the existing ancient DNA data from pre-Columbian individuals to assess their potential to contribute to our understanding of early South American population history. The spatial and temporal distribution of ancient South American populations analysed to date is very uneven and the data resolution of the analysed genetic markers is low. Nevertheless, the data suggest that there were population dynamic processes accompanying cultural development in Western South America. With the new methodologies and better sampling strategies employed in current paleogenetic projects and more effective interdisciplinary cooperations it will be soon possible to achieve a better understanding of the peopling of the continent and the succeeding population history.<br>Aún cuando el análisis de ADN de huesos arqueológicos tiene algunas grandes limitaciones, constituye la manera más directa de investigar eventos prehistóricos de dinámica poblacional.

Finsterbusch, Friederike. "Analysis of gene expression data from Massive Parallel Sequencing identifies so far uncharacterised regulators for meiosis with one candidate being fundamental for prophase I in male and female meiosis." Abstract:
Meiosis is a specialized division of germ cells in sexually reproducing organisms, which is a fundamental process with key implications for evolution and biodiversity. In two consecutive rounds of cell division, meiosis I and meiosis II, a normal, diploid set of chromosome is halved. From diploid mother cells haploid gametes are generated to create genetic individual cells. This genetic uniqueness is obtained during prophase of meiosis I by essential meiotic processes in meiotic recombination, as double strand break (DSB) formation and repair, formation of crossovers (CO) and holiday junctions (HJs). Checkpoint mechanisms ensure a smooth progress of these events. Despite extensive research key mechanisms are still not understood. Based on an analysis of Massive Parallel Sequencing (MPS) data I could identify 2 genes, Mcmdc2 and Prr19, with high implication in meiotic recombination. In the absence of Mcmdc2 both sexes are infertile and meiocytes arrest at a stage equivalent to mid-‐pachytene in wt. Investigations of the synaptonemal complex (SC) formation revealed severe defects suggesting a role for MCMDC2 in homology search. Moreover, MCMDC2 does not seem to be essential for DSB repair, as DSB markers of early and mid recombination nodules, like DMC1 and RPA, are decreased in oocytes. Nevertheless, late recombination nodules, which are positive for MutL homolog 1 (MLH1), do not form in both sexes. The absence of the asynapsis surveillance checkpoint mechanism in Hormad2 deficient ovaries with Mcmdc2 mutant background allowed survival of oocytes. This points into the direction that Mcmdc2 knockout oocytes get eliminated after prophase I due to failed homologous synapsis. Interestingly, MCMDC2 contains a conserved helicase domain, like the MCM protein family members MCM8 and MCM9. I therefore hyphothesize that Mcmdc2 promotes homolgy search.

Abstract:
AbstractIt was only since 1946 [1945] when my uncle moved to Berkeley that I got to know him well. Before this time we had never lived in the same town, and I had only seen him rarely. Otto Stern moved into a house he had bought several years earlier in the Berkeley hills not far from my parents’ house. Because he was a bachelor, he hired a housekeeper who came in six days a week for a few hours to cook and keep house. He loved good food and good wine. The housekeeper for the last years did not keep the house as clean as he would have liked, but her cooking met with his approval, so she stayed for many years. On Sundays, he would have dinner with his sister, Berta (my mother) and family, or he would go into town for dinner in a restaurant and then to a movie. He loved movies, and Shirley MacLaine was one of his favorite actresses.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractCerebral palsy is a pathological condition whose prevention and treatment have been immensely studied by experts in perinatal medicine and pediatric neurology. Despite this, it is still one of the main concerns nowadays in many countries, not only for scientific reasons but for legal ones also. For instance, in Japan, an increase in lawsuits relating to cerebral palsy was observed more than a decade ago, after healthcare resources in perinatal medicine had increasingly shrunk and had become fragile under the growing burden for physicians and midwives to provide advanced treatment, emergent care, high-risk treatment, and so on. Young physicians did not specialize in obstetrics because of the increased burden, which gave rise to a vicious cycle of shrinking resources in perinatal medicine. To address this issue, the Japan Obstetric Compensation System for Cerebral Palsy (JOCS-CP) was urgently introduced in 2009 to investigate, develop preventive measures, and award monetary compensation on a no-fault basis, with the Japan Council for Quality Health Care (JQ) as its operating organization (Fig. 33.1). It has so far produced annual reports on the prevention of cerebral palsy for nine consecutive years including numerical data and specific themes relating to the occurrence and prevention of cerebral palsy. The success of the system is a good reference for responding to adverse events which may happen in and have a vast impact on perinatal care. Therefore, this chapter focuses on cerebral palsy with primary reference to materials published by the JOCS-CP in the field of perinatal medicine. The aim of this chapter is to learn about the issues mentioned above and to discuss the significance and impact of introducing a nationwide system like the JOCS-CP. It describes knowledge and idea to questions of “Why cerebral palsy is highlighted among adverse event in obstetrics?”, “How the no-fault compensation/investigation/prevention system could be introduced?”, “What has been achieved by the system?”, and “How cerebral palsy is prevented?”.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2020: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2020-15189.

