All wildlife populations harbour parasites. However, seabirds are likely to play a particularly important role in the maintenance and dispersal of infectious agents as a result of their colonial breeding habits. Seabird colonies are also known to be highly spatially structured, but little is known about the effects of this spatial structuring on seabird parasite dynamics. In this thesis, I use a tick-borne virus, Great Island virus (GIV), found in a large common guillemot (Uria aalge) colony bordering the North Sea as a model system to explore this relationship. Abstract:
Despite the importance of the IFNs in viral infections, many questions about the dynamics of IFN production and activity remain unanswered. Addressing these questions forms the first half of this thesis. It begins with an introduction to innate immunity, and a review of existing research. Focus then falls upon a simple experimental system: the in vitro infection of cell monolayers by Herpes simplex virus and the resulting IFN response. A stochastic spatial model of viral infection and consequent IFN production and activity is constructed. Using this model, simulations of infections unde

The life-history and infection parameters of the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema feltiae (Filipjev)(Nematoda:Rhabditida) and Heterorhahditis megidis (Poinar, Jackson & Klein)(Nematoda:Rhabditida) were examined to provide specific details for the construction of mathematical SI models for biological control of soil insect pests. Laboratory experiments using the Greater Waxmoth, Galleria mellonella as the model host were undertaken to specifically examine the transmission behaviour of infective juvenile nematodes. The proportion of infective juveniles of S. feltiae which infected hosts wa

This thesis presents the first study of the damping of a Bloch oscillating wave packet by Zener tunneling to above-barrier states [1]. We investigate the time evolution of an below-barrier subband Wannier-Stark wave packet in a strongly coupled GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice (SL) with shallow quantum well barriers by optical interband spectroscopy. We use a sub-100 fs homodyne pump-probe technique which is sensitive to the intraband polarization. The presented experimental data unambiguously show an electric field-dependent continuous decrease of the intraband coherence time. Besides the continuous

Abstract:
This work develops a conceptual framework for modeling and simulating spatial dynamics. The framework links modeling of time variability with spatial variability. With current modeling in environmental analysis taking place at the discrete level (modeling fire, hiker behavior, or watershed run-off), it is the task of this thesis to provide a conceptual framework for integration of these discrete components in a systems like simulation environment for modeling their interactions through time. It explores the utility of the discrete event simulation framework developed by Zeigler (1976, 1984) fo
