Abstract:
This research on the accuracy of diction in the placement of product placement in the soap opera Tukang Ojek Pengkolan (TOP) at the RCTI Television Station is interesting considering that there are advertising products that are inserted when the soap opera is running. Product placement has become a trend to be shown in soap operas and films in Indonesia with the aim of introducing products effectively because at the same time as the broadcast time, TOP soap operas are one of the soap operas that air on RCTI with high viewership ratings. The story in this soap opera is relatively light about the life of a motorcycle taxi driver. The problem in this research is how to choose an effective diction placement in the product placement of the soap opera Tukang Ojek Pengkolan and how to place the product placement in the soap opera Tukang Ojek Pangkalan when viewed from the nature of the advertisement. The purpose of this study was to find an effective choice of diction placement in the product placement of the soap opera Tukang Ojek Pengkolan and to describe the advertising nature of the product placement found in the soap opera Tukang Ojek Pengkolan. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data source in this study is the primary data source in the form of the soap opera Tukang Ojek Pengkolan (TOP).Keywords : Product placement, advertisement, soap opera TOP

Abstract:
During Ramadhan month in the 2000s, most Indonesian TV stations used to air Islamic-themed soap operas. However, the stories of those soap operas did not represent Islamic values. Rather than showing Islamic messages in their stories, most scenes of those soap operas were all about melodrama and mysticism. This research aims to analyze and compare two Islamic-labeled soap operas, Lorong Waktu 3 (2002) and Kiamat Sudah Dekat (2005), claimed as the real Islamic stories by Dedi Mizwar. While I intend to prove Mizwar's claim, I also will focus on examining the romantic scenes in both soap operas. I use qualitative methods to analyze the research objective by collecting primary sources digitally on YouTube and secondary sources in online-offline libraries. The videos of Mizwars' soap operas are available and open-accessed on YouTube, so obtaining the relevant primary sources is effortless. After researching, I found that melodrama and mysticism popularities of many Islamic labeled soap operas did not influence the romantic love stories of Mizwar's production. Both Lorong Waktu 3 and Kiamat Sudah Dekat beautifully convey how Islam confines a romantic relationship to Indonesian Muslim society. All in all, this research shows the filmmaker succeeded in criticizing and changing the image of most soap opera characters that previously did not represent Islamic lessons.

Abstract:
Soap opera is a potent cultural site for Malay women to imagine the meanings of modernity. Initially the Malaysian government promoted non-Western soap operas to circulate the state’s vision of alternative Asian-style modernities. Now the authorities have voiced a concern that some images and discourses of transnational modernity articulated even in non-Western soaps pose a threat to the cultural integrity of Malay women. This paper studies the significance of non-Western soaps to an understanding of gendered expectations and the progressive re-territorialization of the socio-political order in the context of an ethos of mediatized cultural globalization. Our referent is patriarchal Islamist state Malaysia. We conduct an empirical case study exploring Malay Muslim women’s negotiation and understanding of non-Western soap operas in Malaysia. Results from a series of guided in-depth interviews with 12 rural and urban Malay women enable us to understand how they negotiate their position as viewers of these non-Western soaps, given the criticism about the supposed immorality of these programs. We argue that Malay women act as strategic audiences who mobilize sophisticated viewing tactics that we call ‘watching competencies’ to negotiate the pleasures and potential conflicts of their access to non-Western soaps. This research indicates that Malay women are neither passive, vulnerable consumers of foreign soap, nor easily manipulated by those who claim authority; rather, they confidently assert their autonomy as consumer-citizens of a modern Islamic state.

Abstract:
There is a growing body of literature that addresses the relationships between film and television programmes and tourism. However, we argue in this paper that much of this research has not considered the critical issue of genre and how this may be a key factor in shaping tourist demand, expectation, experience and behaviour. In particular, we suggest that the distinctive characteristics of TV soap operas have been neglected, with much of the literature focused on English language, ‘blockbuster’ Hollywood produced film releases. In this paper, we address TV soap operas as genre in relation to audience consumption and their possible links with tourism. We discuss the defining features of soap operas including their serialisation, the level of audience exposure and emotional engagement along with their connections with personal and domestic everyday life. We note their being a platform for interpersonal, intercultural and inter-textual discourse. We argue in the context of film tourism, that viewing soap operas may promote identification, empathy, emotional connection and parasocial interactions, and that these may motivate some audience members to visit soap opera locations, and also contextualise their anticipation concerning what they might expect to experience.