Abstract:
Abstract Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a well-known control architecture that has encountered an enormous variety of applications since the very beginning until current days. The pros and cons of such control technique are very well known and both of them rely on the embedded model, which is used to determine the control trajectory. Still, the discrepancy between embedded model and real operative conditions can affect the control response due to uncertainties in measurement chain, noise and so on. Still, it is hardly available in literature what would happen in case the plant is operating far from the design condition of the model. This is of particular interest once a linear MPC is governing a non-linear process where the linearization of the target plant must be processed to tune the MPC itself. This paper analyses experimental results from a fuel cell gas turbine hybrid system, namely SOFC/GT emulator test rig, where a linearized MPC was adopted to control stack inlet temperature. The test rig is constituted by a modified Turbec T100 micro gas turbine where a volume of 4 m3 is interposed between compressor and turbine. This emulates the impact of the SOFC on the GT. The system is connected in real-time mode to a model, which runs in parallel and reads what is going on the plant side and simulates the behavior of the associated SOFC stack. The MPC controller governs the plant according to the stack inlet temperature computed by the model in real-time mode. This MPC must be considered as a supervisor of the system, as the gas turbine was still equipped with its original control system. The plant was subject to an on-purpose strong degradation -operated via a constant venting of air from compressor to ambient. This operation strongly influenced the performance of the system, which were no longer able to operate at a level of temperature and power for which the controller was designed for. Still, a ramping down in power and back up was performed and the MPC showed performance which were in agreement with the design performance. Such surprisingly good result is explained with the complexity of the embedded model, which was derived from a completely physical model of the target system and constituted by more than 200 states.

Abstract:
Strip rolling processes are conducted in the mixed lubrication regime, so that boundary additives are an essential feature of the rolling oil. Fatty alcohols are by far the preferred additives: why are they dominant, and what makes them so good for this particular application? A series of model lubricants have been formulated and tested first with the Plane-Strain Compression Test (PSCT) from RT to 200°C. Then some of the formulations have been studied on a high-speed experimental rolling mill. Conclusions from PSCT and rolling tests converge on several points. Fatty alcohols indeed outperform all other formulations; combining them with other molecules may degrade their action.

Abstract:
Various fibrous tissues such as tendons and ligaments functionally adapt to dynamic and static loads. Although a variety of biomechanical studies have been performed so far to determine the mechanism of remodelling in fibrous tissues, it was difficult to obtain detailed information because of complicated constitution of the tissues. Meanwhile we have been developing a stem cell-based self-assembled tissue (scSAT) for tissue engineering, composed of synovial-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their native extracellular matrix. The scSAT used for cartilage repair is called tissue engineered construct (TEC) [1, 2]. Since the scSAT specimen is consisted of stem cells and their native extracellular matrix, it can be a good experimental model of fibrous tissues to determine the process of remodelling. Therefore, the effects of cyclic tensioning and its duration on the mechanical property of the scSAT specimen were investigated in the present study. It was also the purpose of the present study to determine the bio-synthesis condition adequate for improving the mechanical property of the scSAT specimen.

