Full textThe knee Injuries in Women Soccer Players in South Africa The Knee is a common site for injuries in soccer players. The reasons for the increased rates of knee injuries in women soccer players are not clear, but some theories suggested the reason to lie in the difference in anatomy. This research investigate the prevalence of knee injuries in women soccer players in South Africa and sought to find out whether three of the anatomical factors (Q-angle, pelvic width and Intercondylar notch width) have a role in increasing knee injuries in these individuals. The study design was case –control study. Methodology: Twenty four players of South Africa women soccer team (Under 23) participated in this study. X-rays of the hip were taken and the Q-angles were thereafter measured manually. Association between anatomical factors and knee injuries were determined. The result of this study showed that 17% of the players were having non contact knee injuries. Statistical analysis showed no significant relation between knee injuries among women soccer players and each of the anatomical factors. The P-values of both t-test and ANOVA test were larger than the 0.05 level of significance. The study found that the prevalence of knee injuries among the young women playing for the South African national team U-23 was relatively high. However, this study could not identify significant relationship between the anatomical risk factors and the incidences of knee injuries among the participants.

Abstract: Women's football practice is historically marked by concessions, infiltrations, and transgressions and conquers. Although women have been present in every stage of football's sociogenesis, taking part as spectators and also practicing it, the space and visibility given to women's football highlight the innocuousness towards the sport as a career plan. Bearing such scenario, this research aims to analyze the clubs and players projects towards football as a real career plan, as well as the legal regularization of the employment relationship of the athletes. For this purpose, it was done a case study with three teams disputing the women's football Paulista Championship in 2011, by means of field diary, semi-structured interviews with directors and coaches, and focus groups with athletes. The analyzed teams showed structural disparities permeated by different issues that lead to a detachment and closeness of a professional career. The players' project shows the recognition of the sport as a professional career, nevertheless surrounded by barriers, and lack of structure and employment legitimacy. On the other hand, by analyzing the legislation, it is possible to identify that the players act in fact professionals, highlighting the illegality of the clubs employment relationship, once they do not meet the standards and rights granted by the legislation to the players. Considering the legitimacy of women's football as a career, we point to the need of CBF, federations and affiliated clubs, to grant sustainability for women's football by organizing championships and helping towards women's teams in clubs that currently maintain professional teams

Full textBackground: Physical pain affects mental performance as well as many physical factors and is often associated with injuries. Injuries are common among athletes and a higher level of play coheres with a higher prevalence of injuries. Since injuries are so common among high-level athletes, it is reasonable to assume that pain is also connected to the high level of play. Also, since experiencing pain has its side-effects, it is interesting to investigate physical pain among high-level athletes. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the presence and experience of pain among high-level female soccer players in Sweden, as well as their relationship to pain. Method: 68 players between 14-30 years old who had played at a high level for 1-13 years participated in the study. A questionnaire was used to collect the data and SPSS was used to analyse it with descriptive statistics. Results: 50 % of the players rated their pain extent before, during and after practices and games with 3 or more on a scale from 1-5, where 1 is “no extent” and 5 is “high extent”. The results were scattered regarding the influence pain had on carefulness, ability, potential, emotions and concentration, but the players felt that pain had the biggest influence on their ability to play and their emotional wellbeing. 42.65% of the players continue as normal when experiencing pain during practice and 44.12% of them continue but take it easier, while 83.82% continue as normal when experiencing pain during game. All of them thought that playing and practicing with pain could lead to future complications in some way. Conclusion: Most of the players struggled with pain to varying degrees. Even though being convinced that playing with pain can lead to complications, they kept on playing when they experienced pain themselves.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyze the sporting career of Eduarda Marranghello Luizelli (Duda) as a soccer player and as a director working in the training of athletes. The study is based on theoretical frameworks related to women's participation in sport, specifically in soccer considering biographical narratives. The methodology has a qualitative bias with theoretical and methodological foundation in Oral History, used as a procedure for the production of sources, focusing on the history of life. It was conducted 16 interviews with people who maintain a relationship with the Duda’s life trajectory as family members, former players and soccer professionals working in the soccer schools that she runs. These interviews were collated with other documents, many of them part of Duda’s personal collection, and this dialogue emerged two chapters entitled: First time: Duda player and second time: Duda director. The first main theme discusses how was Duda’s inclusion in the sport and how consolidated her career as a soccer player. The second main theme relates to Duda’s role as a director of a soccer school. From the analysis it was realized that family support was the key to the permanence and continuity in the sport, as well as helped throughout her sporting career. It was possible to verify that her experiences in Italian soccer and the Brazilian national team, not only provided realization of moments, but also they were marked by difficulties and frustrations. It was observed that Duda’s career in the Sport Club International was fraught with struggles and victories for the sport as highlighting her name as a women’s soccer reference. It was also noted that Duda turned her name into a brand through her schools and consolidated her representation in the sport as a trainer of athletes. Some tensions were evident with regard to sports managed by women, especially in the absence of females in leadership positions. It is concluded that Duda was and still is one of the women’s soccer developer in Rio Grande do Sul, and that her representation as a soccer player influenced the careers of many athletes and despite the obstacles and adversities faced, her sporting career is recognized on the national scene.

