Abstract:
AbstractAs the readers among whom and for whom the book of Hosea was composed read and reread it they could not but construe images of YHWH. In the process, metaphors from different source conceptual domains were evoked. Each of them involved important aspects of the worldview of these readers, their understanding of themselves and their deity, and very often a sense of resistance to imperial ideological constructions. The centrally enabling metaphor of YHWH as didactic communicator, that is teacher of Israel, played a central role in the social and ideological worldview of the literati who wrote, read, and reread the book of Hosea and other prophetic and authoritative books in ancient Yehud and reflected the social roles of the literati and of the repertoire of prophetic books that evolved in ancient Yehud, among which the book of Hosea, in its present form, evolved and found its place.

Abstract:
AbstractChildren’s books often feature complex material aspects. Despite that fact, little research has been done on questions of materiality in children’s and youth books. The article aims at outlining the field of the materiality of historical German-language children’s books. By analyzing historical author’s pedagogical statements as well as the design of historical children’s and youth fiction, the article summarizes different approaches concerning the materiality of children’s books. Based on the historical development and the generic study on how children modify the materiality of their books, the article further investigates the book-as-object and emphasizes the child’s point of view by scrutinizing the adult-culture book-toy distinction. It will become apparent that the specific forms of children’s book reception emerge since the materiality of the book and its exploration present a new embodied experience. The specific reception forms can be embedded into a semiotic model of the text-reader interaction in reference to Roland Barthes’ concept of écriture and scription.

Abstract:
Abstract While the internet is often seen as having destroyed book culture, this article is interested in those areas in our contemporary media environment where book and internet culture actually converge. Focusing on the example of BookTube, the author examines how book culture is “done” on the internet and analyzes the values attached to the media practices involved. In particular, in millennial book culture, social aspects of reading are often emphasized. This trend is usually associated with the new affordances of social media and either assessed positively (e.g., by proponents of the internet as a democratizing force) or negatively (e.g., by detractors of the internet as fostering superficiality). The author argues that such a simplistic binary view can be transcended if one takes a historical perspective, reflecting on how sociality and self-fashioning have been integral aspects of book culture for centuries. At the same time, she shows the extent to which BookTube provides new opportunities to socialize around reading.

Abstract:
In the article, the author makes a comparison between printed and electronic (screen) books. Materials are presented that indicate the mass abuse of young people for computer and telephone games. He cites concrete data from social surveys of the level of reading culture in different countries, confirming the opinion about the benefits of reading paper books. Despite some advantages of the e-book – accessibility, volume capacity, cheapness, the author, through scientific evidence, shows the negative aspects of e-reading. In particular, he speaks of a deterioration in vision, muscle tremor, and a lack of aesthetic pleasure. Points to a direct connection between the high culture of reading young people and their education, the development of new knowledge and socialization in society. The critical situation in countries with a low level of reading culture is considered, which predicts an irreversible intellectual collapse and economic stagnation in the future. The question is raised about the possibility of overcoming the crisis of the culture of reading by strengthening the role of the family, parental control and pedagogical influence in educational institutions.

Abstract:
In this article, I report on my reading of a debate between two practitioners and scholars of philosophy with children – Karin Murris and Darren Chetty. The parts of their exchanges I have chosen to focus on relate to a children's book called Tusk Tusk by David McKee. Their respective arguments raise questions for me about the relationship between the starting text (or stimulus) and issues of importance in the wider world. Although Chetty sees benefits in using picture books, he appears to believe there is an over-reliance on fables and other magical tales and that alternative starting points could be more suitable for exploring complex social issues with historical dimensions. Murris, on the other hand, seems to appreciate the lack of historical perspective that is evident in many of her preferred picture books. She values their ‘universal’ and ‘magical’ aspects because they stimulate ‘rhizomatic’ dialogues that are spontaneous and non-hierarchical. In this commentary I trace what, to me, are the most significant lines of argument put forward by Chetty and Murris. In response, I suggest some practical ideas for choosing texts and ‘reading against the text’ – a term both writers use. I also ask and answer the question: ‘In sessions of philosophical dialogue, should adults bring to children for consideration issues they regard as important or refrain from doing so?’

