Abstract:
SOA-based systems o er high degree of exibility and interoperabil- ity. However, the securing of SOA-based applications is still a challenge. Although some related techniques have been proposed and presented in academia and industry, it is still dicult to check SOA quality in security aspect from an architecture view. In this thesis project, a method for security analysis in SOA is intro- duced and investigated. The method intends to be used for analyzing security of SOA-based systems on architecture level. To demonstrate the method, a prototype supporting the method is introduced and imple- mented. And the method and prototype are also evaluated respectively based on Technology Acceptance Model. The evaluation result shows that the prototype supporting the method is a promising inspection tool to detect software vulnerability.

Abstract:
In the new economic environment enterprises must achieve both interoperability and agility. In this thesis the main research question is the following: How to design a service oriented architecture methodology driven by business to support inter-organizational collaboration? To overcome the conceptual and technological barriers of interoperability. We propose a top-down model driven method based on BPM and SOA principles to ensure collaboration efficiency and effectiveness. The proposed method explains how to identify, specify and implement collaborative processes and collaborative public services. In the proposed method business processes ensure interoperability at the business level, while reusable services, standards and SOA platform support interoperability at the IT level

Abstract:
As amostras vítreas contendo selênio apresentaram coloração rosa. Its highly volatile characteristic during the glass melting, which causes losses around 80%, has been discussed for a long time. Meanwhile, alternatives have been searched to increase the yield of selenium. Microencapsulation of the selenium by sol-gel processing may be considered for new studies. This work presents an investigation, in laboratory scale, of the selenium yield in two model soda-lime glass compositions. Different sources of selenium (Se0, ZnSeO3, Na2SeO3) were used, which were incorporated into a silica rich material, containing the selenium source, by sol-gel method. The glass samples were obtained by melting the raw-materials at 1350°C in high alumina crucibles, and showed different grades of pink coloration. Chemical analysis results showed that the incorporation of selenium was higher in the glass containing higher concentration of alkaline elements. In terms of selenium source, the best yield (lowest loss of selenium) was 34 wt%, obtained with SG3 (synthesized material by sol-gel method) as the selenium source. The optical absorption curves presented three main absorption bands: 380 nm (Fe3+), 500 nm (Se0/Se2-) and 720 nm (Fe2+). The samples obtained by sol-gel were amorphous, acquired a strong reddish coloration with time, and indicated potential characteristics for application as a humidity sensor.

Vzorky HAP byly podrobeny analýze FTIR, XRD, SEM. Takto připravený HAP byl napěněn pomocí houbové metody s jasně definovanými póry a pomocí polymerního a skleněného expanzelu s různou distribucí a velikostí pórů. U výsledných napěněných vzorků byla vyhodnocena mikrostruktura a povrchová analýza pomocí SEM, zjištěna porozita pomocí Hg porozimetru a sledována bioaktivita in vitro v SBF. Byly zjištěny jasně definované makro, mezo a mikro póry při různé distribuci. U houbové metody pomocí sol-gel došlo k vytvoření jasně definovaných a pravidelných pórů s monodisperzní porozitou.

Abstract:
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has some unique properties such as high hydrophobicity and high resistance to elevated temperatures, chemicals and solvents, which make it of interest for numerous fibre and textile applications. However, PTFE normally has a very high viscosity and poor flowability in the melt due to its ultra-high molecular weight, meaning that it cannot be readily melt-spun into textile fibres. In addition, PTFE is insoluble in all common organic solvents, prohibiting its use in common solution spinning methods such as dry, wet or electrospinning. Here we aim to develop an easy and environmentally friendly alternative for the production of PTFE nanofibres, using a modified island-in-the-sea spinning process. For this, first a dispersion of PTFE homopolymer, PVA and water was compounded to create a blend of PTFE particles in PVA solution using different methods, including casting, single-step extrusion and two-step-compounding and extrusion. After solid-state drawing of this blend and removal of the PVA, we were able to collect PTFE nanofibres with finest diameters of around 50nm and lengths up to 15μm. The effects of blend composition, morphology and drawing on PTFE fibre formation and properties were studied and discussed. Furthermore, some other material modification systems, including plasticized PVA, or the use ethylene glycol as a solvent, was studied with the aim of scaling up the fabrication of PTFE nanofibres by spinning the PTFE/PVA blend fibres directly for a twin-screw extruder.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The problem of real-time simulation of ocean surface waves, ship movement and the coupling in between is tackled, and a number of different methods are covered and discussed. Among these methods, the finite volume method has been implemented in an attempt to solve the problem, along with the compressible Euler equations, an octree based staggered grid which allows for easy adaptive mesh refinement, the volume of fluid method and a variant of the Hyper-C advection scheme for compressible flows for advection of the phase fraction field. The process of implementing the methods that were chosen proved to be tricky in many ways, as they involve a large number of advanced topics, and the implementation that was implemented in this thesis work suffered from numerous issues. There were for example problems with keeping the interface intact, as well as a harsh restriction on the time step size due to the CFL condition. Improvements required to make the method sustainable for real-time applications are discussed, and a few suggestions on alternative approaches that are already in use for similar purposes are also given and discussed. Furthermore, a method for compensating for gain/loss of mass when solving the incompressible flow equations with an inaccurately solved pressure Poisson equation is presented and discussed. A momentum conservative method for transporting the velocity field on staggered grids without introducing unnecessary smearing is also presented and implemented. A simple, physically based illumination model for sea surfaces is derived, discussed and compared to the Blinn–Phong shading model, although it is never implemented. Finally, a two-dimensional partial differential equation in the spatial domain for simulating water surface waves for mildly varying bottom topography is derived and discussed, although it is deemed to be too slow for real-time purposes and is therefore never implemented.<br><p>This publication differs from the printed version of the report in the sense that links are blue in this version and black in the printed version.</p>