The thesis Soccer and gender in Bahia: permanent concerns (1970 - 1990) has the objective of telling and propagading the histories of footballers women in the hinterland of Bahia between the 1970s and 1990s, it aims to break down the silence and invisibility of them, aspects that are very usual in the history of Brazilian women's football. Oral history was the method used in the interviews with women who revealed their everyday sociability, their struggles, in short, their stories in the sport. These stories show that women's football in Bahia was expanding during the 80s. The hypothesis that guided this study was based on the notion that prejudice is a propeller of so many silencies. The testimony of the following women contributed to this research: Maria da Conceicao Araujo, Nara Rúbia Muniz Chaves Pinheiro, Maria Cruz Neide Sampaio, Jorge Sampaio Suely Ribeiro Morbek, Cleyde Regina Araujo, Neumanci Gonçalves Ferreira, Ferreira de Oliveira Ivonete Solange Santos and Bastos. Based on the investigations, this study discloses the stories of women players allowing to follow the path took by the women's football in Bahia. The history starts with the incipient babas in Jequié in the 70s until his alleged consolidation in the 80s, well represented by players from Feira de Santana, it also includes a part of the history of the Brazilian Women's Soccer team during the 90s, based on the interview of Solange S. Bastos. Based on contributions from studies in the areas of History, History of Physical Education and Gender has been possible to articulate stories of footballer women with issues such as prejudice, lack of infrastructure and credibility, issues that marked the history of the sport in the country. Soccer has been considered a space that celebrates virility and strength, male attributes, in such that it took lots of dedication and courage for women to get in this well kept places, places where female participation "should" allowed only in the stands. However, with the boldness and strength, they invade the lawns and keep on pushing to make soccer, in fact, a plural and democratic environment that represents a national history

The objective of this study is to analyze the content of the texts, published in the magazine Placar about the Brazilian women's soccer team in World Cup years (1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015) and Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012), two of the main competitions of this modality. To reach the results, the theoretical-methodological contributions of the Content Analysis were used, which directed the examination of journalistic texts. There were 58 publications mentioning the Brazilian female soccer team, arranged in 34 of the 130 editions that were accessed. Considering the number of editions and texts published during the 12 years analyzed, the low frequency of publications about the female soccer team in the magazine Placar was verified, when compared to other modalities, specially, the masculine soccer. Moreover, in the analysis of the content of the texts it was also verified that the magazine alluded about categories such as gender, class, race and ethnicity when dealing with the players of the women‟s team. From 2004, the contents emphasize the representation of the Brazilian women's soccer team by exposing Marta and Cristiane, who are exalted by the magazine, because of the performance of these athletes in the team and their individual achievements. Through this study, it is possible to conclude that Placar reflects the fight of the female players soccer when reporting trajectories and difficulties of athletes that effectively represented the Brazilian female team on competitions. However, the magazine reinforces the prejudice, in order to compare those athletes to others female players soccer (models), which represent the normative hegemonic standards of gender, class and race. The terms used by the magazine to refer to the players of the team are essentialist and demonstrate the strategies of spectacularization of the bodies which were offered by the field of journalism and sports, as well as used by the athletes in attempt to gain legitimacy. It is understood that the low frequency of appearance of women's team in the magazine resulted in the invisibility of women's football among the public.