Abstract:
Reading is one of the intellectual activities that only humans have that develops along with the writing system. The culture of reading does not just grow, because human history records the development of the writing system through a very long journey. The study, which involved 41 respondents aged 17-21 years who were randomly selected, showed a shift in the reading culture from print media to online media, related to reading patterns, gender aspects, reading frequency, and duration. From a gender aspect. The shift in the reading culture among young people is also greatly influenced by the characteristics of online media that print media lacks. The practicality and mobility of online media as well as easy access are some of the advantages that attract young media users. Books, newspapers/tabloids, and magazines do not have this characteristic. required Greater effort is more expensive to access print media which is incompatible with the characteristics of the digital natives. Although it has a number of advantages, online media is still considered to have a number of weaknesses compared to print media. One of the weaknesses of online media is the inaccuracy of the information, because the writing often does not apply the principle of cross-checking and confirmation, and contains more subjective opinions. The survey results reinforce the tendency of new media audiences to be not merely positioned as objects that are the target of messages. The tendency to change in reading culture is closely related to audiences and changes in media technology and the meaning of media have renewed the role of audiences to become more interactive with messages, and new media consumers who are dominated by young people can determine how to access according to their wants and needs.

Abstract:
The relevance of the research is based on more than a year-long restrictions experienced by people of Lithuania and worldwide because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical part presents a concept for bibliotherapic recommendations for reading. From an interdisciplinary point of view, the research integrates insights from the domains of psychology, public health, information and communication and literary criticism. Individuals experiencing psychological problems, by delving into literature which encourages reflection of humanistic values, during their in-depth reading process, can not only distract themselves from stressful everyday life but also, while identifying themselves with personages of literary works, better conceive themselves and their environment as well as find new ways to solve their problems. This justifies the applicability of bibliotherapy for those who experience social exclusion during the pandemic. The open survey collected data from 17 experts (12 members of the Lithuanian Bibliotherapy Association and 5 practitioners involved in bibliotherapy projects; 4 study participants from the health service sector (psychotherapists); 6 representatives from the education sector; and 7, from the cultural sector). A recommendatory list of books for passive bibliotherapy sessions was drawn. The list comprises 2 topics: (1) recommendations for general bibliotherapy and (2) fiction for health practitioners (81 books in total, 43% of which are accessible online). Every entry in the list includes metadata required for the identification of the work (AUTHOR and title), a brief substantiation of bibliotherapic aspects formulated by experts and the information about the accessibility of the book on the portal ibiblioteka.lt. The list of bibliotherapic literature can be also useful for health practitioners, social activities professionals, organisers of local community activities, librarians and those who wish to provide help by reading.

Abstract:
The results of the pilot study reported on in this article indicate that the combination of children's books supplementary to the biology lessons does not diminish reading-achieve-ment test scores, and that there seems to be an advantage in domain-specific word knowledge. For 14 weeks, the time normally spent on unsustained silent reading in class was filled in by reading on particular subjects that were being discussed in biology lessons. The basic research assumption was that reading various texts on the same subject would not only positively affect the children's knowledge about this subject but would also improve their reading skills and their attitudes towards reading. The experimental group scored significandy better than their peer group on a domain-specific vocabulary test. This indicates that the books were used as stepping stones for building mental knowledge structures. Tests with respect to the other variables such as reading skills yielded no significant differences between the groups. However, post-hoc analysis showed an advantage for pupils from the lower social groups. Their attitude towards reading impro-ved considerably, in which respect they differed significandy from their peers. The results seem to confirm the ideas expressed in the international literature about content area reading and in aspects of schema theory. By reading the books in combination with the biology lessons, certain schemata could be activated which enable the pupils better to understand the new information and store it firmly in their memory. The redundancy of important words appearing in various contexts is a determinant of word knowledge.

