Abstract:
The usefulness of forests is spread from their exploitation for timber, tourism, and other functions to maintenance of wildlife, ecological balance, and prevention of soil erosion. In achieving these goals, the essential factor is proper forest management. However, with the increasingly perceived idea that forests are characterized by complex interactions related to biological and social aspects, forest management is facing a challenge, which consists in integrating interrelations between ecological and social systems. While sustainable forest management is originally seen as a constant yield of wood supply, modern ideas of sustainability are broader in scope, embracing all goods and services of the forest. Increasingly, forests are being managed as multi-functional ecosystems. In this vein, forests are progressively seen as complex social-ecological systems (SESs), requiring adaptive and multi-functional management. In this Ph.D. thesis, we consider that the question of management application can be tackled by understanding how shared infrastructures mediate the interaction between human and ecological environment. In particular, for sustainable and multi-functional forest management, the relation between the capacity for production as well as multi-functional use is highlighted with the concept of forest’s shared infrastructures that are mainly composed of roads (accessibility utilities). However, dilemmas associated with their provision pose some problems when it is applied in a context of different forest functions with conflicting objectives. Therefore, to fully understand and integrate the role of infrastructure and their governance into ecosystem science, we base our research on three parts. We first combine the use of Ostrom’s SES framework and Anderies’ robustness framework and apply it to a specific case study (Quatre-Montagne forest, Vercors, France) to highlight how forestry institutions affect forest ecosystem, its functions, and its social arrangements. With this, we link the concept of multi-functional forest management to the multi-functionality of infrastructures. We then develop a mathematical model, based on the first partition, which analyzes the evolution of the forest system and its functions when impacted by decisions of infrastructure provision. We highlight the role of governance calling to attention their role in fostering multi-functional forest management. Finally, we apply mathematical tools such as viability theory to identify management techniques and approaches that define a first step in characterizing adaptive managements for safe operating spaces in multi-functional forests

Furukawa, Chitose. "Functional multinational team leadership and team effectiveness from a dynamic capability perspective." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2011. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1386/.

Abstract:
Multinational teams (MNTs) have traditionally consisted of members from different nationalities, and such teams have attempted to capitalise on the diversity of the members to create innovative solutions. Currently, dynamic capabilities, by which is meant the ability to integrate, coordinate and upgrade capabilities to respond to environmental changes and dynamic demands, have been urged on multinational companies. However, very limited attention has been paid to how functional MNT leaders utilise team capabilities, including the diversity of the members, to enhance team effectiveness in organisational processes. To address that research gap, this study investigates functional MNT leadership skills aligned with dynamic capabilities and McGrath’s Input–Process–Output (IPO) model. First, it explores organisational processes and roles of functional MNT leaders from a perspective of dynamic capabilities. Second, it examines the mediation effect of functional MNT leadership skills by testing the proposed IPO model, and investigates similarities and differences between functional MNTs in two locations, Japan and Germany. The findings show that the right combination of functional MNT leadership skills – intra-team and extra-team relational skills, communication skills, setting clear goals, managing differences of national cultures, and technical competences – is required depending on the type of functional MNT and the location.

Abstract:
Background: Most organizations rely on their information system on a daily basis to generate opportunities and advantages. Meanwhile, with the increasing emphasize on corporate social responsibility (CSR), more directors and CEOs are shifting their sights to CSR by developing business models that underline responsible and ethical disciplines for running businesses. However, studies that combine the analysis of IS and CSR are few. Therefore, the potential benefits of utilizing IS from a more intan-gible view, which means CSR in our case, are less likely be discovered. Besides, sen-ior managers have a hard time on shifting perceptions on CSR from being an add-on activity to be integrated in core operations of the organizations. Aim & Purpose: The aim of our research is to investigate the functions that IS has in CSR management from managers' perspectives. As mentioned above, the main reason for con-duction this research is the existing knowledge gap through the subjects being investigated. The overall purpose for this study is to adopt EFQM Excellence Model and Work System Model to contribute to CSR value creation of the organization. Method: The current research approach is qualitative and a case study is applied as re-search strategy. Data collection is carried out by means of documents and interviews. Doc-uments include company annual reports and website information. Semi-structured inter-views are conducted with managers from Lasfosaringar Jokoping and PwC. Conclusions: The functions of IS in the management of CSR can be concluded into four aspects, which are information management, customer relationship management, monitor-ing daily affairs and corporate governance. Information system have changed the way data is being sorted, spread, disseminated and have accelerated the information exchange fre-quency in business operation. Those changes in turn reflect on the performance of cus-tomer, employee and corporate governance of the organization.

Hochstetler, Jay J. "Revising the Volunteer Functions Inventory| An Exploratory Study of Additional Functions." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3578565.