Abstract:
When a ship advances in a seaway, it undergoes 6-degree-of-freedom motion. The ship motions and wave loads are very important from operability and survivability points of view. The resistance increase due to waves is also important from the economic point of view. Although the accurate prediction of these seakeeping characteristics should be done using the unsteady CFD computations, the analytical method based on the linear potential flow theory have been widely used to evaluate them at the early design stage since the latter does not require large computing resources. In the present paper, the added resistance of a ship advancing in waves was calculated using both Maruo’s far-field formula and the near-field method. The radiation-diffraction potential over the wetted surface of the ship has been obtained using the three-dimensional frequency-domain forward-speed free-surface Green function (Brard 1948) and the forward-speed Green integral equation (Hong 2000). Numerical solutions are obtained by making use of the 9-node second-order inner collocation boundary element method (Hong et al. 2014b). In the present paper, Maruo’s far-field formula was combined with the exact three-dimensional Kochin function so that the added resistance thereby obtained could show good comparison with experimental results over the entire wave range including the short wave range. The near-field added resistance is the time mean value of the 2nd-order forces acting on the advancing ship in waves. The time-mean hydrodynamic force, obtained by using direct integration of the hydrodynamic pressure due to the sum of the unsteady potential and steady potential approximated by the double-body potential over the wetted surface of the ship, was also presented. Comparison of the present far-field and simplified near-field numerical values and the experimental values reported by Journee (1992) of the added resistance for the Wigley ship models I and II has been made in order to find appropriate numerical values of the far-field added resistance over the entire frequency range of interest.

Abstract:
The pandemic of the new COVID-19 has raised many questions to a very connected society as to how to best respond to such a challenge at this current time. The best response so far is to call people for following the instructions from the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a way of reducing the spread of the virus and thus relieving the health system, striving to avoid a collapse. This work studies the spread of positive opinion on adhering to social distancing based on network topology and metrics using a network-oriented model for social contagion. It is shown that interventions based on social network measurements can be used to boost the spread of positive opinion about adhering to these measures. It is also shown that our model accounts for the relevance the health authorities have on encouraging people to partake in social distancing voluntarily.

Abstract:
As known, embolism is one of the major causes of stroke, which represents the rapid loss of brain functions. Two major sources of emboli which may cause ischemic attack were emboli formed in heart and from a ruptured arterial plaque in carotid arties. Due to the different characteristics of emboli formed from different mechanisms, the migration route of specific emboli in cerebral arteries may be different, so does the territory of the ischemic attack caused by them. Therefore, a good understanding of emboli migration in the complex cerebral arterial network may provide a good guidance for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke. Studies on the emboli motion in cerebral arteries so far were based on phantom models [1]. Although CFD simulation has been used on prediction of cerebral blood perfusion for many years, CFD particle tracking technique is rarely applied on study emboli migration in cerebral arteries. The present study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using CFD particle tracking on emboli migration study with emphasis on the discussions of the particle tracking result by different coupling algorithms between blood flow and embolic particles.

Abstract:
The objective of the present paper is to provide a general overview of the research carried out so far in single-phase heat transfer and flow in capillary (micro) pipes. Laminar flow and laminar-to-turbulent flow transition are analyzed in detail in order to clarify the discrepancies among the results obtained by different researchers. Experiments performed in the ENEA laboratory indicate that in laminar flow regime the friction factor is in good agreement with the Hagen-Poiseuille theory for Reynolds number below 600–800. For higher values of Reynolds number, experimental data depart from the Hagen-Poiseuille law to the side of higher f values. The transition from laminar-to-turbulent flow occurs for Reynolds number in the range 1800–2500. Heat transfer experiments show that heat transfer correlations in laminar and turbulent regimes, developed for conventional (macro) tubes, are not properly adequate for heat transfer rate prediction in microtubes.

Abstract:
Atlas of fortified settlements in the province of Viterbo, Italy (tenth-fifteenth centuries). Sources and methods for the reconstruction of the late-medieval settlement networkThis study addressed the historical phenomenon known as incastellamento, in the area of the current province of Viterbo, from a quantitative and geographical perspective. The time period considered was the tenth-fifteenth century. The paper describes the documentary sources, historical maps, aerial images, past studies and archaeological sources that are available to researchers, and which have been used, in good measure, to reconstruct the fortified settlement network. Moreover, the paper explains the methodologies used to identify, store and geocode the whole dataset, which so far comes to a total of 191 fortified settlements. In conclusion, we discuss the main characteristics of the online atlas, intended as an open and interoperable platform to consult, query and retrieve information from the dataset of late-medieval fortified settlements.