Abstract:
This article encompasses a study of the Sheikh Abdullatif Syakur’s authorship, particularly literary valuable essays. This study departs from the productivity of Sheikh Abdullatif in composing Arabic and Minangkabau with uslub literature. Syekh Abdullatif Syakur's works are interesting to study for several considerations, (1) high intensity in teaching Arabic and recitations of the Qur'an with various methods, (2) his proximity to the tradition of society shown by his essay in the form of nazham, (3) his tenacity in teaching and preaching, and (4) his passion for reading literary texts. Based on that, this study discusses two of Syekh Abdullatif Syakur literary works, namely the book of Khitabah and Nazham Nasehat. The authorship of Sheikh Abdullatif was influenced by several aspects, including his interest in Arabic, his desire to provide knowledge to the community, social conditions in his hometown, the productivity of his teacher in Mecca, and reading books that became his amusement.

Abstract:
The essay focuses on the examination of a selection of children’s picture books on the theme of clothing as an element of identity and as a means of personal and social transformation. The gender stereotype has always deprived children of the freedom to imagine themselves different from the imposed social model. Modern quality literature aims to free childhood from these constraints through stories that encourage the free expression of one's personality. "Clothing and childhood" is one of the binomial in which these themes appear most evident. While developing different plots, each selected book tells a story enriched by several levels of reading, more or less evident, and this is also due to particularly accurate illustrations, capable of adding further nuances to the text. Furthermore, even if characterized by the symbolic presence of clothes, these picture books do not make them the narrative fulcrum. In each of these case studies, clothing becomes a pretext for a journey of self-discovery and affirmation of one's individuality in the world. These case studies are a concrete example of the potential of the picture book as a vehicle of complex concepts and stratifications of complementary or parallel meanings that emerge from the dynamic relationship of the text with the image. Each double page opens multiple, free interpretative paths that can be taken at each reading, as the eye catches new aspects and the thought opens up to new discoveries. The imaginary dress is therefore one of the many parallel topics that it was possible to address through these books, with which the possible interpretations of clothing in children's literature have been explored, highlighting above all how much garments are objects charged with metasignification or with projections of a identity in formation such as the one of children.

Abstract:
Abstract Two noteworthy and successful vernacular rhetoric manuals printed in sixteenth-century England are actually writing manuals, books on how to compose letters: William Fulwood's The Enimie of Idlenesse (1568), and Angel Day's The English Secretorie (1586). Both works reflected and sought to influence literacy habits in the book-reading public, and reveal a wider range of cultural engagement than has previously been thought. In particular, three aspects are likely to have stirred reader interest: a connection for vernacular learners with both the humanist and dictaminal epistolary traditions that formed the core of prestige education; a focus on practical letter exchanges that carry familial and social significance; and a large collection of model letters, in which readers would have found exemplary discourse coupled with proto-fictional and amatory elements that could be enjoyed as entertainment. Understanding the varied appeals of these two books helps us fill out the larger picture relating to how vernacular literacy was valued, developed, and applied.

Abstract In this essay I try to suggest a non-teleological way of reading the history of anthropology, by placing Veena Das’s Textures of the ordinary (2020) in relation to her previous books, beginning with Structure and cognition: aspects of Hindu caste and ritual (1977). Rather than a teleological movement from structuralism to “post-structuralism” or “self-reflexive” work, I point to the continuation and transfiguration of the concepts of structure and event across Das’s different books, as a way of also imagining movements within social theory more broadly, without each successive “paradigm” having to dialectically negate its predecessor. Further, I ask what it means to age or to “mature” within a body of scholarly work, and how we might take an author to be growing simultaneously older and younger, if we take aging in thought not necessarily to be solely a question of chronology or teleology.