Abstract:

Volunteers provide valuable human resource assets in many areas of society and are critical to the success of non-profit organizations. The Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI) has been used for over ten years and has received the most attention from researchers who cite the theoretical basis, the predictive nature, and the general purpose application of the inventory as major strengths. However, there are several shortcoming of the instrument which limits its value to organizations that use volunteers. Several researchers have suggested that additional functions should be included in the VFI. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify missing functions that should be part of this inventory in order to improve its effectiveness as a tool for identifying volunteer motivations. The problem was that the VFL is an incomplete survey of functions for volunteer motivations, which limits its usefulness to practitioners and researchers. This research study was a qualitative multiple case study analysis which included interviews with volunteers, informant feedback, and focus group review of the coding of excerpts. A total of twelve volunteers from three volunteer organizations were purposefully selected for maximum variation. Questions were field tested with four experts and the researcher conducted face-to-face interviews with each participant. Informant feedback was used to verify the transcription and the analysis of the results, and a focus group performed a sorting procedure to verify the results. The analysis supported use of the six functions included in the VFI, and found considerable support for the concepts of civic responsibility and debt or obligation as functions that provide motivation for volunteerism. There were a notable number of comments by the participants that aligned with these two functions, and were validated through the triangulation methods of participant feedback and the focus group. Based on this study, the researcher concludes that civic responsibility and debt or obligation are functions that should be included in the VFI. The researcher recommends that additional studies should be conducted to develop a modified VFI including these functions. This includes creating and validating questions for the two additional functions, and a testing and validating a revised inventory.

Clements, Paul. "The arts, culture and exclusion : with reference to New Labour cultural policy 1997-2002 : this is a critical examination of the social function and evaluation of the arts in Britain and the extent to which they legitimate social difference or integrate the socially excluded." Thesis, City University London, 2003. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/8403/.

Full text
Abstract:
With specific reference to the cultural policy set out by New Labour, this research explores the individual and social function of the arts and the extent to which they are agents of inclusion. The arts, an important aspect even driver of culture, can be perceived as exclusive with taste reflecting socio-economic concerns which contradicts this function. Such a paradox requires an investigation into the complex and sometimes contradictory relationship between cultural and social inclusion and exclusion, as well as the methods used of evaluating impact. The thesis is divided into four sections. Part One sets out definitions of social exclusion and relevant government cultural policy. Part Two investigates valuation methodology and techniques of evaluating the social impact of the arts programmes in particular. This includes an analysis of relevant reports. Part Three then investigates cultural exclusion. A trilateral approach is taken that assets at, cultural democracy and popular culture. Part Four relates specifically to causal factors of inclusion and how the arts enable emancipation, empowerment and satisfy personal need. It also explores the wider social function and ideal location of the arts, especially with regards to a leisure framework. Throughout, the research questions the extent to which the social role of the arts and policy is one of accommodation or more concerned with reflecting individual needs and a wider counterculture. It concludes that an engaged freedom is the more natural agenda of the arts, which contrasts with an instrumental New Labour government policy that treats social inclusion as primarily related to employment and training issues in order to increase individual social capital.

Abstract:
Background: Diversity management was introduced in Sweden during the 1990s along with its desirable arguments which stresses the importance of diversified workforces in order to ensure organizational efficiency and customization. These assumptions along with demographic changes in the Swedish labour force has led to diversity being described as an established issue for management. However, the concept can be conceptualized in a variety of ways – a functionalistic orientated management literature tend to highlight the benefits of diversity in organizations, while extensive criticism of diversity as a management strategy has emerged in the academic sphere. Purpose: The purpose is to study how the concept of diversity is constructed in Swedish organizations. Furthermore to understand the conditions of these constructions. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative research method, through ten semi-structured interviews in both public and private organizations. Conclusion: Human differences constitute the very basis of the construction of diversity management and is seen as a prerequisite for organizations' performance ability. A functionalist-oriented research is regarded as true and objective and various normative elements in the institutional environment are described as important for the construction of diversity. However, the issue of diversity management is understood to be decoupled from practice and strong institutional requirements for economic rationality in the organizational context are described as crucial for the concept's construction. By emphasizing the specific ideology that constitutes the very premise of discrimination, the construction of diversity as a business case is further described to contribute to creating and maintaining power relations and social inequality.

Abstract:
This study explored human resource management (HRM) functions of 200 work organizations operating in Turkey using a questionnaire. The participating organizations were the members of either the Personnel Managers Association or the Quality Association in Turkey. Job analysis and design, recruitment and selection, orientation and employee training, performance appraisal, career planning and development, human resource planning, compensation management and incentives, managing employee health and safety were among the fields that were examined. In addition to the prevalent HRM functions, the profile of Human Resource Departments of the organizations (i.e., title, size, number of hierarchical levels, etc.), the characteristics of HRM managers (education, age, gender, experience, etc.) were also examined. For example, it was found that the departments operating in field of HRM were named Human Resource Department in 59.5% of the organizations in the sample. Moreover, the results indicated that the main HRM areas practiced by the private sector organizations operating in Turkey were personnel selection, employee recruitment, training and development, compensation management, and employee orientation. Nevertheless, the other essential functions of HRM, such as job analysis, human resource planning and career planning, and development were not practiced as frequently. Whether those functions were frequently practiced or not, each of them was further analysed in terms their specific applications. Another aim of the present study was to compare the practices of HRM in Turkey with its applications in the world. For instance, the results demonstrated that recruiting via internet was practiced frequently in the surveyed organizations and in the US companies. The present study also revealed that personnel selection methods, such as interviews, were popular among surveyed organizations and organizations in Eastern European countries, England, and the US.

