Abstract:
AbstractThe concept of the “African Personality” was celebrated by the continent's first post-colonial President, Kwame Nkrumah. Sweeping to power in Ghana's first general election in 1951, Nkrumah and his Convention People's Party—inspired by Marcus Garvey and W. E. B. Du Bois—espoused the doctrines of nationhood and self-reliance. The conceptual dimensions of Nkrumah's “African Personality” and the role he had in mind for Association Football (soccer) as an instrument of its expression are crucial points of this analysis. Here we attempt to locate Nkrumah's political ideal within the contemporary realities of the migration of young Ghanaian soccer talent, examining at the same time the socio-economic processes which act as “push” and “pull” mechanisms in the context of such migratory trends. While Nkrumah's “race-conscious,” pan-African forces have been utilized in the face of post-colonial identifications, soccer loyalties and objectives which are far more immediate and parochial in character continue to supersede those surrounding national or “racial” interests. Ghana's domestic game and national selection are riven by ethnic and regional hostilities while interlopers from Europe—some acting alone, others as emissaries for European soccer clubs—have laid down roots in Ghana, recognizing the nation as a breeding ground for talented, and comparatively cheap, young soccer talent. We argue that such inveterate ethno-regional rivalries, along with the conditions of neoliberal capitalism and its instrumental system of uneven geographical development, have provided entry points for the post-colonial forces so maligned by Nkrumah. Furthermore, we question the wisdom of notions of belonging based on bounded units such as “race” and attendant expressions of “race-consciousness.”

Abstract:
Football fields are the stage for major sporting competitions and essential for the practice of the sport, however, the intense traffic players during matches and training causes soil compaction. Compaction on soccer fields can damage the development of grass, affect the health of athletes, increasing the risk of injuries, and impairing gameplay. The present work aimed to identify the spatial distribution of compaction in low-performance soccer fields. Three soccer fields were selected, composed predominantly of potato grass (Paspalum notatum), which were divided into three sectors: S1- goalkeeper area (composed by the small and large area); S2–laterals (composed by the lateral ends of the field) and S3 - midfield (composed by the central interval between the large areas). Subsequently, the soil mechanical resistance to penetration (RMP) in the soil profile of 0–0.20m in each of the sectors was determined and the data obtained were submitted to analysis of variance. It was found that there is a presence and variation of soil compaction in the different sectors of the three soccer fields studied, with averages varying between 654.62kPa and 3788.58kPa. Compaction levels were identified in certain sectors that can be limited to the development of potato grass and harmful to the health of athletes. Thus, it is recommended to carry out decompaction and/or aeration operations in the fields to improve the physical conditions of the soil.

Abstract:
This article builds on prior theory and research on institutional logics and shows how a multisports club changes during its organizational life from an all amateur or voluntary logic to embody multiple logics simultaneously with different subunits being aligned with different organizational fields. The emergence of the professional logic for elite soccer in the presence of a volunteer logic caused a change in the structure of the club whereby all the units in the club became economically and legally autonomous. Soccer was divisionalized into soccer for everybody and soccer for the elite. The creation of a shareholding company and the use of an investment company which introduced the commercial logic were the next steps. This paper extends the literature by suggesting that different and opposing institutional logics such as the amateur, the professional, and commercial logics can coexist within a multisports club or, to put it another way, that the multisports club may belong to several organizational fields.

Abstract:
Zwick and Andrews (1999) argued that suburban American soccer fields merit critical academic attention because they highlight the practices of a dominant class. To gain an understanding of this specific field of power and privilege, I employed a multifaceted ethnographic approach to studying a group of upper-middle-class mothers whose children played youth soccer. I used Pierre Bourdieu’s (1984, 1993) sociological theories regarding the interplay between habitus and capital to analyze how the mothers shaped their sons’ youth sport experience to reproduce class status and social advantage in the next generation.

Abstract:
This study explores parents’ gendered meanings in their involvement with their son’s soccer participation. We use Bourdieu’s (1985; 1990; 2012) theoretical perspective of fields, positions, habitus and taking positions to examine the way in which parents in two Dutch soccer clubs reconstruct and negotiate gendered meanings through expressions, positioning and power relations within the field of their son’s soccer. The findings suggest that, within this field, a subdivision exists between the ‘main’ field, represented by masculine meanings, and the subordinated ‘serving-the-main’ field, represented by feminine values. The study contributes to a better understanding of the processes involved in the construction of gender in both subfields and highlights the way in which women who enter the ‘main’ field can be theorized as ‘space invaders’.