The scope of this study is a social research and presents itself as ethnography. This research investigates how gender identities of the female soccer players who practice this sport as leisure in two spaces in the city of Goiânia, Goiás are experienced and perceived in these locations. As an instrument for data collection it was used the observations of participants as well as the implementation of socio-economic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The analysis and description of the data enabled us to understand how gender identifications of these women are perceived and how these female players act in spaces/places socially elected by common sense as predominantly male, specifically the soccer field.

The aim of this dissertation is to verify and analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the coverage news about Brazil women's national football team made in the sports section of Folha de S. Paulo newspaper between 1991 and 2011, in an attempt to unravel if underneath the publications made in this temporality existed an intention to criticize the women's game and its players. To that end, was opted for the adoption of procedures of the so called content analysis methodology, as for it provides instruments to the researchers on analysis of several types of discourses, among those, the ones found in newspapers. Through the above mentioned delimitations, it was found that over the twenty (20) years investigated, Folha de S. Paulo published six hundred and twenty-two (622) features, addressing or somehow referring to the women's team. From the analysis of these figures, it was found that the frequency of files related to the Brazilian team on the newspaper sports pages was low, with an average of 31.1 publications per year. However, when analyzing the discursive content of the reports, it was found that despite not providing great visibility, Folha de S.Paulo did not treat the women's team and its players with prejudice, lowering them in status in relation to the men's team and its players. On the contrary, its coverage was characterized by explicit and implicit exaltation of national teams and players, exerting positive influence in the structuring of an individual and social habitus, free of prejudices related to the possibilities of women in football. This aspect refutes the fourth hypothesis (4th) of this study, which conveyed the idea that concealed under the discursive content of the publications; there had been the intention of Folha de S.Paulo in criticizing women's football and its players, in so far as this sport form was socially structured as a male and masculinizing realm.

Full textThis doctoral thesis has four objectives: to determine the characteristics and management types adopted by women’s football clubs in Barcelona; to know the profile of the members in those clubs, as well as the internal and external relations of the club; to analyse the position of women's teams and women within the club; and finally to propose a classification of clubs depending on the situation of women's teams within the club based on feminist theories and another one based on the structural characteristics of clubs. Techniques for obtaining the results were questionnaire-based face-to-face interviews to 26 of 32 clubs with women’s football in Barcelona city, and a semi-structured interview with key informants selected by intentional sample (n: 6). The results indicate that the presence of women in the football clubs of the city is still very low and overdue, with an important underrepresentation as coach and as member of the boards of the clubs. In addition, there is a worrying lack of female teams at a grassroots levels. The relations and the distributions of resources of the club is also analysed, focusing into the dialectic between women’s only football clubs or mixed football clubs. Based on the data analysis and the theory review, the author proposes two different clubs classification on Women's Football team related with the structural characteristics of clubs and the feminist theories.

Full textAbstract Aim The aim of this study was to compare a Swedish top league soccer team to the Swedish national team during a competitive game. Comparisons included measurements in player load, total distance covered, high-speed running (HL), very high-speed running (MHL) and sprint (S). The research questions were: Is there a difference in player load and total distance covered between the teams? Is there a difference in player load and total distance covered between different playing positions? Is there a difference in HL, MHL and S in performed and meters covered between different positions and between the two teams? Method The number of participants were eight female soccer players (age 27±1,8, length 168±4,7, weight 65±4,7). They played in the top of the league during the season of 2017. A GPS system (MinimaxX S4) was used to collect data. The game was played on nature grass in the last round of the season. The National team values were supplied by SVFF where 12 players participated (age 28±4,5, length 174±5, weight 64±4,2). Results The Swedish league team had 186 higher player load than the National team where no significant difference was found. Furthermore, the Swedish league team’s midfielders were loaded 19 % more than the national team’s. The Swedish league attackers were loaded 33 % more than the national team’s. The difference in player load between the defenders was 7 % higher for the Swedish league team’s. The Swedish league team covered 15 % more meters in total distance where no significant difference was seen. All players in the Swedish league team covered the longest distance. There were no significant difference between number of performed and meters covered in HL, MHL and S. The Swedish league team covered 1 % more meters HL and 13 % more meters MHL than the National team. The National team covered 3 % more meter S than the Swedish league team. The National team performed 19 % more HL and 9 % more MHL than the Swedish league team. In total, the National team performed more HL, MHL and S than the Swedish league team. Conclusion No significant difference was found between the two teams. Although, the National team covered higher number of S performed and meters which is in accordance to previous surveys which shows more high-speed actions is performed in higher competition levels during a game. The survey should be expanded to further examine the demands for women’s soccer.