Abstract:
This contribution evaluated aspects, such as the frequency of reading, formats, and reading preferences, of secondary school students from Poland, Chile, and Portugal. For this, we started with the data obtained from a questionnaire on reading interests and frequencies, answered by 491 schoolchildren from the referred countries (175 Poles, 178 Chileans, and 138 Portuguese), on which a contrastive analysis was carried out with the aim of observing whether the strategies for promoting and consolidating reading habits should follow similar or divergent guidelines in each of the contexts. The comparison of the results indicates low reading frequencies are common to all the countries of the study, highlighting the lack of interest in reading periodicals (newspapers and magazines) and comics, although in leisure time (particularly on holidays) respondents show a greater interest in reading. Their preferences are oriented toward the adventure genre, which is followed by books on romantic themes, science fiction, mystery, terror, and humor. As for specific works and authors, we found a very heterogeneous and diverse panorama for each country. They show, in general terms, a penchant for paper in relation to reading support (e-books, in particular, are not particularly appreciated); however, a large contingent of schoolchildren are indifferent to the format. Digital reading is largely dominant in social networks. The analysis of the results reveals an important confluence in the three contexts analyzed, pointing in general to a low frequency and motivation toward reading, which is why common strategies are proposed to enhance the reading habits of Polish, Chilean, and Portuguese schoolchildren.

Abstract:
This study documents, over a three-year period, the effects of an Indigo Love of Reading Foundation grant and teacher professional learning in literacy on the motivation for reading in a large urban middle school. The school-wide focus on literacy included: 1) the development of a Literacy Exploratory, a 50-minute daily period set aside for teachers to help students develop as readers, choose books to read, and have time to be involved in a reading community, 2) ongoing teacher professional learning, and 3) a $125,000.00 Indigo Love of Reading Foundation grant. The grant was provided to support the school’s literacy initiatives through purchasing new books for the library and for the development of classroom libraries for every teacher. Using the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) (Wigfield and Guthrie, 1997), students’ favourable ratings of four aspects of intrinsic reading motivation – efficacy, importance, challenge, and social – increased significantly over the course of the study. Teachers’ perceptions indicate they have valued the school-wide focus on literacy, their principal’s support, and the professional learning opportunities that were offered; they pointed to the effect of the grant on helping them create and use classroom libraries in their instructional practice. Students, too, indicated that their motivation for reading has been positively influenced by the school’s focus on literacy, with the suggestion that teachers continue to offer greater choice in their reading material. The findings of this study do not contradict previous research that shows, overall, motivation for reading declines over the middle school years.

Abstract:
In the last several decades, the study of reading, writing, and publishing has emerged as a lively field of inquiry in the humanities and social sciences. Historians and literary scholars have engaged with a number of questions about the impact of changes in technology on reading practices and particularly on the relationship between new technologies of reading and writing and social, religious, and political change. The new field of the “history of the book,” merging aspects of social and intellectual history with the tools of analytical and descriptive bibliography, came to the fore in the second half of the twentieth century at the same time that the emergence of new forms of electronic media raised many questions for social scientists about the ways that technological change have affected aspects of human communication in our time. Meanwhile, while the field of book history emerged initially among early modernists interested in the impact of printing technology, the issues raised regarding authorship, publication, relations between orality and the written word, dissemination, and reception have enriched the study of earlier periods.

Abstract:
Introduction. The research aims to trace the way of nascency and formation of a cult of book as a unique phenomenon in the Russian culture during the 18th –20th centuries, and identify the reasons and factors that determined the high status of literature in Russian society, its role in the development of national identity; contributed to the fact that the book became not only and not so much a way of leisure for Russian citizens, but a cultural need. Materials and methods. The study is based on the methods of historical and comparative analysis, generalization and synthesis. It also employs the method of actualization, which makes it possible to focus attention on the facts, events, phenomena, observations, ideas and conclusions that are supposed to be of scientifi c and pedagogical value for understanding the role of book, reading, and culture by the people of modern Russia and Literature as an academic discipline in the 21st century’s school education. A versatile approach to comprehending the long-term historical establishment of a cult of books and reading in Russian culture of the 18th-20th centuries made it possible to objectify the results of the study. Results of study. The multidimensional analysis of the emergence and formation of the “cult of book”, i.e., the cult of reading in Russian society, since the time of Ancient Russia, has covered a variety of aspects of understating this phenomenon, including philosophy; culture; literature as a part of culture and a type of art, as exponent of public and national identity; literature as an academic subject in the school system; psychology of “book reading”; book and its place in spiritual life of the Russian people in different epochs, including the current state of Russian society; journalism and book publishing, etc. Findings of the study indicate that the long-lasting book cult phenomenon in Russian culture is due to a consistent and verify ed system of creating a personality, upbringing a reader, familiarizing with reading, which embraces all social and moral institutes (family, school, culture, society, and the State). Conclusion. The study has sharpened the issue of reading books, their place and role in modern digital society, which has become particularly relevant in the 21st century. It is obvious that only a systems approach to addressing this issue, which requires joint eff orts of all the institutes mentioned, can provide positive results if we do not want to lose the readers already in their early childhood.