Abstract:
This study describes the tectono-stratigraphic and climatic record of the NE Arabian Sea during the Cenozoic.  Compilation of regional knowledge and subsurface observations has in this thesis provided new interpretations and insights into the records present along this passive margin.  The first is the rifting period (80-65 Ma) and the identification of a syn-rift volcanic sequence, comparable to other volcanic rifted margins.  This is followed by the record of a drift sequence (~65 Ma to present day), composed of extensive carbonate platforms and an infill sequence of siliciclastic deposits.  The analysed drift sequence (sink) is partly the result of the erosion of the hinterland (source) characterised by the India-Eurasia continent-continent collision.  Influence of regional climate and/or tectonic forces on the accumulation rate in the sink was tested, but not conclusive as the study area (Upper Indus Fan) covers only a limited part of the sedimentary record of the Indus Fan.  The thermal regime of the western margin of India is sparsely sampled, but once analysed, allows the definition of first order constraints on multiple rifting events.  The post-rift subsidence of the margin is slow and anomalous for &gt;28 m.y. after break-up, potentially in relation with vigorous asthenospheric convection and a sharp ocean-continent boundary.  Past and present fluid flow is recorded in the sedimentary sequence of the Upper Indus Fan.  The first is related to gas hydrate occurrence and is the result of the migration of fluids by a plumbing system to the shallow subsurface, expressed by bottom-simulating reflections crosscutting stratal reflections.  A longer term fluid migration is recorded in this basin by the longest lived (~22 m.y.) mud volcano field recorded to date.

Abstract:
The subject of this doctoral thesis was to elucidate the mechanism of reaction leading to the formation of dicalcium silicate (C2S), its solid solutions and other phosphatic calcium silicate phases using the sol-gel method of synthesis. SiO2 (Tosil A), CaO (calcium nitrate tetra-hydrate) and H3PO4 (as a source of P2O5) were used as starting materials. Series of samples with different content of P2O5 were synthesized. The characterization of Tosil A and samples was based on the following methods: DTA/TGA and EGA, XRD and SEM and EDS analy-ses. It is known, that phosphorous oxide can enter the structure of C2S and possibly form solid solutions and different phosphatic calcium silicate phases in C2S–C3P system. Depending on the P2O5 concentration in mixtures, three distinct phases are formed: larnite (2CaO•SiO2), Ca14,92(PO4)2,35(SiO4)5,65 and 5CaO•SiO2•P2O5, as detected by XRD. Local microanalysis de-monstrated the presence of calcium phosphate epicenters (C3P) containing SiO2, calcium sili-cate (C2S) zones with minimum content of P2O5 and intermediary areas of various phosphatic calcium silicates. The formation of two distinct islets of C2S and C3P is due the affinity of acid oxides (SiO2, P2O5) towards the basic one (CaO) during the sol-gel process. Then, the formation of various phosphatic calcium silicates results from the diffusion of P2O5 and SiO2 towards calcium silicate and calcium phosphate, respectively.