This study focuses on the adaptation of Islamic-mystic magazines into religious soap operas in Indonesia. This study concludes that for the producers, Islamic soap opera plays an economic function: to get more audiences and more economic profit. But, for the audience, religious soap opera plays a cultural function: to maintain and reconfirm their traditional beliefs. It leads us to the theoretical conclusion that this adaptation practice is a mechanism of self-translation of Javanese culture.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of multiple and concurrent partnerships (MCPs) is a key driver of the SouthAfrican HIV epidemic. Given that the epidemic is stabilising though not yet declining, reducingthe frequency of MCPs should constitute part of South Africa’s prevention strategy. Soap operas, with their strong emphasis on sexual intrigue and infidelity, offer an ideal platform for addressingthe risk of MCP.This article presents quantitative research that explores the extent to which seven locally broadcastsoap operas include sex and HIV in their storylines. It also explores whether a connection iscurrently being made between MCPs and the risk of HIV infection. The findings show that sexis a key component of these soap operas, but is only linked to HIV in two per cent of cases. In comparison with their real-world occurrence, MCPs, transactional sex and intergenerationalrelationships are overrepresented in soap operas. Only eight per cent of soap operas mentionHIV, whether linked to sex or not. This is mostly through storylines featuring ‘stock’ HIV-positivecharacters.These findings feed into a wider discussion around the role and responsibilities of soap operas ina society grappling with a widespread HIV epidemic.

Abstract:
Cultivation theory is one of the theories of the effects of mass communication which assumes that continuous exposure to the media in the long run will provide an image and influence on the thoughts and perceptions of the audience. The media here is television. The audience begins to think that what happens in television programs also happens in their lives and reinforces their beliefs about social reality as well as the content on television. One of the television programs that provides an overview and strengthens the audience's beliefs about social reality that is in accordance with television content is soap operas and FTV. This study aims to see the magnitude of the influence of soap operas and FTV on the perspective of people, who watch soap operas and FTV continuously in the long term. This research uses the literature study method. Data collection techniques by paying attention to the responses of soap opera and FTV viewers through social media such as Tiktok comments, comments on Youtube, or seeing responses from interviews on YouTube and previous research journals. The results showed that the audience is quite influentiated, gets other sources of information, ideas, and awareness, which will change perceptions and even behavior if supported by other factors such as individual background or education level.

Abstract:
The influence of soap operas on other forms of television narrative has long been remarked upon by television scholars, especially with regards to the increasing tendency towards serialized plotlines that contemporary dramas have exhibited over the last three decades. Nonetheless, the full impact of the soap opera form on the structural principles of ongoing television narratives is yet to be explored. A crucial part of this lineage is the privileged role granted to communities in soaps, a narrative strategy that has been embraced by an array of other types of serialized programming, including ‘premium’ dramas. Drawing on Christine Geraghty’s writing on soap operas’ construction of community, this article will examine how this storytelling strategy is reworked by contemporary ‘premium’ programmes. Using Orange Is the New Black (2013‐19) as a case study, I will explore how the patterns of interplay between the individual and the group can shape both the form and diegesis of a programme. I will analyse how Orange Is the New Black gradually shifts from being structured around a single protagonist to being structured around the community as a whole, demonstrating that the tension between individual and collective identities can be a productive force that proliferates and expands the narrative of a programme.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the intersection of patriarchal hegemony, television viewing, domestic power relations and individual agency in the daily lives of rural Turkish women. More specifically, it analyzes the reception of daytime American soap operas by women in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology that combines ethnography, textual analysis and transnational feminist theory, this study investigates how women’s media experiences allow them to resist their traditional roles assigned by Islamic patriarchies.Among the major questions addressed are, “In what ways does soap viewership reflect the appropriation of anti-patriarchal modes of knowledge? How do soap operas allow women to question local gender norms? How, for example, does viewer identification with a female soap opera character committing adultery disrupt traditional gender norms, in which an act of adultery may lead to an honor killing?”Turkish women’s viewership habits as well as their pleasures from the anti-traditional plots contribute to the creation of a resistive female sphere. This study illustrates the multiple levels through which this female forum is socially constructed. I argue that women’s viewing pleasures and the actualization of a powerful female homosociality furnish the structural conditions under which alternative forms of meaning can gain a public momentum. Although respondents’ diverse uses of soap operas do not represent the formation of organized feminist protest, they, nevertheless, reflect these women’s dissatisfaction with the status quo. As such, soap viewership allows women to challenge traditional norms of gender and sexuality in the villages where this study was conducted.