Participants were 61 mother–child dyads (children’s mean age 5 years, 8 months) from low socioeconomic strata (SES). Mother–child SBR and their conversation following the reading were video-recorded. Children’s social understanding was evaluated via their ability to distinguish between social norms violations and moral violations. Prosocial behavior was evaluated through children’s sharing behavior. Results showed that during SBR, mothers and children from low SES tended to stick to the written text, whereas following the book reading, they elaborated beyond the explicit aspects of the text. Furthermore, references to socioemotional issues during mother–child conversation correlated with the child’s social understanding and prosocial behavior, beyond the child’s vocabulary level.

Abstract:
The article deals with the issues of F. Aquinas ' social teaching about the teacher, teaching and upbringing, which have not yet been studied in socio-political science. The article deals in more detail with the issues of F. Aquinas ' social teaching – knowledge and cognition, sign and word, language of learning, moral, moral and aesthetic aspects of teaching, on the transition and generation of knowledge from a student by a teacher, etc. The article notes that according to Aquinas, real education and upbringing is impossible without the use of authorities, authoritative books, their reading and interpretation. Learning means that one person transmits information about their knowledge or skill to another person. A teacher can be a person who independently expands his knowledge, is able to clearly formulate this knowledge for himself and transmit it to the student in an information accessible form for the student. At the same time, the article also pays attention to discussion issues.

Abstract:
The article reveals the theoretical prerequisites for the formation of the foundations of reading competence of younger schoolchildren through involvement in reading activities. The logical sequence of concepts is singled out: reading ‒ reading activity ‒ reading competence. The essence of reading is proved; it consists of an attempt to connect reading with reading activity and its results ‒ readiness to read a book independently and the ability to use the acquired knowledge for one’s own purposes. It has been established that becoming a reader, interest in books is born through knowledge of books and actions with them, reluctance to read can be provoked by learning itself. The definition of “reading activity”, which has an indisputable value as a universal human value, as work and creativity, as an opportunity for the comprehensive development of the personality of a junior high school student, has been revealed. Considering reading activity as a system of purposeful and motivated actions, we believe that it should be motivated by adequate motives directly related to its content. It is assumed that the formed foundations of the reading competence of younger schoolchildren can be achieved by developing the specified reading skills and knowledge, but not at the expense of extensive methods, but as a result of pedagogical modeling, the development of special technologies for teaching reading, developing personal-value, information-communicative and educational-cognitive abilities of younger schoolchildren. The following components of reading activity are distinguished: the motivational sphere, the cognitive basis of the reading process, the content aspect of reading, the communicative sphere, the informational basis as the ability to use literary terms, the emotional and aesthetic basis of reading. The concept of “reading activity” and “reading competence” was compared. We connect the prospects of further research with solving the issues of formation of such reading competences of junior high school students, such as the competence of personal self-improvement, cultural and social competences, with the development of technology for training teachers for the formation of reading competence of junior high school students and the technology of continuity between the initial and basic stages of the educational process. Keywords: prerequisites; formation; reading competence; younger schoolchildren; reading activity; reading; primary education; reading skills; reader.