Abstract:
Using physical analogies when solving computational problems is not uncommon. The Electric Field Approach is such an analogy using potential fields for describing the situation in a robotic soccer match and for proposing the next step in optimizing the situation. The approach was developed and implemented during the summer of 2000 and was later used and tested during the fourth Robot Soccer World Cup in Melbourne, Australia. The results of the games prove that the approach is applicable in this narrow but interesting domain, combining artificial intelligence and robotics. The theory of the approach is general and can also be applied on various other domains. This is not the first potential field approach, but the ability of both handling navigation and manipulation of the environment is unique.

Abstract:
This works details the task o path planning in autonomous mobile robots using potential fields techniques. Among potential fields techniques to control robots, there are Khatibs Potential Field2 (KPF), Harmonic Potential Field (HPF), Oriented Potential Field (OPF) and Locally Oriented Potential Field (LOPF). The HPF, OPF and LOPF techniques are called Boundary Value Problem (BVP) based, bacause they are obtained from numerical solutions of Elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDE) in a well-defined boundary condition. These techniques go through a step of solving linear systems, in which is used iterative methods, that came from numerical solution of PDE. In this work, potential fields BVP based was studied and coded (using sequential and parallel architectures), to obtain results more quickly and reliably. And, finally, a comparative analyses of the various methods implemented are made. All methods are ready to be incorporated in the intelligent systens that are being developed by Warthog Robotics

This paper purpose is to study the possible impact that emotional biases might have on voters’ judgements when we use a retrospective voting framework. In order to do so we use soccer as the instrument that may influence mood and emotions. Our fixed effect models show that wins on the election weekend are associated with a increase in incumbent voting, indicating that emotional biases (and soccer) may, in fact, influence voters.

Abstract:
Background: Soccer players, independent of positions, perform high-intensity movements such as agility for short periods and have longer periods of low-intensity and rest during a soccer game. Agility is considered to be dependent on perceptional and decision-making factors and physical factors related to changes in directions. Most research has displayed no differences in different preplanned agility test within playing positions. However, no studies have been done on reactive agility within different positions on the soccer field. Aim: The purpose of the study was to compare if soccer players ́ reactive – and preplanned agility performance differs between their positions in the team. The study will also examine the level of correlation between results from reactive agility and preplanned agility. Methods: Thirty male soccer players, 17-19 years old, were tested in reactive agility and preplanned agility. The subjects were divided into three groups depending on their playing position, including defenders (n=10), midfielders (n=10) and forwards (n=10). Mean scores for both agility tests were analyzed with a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the criterion level for significance was set at 5 % (p ≤ 0.05). Correlations were performed to study the relationship between reactive agility and preplanned agility. Following limits were used to determine the strength of the value of Pearson correlation; r=.10 to .29 small, r=.30 to .49 medium, r=.50 to 1.0 large. Results: No statistical significant differences between defenders, midfielders and forwards in neither reactive agility (p=0.624) or preplanned agility (p=0.481) were perceived. There was a small correlation (r=0.24) between all studied results from the reactive – and preplanned agility test. When positions were correlated within the two test, the highest correlation between reactive agility and preplanned agility was found in midfielders with a medium correlation (r=0.47) while small correlations appeared within defenders (r=0.28) and forwards (r=-0.11). Conclusions: The findings of this thesis showed no statistical significant differences between playing positions in reactive agility nor in preplanned agility. The impact of the soccer players’ integration with different soccer coaches could be an explanation to the reactive agility results where some coaches may focus on developing perceptual skills more than other coaches. The absence of differences in preplanned agility may suggest that the physical abilities needed to perform the Zig-Zag test did not differ among defenders, midfielders or forwards. It can also be suggested that reactive agility and preplanned agility are two independent variables who do not share characteristics. Future research should focus on incorporating a more valid reactive agility test for soccer players and study larger samples who are specialized in their positions.