This research aimed to identify, describe and analyze the expectations of family and school in relation to the participation of the family's role in school performance and development of children, as well as lead to reflection school staff (teachers, employees and managers) on current challenges to the expansion of this relationship by means of a product in the form of video documentary "When the family participates," which aims to provide essential information to better use and management of space and time on the approaches and family of democratic relations with school, recognizing the importance of effective practice in this participatory process of education of children of Brazilian public schools. Participated in this research family, teachers and management team of a state public school west of a medium-sized city in the interior of São Paulo. This qualitative research used as instruments for data collection questionnaires goals and semi structured interviews. It was found from the results that there is great appreciation for the families interviewed the education process of their children, because they represent one of the only forms of social mobility and overcome the very conditions of life, although the forms of participation and mobilization for access and children stay in school are not always those to which teachers value and expect families. Through the data collected, also noted the difficulty of school management act in a democratic way, bringing families the responsibility for the administration and school decisions. This indicates that there is a need for training of the whole school community of diverse forms of participation in school.

In parallel to strategic management, a new administrative approach emerges in the national scene: the social management. Urban planning is one of the areas of the public administration that can best be benefited from this model of decision-making. The City Statute Law establishes a set of rules aiming at urban land utilization. It makes compulsory the presentation of a Director Plan by all municipalities with more than twenty thousand inhabitants. This brings, among other legislative innovations, social management and the social function of property, with repercussions in several aspects such as, among others, economic, political, social and environmental conditions. Brazil – basically an agrarian country up to a few decades ago – went through a fast urbanization process due to workers migration from rural areas. The urban planning used to be carried out by a bureaucratic, centralized, authoritative structure, mainly with speculative and economic interests. As a result, a disorderedly low income population growth came up to urban areas with striking proliferation of informal urban activities. This paper analyses briefly and in a general view how implementation of social management through the City Statute Law and the Director Plan is changing this situation and how it may influence urban development and planning in Rio de Janeiro City.

This thesis views the organization as a learning system and focuses on key characteristics of a learning organization and Communities of Practice. The interrelationship as well as the details of these themes is described in detail. Some organizations seek to become learning organizations. Yet, implementation is elusive and is not often based on research about what constitutes a learning culture. The goals of this study is to review and analyze the key characteristics of learning organizations and Communities of Practice how they develop, and where does one start if a learning organization is to be created. A qualitative research methodology to answer the why and how question is followed to describe, explain and interpret the findings. Abstract:
In the last few decades, the provision of social housing has become more complex, involving a network of relationships between several stakeholders and the government, which tend to operate in a fragmented way. In this context, it is necessary to manage client requirements, in order to process and make available suitable information for supporting decision making in the product development process. The main objective of this research work is to devise a protocol for client requirements processing in social housing projects, with the ultimate aim to increase the degree of users´ satisfaction. The research method was divided into three stages: (a) structuring of requirements; (b) weighing requirements; and (c) study of the applicability of quality function deployment (QFD). Initially, a method for structuring the main factors that affect the users´ satisfaction in nine housing projects was devised, in order to improve the understanding about their requirements. In the second stage, the different perceptions of the construction professionals involved in the product development process on the users´ requirements were analysed and compared. In the last stage, the QFD quality matrix was used for processing requirements, with the aim of proposing adaptations of that tool to the context of social housing. The individual analysis of construction professionals supported the processing of data that were used to produce visual devices, making it possible the development of several analises. The application of a QFD matrix created the opportunity for further processing clients’ requirements, since data from the users and from the construction professionals were analysed together, providing an opportunity to integrate data produced in the previous stages.

Abstract:
In previous linguistic research, it has been found that there is an indirect relationship between gender and language usage. It has also been found that men and women use language in a distinctive way in their work role. There is a lot of research, both in the gender sciences but also in the linguistics, which has examined the difference in how men and women express themselves in writing. How the difference between the sexes can also be seen from a writing perspective is something that interests me and so in my study I chose to look at how men and women express themselves and portray themselves in personal letters. It is an area that interests me and looking at personal letters to job ads is something that there is not so much previous science around and I believe that more science in this specific area may be supportive in recruitment in the labor market in the future. The aim of my study is to see if there are differences in how men and women portray their characteristics in personal letters. My study is based on the following questions: Are person´s characteristics portrayed in personal letters by means of material or relational processes depending on gender? How do men and women portray their characteristics in personal letters versus the job advert´s qualifications? With the help of SFG and Impression Management I got answers to my questions. My study links to theories around SFG where the focus is mainly on processes. The study also links to Impression Management and Hirdman´s (1998) theory of the gender system. The results of my study show that there are differences between how men and women express themselves in writing. Women often produce their characteristics through relational processes and thus identify themselves with their characteristics. Men have a tendency to express their characteristics through material processes, which means that they identify themselves through actions. In contrast, my results do not support previous research that says that women appear more sensitive and vague while men appear more powerful. My results also show that women express more characteristics than men who are also linked to the job advertisement qualifications.