Abstract:
In today’s digital age, content is no longer tied to a specific media format as it can come in any form, including in the digital format that can be distributed online. In the context of the content for book, since approximately 500 years ago, the printed book, which consists of the paper, print, binding, and glue, has been a prominent medium for content delivery. However, as digital technology advances, e-book has emerged along with printed book as an alternative to readers in the market. In some developed countries, the trend of e-book reading and buying have increased noticeably. However, looking at the broader context of the impact, e-book is only among the many aspects that have affected the industry. As argued by scholars, the end-product of the book industry is not the only aspect being affected, instead, the whole book creation process is experiencing changes. In order to have a better understanding of these issues, this study attempts to explore the current condition of Malaysian book publishing industry by analysing the responses of selected local trade publishing companies towards technological development in their pursuit of organizational success. In doing so, a case study of six local trade publishing companies comprises of large, small and medium, and government-funded publishers is conducted. From the case studies analysis, it is evident that these companies have responded vigorously to technological developments in their pursuit of organizational success. The finding shows that they are adopting the multi-platform strategy in almost every aspect of their business practices, especially in marketing and distributing of their content. In marketing, the use of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube have help them in promoting their books. Meanwhile, for the distribution of books, the emergence of online channels such as e-commerce, as well as mobile application, WhatsApp, have now opened up an opportunity for the publishers to enhance their sales. The Internet, computer technology, and social media are also becoming rather important in their book publishing practices.

Abstract:
Purpose. The presentation of results and analyses regarding on the journeys of ethical, cultural and social provenance in narratives available in contemporary Polish literature illustrated by chosen examples. Method. To prepare the presentation, qualitative methods were used together with the analysis technique of the content/plot of novels of autobiographies of contemporary Polish prose writers and travelers. The author analysed representative texts of such highly-regarded figures as philosophers by profession – Marek Kamiński, Joanna Bator, Krzysztof Środa – and wellknown writers: Andrzej Stasiuk, Krzysztof Varga, Ziemowit Szczerek and others. Findings. Research showed the authors’ great interest in history, culture, ethical and social issues during their numerous peregrinations all over Poland, Southern Europe and Central and Eastern Europe. The narration of the chosen author-travelers contains numerous reflections of existential-philosophical and cultural-social nature, focusing on sociological analysis. The interpretative framework in the works of the discussed authors fluctuates around local, global and glocal problems. Research and conclusions limitations. The study concerned only the works of Polish authors and concentrated on their journeys all over Poland, Southern and Central and Eastern Europe; borderlands, peripheral and cross-border areas. The phenomenon of the journeys of the analysed authors lies in the fact that their experiences are subjective, and their expeditions are undertaken to a considerable degree in mental space, a depicted world; they are unique imaginary adventures. Practical implications. Reading the works discussed in the article expands knowledge on culture, history and the society of countries where the authors undertake their ethically responsible travels. Their books can successfully become an element of literary/cultural tourism. Originality. In literature on the subject works concerning individual authors discussed in the article are dispersed. The advantage of the presented text is the depiction and analysis of the creative output of the examined authors in one place, including the characteristics of their journeys: spiritual, culinary, pilgrimage, cognitive and escape. Type of paper. The article is a review and a scientific, reflective essay.

Abstract:
In the time of the Internet and social networks, unconventional actors have an opportunity to establish themselves in the field of literature and influence it. Bookstagramers are literary field agents who work alongside professional/academic literary critique and dispose of the symbolic capital gained in virtuality. In reality, bookstagramers play a critical discourse role: they shape fashion (of reading or the relevance of a particular genre of literature), they might influence (and are influencing) a community of professional critics, creating a specific literary culture that reflects social network logic, and so on. The purpose of this article is to look at how Lithuanian bookstagramers evaluate literary works by posting on the social network Instagram (the intentions of these evaluations and their possible impact on the addressee). With the help of media and communication theories, the perspective of literary sociology, the critique of the reader’s response, applying the survey method, we delve into the empirical material (bookstagramers survey data). The research revealed the sociological picture of a Lithuanian bookstagramer, the intentions of writing about books on Instagram, and the specifics of the information published. In some cases, this study confirms the more general socio-cultural and psychological aspects previously known (women are more interested in culture, read more books, seek to communicate, make connections). A closer look at the respondents’ responses creates the preconditions for seeing the reality and virtuality of non-professional literary reflections in a particular society, where speaking is paramount. This discourse, driven by Instagram’s logic of architecture and social networking in general, does not lead to a broader discussion, deeper reflections on the works, as it is more reminiscent of brief impressionist speeches about a book read, sometimes inserting excursions about other personal hobbies (not necessarily related to reading). For this reason, it is not appropriate to apply the title of criticism to such recordings, but they should be considered a part of the discourse of Lithuanian literary criticism.