Abstract:
A great number of 475 unofficial and official soccer fields present on the digital cartographical data/2000, in Maceió city, was approached as a phenomenon related to leisure practice, sociability and the most popular sport among Brazilians: soccer. The unofficial soccer fields (campos de pelada) appear on urban scenery due to the need of free leisure places for communities, mainly, the poorer ones. This research goal is to understand the dynamic of unofficial soccer fields as places for sociability that compose the city free places system. Unofficial soccer fields as urban free places directed to leisure and social living, characterized by non-professional use, unprofessional soccer players, and without refinement in its physical structure, and that, in some aspects, contribute for urban environment quality. Before the diversity of observed aspects, physical, social, judicial and cultural, it was necessary to classify them in 8 categories, making possible thus the analysis and the definition of the diferences between unofficial and official soccer fields. Soccer is a collective sport which requires competitive and cooperative spirit, considering that cooperation, in this research, is used as a word and action intensely experienced into the daily of poor communities, among them, the one in the popular Benedito Bentes sector. In this place, the deepening of the study about the 3 unofficial soccer fields made possible the perception of the importance degree that they have for the community and the city, several times assuming the function of a square. The extinction of these urban places may cause a qualitative loss in the community daily life because they are free leisure and social living places.

Abstract: This dissertation is the result of a survey of football supporter groups throughout the twentieth century in Brazil, concerned with their relations to violence in different periods of this century, a time of affirmation and dissemination of football in the country. The aim is to show how contemporary forms of collective organizations of fans own their current constitution to earlier ones, detaching the football supporter groups and their younger fans from a wave of violent self-genesis. Starting from landmarks of collective forms of supporting, such as club membership in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the early decades of the century, uniformed and organized supporter groups in the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro between the 1940s and 1960s, and the birth and spread of young supporters and young supporting groups until 1995, year of the tragedy in the Pacaembu stadium, it can be observed that supporting is an activity with its own logic and normative rules. These are specially based on "clubism" and other internal and external representations to football, dear to the young fans. Thus, rivalries and violence are related to matters spanning beyond the sport itself, dialoguing with the relations of color and class, the clashes between different groups within the metropolis, the need to exercise social behavior imposed by masculinity and the desire to participate as an active agent of the spectacle of football, seeking recognition and the role of central supporters in sports, either by cheering or by violence. The methodology and sources used were a literature review on violence in sport and supporting groups, primary sources, interviews with members of the "Gaviões da Fiel" supporting group, and field observations of the "Gaviões" in its dissenting group, the "Movimento Rua São Jorge"

Petten, Irene. "From rock stars to soccer moms : emergence, growth, continuity and change in the body modification field." Thesis, University of Reading, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.553085.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of a particular cultural preference, "body modification" (i.e. the 'atypical' practices of tattoo, piercing, scarification, suspension and related practices), in the United Kingdom and United States. In the short span of about thirty years these practices have crept from the margins toward the mainstream and have lost a degree of their deviant status in the process. In spite of the geographic differences between body modifiers, meanings and motivations are remarkably similar across a number of themes. Yet the root of these similarities and growth in practice stems mainly from the actions of body modifiers themselves rather than swooping external, global market forces that would appropriate body modifiers' culture. Using Bourdieu's concept of the "field" as an orienting tool to explore culture, this thesis draws upon life history interviews with people who conduct body modifications, historical record, law and legal debates, questionnaire data, an abbreviated ethnography and letters between founding members of the field. It looks at how body modification emerges, grows, and maintains continuity of cultural content and changes through interactions between internal and external institutions, producers and consumers. The intertwined processes of legitimation, identification and professionalization play a crucial role in structurating the field to allow for growth and popularity. As a set of cultural practices that emerged from the margins of cultural preferences, the body modification field was shaped and continues to be shaped by the hostile environment from which it emerged, even though public reception to body modification is no longer quite as antagonistic as it once was. Emerging at a time when body modification was truly deviant from the norm, early body modifiers created strong frameworks of meaning and underlying values that were aimed at normalizing practices to a wider public, being inclusive to gain members and also embraced a wide variety of body modification practices. When the field began to grow and some body modifiers had formally organized, elite members forcefully attempted to draw practice away from the more 'extreme' end of body modification. This resulted in opposing efforts to reassert core field values, but as the numbers of both consumers and producers continued to grow the field was riddled with competition and boundary struggles. Gaining a modicum of legitimacy within the wider scope of cultural preferences and gaining new members caused tension over status hierarchies and the growth of more 'extreme' practices.