Full textOBJECTIVE: to analyze the contribution of isokinetic muscular strength of dominant knee and trunk flexors and extensors in the acquisition of bone mass in the correspondent regions that these forces are applied in female soccer players. METHODS: twenty-two female soccer athletes (GAF) were compared with 20 matched-controls (GC). The bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) were evaluated in whole body, lumbar spine and dominant hip (femoral neck and total hip) with the paediatric software of Hologic QDR (Discovery model, Bedford, MA, USA). From whole body scan, the variables of body composition and bone mass of dominant leg, trunk and head were also determined. The muscular strength of flexion and extension movements in dominant knee and trunk were evaluated with the Biodex Multi-joint System 3 (Shirley, NY, USA) with 60°/s, and 5 repetitions at concentric/eccentric mode. The concentric variables peak torque, maximal repetition total work and total work of flexors and extensors were considered. Statistical analysis was performed using Student\'s t-test to compare groups and additionally Pearson\'s correlation coefficient and linear regression analysis to GAF. RESULTS: Both groups were similar regarding age, weight, height, race and calcium intake (p>0.05), however GAF presented a higher percentage of lean body mass and a lower percentage of body fat compared to GC (p<0.001). All loaded sites during exercise had significantly higher values of bone mass for GAF, and so for all isokinetic concentric strength variables of dominant knee and trunk (p<0.05 e p<0.001). Bone mass variables of GAF regions presented positive correlations with weight, body mass index, total and trunk lean mass. The BMD of any region presents significant correlations with variables of strength performance. Nevertheless, all strength variables of trunk flexors were positively correlated with BMC of whole body and trunk, so as knee dominant extensors with BMC of hip and dominant leg. CONCLUSION: muscular strength exerted a positive contribution to BMC acquisition at specifics sites. These results of positive correlation between force and bone mineral quantity of specific sites give us further evidences of the muscle strength role in the acquisition of regional bone mass.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the experience of national women soccer players in occupation, how career planning influences their future and whether or not they succeeded. 32 subjects were national soccer players who participated in this study. The research methods included interviews and open-mind questionnaires. The main explorations of this research are: 1.The national women soccer players who terminated their sports career due to injure and economic problems. 2.In career planning, it was very important to set a clear path due to the fact that national women soccer players have to balance many tasks and roles at the same time. Suggestions were to incorporate your habits, professional skills and interests while doing the planning. Only 50% of the players made plans while on the national team. 3.Most of the national women soccer players work in sports related industry, such as teachers, coaches…etc, very few of them work in the office. No matter the career path chosen, overall situation was well. 4.Most of the national women soccer players did not have problems in developing a career after retirement. On the other hand, there were problems which include lack of work experience, professional knowledge and skills in that field. 5.The national women soccer players anticipate the educational department to work with teacher training institutes. In order to train professional knowledge and develop skills. Language learning is very important. In addition, they can set up websites and put on some information about career planning, which could make career planning easier for players. From doing literature reviews and surveys, this study made several suggestions. For the ending, it will provide some advice to athletes who are still playing soccer at the present moment and administration departments in the sporting world.

Shi-Chih Soccer Club (SCSC), established in 2007, is the first amateur Women''s soccer team. In order to search for stage and to prove their abilities, the members of SCSC working in all parts of Taiwan in weekdays get together in weekends to join the Taiwan Ladies League. In the process of taking part in matches, SCSC used to be deficient in funds and difficult in integrating all the internal views, but the members still do their best to take into account the family, job, and studies. The career planning of most athletics in Taiwan is to become teachers or coaches, but the members of SCSC don''t think so. All of them, born in the 1970s and the 1980s, have different career planning and suggest that young women''s soccer players in Taiwan should make their career planning early and learn interdisciplinarily. What is more, some consider that the government should review the system of physical education class. As far as the future of Taiwanese women''s soccer is concerned, the interviewees in this report consider that it can strengthen the capabilities for the grassroots high school players at the beginning, and it should hurry the development of women''s Futsal.