HEFNER, Robert. IHSAN ETHICS AND POLITICAL REVITALIZATION Appreciating Muqtedar Khan’s Islam and Good Governance. IIIT, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47816/01.001.20.

Full text
Abstract:
Ours is an age of pervasive political turbulence, and the scale of the challenge requires new thinking on politics as well as public ethics for our world. In Western countries, the specter of Islamophobia, alt-right populism, along with racialized violence has shaken public confidence in long-secure assumptions rooted in democracy, diversity, and citizenship. The tragic denouement of so many of the Arab uprisings together with the ascendance of apocalyptic extremists like Daesh and Boko Haram have caused an even greater sense of alarm in large parts of the Muslim-majority world. It is against this backdrop that M.A. Muqtedar Khan has written a book of breathtaking range and ethical beauty. The author explores the history and sociology of the Muslim world, both classic and contemporary. He does so, however, not merely to chronicle the phases of its development, but to explore just why the message of compassion, mercy, and ethical beauty so prominent in the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet came over time to be displaced by a narrow legalism that emphasized jurisprudence, punishment, and social control. In the modern era, Western Orientalists and Islamists alike have pushed the juridification and interpretive reification of Islamic ethical traditions even further. Each group has asserted that the essence of Islam lies in jurisprudence (fiqh), and both have tended to imagine this legal heritage on the model of Western positive law, according to which law is authorized, codified, and enforced by a leviathan state. “Reification of Shariah and equating of Islam and Shariah has a rather emaciating effect on Islam,” Khan rightly argues. It leads its proponents to overlook “the depth and heights of Islamic faith, mysticism, philosophy or even emotions such as divine love (Muhabba)” (13). As the sociologist of Islamic law, Sami Zubaida, has similarly observed, in all these developments one sees evidence, not of a traditionalist reassertion of Muslim values, but a “triumph of Western models” of religion and state (Zubaida 2003:135). To counteract these impoverishing trends, Khan presents a far-reaching analysis that “seeks to move away from the now failed vision of Islamic states without demanding radical secularization” (2). He does so by positioning himself squarely within the ethical and mystical legacy of the Qur’an and traditions of the Prophet. As the book’s title makes clear, the key to this effort of religious recovery is “the cosmology of Ihsan and the worldview of Al-Tasawwuf, the science of Islamic mysticism” (1-2). For Islamist activists whose models of Islam have more to do with contemporary identity politics than a deep reading of Islamic traditions, Khan’s foregrounding of Ihsan may seem unfamiliar or baffling. But one of the many achievements of this book is the skill with which it plumbs the depth of scripture, classical commentaries, and tasawwuf practices to recover and confirm the ethic that lies at their heart. “The Quran promises that God is with those who do beautiful things,” the author reminds us (Khan 2019:1). The concept of Ihsan appears 191 times in 175 verses in the Quran (110). The concept is given its richest elaboration, Khan explains, in the famous hadith of the Angel Gabriel. This tradition recounts that when Gabriel appeared before the Prophet he asked, “What is Ihsan?” Both Gabriel’s question and the Prophet’s response make clear that Ihsan is an ideal at the center of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet, and that it enjoins “perfection, goodness, to better, to do beautiful things and to do righteous deeds” (3). It is this cosmological ethic that Khan argues must be restored and implemented “to develop a political philosophy … that emphasizes love over law” (2). In its expansive exploration of Islamic ethics and civilization, Khan’s Islam and Good Governance will remind some readers of the late Shahab Ahmed’s remarkable book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic (Ahmed 2016). Both are works of impressive range and spiritual depth. But whereas Ahmed stood in the humanities wing of Islamic studies, Khan is an intellectual polymath who moves easily across the Islamic sciences, social theory, and comparative politics. He brings the full weight of his effort to conclusion with policy recommendations for how “to combine Sufism with political theory” (6), and to do so in a way that recommends specific “Islamic principles that encourage good governance, and politics in pursuit of goodness” (8).