Abstract:
Art Style | Art & Culture International Magazine Abstract Since the introduction of soft power theory by Joseph Nye, many political and media scientists as well as elite journalists have used this concept in order to analyze the impact of transnational media texts and their effects on local audiences. Despite its popularity, the soft power theory raises several questions that should be taken under consideration. First, it presupposes a direct link between a product’s attractiveness and the ability to influence other nations on a diplomatic level. Second, it underestimates the complexity of the reception process of media texts by the audiences and third, it does not take under consideration the complexity of the relationship between two countries which may be defined by historic and strategic elements and in which soft power may play only a limited role. Through this article we present the results of our empirical research concerning the reception of Turkish soap-operas by the audience in Greece. Undeniably, Turkish soap-operas attract Greek audiences for several reasons such as cultural proximity, identity negotiation, alternative storylines etc. and which may conduct activities in relation to these particular soap-operas (i.e. soap-opera induced tourism) or to Turkish civilization in general (i.e. learning Turkish language). However, this attraction should not be confounded with the desire to overcome long-enduring rivalries and negative feelings that are due to tangible as well as on emotional elements in order to follow Turkish government’s interests as soft power theory suggests. Therefore, the attraction of local audiences by transnational texts such as Turkish soap-operas, should not be considered as a de facto success of Turkey’s soft power. Consequently, soft power should rather be used as a communicational intentionality.

Abstract:
This paper looks at idioms drawn from a corpus of soap opera and compares their communicative functions to those performed by idioms in corpora of naturally-occurring conversation. In this study soap opera data is validated as a suitable tool for demonstrating the role that idioms play in spoken interaction. Soap operas, as well as other media genres, try to convey a believable linguistic world, exploiting idioms and providing contexts in which the pragmatic functions of idioms can be understood and analysed. This paper suggests that the analysis of idioms found in soap opera can contribute to the increase of knowledge and understanding concerning the communicative functions that idioms have in conversation. The data used in this study is drawn from the corpora of naturally-occurring conversation --- the Limerick Corpus of Irish English (LCIE) and the Cambridge and Nottingham Corpus of Discourse in English (CANCODE) --- and a corpus of the Irish soap opera, Fair City.

Abstract:
Television programming serves as an important source of information about health in general and alcohol issues in particular. This article reports on a study of drinking portrayals on the day time soap opera, “All My Children.” Major drinking themes over the past four and one-half years are reviewed. In addition, a study of thirty consecutive episodes in summer 1984 is reported and findings are compared to other research on soap opera drinking. Overall, “All My Children” was found to be doing a good job of accurately portraying drinking problems. Several good role models for social drinking and abstinence were presented and negative reinforcement for heavier or high risk drinking was frequent. Several recommendations are presented regarding ways that soap operas can take greater advantage of a unique opportunity for health education.

Abstract:

Television soaps and serials in private television channels have swept the Indian market in the last few decades. These soap operas have been upholding the socio-cultural patterns of the country through their contents. In the construction of Indian cultural landscape Indian women and their roles in society are the most vulnerable sites. The linkage of national identity and tradition with Indian women’s roles in society places them in a problematic position, given the patriarchal nature of Indian society. Soap operas on Indian television mostly depict women as homely and tradition-bound. Though there are portrayals of educated, professional women but they are also shown to find solace in the family. This paper tries to trace the image of the Indian Woman that has been endorsed by the Indian soap operas since its beginning and in doing so it tries to explore the implications of certain myths and ideologies that drive the story writers and the producers to de-recognize the changes in the contemporary society and to fall back on projecting stereotypical images; thus giving preference to social identity while ignoring individual identity of a woman.

Abstract:
<p>This research discusses multimedia-based hadith research in the reception study of living hadith studies in the form of film media. Muslim individuals in the current era are increasingly exploring religious teachings through social media, especially on YouTube. This phenomenon makes contemporary Muslim scholars convey religious teachings more in the form of video lectures and even package them more interestingly in the form of films that contain Islamic teaching values. Mapping multimedia-based hadith research, one of which focuses on the soap opera "Taqdir Divine Test from Allah" which attempts to portray a model of hadith mediatization packaged in the form of a religious soap opera. This article tries to explain the phenomenon of living hadith receptions presented from multimedia-based hadith research into film shows, including "Papi and Kacung, "The Santri", and "Kaya But Missqueen", the substance of which comes from the words of the Prophet Muhammad Saw. This research uses a qualitative method with direct observation in watching the soap opera film as a primary source and uses a literature study approach as a secondary source regarding topics related to this research. The results of the research show that this research was conducted to examine the trend model for multimedia-based hadith reception in soap operas in Indonesia. This research produces; First, the scenes played by soap opera actors illustrate the hadith in a concrete way so that the wider community can learn from it. Second, soap operas from films perceive hadith exegetically, aesthetically and functionally. Third, the hadith packaged in the form of a soap opera does not fully represent the reality of the hadith, but is sufficient as an alternative for the public to understand the hadith practically and can be used as a reference as a learning and moral education tool so that the positive values contained in the film can be understood by each individual with Good.</p>