Abstract:
The German-American anthropologist Franz Boas (1858–1942) was one of the most protean and influential anthropologists of the twentieth century. In part based on his book Primitive Art (1927), this essay considers his theory of the beholder’s share in constructing the significance of visual form and in interpreting its meaning. Boas’s analysis of what he called “contradictions” between his indigenous informants’ exegeses of form lay at the heart of his conclusion that individual agents “read-in” to form some of the most crucial aspects of social experience that are most salient and specific to them. “Reading-in,” I argue, is the verbal speaking of visual “seeing-as,” and it infuses visual form with the diversity and particularity of a speaker’s grammatical choices undertaken within their natural human language(s). This model might now seem self-evident. At the time, however, it opened up the possibility of an “anthropology” of art and, to an extent as yet unrealized, the possibilities of its sociology and history. The essay evaluates Boas’s model in relation to other well-known accounts of the beholder’s share in art history, philosophy, and elsewhere and concludes with a discussion of the uptake of his idea in the “structuralism” of Roman Jakobson and Claude Lévi-Strauss.

Abstract:
Children’s literature is an important part of national culture. Its mission has always been to help mature a young person, to form valuable foundations of personality. The aim of the article is to reveal the work of early Lithuanian children’s literature, especially of the 19th century, playing an important role in the life of society, i. e. playing the role of a mechanism of cultural and social inclusion, changing society and human mentality. It is necessary to emphasise that the field of children’s literature discussed here also includes early Lithuanian writing, which cannot be directly considered children’s literature, but it undoubtedly integrated the care for children (in the form of catechisms, elementary publishing, etc.). What functions of cultural and social inclusion did the texts intended for children (or also for children) perform, and what impact did they have? Methods used: sociology of literature, cultural analysis, interpretation of the text. The phenomenon of inclusion is an important aspect of Lithuanian children’s literature and culture. This is also testified by the history of Lithuanian books for children and works of particular writers. It is significant that in the cultural situation of the 19th century, children’s literature contributed to overcoming children’s illiteracy and helped create and unite the readership community in the making. Children (and often youth) were getting used to the book, a completely new form of communication for them. Little by little, people became aware of the importance of reading, writing, and education in general. Some texts of educational type have been left by Lithuanian writers of the 18th–19th centuries, and their traditions were continued by the creators of the early 20th century, portraying the fate of the book smuggler, the wish of a country child to learn, the authority of a published book, and other similar aspects. The book and the ability to read decrease seclusion, include the child and the youth into community life, and open wider horizons for thinking. Different aspects of inclusion (and there are more of them than mentioned in this paper) can also be found in modern children’s literature. A book and literature dedicated to the child or young person help to survive social seclusion, isolation and show the ways and means of overcoming them. Finally, children’s literature adjusts to the social environment, participates in society modelling, change, and establishes itself as an integral part of an inclusive society. Today children’s literature is perceived as an integral part of an inclusive society.