Abstract:
A study was performed by the Energy Branch of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, on behalf of the US Army Installation Management Command under the Installation Technology Transition Program. The focus of the study was related to maintainability and operability issues associated with High Performance Sustainable Buildings (HPSBs). This study was conducted primarily based on information gleaned from telephone and web conference discussions with installation Directorate of Public Works personnel including Operation and Maintenance (O&amp;M) Chiefs, energy managers, maintenance supervisors, and maintenance technicians. Experiences with HPSBs varied from installation to installation. For example, some installations had very positive experiences with photovoltaic (PV) arrays while other sites questioned their practicality due to maintainability problems. One site noted that PV technologies are changing so rapidly that procuring spare/repair parts becomes difficult or impossible when vendors discontinue supporting their older technologies or manufacturers go out of business. Based on discussions with the installation O&amp;M personnel, a table of pro and con recommendations for 25 technologies, which are commonly implemented on HPSBs, was prepared and is included in this report.

Ruiz de Gauna, Itziar, Anil Markandya, Laura Onofri, et al. Economic Valuation of the Ecosystem Services of the Mesoamerican Reef, and the Allocation and Distribution of these Values. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003289.

Full text
Abstract:
Coral reefs are one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on Earth. The Mesoamerican Reef contains the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. However, its health is threatened, so there is a need for a management and sustainable conservation. Key to this is knowing the economic value of the ecosystem. “Mainstreaming the value of natural capital into policy decision-making is vital” The value of environmental and natural resources reflects what society is willing to pay for a good or service or to conserve natural resources. Conventional economic approaches tended to view value only in terms of the willingness to pay for raw materials and physical products generated for human production and consumption (e.g. fish, mining materials, pharmaceutical products, etc.). As recognition of the potential negative impacts of human activity on the environment became more widespread, economists began to understand that people might also be willing to pay for other reasons beyond the own current use of the service (e.g. to protect coral reefs from degradation or to know that coral reefs will remain intact in the future). As a result of this debate, Total Economic Value (TEV) became the most widely used and commonly accepted framework for classifying economic benefits of ecosystems and for trying to integrate them into decision-making. This report estimates the economic value of the following goods and services provided by the MAR's coral reefs: Tourism &amp; Recreation, Fisheries, Shoreline protection. To our knowledge, the inclusion of non-use values in the economic valuation of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is novel, which makes the study more comprehensive.

Abstract:
The linguistic research of (the new) media so far has mainly focused on the analysis of content from broadcasters – people publishing on the Internet in order to convince the potential recipients to enter the website, read articles, explore the website as well as return after leaving it – in exchange for the material or financial benefit. Several years of observation of a variety of text types existing in the media shows that not only texts from broadcasters make it possible to notice and maintain this attention of recipients. Nowadays, similarly as in marketing and advertising, in the media (but not only there) the essential and productive content comes from the recipient. The subject of this quantitative and qualitative linguistic analysis is the title testimonial as a rapidly growing persuasive (promotional) trend in (new) media and a response to the challenges of the modern society.

Abstract:
Municipal insurance–a collective compact in which municipal government is the lead actor in designing, delivering, and supervising a health care financing arrangement—is considered by some Guatemalans as a potential new avenue for improving financial protection against rising costs and improved access to quality health care. This brief presents a political economy analysis of the prospects for the adoption of municipal insurance in Guatemala. Municipal insurance has so far been tried only once, in 2015, by the large suburban municipality of Villa Nueva. Drawing from the Villa Nueva experience, based on interviews with nearly 30 key informants, this brief examines the potential obstacles to municipal insurance reform as well as leading factors favoring its introduction. Consistent health ministry support and equity concerns are potential limitations, for example, while decentralization and the recent emergence of creative insurance products are likely to be supportive. This brief then concludes with consideration of the policy implications of such a reform. We also offer a series of policy recommendations for policymakers and practitioners who may be looking to implement municipal insurance reform.