Abstract:
Os sistemas estudados incluíram as seguintes misturas binárias: (Pt0,50-(RuO2)0,50/C, Pt0,50-(IrOx)0,50/C, Pt0,50-(CeO,sub>2)0,50/C, (PtOx)0,50-(PbOx)0,50/C, Pt0,50-(Môo3)0,50/C) e as misturas ternárias: (Pt0,25(RuO2-IrOx)0,75/C, Pt0,50 (RuO2-IrOx)0,50/C, Pt0,75(RuO2-IrOx)0,25/C, Pt0,25(RuO2-CeO2)0,75/C, Pt0,50 (RuO2-CeO2)0,50/C, Pt0,75(RuO2-CeO2)0,25/C, (PtOx)0,25(RuO2- PbOx)0,75/C, (PtOx)0,50 (RuO2-PbOx)0,50/C, (PtOx)0,75(RuO2-PbOx)0,25/C, Pt0,25(RuO2- Môo3)0,75/C, Pt0,50(RuO2-MoO3)0,50/C e Pt0,75(RuO2-MoO3)0,25/C). The preparation and the physical and electrochemical characterization of several binary and tertnary new composite catalytic materials for the direct oxidation of methanol in fuel cell systems are described here. The materials were prepared using the sol-gel method for the incorporation of variable amounts of metals such as Ru, Ir, Ce, Mo and Pb onto commercial samples of Pt/C powder from E-Tek (10% Pt). In most cases, the resulting composite was formed by the corresponding metal oxides as indicated by the subsequent physical characterization measurements. The systems studied included the following binary mixtures: Pt0,50-(RuO2)0,50/C, Pt0,50-(IrOx)0,50/C, Pt0,50-(CeO,sub>2)0,50/C, (PtOx)0,50-(PbOx)0,50/C, Pt0,50-(Môo3)0,50/C and the ternary ones: Pt0,25(RuO2-IrOx)0,75/C, Pt0,50 (RuO2-IrOx)0,50/C, Pt0,75(RuO2-IrOx)0,25/C, Pt0,25(RuO2-CeO2)0,75/C, Pt0,50 (RuO2-CeO2)0,50/C, Pt0,75(RuO2-CeO2)0,25/C, (PtOx)0,25(RuO2- PbOx)0,75/C, (PtOx)0,50 (RuO2-PbOx)0,50/C, (PtOx)0,75(RuO2-PbOx)0,25/C, Pt0,25(RuO2- Môo3)0,75/C, Pt0,50(RuO2-MoO3)0,50/C and Pt0,75(RuO2-MoO3)0,25/C X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that all metals incorporated to the Pt/C samples appeared as oxides (e.g. RuO2, IrO2, Ir2O3, CeO2, Pb3O4 e MoO3) while platinum remained metallic except for the composites containing lead where the final composition showed metallic Pt as well as PtO and PtO2. The sol-gel prepared composites were nanometric in size (2.8 - 3.5 nm) as shown by electronic transmission microscopy as well as by X-ray diffraction while energy dispersive Xray measurements indicated that the composites have compositions values very close to those of the experimental preparation. Methanol oxidation was studied on all composites by cyclic voltammetry followed by quasi steady-state polarization curves with the corresponding Tafel plots and, finally, by chronoamperometric tests with analyses of the main products in solution by chromatography. xii The measured values of the Tafel coefficient (b) are an indicative that the ratedetermining- step (rds) for methanol oxidation on catalysts containing Ir is the rupture of one of the C-H bonds in the CH3OH molecule with the transference of one electron (CH3OH = ~120 mV dec-1). For the other composites studied the b values are around 90 mV dec-1 indicating that the rds in those cases could be the oxidative removal of COads by the adsorbed intermediates of the water molecule oxidation (R-OH.). On the other hand, the chromatographic analyses of the products formed in solution during the chronoamperometric tests seem to point out that the Pt0,25(RuO2-IrOx)0,75/C composite is the one with the best catalytic performance for methanol oxidation. This is because for that material an accumulation of formaldehyde was not observed while the remnant formic acid was lower than for the other tested composites using equivalent electric charges. This is a strong indicative that the oxidation of methanol on that material efficiently also oxidizes the formaldehyde and the formic acid molecules to CO2 not leaving soluble intermediates in solution. Therefore, the present studies clearly show that the best catalysts for methanol oxidation are: Pt0,25(RuO2-IrOx)0,75/C, Pt0,50(RuO2-IrOx)0,50/C e Pt0,75(RuO2-IrOx)0,25/C, thus confirming that a proper combination of Pt, Ru and Ir is very promising for such application.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important greenhouse gas, and the atmospheric concentration of CO2 has increased by more than 100 ppm since prior to the industrial revolution.  The global oceans are considered an important sink of atmospheric CO2, since approximately one third of the anthropogenic emissions are absorbed by the oceans. To be able to model the global carbon cycle and the future climate, it is important to have knowledge of the processes controlling the air-sea exchange of CO2. In this thesis, measurements as well as a model is used in order to increase the knowledge of the exchange processes. The air-sea flux of CO2 is estimated from high frequency measurements using three methods; one empirical method, and two methods with a solid theoretical foundation. The methods are modified to be applicable for various atmospheric stratifications, and the agreement between methods is good in average. A new parameterization of the transfer velocity (the rate of transfer across the air-sea interface), is implemented in a Baltic Sea model. The new parameterization includes also the mechanism of water-side convection. The impact of including the new parameterization is relatively small due to feedback processes in the model. The new parameterization is however more representative for flux calculations using in-situ measurement or remote sensing products. When removing the feedback to the model, the monthly average flux increases by up to 20% in some months, compared to when water-side convection is not included. The Baltic Sea carbon budget was estimated using the Baltic Sea model, and the Baltic Sea was found to be a net sink of CO2. This is consistent with some previous studies, while contradictory to others. The dissimilarity between studies indicates the difficulty in estimating the carbon budget mainly due to variations of the CO2 uptake/release in time and space. Local variations not captured by the model, such as coastal upwelling, give uncertainties to the model. Coastal upwelling can alter the uptake/release of CO2 in a region by up to 250%. If upwelling would be included in the model, the Baltic Sea might be considered a smaller sink of CO2.

Abstract:
Under the right conditions, a moving sphere may successfully enter, and leave, a soap bubble without rupturing that bubble. The physics behind this phenomena are not well understood, nor the limiting factors (such as sphere size, speed, etc.). This work, investigating this phenomenon using high speed photography, has produced several results which are presented. First, several distinct regimes, noted while photographing the interactions between the spheres and the bubbles, are classified and discussed. Next a probabilistic examination of the soap bubbles rupture by the moving spheres is presented. Then a conjecture for the limiting sphere sizes and speeds is presented. And finally some interesting phenomena, noted in the course of this investigation, are presented and discussed.