Scoring goals is a key factor in winning soccer matches. In order to score goals, attacking players needs to constantly create shooting opportunities. Shooting opportunities can be broadly divided into team tactics, individual dribbling skills, and dead ball situations. A successful offensive tactics can create opportunities to score goals but must have appropriate shooting techniques to score. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of different offensive tactics and shooting techniques on scoring in the highest level of women’s soccer, the National Women’s Soccer League. Method: The last offensive tactics before shooting, the game time of shooting, the shooting techniques as well as shooting results from 91 games 1161 offensive shooting, 149 goals of 2016 NWSL were recorded by 2 female collegiate division I soccer players using Simi Scout software. Chi-square tests of goodness of fit and Chi-square tests of independence were used for statistical analyses. The statistical significant level was set to α =.05. Results: 1. There was a high association between the goal and the first 15 minutes of the overtime. 2. There were high associations between the goal and both cross passes to far-post and cross passes to near-post. 3. Breakaway shot, chip shot, and other shots had high associations with goals. 4. Central offenses were executed mainly with through passes followed by breakaway shots or chip shots, with general passes, exchange passes, or passes back followed by driven shots; side offenses were executed mainly with cross passes to near-post followed by driven shots and chip shots; side air offenses was mainly executed with side loft passes toward the penalty area followed by headshots. Conclusions: In NWSL, the highest shooting percentage was from side loft passes towards the penalty area followed by headers. Future studies should continue to analyze more and a variety of international women’s soccer games.

At the time interval that makes the same year of selection, there are children and youth with almost one year of age difference, is called Relative Age. The theoretical advantage that this event gives children who were born first is called of Relative Age Effect (RIL). In football, the effect of relative age stands out even more, due to the fact that young players are grouped by age with periods of 2 years of birth. The main objective of this study was to analyze the effect of relative age on the female soccer athletes selected for the Senior European Championship (2017) and the U17 European Championship (2018) and to observe the effect of relative age taking into account the position in the field. The sample consisted of 537 female soccer players, of whom 64 were goalkeepers, 173 defenders, 171 middle and 119 advanced. The number of participants in the European Women's Championship at the senior level was 368 and in the Sub17 Championship, it was 159. The analyses were carried out with SPSS software, version (25.0) and the level of significance established at p≤0.05.At the senior level, no significant differences were found regarding the distribution of female players by the quarter of birth, as well as the level of functional positions in the field. At sub-17 level, significant differences were found regarding the distribution of female players by the quarter of birth, and in functional positions, especially in the specific positions of goalkeepers and defenders.Through this work, it was possible to conclude that there is no presence of the EIR in the Senior Women's European Championship, but that there is the presence of the EIR in the Women's U17 European Championship.

Full textIntroduction: Participation of young females in soccer has started to increase in the past few years. Females participating in soccer are more vulnerable to injuries than males due to the nature of the sport especially because the sport is characterised as a vigorous, high intensity, intermittent ball and contact activity. Objective: This study sought to determine the epidemiology of injuries in high school female soccer players in the eThekwini district. Method: A quantitative approach using a cross sectional survey was used to determine the epidemiology of injuries in female high school soccer players in the eThekwini district. One-hundred-and-ninety-seven female high school soccer players, between the ages of 14 to 19 years who have played soccer for at least one season, from 27 female high schools in the eThekwini district were invited to participate. A self-administered questionnaire was used to determine the demographic profile of the players and the reported prevalence of injuries in the soccer players. The study also determined the profile of soccer related injuries, management of injuries, identified risk factors for injury, and compared injuries occurring during training and during matches. Results: Out of a total of 85 respondents only 31 sustained injuries. The injury prevalence for the season was 36.5%. Only 61 injuries (71.8%) were reported by the injured players. The rate of injury was 90 per 1000 athlete exposure hours during the season. Only two female players reported the five injuries while all 29 female players sustained at least one injury. The defenders (31.7%) and midfielders (28.6%) sustained the most injuries. Most injuries reported were contact in nature (12.9%). More injuries occurred during training (12.9%) rather than during matches (8.2%). The lower extremity (77.8%) was injured more than the upper extremity (22.2%). The knee (22.2%) and ankle (15.9%) were the most frequently injured body parts. Muscle injury (23.5%) was the most commonly reported followed by bruising (10.6%). Conclusion: Prevalence of injuries was high in the cohort studied. The lower limb, specifically the knee and ankle were most commonly injured. Muscle injury and bruising were the most common injury affecting the lower extremity. It is recommended that the study be extended to a larger cohort of school children.