This work is about the pick up soccer games played at the Aterro do Flamengo, a public park at Rio de Janeiro, from fieldwork with Ellite Futebol Clube. Since its inauguration in 1965, it has been created an identification between the Aterro and the pick up soccer game players, especially because with the growth of the city there were less land or open spaces for the practice of the amateur soccer. The courts from the park had also the purpose to meet this need. Founded in 1998, Ellite is formed by college friends who see in the pick up games played all Wednesdays a way to keep the friendship. It is one of several teams that make the fields of the Aterro like their home and make that a space of sociability. They play, according to them, an organized pick up game, which somehow contradicts the imagination of improvisation and spontaneity of this practice. The pick up soccer games studied here, from the example of Ellite, have particular characteristics that make us realize how urban public space is rich in contrast, diversity and conflict.

Many different tests have been developt, but currently only five of these tests are most commonly used: Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test (YIRT), Yo-Yo intermittent endurance test (YIET), Multi-sprint-test, Beep-test and Cooper-test. Presently there is no definitive conclusion regarding which of these tests is most suitable for soccer players. Therefore the present study aimed to, on the basis of previous studies evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the five most commonly used field test; to analyze the physiological requirements on soccer players with respect to their aerobic and anaerobic capacity; and last to compare among the five field tests and evaluate the validity of the field tests through comparison of field tests results with results from laboratory and soccer matches. During soccer match about 75-96 % of the energy is provided by the aerobic systems, while the rest, 4-25 %, is provided by the anaerobic systems. This fits approximately most of the results from both field tests and laboratory tests through measurement of either pulse, running distance, VO2max or lactate. Among the five tests, Yo-Yo tests (YIRT and YIET) has the best correlation to soccer match with respect to physiological demands on both aerobic and anaerobic capacities. Among the different Yo-Yo tests YIRT2 seems to be the best compared to YIET1, YIET2 and YIRT1.

Abstract:
In Scandinavia, there are over 3,000 soccer fields with artificial turf, with approximately 300 of them equipped with subsurface hydronic heating systems. These heated fields enable year-round training and games, while also preventing injuries from slippery turf and frozen ground conditions. Most heated soccer fields in Scandinavia rely on district heating as a heat source, with only a few utilizing ground source heat pump systems (GSHP). However, the potential for broader adoption of GSHP systems appears promising due to their significantly lower energy costs. This paper analyzes the use of GSHPs for subsurface heating of soccer fields with artificial turf, examining design, functional characteristics, and energy cost savings. Additionally, it discusses market conditions conducive to broader GSHP system adoption, with a focus on the Scandinavian countries.

Abstract:
Abstract The mobile platform is an attractive educational tool that has brought to myriad effective benefits for a variety of the application fields. Furthermore, application of the mobile platform to engineering education has greatly assisted the engineering students’ firsthand experiences in college. However, most of the robotics classes offered today are concentrating on mechatronics and software education. For the advancement, this paper develops the mobile platform for the effective curriculum in teaching design and fabrication of robots in the house. The design of the proposed mobile platform bases on the knowledge of the majors subject from mechanical engineering. Through the dynamic simulation, the possibility of an introduction of the developed platform to robotics education is verified. Dynamic simulation experiments with the maximum velocity and acceleration of this system are carried out to check the application for educational purposes. As a final step, components of the platform are fabricated and assembled.

Full text
Abstract:
The Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Office was established in 1982 to carry out the federal government’s responsibilities for low-level radioactive (LLR) waste management in Canada. In this capacity, the Office operates programs to characterize, delineate, decontaminate and consolidate historic LLR waste for interim and long-term storage. The Office is currently the proponent of the Port Hope Area Initiative; a program directed at the development and implementation of a safe, local long-term management solution for historic LLR waste in the Port Hope area. A legal agreement between the Government of Canada and the host community provides the framework for the implementation of the Port Hope Project. Specifically, the agreement requires that the surface of the long-term LLR waste management facility be “conducive to passive and active recreational uses such as soccer fields and baseball diamonds.” However, there are currently no examples of licensed LLR waste management facilities in Canada that permit recreational use. Such an end use presents challenges with respect to engineering and design, health and safety and landscape planning. This paper presents the cover system design, the environmental effects assessment and the landscape planning processes that were undertaken in support of the recreational end use of the Port Hope long-term LLR waste management facility.