Crawford, Ophelia. "On the viscoelastic deformation of the Earth." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2019. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/287529.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-seismic deformation and glacial isostatic adjustment are two processes by which the Earth deforms viscoelastically. In both cases, the details of the deformation depend on the rheological structure of the Earth as well as the forcing, which is the earthquake and further movement on the fault in the case of post-seismic deformation, and the change in load on the surface of the Earth due to the redistribution of water and ice mass in the case of glacial isostatic adjustment. It is therefore possible to learn about the Earth's rheological structure and the processes' respective forcings from measurements of the deformation. In order to use measurements in this way, it is first necessary to have a method of forward modelling the processes, that is, calculating the deformation due to a given forcing and in an earth model with a given structure. Given this, a way of calculating derivatives of measurements of the deformation with respect to the parameters of interest is then desirable. In this dissertation, the adjoint method is used. This, for the first time, enables efficient calculation of continuous derivatives, which have many potential applications. Firstly, they can be used within a gradient-based optimisation method to find a model which minimises some data misfit function. The derivatives can also be used to quantify the uncertainty in such a model and hence to provide understanding of which parts of the model are well constrained. Finally, they enable construction of measurements which provide sensitivity to a particular part of the model space. In this dissertation, new methods for forward modelling both post-seismic deformation and glacial isostatic adjustment are presented. The adjoint method is also applied to both problems. Numerical examples are presented in spherically symmetric earth models and, in the case of glacial isostatic adjustment, models with laterally varying rheological structure. Such examples are used to illustrate the potential applications of the developments made within this dissertation.

The pressure generation within the lubricant fluid present in the clearance between a thrust bearing and the collar attached to the shaft has a fundamental importance to avoid contact between solid parts with axial relative motion. Any existing contact can lead to friction, wear and, as a consequence, failure of elements on a rotating machine. Therefore, in order to design an effective bearing, it is important to know how the pressure is generated in the oil film and the magnitude of the load capacity transmitted from the collar to the bearing throughout the fluid. Thus, it is necessary to solve the Reynolds' Equation to obtain the pressure distribution on the sections under Hydrodynamic Lubrication. Afterwards, several operational parameters can be obtained, such as the total load capacity, lubricant fluid flow, position of the maximum pressure and so on. In order to evaluate this hydrodynamic lubrication problem, the solution of the Reynolds Equation by using the Finite Volume Method in polar coordinates is obtained. This method is used to solve the balance of fluid flow in each control volume with help from the Bernoulli Equation, allowing the analysis of the film thickness discontinuities. Individual pads and complete axial bearings, including its grooves, are analyzed. The influence of the set of parameters involved, such as area of the flat part of the pad, film thickness and viscosity of the fluid, on the results of the distribution of pressure and the calculated load capacity was evaluated, as well as the evaluation of the optimum dimensions for bearings. Finally, the stiffness and damping coefficients for such type of bearings were obtained and the obtained results were analyzed<br>Mestrado<br>Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico<br>Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to characterise the structure of refrozen cracks, and to deduce the details of their formation. Surveys and experiments are conducted on straight-sided, linear, refrozen cracks of width 80 mm to 340 mm in land-fast first-year sea ice in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Refreezing of cracks is simulated analytically, and with a numerical fluid dynamics model of brine movement in the porous sea ice and in the ocean. Systematic arch-shaped patterns of inclusions, upstream-growing crystals, and two-dimensional variations in salinity are identified in completely and partially refrozen, natural cracks, and in artificial cracks. Using a two-dimensional thermistor array, a relationship between the development of the sea ice structure and the temperature records is found, which identifies the transition from the porous, skeletal layer to consolidated ice in artificial cracks. A two-dimensional analytical model is developed that predicts the measured thickness of consolidated ice in refreezing cracks for this study and for the studies of others. From a heat balance within the refreezing cracks, it is concluded that some of the experiments were conducted in the presence of a negative ocean heat flux. A two-dimensional thermistor array beneath the ice-water interface of a refreezing crack provides evidence for sporadic, cold temperature, advective events at night. A two-dimensional, numerical fluid dynamics model based on the finite volume method is developed to simulate desalination and fluid flow in refreezing cracks. This requires a permeability-porosity relationship for sea ice, which is deduced from data of other groups, combined with the numerical model. To make comparisons among data sets, an analytical approximation is derived for the relationship between connected pore space and total pore space of a random porous medium, based on a Monte Carlo model that is adapted to the crystal structure of sea ice. The permeability-porosity relationship derived in this study is in good agreement with permeability functions published recently. The refreezing of cracks simulated with the numerical fluid dynamics model is consistent with experiments and with the analytical model. In addition, the numerical model simulates the high porosity, arch-shaped freezing front and inclusion structure. Supercooling of the liquid is found to cause excessive heat loss in the simulation. Since a large oceanic heat flux was not observed in the experimental heat balance of refreezing slots, it is suggested that this indicates platelet ice formation or frazil ice formation at the vertical crack interface in Antarctic experiments.