Abstract:
Classroom management is a common challenge in middle schools. Class-wide Function-Related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT) is a multi-tiered intervention designed to decrease problem behaviors at the classroom level (Wills et al., 2010). It is comprised of evidence-based practices such as teaching classroom expectations, increasing teacher praise, and using positive reinforcement in an interdependent group contingency. CW-FIT has shown promise in a variety of school settings, but it has not been tested in middle school art classrooms. This was initial investigation examining the effects of CW-FIT using a single-subject ABAB design in two middle school art classrooms. Results indicated that class on-task behavior increased by more than 25% and teacher praise-to-reprimand ratios more than doubled during CW-FIT implementation, compared to baseline levels. Results also indicated that on-task behavior for students identified as at-risk for emotional/behavioral disorders improved by more than 18% during the intervention. Teachers and students found the intervention to be socially valid. Results indicate promising implications for using CW-FIT in other middle school art classrooms.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the psychometric properties of three global user subjective measures of the ”The Quality Star” clinical review model: Consumer Satisfaction Scale, Global Quality of Life scale, and Perceived Global Distress scale. The mental health implementation context of this review model emphasizes the client as an agent of change, taking part in shared decision making in an empowered role as collaborative partner to the professional clinicians. In Paper I study the patient self-rating Consumer Satisfaction Scale gave results comparable to those obtained by independent interviewer assessors. Out of cost-effective perspective professional time is saved and logistics simplified. In Paper II the visual analogue self-rating Global Quality of Life scale was shown to have satisfactory test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity with the “Life as a whole” item of Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life (MANSA). The patients’ conceptualizations of the scale based on associative findings with a number of validating instruments were consistent with expected areas of concern for Serious Mentally Ill persons. Similarly, in Paper III the visual analogue scale the Perceived Global Distress scale, showed acceptable clinical test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity with the MANSA item, “How satisfied are you with your mental health”. In associative analyses it was found that depressive, anxiety, interpersonal and existential elements contributed to the patient´s conceptualization of the construct. In Paper IV, a previous finding suggesting that women were more satisfied with the health care and had better social functioning compared to men was further elaborated investigating the discriminative properties of the subjective instruments. In the multi-centre cohort of 2552 patients it was possible to detect differences between genders and functional levels professionally assessed with the split version of Global Assessment of Functioning rating scale. The General discussion underlines that although subjective measures tend to have strong interrelations, supporting earlier findings, one has to use multiple measures for an optimal management of mental illness as the subjective outcome ratings have to be individually interpreted in a feed-back dialogue with the patient and be compared to observational assessments.

Abstract:
The Master Plan is the main instrument of the urban policy of a municipality, and must follow the general guidelines brought by the City Statute, National Law No. 10,257, of July 10, 2001. In Aracaju, the PDDU - Urban Development Master Plan, still in force, is that of Complementary Municipal Law No. 42, dated October 4, 2000. Pursuant to the provisions of art. 40, §3, of the City Statute, the law establishing the master plan shall be reviewed at least every ten years. This temporary lapse was ratified by the Aracaju Municipal Organic Law updated, in its article 219. The Aracaju PDDU (2000) was not updated according to the directives brought by the City Statute in 2001, and all attempts to review have not been finalized. Within this context, the proposed research sought to analyze the causes of nonoccurrence of the revisions and the consequences for the municipality of Aracaju, the accomplishment of the participative management, as well as the (dis) fulfillment of the principle of the social function of urban property, investigating if the instruments provided for in art. 182, §4, of the Federal Constitution of 1988 were implemented. To accomplish this and the other specific objectives, different methodological procedures were used, associated to different stages, namely: bibliographic survey, analysis of judicial processes and interviews with specialists from different areas of Knowledge. The results of this work show that Aracaju has been presenting, since 2000, an accelerated and disordered urban growth, with several impacts on the city and its inhabitants, like the increase of the homicide rate, being, at present, the largest in the country. Thus, it was verified that Aracaju's current PDDU (2000) has been outdated for approximately 18 (eighteen) years, without fulfilling the purpose for which it is intended, suffering the influence of social actors who do not see the city of Aracaju as a being who pulses full of life and who deserves and needs protection.

Wang, Shan. "Top Management Team Functional Diversity and Management Forecast Accuracy." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/19239.