Purpose: To analyze and compare the training models and managements among three different teams, including Colorado RUSH team, Canberra United team and Vancouver Whitecaps team. Methods: The relevant information were collected by attending every team’s training seasons, and the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis was used to compare the training models and managements among three teams. Results: The senior management, administrative and technical departments were founded in each team. The Colorado RUSH team had less marketing strategies than the others. The Colorado RUSH team added more rest sessions in the training program for adapting the high altitude environment. The tactical strategy of Canberra United team emphasized the control of ground ball pass, and both the Colorado RUSH and Vancouver Whitecaps teams focused on full-court press and quick attack with long ball pass. The duration of pre-season in the three teams had approximately 3 to 4 weeks, and the microcycle of the in-season emphasized the physical training sessions and recovery/regeneration sessions. Conclusion: The Australia, United States and Canada have a place in the world women soccer, because of the development of soccer clubs and the competitive professional or semi-professional league. The coaches in the three teams are good at organizing training program and inspiring athletes to face the continuous and intensive competitions. The coaches designed the tactics and training program according to the athletic characteristics, and used the periodized and scientific training methods to help athletes to achieve peak performance.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the pressure sources during competition and the methods, strategies, effects in response to competition stress among elite female soccer players. Through depth interviews, the players’ usual training experience and competition experience were recorded and discussed. A total of 15 elite soccer players participating in the international competitions from 2010 to 2015 were recruited in this study. Data were analyzed and there were three findings. First, the main pressure sources of elite female soccer players during usual training were the expectations from the coaches, the inability to break their and partners’ own records. Second, the pressure sources before competition were that the expectations from the audience and the society, the expectations from the coaches and their parents, and the strength of their competitors. Third, the pressure sources during competition were their worst condition, the expectation from the coaches and their parents, and the scores behind their opposite. The main strategies to reduce pressure were self-talk, positive thinking, focusing on the court and imagery. Some of the players were not satisfied with the coach in the role of mental skills training. In hence, systematic, methodical mental skills training courses are the indispensable key to a successful soccer training program.