Abstract:
In this scientific essay, I investigate how pedagogues are affected by working with the method of family stories, which the principal has decided that all young children´s departmens shouldwork with. The method includes many parts and is tightly controlled. What are the possibilities and limitations of the method? I start by designing the method through selfexperienced examples and then describe it briefly. I gather my empirical data by talking to pedagogues at the preschool where I work, talking to children and observing pedagogues and children. Previous conversations in various contexts with other pedagogues in the preschool area are also included in the documentation. I write in the field of practical knowledge and power and judgment become part of the survey. Who has the power over the methods we use and how they are used? Methods with strict control remove the possibility of using our judgment. I reason around these questions together with theories and my empirical data. Writing is part of the research process. I thematize the discussion with the empirics and theories by relating to the following: thoughts about the method in general, about cooperation with families, about the method as language development, play development, as support in the transition to the next department and what happens when reality goes beyond the manual. I have gained an in-depth understanding of how the method can be used and the importance of pedagogues knowing the theories behind the method but also their own practice theory. The family stories as a method contain great opportunities for many good pedagogical efforts if the pedagogue knows the theory behind the method, uses his own knowledge and is allowed to make decisions about the design with his own judgment. If, on the other hand, the description is perceived and used as a manual, the judgment is disconnected and there is a great risk that it will only be an action that does not lead to any development. The pedagogues must also relate to the needs of their own unique group of children and adapt the method accordingly.

Abstract:
The numerical simulation of elastic wave propagation in unbounded media is a topical issue. This need arises in a variety of real life engineering problems, from the modelling of railway- or machinery-induced vibrations to the analysis of seismic wave propagation and soil-structure interaction problems. Due to the complexity of the involved geometries and materials behavior, modelling such situations requires sophisticated numerical methods. The Boundary Element method (BEM) is a very effective approach for dynamical problems in spatially-extended regions (idealized as unbounded), especially since the advent of fast BEMs such as the Fast Multipole Method (FMM) used in this work. The BEM is based on a boundary integral formulation which requires the discretization of the only domain boundary (i.e. a surface in 3-D) and accounts implicitly for the radiation conditions at infinity. As a main disadvantage, the BEM leads a priori to a fully-populated and (using the collocation approach) non-symmetrical coefficient matrix, which make the traditional implementation of this method prohibitive for large problems (say O(106) boundary DoFs). Applied to the BEM, the Multi-Level Fast Multipole Method (ML-FMM) strongly lowers the complexity in computational work and memory that hinder the classical formulation, making the ML-FMBEM very competitive in modelling elastic wave propagation. The elastodynamic version of the Fast Multipole BEM (FMBEM), in a form enabling piecewise-homogeneous media, has for instance been successfully used to solve seismic wave propagation problems in a previous work (thesis dissertation of S. Chaillat, ENPC, 2008). This thesis aims at extending the capabilities of the existing frequency-domain elastodynamic FMBEM in two directions. Firstly, the time-harmonic elastodynamic ML-FMBEM formulation has been extended to the case of weakly dissipative viscoelastic media. Secondly, the FMBEM and the Finite Element Method (FEM) have been coupled to take advantage of the versatility of the FEM to model complex geometries and non-linearities while the FM-BEM accounts for wave propagation in the surrounding unbounded medium. In this thesis, we consider two strategies for coupling the FMBEM and the FEM to solve three-dimensional time-harmonic wave propagation problems in unbounded domains. The main idea is to separate one or more bounded subdomains (modelled by the FEM) from the complementary semi-infinite viscoelastic propagation medium (modelled by the FMBEM) through a non-overlapping domain decomposition. Two coupling strategies have been implemented and their performances assessed and compared on several examples

Lead is a naturally occurring element that has high atomic weight (207u) and density (11.3 g/cm3). Their multiple industrial, domestic, agricultural, medical and technological applications have led to their wide distribution in the environment, raising concerns over their potential effects on human health and the environment. At present, extensive application of nanosilica in environmental pollution treatment has led to the development of silica extraction methodologies out of various chemical and waste products. In this study, nanosilica is synthesized by sol-gel method from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) with base catalysts and volumetric ratio TEOS/C2H5OH/H2O/NH4OH: 5/30/1/1 and identified characteristics by some modern techniques such as Energy-dispersive Xray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourrier Transformation Infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron micrograph (SEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The results showed that the prepared SiO2 nanoparticles were amorphous phase with the average size about 60-100 nm and can be used as an immediately utilization for lead treatment. At the pH of 5, shaking within 1 hours with speed 150rpm/min, lead treatment efficiency is 96.17% for initial Pb2+ concentration 10 mgPb2+/L. Maximum adsorption concentration Qmax = 30.3mg/g, and adsorbent and adsorbate constant b = 0.868 L/g. Therefore, extracted nanosilica from TEOS has high lead treatment efficiency. In addition, synthesis nanosilica from rice husk with similar characteristics is a new research approach to improve application and economic value of the material.<br>Chì là nguyên tố tự nhiên có khối lượng nguyên tử cao(207 đvC), tỉ trọng lớn (11,3 g/cm3) và được ứng dụng phổ biến trong công nghiệp, nông nghiệp, sinh hoạt, y tế và công nghệ. In the field of aeronautics (Aircraft, helicopters, space launchers...), as in the field of the automobile, reducing the harmful effects of acoustics constitutes a major concern at the international level and justifies the call for further research. With these challenges in mind, the manufacturers have expressed the need for simple models immediately available as early as the stage of preliminary drafts. This Master's Thesis presents the study and the validation of three different approaches to meet this industrial need. The first approach is based on the propagation of waves in the structure; the second approach uses the technique of SEA by calculating the equivalent damping; and the last approach uses the modal technique. In the three approaches, the transfer matrix method has been used to study the succession of layers. Applying these approaches to some aircraft structures confirm their relevance in relation to more exact and costly methods, such as the finite elements method.