Abstract:
Prior literature documents that the diversity of top management team (TMT) functional experiences enhances firm performance through its effect on information processing and sharing between team members. In this study, I examine whether TMT functional diversity affects management forecast accuracy via the information aggregation and communication among top executives. If functional diversity among individuals allows top executives to better process and share information, a greater degree of functional diversity should lead to more accurate management forecasts. TMT functional diversity can take two forms. The first, between-member functional diversity, refers to the heterogeneity in the primary functional domains of each TMT member, and the second, within-member functional diversity, refers to the average intrapersonal breadth of functional experiences of each TMT. I find that both types are positively associated with management forecast accuracy. In cross-sectional analyses, I find that the effect of TMT functional diversity is more important for firms with greater uncertainty and complexity and for firms that are led by CEOs and CFOs who are narrow functional specialists. Collectively, the results suggest that TMT functional diversity plays an important role in management disclosure, thereby shedding light on how the knowledge composition of top management influences the aggregation and communication of financial information.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a functional framework for content management. This framework provides concepts and vocabulary for analysis and description of content management systems. The framework is derived from an analysis of eight content management systems. It describes forty-five conceptual functions organized into five functional groups. The functionality derived from the analysis of the content management systems is described using the vocabulary provided by the functional framework. Coverage of the concepts in the existing systems is verified. The utility of the framework is validated through the creation of a prototype that implements sufficient functionality to support a set of specific use cases.

Zanettin, Giulia. "Effects of vineyard management on functional biodiversity." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Padova, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11577/3422219.

Abstract:
Italian vineyards are large-scale monocultures characterized by high pesticide pressure and removal of ecologically valuable structures. In the resulting highly disturbed and simplified systems, the insurgence of non-native species outbreaks can easier occur. In this framework, the preservation of semi-natural habitats and the adoption of more sustainable vineyard management practices are of particular importance in vineyard agro-ecosystems. In this thesis, the influence of vineyard management and landscape complexity on leafhopper species was investigated. Results shown that investigated factors can affect the leafhopper population densities and their natural control, and therefore they should be considered when pest control strategies are planned on a large scale. Moreover, some habitat manipulation practices, such as the management of spontaneous groundcover and the use of green manure, could be useful strategies to increase and/or enhance beneficial arthropods by providing fundamental sources for the survival and reproduction of natural enemies. The presence of non-mowed spontaneous grass in vineyards inter-rows favoured the abundance of natural enemies but also of grapevine leafhoppers, especially in organic. In particular, non-mowed vegetation could make harder the control of Scaphoideus titanus populations in organic vineyards, and its adoption should be carefully evaluated when the leafhopper occurs in the vineyards. Allowing the green manure to flowering for a prolonged period instead of mowing it early, as traditionally done by the growers, can favour a higher presence and abundance of beneficial arthropods while not influenced phytophagous densities. The timing of mowing must be accurate programmed to avoid the dispersal on leafhopper vectors. Investigations on the phenology of E. vulnerata suggest that the non-native pest can develop three generations per years in the new invaded area, and the presence of rural buildings and alternative hosts at vineyard margins favoured it overwintering and spreading into the vineyards. The impact of natural enemies on pest populations appeared to be limited to egg parasitism by Hymenoptera Mymaridae. A new approach aimed at promoting the impact of egg parasitoids and predators requires to be developed. In this context, the effectiveness of two generalist predators in controlling the leafhopper populations were tested both in laboratory and field conditions. Promising results obtained in laboratory trials suggested to release predators in vineyard, but their release did not give satisfactory results, except in only one trial in which the release of Orius majusculus significantly reduced the leafhopper numbers, suggesting to implement release techniques, densities and timing to improve the impact of anthocorids on grape leafhoppers. The design of modern viticultural systems should integrate management practices with lower environmental impact with ecological compensation measures to increase and enhance biodiversity in the vineyard agro-ecosystems. Habitat management practices can contribute to enhance biodiversity but in extremely simplified context, the only presence of temporary vegetation appears not enough to create a more pest-stable agro-ecosystem. Since the deployment of pesticides can favouring the insurgence of pest outbreaks and limited the successful implementation of biological control, more sustainable biological control strategies should be implemented to control pest population densities, such as for E. vulnerata in vineyards of North-eastern Italy.

In dissertation work grounded methodical position and practical recommendations are developed in relation to providing of effective model of realization of social functions of enterprises of agricultural engineer within the limits of the proper type of organizational conduct New conformities to law are set in relation to efficiency of activity of enterprises, taking into account maintenance, effectiveness and efficiency of realization of social functions within the framework of separate types of organizational conduct on the example of enterprises of agricultural engineer. Abstract:
With focus on distribution, this rapport touches the planning and excecution of routes at the business case Gerdas Bröd in Grästorp AB. From the assumption that the resources are limited at Gerdas this rapport will present route suggestions from the objective functions load factor and minimum mileage. The purpose has never been to present any optimized routes but rather show how to work with these things in a reasonable, logical and methodically way without claiming any remarkable amount of resources. Trough data collection of interviews, observations and dialogs with several employees with different roles within Gerdas, this rapport has developed into this final version. The present of the company and their desire of actions could, thanks to the data collection, be identified and be the foundation of further analysis and recommendation. The limited resources can in some ways explain the lack of planning and management within the distribution of the company. This has led to the drivers being on their own when it comes to the execution of the loading and transporting. As the public face of the company the drivers handles almost everything when it comes to distribution while they manage to handle a big majority of the continuous customer contact. The makings of the route suggestions are primarily to support them in their daily work. After analysing and comparing theory with the company empiricism this will end in a line of recommended actions for the business case. With the greatly varying demand you must be internal flexible to be able to respond to any under- or over staffing. The access to more trucks and drivers is one of several recommended actions.