Full textSocialisation is an interactive reciprocal process that shapes the way individuals think, act and make decisions. Through the sport socialisation process, over time individuals acquire beliefs and behaviours that affect other areas of their life, including education, family relations and peer interactions. Socialisation affects the lives of the participant’s significant others and socialising agents, who demonstrate changes in the way they view women’s football, interact with the player and assist with domestic duties. These processes occur in the public and private spheres and are closely associated with cultural perspectives of masculine and feminine gender identity construction. Four theories underpin the research, namely figurational theory, critical feminism, interactionism and cognitive development theory. This thesis examines the effects of female football participation in family dynamics, school and community relations, as well as individual identity formation and the challenges and benefits related to participation. For this comprehensive case study approach mixed methods were used (i.e. interviews, focus groups and questionnaires). The study focused on 21 cases of female football players in two South African locations, Johannesburg and Cape Town. Interviews were conducted with 21 players that played in leagues organised by the South African Football Association. In each location there was a senior team that played in the provincial leagues and an under-15 team that played in the regional leagues. Interviews were conducted with 48 significant others (individuals who influence the self-esteem, emotions and behaviour of a person, including mothers, fathers, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents), four coaches, seven administrators, and eleven school representatives. Focus groups took place at four schools in each location in which 258 students participated. Questionnaires were conducted in the communities around each of the selected schools, incorporating the perspectives of 169 respondents. The data was analysed with the assistance of Atlas.ti 6.2 and SPSS 20. Football in South Africa occurs within a context of poverty with the legacy of apartheid remaining in terms of limited access to resources, poor provision of sports facilities, unemployment, fragmented families, and lack of educational opportunities. These factors continued to affect the prospects of sport participation. Understanding hegemonic masculinity as the dominant ideology in the townships provides a background to analyse how men control the limited physical resources and public sport spaces, requiring girls to gain access through a male proxy or gatekeeper. Once females acquire access they are able to gain acceptable and legitimacy through demonstrating their competencies and success in competitions. Socialisation through sport occurs as girls are occupied in safe, controlled spaces with adult supervision rather than become involved in deviant behaviours. In these settings female footballers acquired positive behaviours and improved attributes such as time management, discipline, respect and self-efficacy. Their participation resulted in a reduction of social distance between them and their teacher-coaches, which improved the learning climate fostering trusting relationships. As the girls were socialised into football, some adopted masculine behaviours and appearance. In some cases tomboy behaviour merged into homosexuality (lesbianism) with the rejection of feminine role identification of ‘mother’ and ‘wife’. The team in the Cape Town setting openly promoted heterosexuality compared to the team in Johannesburg, where coach and players were accepting and receptive towards players who expressed a variety of sexualities. This resulted in four individuals identifying as lesbian or bisexual within the research participants. The responses by their family members were complex and varied. Siblings encouraged the acceptability for other family members, whereas fathers were absent or oblivious and mothers were highly critical based on their religious and cultural traditions. Mothers experienced failure of not socialising their daughters into the social role that is perceived to encapsulate womanhood (as wife and mother). Perceptions regarding women’s football are changing in the public discourse to become more supportive. This is informed by a democratic South African consciousness and human justice framework that encourages greater acceptance of women’s roles in positions of power. Increased resource allocation through sponsorships and government programmes affords additional opportunities for female participation as well as encouragement for participants. Recommendations emerging from this thesis are useful to maintain the growth and support of women’s football. Structural adjustments are necessary within South African football in terms of increasing the amount of leagues and tournaments available for women and girls, leadership opportunities and long-term athlete development plans. Changes in practices that are vital to women’s football include equality of resource allocation, stakeholder engagement and media exposure. These changes require government and SAFA support to materialise, as well as continued alterations in individual, family and community attitudes, behaviours and practices. As women’s football in South African continues to grow and develop the opportunities for forthcoming research are plentiful. Utilising a mixed method comprehensive case study approach, becoming intimately involved in the research context, and providing opportunities for local voices to be heard can meaningfully inform future policies and practices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the accuracy of the expected penalty shots position predicted by female college students of varied experiences in football when they watched different spatial occlusion videos. Data were obtained from 30 healthy female college students the experienced group (age = 21.57±1.76) and 30 female non-experienced ones the inexperienced group (age = 21.33±1.16). At first, participants were required to watch the recorded (96 videos) videos of penalty shots. Whenever finishing watching a clip of the videos, they were then asked to select the checkboxes and tick their answers on the list. The data collected from the survey was conducted and tested by independent sample t-test and mixed-design two-factor analysis of variance. The acquired statistics were analyzed by SPSS for Windows 18.0 software and the statistically significant level was set as α=.05. Results was as the following. Firstly, the percentage of accuracy got from all the participants of different experience levels in expecting the position of football penalty shot is above 16.6%. Secondly, the experienced group can make more accurate judgements than the inexperienced do about the positions of the players’ heads, shoulders, torsos, buttocks, and supporting feet. Thirdly, the experienced group judge the positions of penalty kick mainly by watching the ball position, while the inexperienced group judge from the position of the supporting foot.
Bourdette, Francois Mbongo Rafemo. "The efficacy of Linctagon® spray for the prevention of colds and Influenza in female soccer team players of the University of Johannesburg." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/8320.
Full textThe common cold and influenza (flu) are upper respiratory tract conditions; the former characterized by nasal or throat discomfort, sneezing, rhinorrhoea, and malaise, and the latter by fever, coryza, anorexia, cough, headache, malaise and myalgia (Beers et al., 2006). The common cold can be caused by over 200 rhinoviruses while influenza is mostly due to influenza virus A or B. Cold symptoms usually clear after 7-10 days, influenza which is more severe lasts for 2-3 weeks (Eccles, 2005). Athletes are susceptible to common colds and influenza infections due to intensive physical activities and stress, which lowers their immune systems and increases the risk of spread among team-mates. To avoid missing competitions and practice, it would be advantageous for athletes to receive prophylactic treatment during the high risk period for colds and flu such as in winter (Brukner and Khan, 2006). Pelargonium sidoides, which is an ingredient of Linctagon® spray, is a well-researched plant extract which has antiviral, antibacterial and immune-modulator effects (Nativa, 2011). Its effect as a prophylactic for athletes has not been researched. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Linctagon® spray in preventing common colds and influenza in female soccer teams of the University of Johannesburg. This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, which took place over 63 days. Thirty female participants aged between 18-30 years were recruited from the University of Johannesburg female soccer teams via direct recruitment during training sessions on the University of Johannesburg Bunting campus. Participants meeting the inclusion criteria completed the Participant Information, Profile and Consent Forms. On day 1, the participants underwent a physical examination (vitals, ear, nose, throat and chest examinations). Participants either received a 20 ml bottle of Linctagon® spray or a placebo spray. Five squirts were taken orally twice daily for nine weeks. Participants also received three Wellness Questionnaires and Health Questionnaires to complete at home weekly and returned these at the following visits. On day 21 and day 42, the researcher collected the completed Questionnaires, performed a physical examination, dispensed and gave participants additional medication, and three additional Wellness and Health Questionnaires. At the final consultation, day 63, the researcher collected the questionnaires, and did a fourth and final physical examination. The data was collected from the participants and analyzed according to group frequencies and independent T-tests. The outcome indicated that the placebo was equally as effective as Linctagon® spray in the prophylaxis of common cold and influenza infections in female soccer team players of the University of Johannesburg for the duration of the study.