Abstract:
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial<br>Aim: The purpose of this work was to identify and assess safety features on a production line of paper manufacturer called Renova. The assessment includes technical as well as organisational factors. The study was carried out through the evaluation of safety functions (SF), either present or absent in the system analyzed. Methods: The methodology applied was the SFA (Safety Function Analysis), which was developed by Harms-Ringdahl in 2001 and was updated further, in 2011 (draft version). The analytical framework was applied in two processes (raw material loading and transversal cut of log) of a production line (Line H4) of Renova. Results: In the first process analyzed (raw material loading), 47 safety functions (SF) were identified and evaluated, whereas 36 SF were assessed in the second case (transversal cut of log). The evaluation has shown that most of the SF considered are in good condition and being well monitored, therefore they do not need any improvements. In contrast, this work has also identified a number of safety functions that need essential improvements. Conclusions: As a consequence of this SFA analysis, the author proposes a number of specific recommendations to improve safety and the system’s performance in general. Since Renova is a manufacturer of paper products, fire safety is of paramount importance and one of the most relevant recommendations is perhaps the implementation of thermo graphic tests to identify possible hot spots that may originate a fire.

Abstract:
Random search methods are becoming more widely used to estimate model parameters. Their ability to globally search a parameter space makes them attractive for solving problems that have multi-local optima, as are non-linear hydrologic models such as Conceptual Rainfall-Runoff (CRR) models. The investigation of this thesis is on the ability of the Adaptive Random Search (ARS) to find the global optimum of the CRR model known as the Soil Moisture Accounting Model of the National Weather Service River Forecast System (SMA-NWSRFS) and compares its performance to that of the Uniform Random Search (URS). Research results indicate that, although the ARS was slightly more efficient than the URS, neither strategy demonstrated an ability to converge to the globally optimum parameter set. Factors which inhibit the convergence include model structure characteristics and an insufficient number of points searched. Ways for random search techniques to identify and address these problems are discussed.

Abstract:
Flood risk increases with rising sea levels and coastal settlements need to adapt to this increasing risk. For that, hazard and risk assessments are an important step. Coastal floods have caused problems in Iceland in the past and are thought to do so in the future as well. Therefore, a coastal flooding risk as- sessment needs to be made for Iceland. A risk assessment is currently in the early steps of preparation and a fitting method needs to be developed. To facilitate the process, an overview of the methods used in neighbouring countries is provided here and the suitability of the methods for Iceland is discussed. Building on these methods, a coastal flood scenario is produced for both present and future conditions as a preliminary hazard assessment for the country. The scenario produced is an upper bound scenario, highly unlikely but still possible. As a result, flooded areas are mapped and areas that need to be studied further in regard to flood hazard and risk are identified. It is shown that hazard estimation can be per- formed for Iceland through scenario production and that scenario results can be used in risk assessments.<br>De nuvarande klimatförändringar i världen kommer påverka människor på många olika sätt. Ozcebe, Ali Guney. "A Comperative Assessment Of Available Methods For Seismic Performance Evaluation Of Buried Structures." Master's thesis, METU, 2009. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12610857/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last three decades, seismic performance assessment of buried structures has evolved through the following stages : i) buried structures are not prone to seismically-induced damages, thus no need for detailed investigations, ii) eliminating soil-structure-earthquake interaction and use of seismically-induced free field ground deformations directly as the basis for seismic demand, thus producing conservative results, and finally iii) soil-structure and earthquake interaction models incorporating both kinematic and inertial interactions. As part of soil-structure and earthquake interacting models, simplified frame analysis established the state of practice and is widely used. Within the confines of this thesis, the results of simplified frame analysis based response of buried structures are compared with those of 2-D finite element dynamic analyses. For the purpose, 1-D dynamic and 2-D pseudo-dynamic analyses of free field and buried structural systems are performed for a number of generic soil, structure and earthquake combinations. The analyses results revealed that, in general, available closed form solutions are in pretty good agreement with the results of finite element analyses. However, due to the fact that dynamic analyses can model both kinematic and inertial effects<br>it should be preffered for the design of critical structures.

Wang, Chen. "A chemistry-inspired middleware for flexible execution of service based applications." Phd thesis, INSA de Rennes, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00982804.