Thinking in a city that comply with its social function, could imagine a place where public streets, buildings and urban equipment harmoniously compose the urban scene. However, this possibility may be far from becoming reality, even because there is no unanimity in relation to what that harmony would be. In this scene, the research object of this essay is the street art. This is an artistic expression that is far from pleasing to all. On the other way, it is always present in discussion about its legality or illegality. For many, street art is nothing more than visual pollution to be punished criminally. For others, only the authorized graffiti are part of an artistic expression typical of big urban centers. Our legal system accepts the authorized graffiti, if could be prove that it is done with the permission of the owner of the property in which it is applied. However, the non-authorized graffiti is a conduct typified as a crime by Law 9605/1998, the Law of Environmental Crimes. This essay presents an analysis of what was and what is currently the Urban Law. It verifies the main trends with regard to the organization of the urban landscape in the cities of Barcelona, Berlin, New York and São Paulo. It investigates the possible instruments to be used for the management of sustainable and functional cities. Among these instruments, a more in-depth analysis of the Strategic Master Plan of São Paulo is carried out. Finally, it raises some possibilities of the use of spaces reserved for the practice and exhibition of street art, especially of the authorized graffiti, in the ZEPEC-APC modality, since street art is part of the visual identity of the city of São Paul. The idea is to create several spaces throughout the city ¿ to include society as much as possible - in the form of Street Art Galleries. These spaces are in agreement with the world trends in urban management combined with art and culture.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The matrix structure has had varying degrees of success over the last 35 years. During this period the major factors, seen as critical to achieving matrix effectiveness, have been identified as: • communication; • strong leader; • culture; • rewards; • skills in teams; • clear and defined goals; • senior management support; • defined responsibility; • accountability; and • procedures and standards. A matrix structure (In the form of Category Management) was introduced into our organisation (USABCO) in 1999 and three years later it was replaced with the previous structure (Hierarchical Structure). In hind light the category management structure, if implemented correctly with the relevant preparation, training, and support, would have improved new product development efficiency. Eleven recent articles related to matrix effectiveness were selected and analysed, and the results used to establish the following for each of the above and other critical factors: • proposed actions that can be taken to improve matrix effectiveness; and • reported benefits of these actions. This is not an exhaustive list but rather a summary of results from current research, empirical studies and surveys.
Mukherjee, Prerona. "Functional disconnection and social cognition in schizophrenia." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/5901.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction Social and emotional functions play a key role in schizophrenia. Both positive symptoms, such as hallucinations and persecutory delusions, as well as negative symptoms such as social withdrawal, and flattened affect impact socioemotional function. These functions involve distributed brain networks. The ‘Disconnection Hypothesis’, a plausible unifying theory of schizophrenia, proposes connectivity within such networks as a core pathological feature of schizophrenia. Connectivity is also related to specific genetic risk factors. Therefore the present project addresses the hypothesis that individuals with schizophrenia might show disconnection within socio-emotional brain networks, and examines the effects of a functional polymorphism of the BDNF gene on connectivity within these networks. Methods Here I examined the brain activation and connectivity for implicit emotional reaction and social judgment in schizophrenia, as well as with variation in the val66met polymorphism of BDNF. Brain activation was examined with functional magnetic resonance imaging, and effective connectivity was estimated using psycho-physiological interactions, from the bilateral amygdala to the whole brain (using a facial image paradigm for explicit approachability judgement and implicit fear response respectively). Results Individuals with schizophrenia showed reduced activation in the right lingual gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus and left amygdala during fear processing, as well as reduced connectivity from the left amygdala to the right temporo-parietal junction and precuneus. During approachability judgments, patients overactivated the right inferior frontal gyrus and right precuneus and showed reduced connectivity from the bilateral amygdala to the right inferior frontal gyrus. Met allele carriers of the BDNF val66met polymorphism showed overactivation in the medial anterior cingulate cortex, and bilateral insula, as well as reduced connectivity between the anterior cingulate cortex and hippocampus. For approachability judgment, met carriers overactivated the middle occipital gyrus, and showed reduced connectivity from the left amygdala to the right parahippocampal gyrus and medial frontal gyrus, as well as the left posterior cingulate gyrus, pre and post central gyrus, middle temporal gyrus and cerebellum. Conclusion In conclusion, connectivity between the amygdala and brain regions associated with a range of socially relevant functions were found to be reduced in both patients, and met allele carriers of the BDNF val66met SNP. Given the key role of the amygdala in affective processing this diffuse disconnection in networks for socio-emotional functions might mediate the aberrant emotional and social behavior seen in individuals with schizophrenia.