Abstract:
Prolonged exposure to specific media programs has been observed to develop certain perceptions, attitudes and particular constructions of reality. As a powerful medium that captures the attention of a wide range of audiences, television (TV) soap operas shape and reshape the latter’s values and beliefs. This paper aims to determine what information co-productions of Philippine and Malaysian TV companies provide Filipino viewers in terms of knowledge constructions about Malaysia and its culture. Two TV soap operas, otherwise known as telenovela or teleserye, formed the bases of the investigation. Data were gathered from 80 discussants through Focus Group Discussions. Findings reveal that much of the mediated constructions of Malaysia and its culture have been limited to what the narrative yarns of the TV soap operas provide. Since the TV soap operas were so structured as to tell stories about cultural conflicts and human struggles, viewers’ constructions of Malaysia and its culture revolved mainly around interracial relations, arranged marriages, the practice of Islam, landmarks of Malaysia and the Chinese presence in that country.

Abstract:
This article examines a soap opera club of Sri Lankan Sinhalese migrant women in Melbourne and their collective engagement with television soap operas from the home country. Teledramas, as Sri Lankan Sinhalese-language soap operas are known, have a predominantly female viewership in Sri Lanka and also constitute a significant presence in the media diets of Sinhalese migrant women in Melbourne, and elsewhere in the world. Furthermore, at a women’s teledrama club affiliated to a Sri Lankan diasporic association, Sinhalese migrant women come together to exchange and archive reproduced DVDs of teledramas broadcast in Sri Lanka, bought from Sri Lankan grocery shops in Melbourne. This article builds on ethnographic research conducted at the teledrama club to show how what may appear to be an informal gathering of female teledrama fans is complexly interwoven into the expression of identity and belonging in Australian society. The article positions trans-Asia media flows in Australia within the everyday lives of migrants by examining the Sri Lankan soap opera club as a gendered space as well as a cultural space of identity, belonging and expression. This article finds that the teledrama club provided the women a symbolic national identity as an audience and the Sri Lankan narratives offered audiovisual access to the value systems of their distant geography and past.

Abstract:
This article attempts to map the portrayal of women in popular soap operas on television in India. It begins with the discourses around portrayal of women on Doordarshan in the pre-liberalisation era and goes on to analyse a few soap operas in the past one decade. With substantive review of visual texts, it aims to disprove the claim that there is a paradigm shift especially with respect to the portrayal of women in the contemporary and so-called progressive soap operas. It concludes by comparing all the phases of development of television in India with respect to construction of women and stating how very little and inconsequential change has occurred in this regard in spite of all the efforts from the state and the intellectual community.

Abstract:
Many attentions have been spotted to the potential drive and effect of television on anti-social behavior. The main argument lies on the frequent repetition of intense violent showed by television soap opera. Previous studies showed that children with heavy viewing habit of violent soap-operas were tend to imitate anti-social behavior. Children were considered to have limited skill to differentiate facts and fictions from television content, and this is where parental mediation (restrictive, active, or viewing) should take place to moderate the impact of television violence. The research was intended to explain the effect of watching soap-opera, parental mediation, and perceived reality on anti-social behavior of children. Using survey method, the study non-randomly collect data from children of age 10-12 years old in Semarang. Research finding shows considerable effect of soap-opera viewing, and perceived reality on anti-social behavior of children. However, no effect of parental mediation appeared on anti-social behavior of children.

Abstract:
The article deals with documentary soap operas, or the Polish version of docusoaps. This is a television genre that is a hybrid of observational documentary and elements typical of soap operas. In the introduction the author presents up to date research on docusoaps: she defines, following Margaret Lünenborg, the conditions that had to be met, in order for the genre to come into the existence, and she shows the circumstances in which it first appeared. She refers to the work of Richard Kilborn in order to present characteristic features of docusoap, and she uses the staging strategies for reality TV described by Elisabeth Klaus and Stephanie Lücke, in order to show staging strategies in docusoaps. In the main part of the article Kosińska-Krippner presents a short history of documentary soap operas, classification of its various types and the analysis of its components. She then defines this genre and describes its features. In the conclusion the author compares docusoaps and documentary soap operas, and shows the similarities and differences between the two genres, she also comments upon the value and usefulness of this genre.