Abstract:
With the advent of cloud computing and Software-as-a-Service, Service-Based Application (SBA) represents a new paradigm to build rapid, low-cost, interoperable and evolvable distributed applications. A new application is created by defining a workflow that coordinates a set of third-party Web services accessible over the Internet. In such distributed and loose coupling environment, the execution of SBA requires a high degree of flexibility. For example, suitable constituent services can be selected and integrated at runtime based on their Quality of Service (QoS); furthermore, the composition of service is required to be dynamically modified in response to unexpected runtime failures. In this context, the main objective of this dissertation is to design, to develop and to evaluate a service middleware for flexible execution of SBA by using chemical programming model. Using chemical metaphor, the service-based systems are modeled as distributed, selforganized and self-adaptive biochemical systems. Service discovery, selection, coordination and adaptation are expressed as a series of pervasive chemical reactions in the middleware, which are performed in a distributed, concurrent and autonomous way. Additionally, on the way to build flexible service based systems, we do not restrict our research only in investigating chemical-based solutions. In this context, the second objective of this thesis is to find out generic solutions, such as models and algorithms, to respond to some of the most challenging problems in flexible execution of SBAs. I have proposed a two-phase online prediction approach that is able to accurately make decisions to proactively execute adaptation plan before the failures actually occur.

Abstract:
<p>The purpose of this study was to examine how some young mothers, who previously have been in foster care or residential care, describe the way motherhood has affected their lives and identities. Narrative interviews were conducted with three teenage mothers and one mother aged 23. As tools for analyzing the narratives, theories about narrative psychology and how people present themselves through story-telling and language were used. The results of the study show that becoming a mother was life-changing in a positive way, according to the young mothers. They described how they, since becoming mothers, had become more mature and now lived less risk-full lives. Motherhood had brought a new focus to their lives and had given them motivation to study and to become self-supporting. The mothers expressed a wish to give their children a better childhood, than they themselves had. The results of the study were similar with the results reported in previous, qualitative studies of the experiences of young mothers.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
Northern pike or pike Esox lucius is total piscivorous fish species found in the brackish and freshwater ecosystems of the Northern hemisphere. It is a top predator and keystone species that causes cascading effects in these ecosystems. Otoliths have been used to estimate age and growth rates in most fishes. Cleithra have generally have been used in Pike due to opaque nature of the otoliths. The aim of this study was to develop a method for age and growth estimation of pike using sagittal otoliths and carry out age and growth rates estimation of four sub populations; Dunöbäcken, Kårehamn, Oknebäcken and Väderön that represent freshwater and brackish water spawning sites. Determination of growth rates differences between sub populations was done for the first 2 years of their life. The methods included burning of the otoliths, fixing the otoliths in the epoxy resin, polishing of otoliths and staining with Alizarin red, Silver nitrate solution, Tetracycline and alkaline Lugol's solution with observation under light, dissecting and epifluorescence microscopes. Four methods tested based on staining with Alizarin red, Silver nitrate, alkaline Lugol's solution and burning otoliths. Provided useful results and not the method with Tetracycline. Alkaline Lugol's solution staining method was chosen and further developed. There was a significant difference in the relative growth rates between the sub population from brackish water spawning site of Väderön and the sub population from freshwater spawning site of Kårehamn in the first year (One-way ANOVA:F value 3.18, p value 0.0356) and after Tukey post hoc test (p value 0.0362). No difference among sub populations from the freshwater spawning sites. There was no difference in growth rates between any other sub populations in the second year. The importance of the study is successful application of Lugol's solution staining method for age and relative growth estimation studies with otoliths in pike.<br>EcoChange

Abstract:

Komarov, Alexander. "New methods for detecting dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics of sea ice from radar remote sensing." Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/30225.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents new methods for detecting dynamic and thermodynamic characteristics of Arctic sea ice using radar remote sensing. A new technique for sea ice motion detection from sequential satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images was developed and thoroughly validated. The accuracy of the system is 0.43 km obtained from a comparison between SAR-derived ice motion vectors and in-situ sea ice beacon trajectories. For the first time, we evaluated ice motion tracking results derived from co-polarization (HH) and cross-polarization (HV) channels of RADARSAT-2 ScanSAR imagery and formulated a condition where the HV channel is more reliable than the HH channel for ice motion tracking. Sea ice motion is substantially controlled by surface winds. Two new models for ocean surface wind speed retrieval from C-band SAR data have been developed and validated based on a large body of statistics on buoy observations collocated and coincided with RADARSAT-1 and -2 ScanSAR images. The proposed models without wind direction input demonstrated a better accuracy than conventionally used algorithms. As a combination of the developed methods we designed a wind speed-ice motion product which can be a useful tool for studying sea ice dynamics processes in the marginal ice zone. To effectively asses the thermodynamic properties of sea ice advanced tools for modeling electromagnetic (EM) wave scattering from rough natural surfaces are required. In this dissertation we present a new analytical formulation for EM wave scattering from rough boundaries interfacing inhomogeneous media based on the first-order approximation of the small perturbation method. Available solutions in the literature represent special cases of our general solution. The developed scattering theory was applied to experimental data collected at three stations (with different snow thicknesses) in the Beaufort Sea from the research icebreaker Amundsen during the Circumpolar Flaw Lead system study. Good agreement between the model and experimental data were observed for all three case studies. Both model and experimental radar backscatter coefficients were considerably higher for thin snow cover (4 cm) compared to the thick snow cover case (16 cm). Our findings suggest that, winter snow thickness retrieval may be possible from radar observations under particular scattering conditions.