Full textBackground: Poor balance is a risk factor for injury in adolescent sport including soccer. Despite the rapid growth in female adolescent soccer especially in South Africa, the association between balance and injury in this population has not been fully explored. This study aimed to determine the relationship between injury and balance. Static and dynamic balance was monitored as sway index (SI) and limits of stability direction control (LOSDC). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine the body mass index of adolescent female soccer players; to determine the prevalence of injury in adolescent female soccer players; to determine static balance as revealed by the sway index (SI); to determine dynamic stability as revealed by limits of stability direction control (LOSDC) and to correlate body mass index (BMI) to sway index and limits of stability. Method: Eighty adolescent female soccer players, between the ages of fourteen and eighteen, were recruited through convenience sampling from schools in the eThekwini district of KwaZulu-Natal. After obtaining informed consent and assent, participants completed questionnaires and were scheduled for the balance and BMI assessments. The objective data for each participant consisted of height, weight, Sway Index (SI) and Limits of Stability Direction Control (LOSDC) readings, measured using a stadiometer, electronic scale and Biodex Biosway Balance System (Biodex Medical Systems Inc., Shirley, New York) respectively. The subjective and objective data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, Ill, USA). Statistical tests included descriptive statistics using frequency and cross-tabulation. Inferential statistics using t-tests and Pearson’s correlations at a significance level of 0.05 was also incorporated. The testing of hypotheses was performed using Fisher’s Exact tests for nominal data and ordinal data. A p value of < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. The statistical analysis also included Odds Ratio calculations. Results: The mean body mass index of the injured participants was 23.54±3.56 kg/m2 and the mean body mass index of the uninjured participants was 23.00±4.63. Only 27.5% of the participants sustained an injury. Injured participants performed poorly on average in the SI assessment involving their eyes open when standing on a soft surface. The results were similar for the LOSDC in the overall, right, left, backward-right and backward-left directions. However, there were no significant correlations calculated. Significant relationships existed between BMI and the SI assessments in the injured participants which involved standing on a firm surface with their eyes open (p = 0.05), their eyes closed when also standing on a firm surface (p = 0.05), their eyes open when standing on a soft surface (p = 0.02), and their eyes closed when standing on a soft surface (p = 0.04). A significant relationship also existed between BMI and LOS right direction control (p = 0.02). Conclusion: This research paper revealed that the body mass index as investigated in this study is similar to other studies involving female adolescents; soccer injury as investigated in this study is similar to other studies involving female adolescents; poor static and dynamic balance is not associated with injury in adolescent female soccer players and lastly, body mass index is linked to the balance of an individual.