Abstract:

Web feeds are a popular technique to distribute information about contents of web pages. RSS and Atom are two standards used to syndicate web contents as web feeds. This project investigates how to make different kinds of Internet web feeds searchable by implementing a general wrapper for web feeds in an extensible and functional DBMS, Amos II. The system, RSS-Amos, makes it possible to search the contents of any RSS or Atom based web feed using the query language AmosQL. New web feeds simply have to be declared to the system in order to make them searchable. The system guarantees that added feeds always are up to date when queries are made. The wrapper is implemented in Java using the ROME API from java.net. The project includes an evaluation of the performance of the system. Due to the fact that the actual data sources are located on the Internet, a cache of read feeds has been implemented to improve performance. The cache makes queries over 150 times faster.

Abstract:
NoSQL is basically a family name for all Database Management Systems (DBMS) that is not Relational DBMS. The fast growth of all social networks has led to a huge amount of unstructured data that NoSQL DBMS is supposed to handle better than Relational DBMS. Most comparisons performed are between Relational DBMS and NoSQL DBMS. In this paper, the comparison is about non-functional properties for different types of NoSQL DBMS instead. Three of the most common NoSQL types are Document Stores, Key-Value Stores and Column Stores. The most used DBMS of those types are MongoDB, Redis and Apache Cassandra. After working with the databases and performing YCSB Benchmarking the conclusion is that if the database should handle an enormous amount of data, Cassandra is most probably best choice. If speed is the most important property and if all data fits within the memory; Redis is probably the most well suited database. If the database needs to be flexible and versatile, MongoDB is probably the best choice.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sylvio Toshiro Mukai.pdf: 2159593 bytes, checksum: 1bf1256a39a9f95d4831dff494d75088 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-06
This thesis has the purpose of demonstrating that the management of the public assets is linked to the development of the city`s social function, as required by the Brazilian Federal Constitution and applicable law. The link which this thesis aims at demonstrating withdraws parcel of the discretionary power the Public Administration had to manage its assets directly or by means of granting the private use of the public assets on behalf of a private party. The reduction of the discretionary power results from the necessity of the Public Administration, especially the Municipality, of performing actions and activities aiming at achieving the goals of the urban development policies set forth in the Brazilian Federal Constitution and, in doing so, abiding by the general guidelines provided in the City Act (in Portuguese, Estatuto da Cidade ). Therefore, from an analysis of the current scenario of the Brazilian cities and their relationship with the right to sustainable cities, this thesis aims at defining the so-called social functions of the city . It also aims at establishing the relationship of the city`s social functions with the right to sustainable cities and the social rights, in order to define, by means of the exercise of the public functions which require broad popular participation the way the content and the shape of the intended development of the social functions of the city influence the uses of the public assets and limit the discretionary power of the Public Administration to manage the public assets, directly or by means of grants of the use of such assets by private parties. The goal is to contribute with the ones who require clear and effective fulfillment of the objectives and purposes of the public policy legally formed for the urban development of the Brazilian cities. The preparation of this thesis was based on a systematic interpretation of the applicable constitutional and legal provisions, and also an analysis of Scholar`s opinions and judicial precedents related to the core matter under analysis

Abstract:
This thesis presents a new integrated tool and decision support framework to approach complex problems resulting from the interaction of many multi-criteria issues. The framework is embedded in an integrated tool called OUTDO (Oxford University Tool for Decision Organisation). OUTDO integrates Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), decision rationale management with a modified Issue-Based Information Systems (IBIS) representation, and probabilistic forecasting to effectively capture the essential reasons why decisions are made and to dynamically re-use the rationale. In doing so, it allows exploration of how changes in external parameters affect complicated and uncertain decision making processes in the present and in the future. Once the decision maker constructs his or her own decision process, OUTDO checks if the decision process is consistent and coherent and looks for possible ways to improve it using three new semantic-based decision support approaches. For this reason, two ontologies (the Decision Ontology and the Energy Ontology) were integrated into OUTDO to provide it with these semantic capabilities. The Decision Ontology keeps a record of the decision rationale extracted from OUTDO and the Energy Ontology describes the energy generation domain, focusing on the water requirement in thermoelectric power plants. A case study, with the objective of recommending electricity generation and steam condensation technologies for ten different regions in the UK, is used to verify OUTDO’s features and reach conclusions about the overall work.

Abstract:

Researchers have developed framework for diagnosis analysis that are called “Model Based Diagnosis Systems”. These systems are very general in scope, covers a wide range of malfunctions uncovering and identifying repair measures. This thesis is an effort to diagnose complex and lengthy static source code. Without executing source code discrepancies can only be identified by finding procedural dependencies.