Abstract:
<p> According to the Great Commission, the clear call of Christian leaders is to make disciples (Matt. 28:16-20). Many key Christian leaders and thinkers cite personal Bible reading as one of the key components to the life of a growing disciple. Unfortunately, research shows that many American Christians are not actively reading the Bible outside of Sunday morning services (Stetzer, 2012). Thus, a mixed-methods study was done of a group of infrequent Bible readers from Crossway Church to assess the impact of the SOAP method of Bible reading on their spiritual lives. The group committed to reading one chapter of the Bible using the SOAP method five days a week for nine weeks. Qualitative interviews were conducted after the nine weeks, and the results of the participants' pre- and post-group Transformational Discipleship Assessment scores were analyzed to determine the kind of impact consistent Bible reading had on their lives. The researcher found significant spiritual growth in the lives of those who participated. Implications for the researcher's church as well as the local church at large are articulated in this dissertation.</p><p>

Abstract:
The main subject of the present research is the geological development of the south-eastern Baltic Sea in Holocene (11000 – 0 calendar years before the present) and prediction of its development in the future (0-1000 calendar years after the present). The present is calendar years 2000AD. The working area is estimated between longitude 18ºE - 21º30’E and latitude between 54ºN - 56º30’N including the onshore and offshore of Lithuania. The quantitative and qualitative geological information and the geological interpretation allowed the 4D modeling of the south-eastern Baltic Sea. Detailed comparison of the influence of isostatic and eustatic components has made it possible to distinguish between these two factors and to create the isostatic intensity models. Last investigations of the global sea level rise (IPCC 2001, 2007) and the model of the recent tectonic activity in the region were used for creation of the prognosis scenarios of relief development in the future. The 4D models created in this dissertation are very well understandable for specialists and for wider readership not engaged in scientific research. The results presented in the dissertation can be useful also by archaeologists and biologists. The results of the model show all the drawbacks of geological material collected so far and outline new perspectives for marine geologists, i.e. demonstrate what works should be done in the future to get more precise results.<br>Pagrindinis tyrimų tikslas buvo atkurti pietrytinės Baltijos jūros raidą holocene (11000 – 0 kalendorinių metų iki dabar) ir atlikti jūros raidos prognozę iki 1000 metų nuo dabar.

Chronopoulos, Dimitrios. "Prediction of the vibroacoustic response of aerospace composite structures in a broadband frequency range." Phd thesis, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, 2012. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00787864.

Full text
Abstract:
During its mission, a launch vehicle is subject to broadband, severe, aeroacoustic and structure-borne excitations of various provenances, which can endanger the survivability of the payload and the vehicles electronic equipment, and consequently the success of the mission. Aerospace structures are generally characterized by the use of exotic composite materials of various configurations and thicknesses, as well as by their extensively complex geometries and connections between different subsystems. It is therefore of crucial importance for the modern aerospace industry, the development of analytical and numerical tools that can accurately predict the vibroacoustic response of large, composite structures of various geometries and subject to a combination of aeroacoustic excitations. Recently, a lot of research has been conducted on the modelling of wave propagation characteristics within composite structures. In this study, the Wave Finite Element Method (WFEM) is used in order to predict the wave dispersion characteristics within orthotropic composite structures of various geometries, namely flat panels, singly curved panels, doubly curved panels and cylindrical shells. These characteristics are initially used for predicting the modal density and the coupling loss factor of the structures connected to the acoustic medium. Subsequently the broad-band Transmission Loss (TL) of the modelled structures within a Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) wave-context approach is calculated. Mainly due to the extensive geometric complexity of structures, the use of Finite Element(FE) modelling within the aerospace industry is frequently inevitable. The use of such models is limited mainly because of the large computation time demanded even for calculations in the low frequency range. During the last years, a lot of researchers focus on the model reduction of large FE models, in order to make their application feasible. In this study, the Second Order ARnoldi (SOAR) reduction approach is adopted, in order to minimize the computation time for a fully coupled composite structural-acoustic system, while at the same time retaining a satisfactory accuracy of the prediction in a broadband sense. The system is modelled under various aeroacoustic excitations, namely a diffused acoustic field and a Turbulent Boundary Layer (TBL) excitation. Experimental validation of the developed tools is conducted on a set of orthotropic sandwich composite structures. Initially, the wave propagation characteristics of a flat panel are measured and the experimental results are compared to the WFEM predictions. The later are used in order to formulate an Equivalent Single Layer (ESL) approach for the modelling of the spatial response of the panel within a dynamic stiffness matrix approach. The effect of the temperature of the structure as well as of the acoustic medium on the vibroacoustic response of the system is examined and analyzed. Subsequently, a model of the SYLDA structure, also made of an orthotropic sandwich material, is tested mainly in order to investigate the coupling nature between its various subsystems. The developed ESL modelling is used for an efficient calculation of the response of the structure in the lower frequency range, while for higher frequencies a hybrid WFEM/FEM formulation for modelling discontinuous structures is used.