With respect to modern programming languages, many software bugs arise due to logical erroneous calculations or miss handling of data structures. Modern Integrated Development Environments (IDE) like Visual Studio, J-Builder and Eclipse etc are strong enough to analyze and parse static text code to identify syntactical and type conversion errors. Some of IDE’s can automatically fix such kind of errors or provide different possible suggestions to developer.

In this thesis we have analyzed and extracted functional dependencies of source code. This extracted information can increase programmer’s understanding about code when they are extremely large or complex. By modeling this information into a model system, reduces time to debug the code in case of any failure. This increases productivity in terms of software development and in debugger skills as well. The main contribution of this thesis is the use of model based diagnosis techniques on software functional dependency graphs and charts.

Keywords: Model Based Diagnosis Systems, Integrated Development Environments, Procedural Dependencies, Erroneous calculations, Call graphs, Directed graph markup language.

Abstract:
No
What is management and how do the people who become managers take on a managerial identity? How does text inform the manager's identity? From cultural studies we understand that the relationship between text and reader is not passive but that each works upon the other and that text is active in forming the identity of the reader. However, analysis of management textbooks published since the 1950s reveals that textboks construct a world in which chaos is kept at bay only by strong management and in which strong management is based upon the rationality of modernity. This book exposes and analyses such claims-to-truths and theorises their arguments using the work of Butler and Foucault, the sociology of scientific knowledge, crtical legal studies, art history and queer theory. By revealing the post-modern turn in these texts,The Social Construction of Managementis both a critical and empirical study that explores the constitution of managerial identities in the age of masseducation in management. An exciting contribution to the growing body of knowledge within critical management studies, this book challenges the way we think about organizations and their management, and about management education as a whole. This is thought provoking reading for anyone studying management or working int he managerial organization

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology, Management, and Policy Program, 2007.
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 255-265).
The evolution of the architecture of long-lived complex socio-technical systems have important consequences and can happen in unexpected ways. This dissertation explores this question through the study of the architectural evolution of Municipal Electric Utilities (MEUs) and their diversification into broadband services in the United States. Our research seeks answers to questions of process (why and how did this happen?), impact (what was the economic effect of this evolution?), theory (what is the phenomenon that explains this evolution?) and method (how can we study such changes?). The number of MEUs offering broadband services increased by more than 200% between 2000 and 2005, which made MEUs one of the most important providers of fiber-based broadband services in the nation. As a result, the entry of MEUs into broadband became a heavily debated policy issue at local, state, and national levels, and many laws were proposed for restricting or broadening their role in broadband. Our research provides the first evidence about the economic impact of this phenomenon for better-informed policy making. The analysis of the architectural evolution of MEUs required appropriate methods.
(cont.) We integrated the Representation Stage of the Complex Large Interconnected Open Socio-Technical (CLIOS) Process and Object Process Methodology (OPM) under a framework for system architecture analysis, and developed the CLIOS-OPM Integrated Representation Method (COIReM). COIReM' objective is to study the architectural evolution of socio-technical systems. We applied it to the evolution of MEUs using data from case study research, documentation, field research and interviews. We find that the evolution of MEUs and their entry into broadband services resulted from a process we define as Functional Emergence (FE): the process by which a new externally delivered function emerges triggered by the combined effect of technical and contextual changes affecting internal functions of a complex socio-technical system. The diversification of MEUs into broadband shows that small technological changes related to the internal functions of the system in the presence of regulatory and organizational adaptation, can stimulate the emergence of new externally delivered functions. Especially in organizations with high absorptive capacity and dynamic capabilities, these new functions can become sources of strategic diversification. The inability to understand these dynamics can create dramatic competitive disadvantages.
(cont.) For example, in this case technical changes created significant resources that, while not being perceived as valuable by the system itself, were greatly valued and demanded by an active local customer base. The impact of this evolution was studied quantitatively using Matched Sample Estimators. Results showed that: (i) the adoption of IP-enabled services had a positive impact on the internal efficiency of MEUs, (ii) there is no evidence to support the contention advanced in some policy discussions that MEUs are subsidizing their broadband business with funds from their electric power operations, and (iii) MEUbased broadband is associated with higher growth rates in the number of local business establishments, even after adjusting for the presence of private broadband providers. These qualitative and quantitative results have important implications for policy making. We argue that the entry of MEU into broadband owes more to their nature as an electric utility than as a municipal agency. We suggest that, as result of the economies of scope between electric power and broadband services, MEUs represent a case of sustainable broadband facilities-based providers and that, given the effects in internal efficiency and local economic development, they should be exempted from state legislation preventing local governments from offering telecommunication services.
(cont.) This research makes four main contributions. First, it uncovers a new behavior of complex technological systems: small technological and contextual changes affecting internal components and functions can produce the emergence of new external functions. Second, we propose a new framework to study the architectural evolution of socio-technical systems. Third, it provided evidence that, in the case of MEUs, this behavior is observable and measurable. Finally, the thesis provides a framework with which to formulate intervening policy measures.
by Carlos Alberto Osorio-Urzúa.
Ph.D.