Abstract:
Introduction. The paper focuses on the pressing issues of today – the methodological insight into the experience of going through the situation of isolation in its various forms in the literature. The study addresses the concept of “isolation” in an interdisciplinary context: philosophical, social, psychological, cultural, and literary. The methodological aspect is fundamental: tools for the analysis and interpretation of literary texts related to the phenomenon of isolation are developed. The paper aims to identify relevant methodological approaches to the analysis and interpretation of works of the 20th-21st centuries touching upon the isolation issues. Materials and methods. The scientific prerequisite for writing this paper was the International Leiderman Readings in Yekaterinburg, the theme of which was “Isolation as a literary situation”. The methodological precondition and method of diagnosing the perception of the topic were a philosophical essay written by philology students of the South Ural Humanities Pedagogical University and Pedagogical Institute of Irkutsk State University during the period of self-isolation in 2020 and 2022. The multi-vector nature of the concept and the issue of isolation, as well as a variety of semantic facets of the isolation experience in students’ essays dictate a certain choice of literary texts for analysis and interpretation in literature lessons: forced isolation of a person as a form of experiment on him; forced social isolation caused by war; isolation of people due to the epidemic; and finally, psychological isolation of a modern teenager, generated by digital environment. The relevant issues are resolved through the teacher’s use of dialogue-based, reflexive technologies. Results. The study analyzes the cultural and sociological sources of the problem of isolation and indicates its types. The response of modern youth (future teachers of literature) to this problem is revealed and relevant aspects of its interpretation by readers are identified. The selection of texts and methodological technologies for working with the isolation problems in extracurricular reading lessons is carried out. Conclusion: The conclusion is made that it is necessary to familiarize young readers with the phenomenon of isolation in artistic, life, and social aspects. Immersion of the reading student in the literary experience of going through the isolation by heroes of books with reflexive and hermeneutic techniques and techniques of analysis and interpretation of texts actualizes their personal experience and emotional sufferings, thereby expanding their value world and experience of socialization.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the light of the material turn in the Humanities some aspects of Julio Cortázar’s (1914–1984) work become very evident today as a laboratory of the future. For Cortázar, reading was a transforming impulse, part of a process of liberation from mental ties to which he contributed as an author, challenging the barrier between the fantastic and the real, the limit between the human and the animal, between the living and the inert. Thus, as a critic on blind Modernity, Cortázar, from his stories, questions anthropocentrism in a gesture that in the current crisis of the Anthropocene could not be more topical. Moreover, while he supported the transformation of people’s material conditions of life in Latin America, he innovated and celebrated literature in intermedial texts that are the decanted result of a creative performance, embedded in the strongly transcultural context of a diaspora that was first voluntary and then became exile.

Abstract:
In the second half of the eighteenth century the number of English school grammars underwent a dramatic increase, and grammar writers used title pages, prefaces and, in general, other book components to attract potential buyers. A very common commercial strategy consisted in adding supplementary material to the grammars. Among this material, a type of supplement, commonly called “directions for reading”, is often found in these grammars. This was intended to provide guidance on reading aloud to students, since a successful and effective oral delivery was considered a polite social asset and an important professional skill at the time. This article aims (i) to present a representative list of school grammars of English with “directions for reading”, (ii) to compare the directions for reading contained in different works to identify those aspects considered essential for a good reading performance, and, finally, (iii) to explore the relationship between these directions for reading and some works of the eighteenth-century elocutionary movement.

Abstract:
For researchers, early childhood educators, and art educators, the contribution of this article is to expand meaning in drawing activities. Perspective in reading pictures using visual culture theory, especially visual grammar. This study aims to share knowledge and experiences in reading early childhood pictures from different perspectives. This research method uses a qualitative descriptive approach through visual material data collection techniques and analysis of three metafunctions. The objects of research are three pictures of children aged 7-8 years, namely the works of winners of the I-III children's painting competition held by PP-IPTEK TMII in 2018. Aspects of the representation structure, interaction system, and composition of each image are analyzed. The research findings conclude that the ideational function of the three images shows a narrative structure of representation and raises the discourse of resistance to the actual situation. The interpersonal function of the three images places the image maker in the real world and as an object of display impersonally. The textual functions of the three images position social life on other planets as a reflection of hope for real social life. Keywords: children's drawings, visual culture, visual system, three metafunctions References: Butler, S., Gross, J., & Hayne, H. Abstract:
Abstract:Assumes that the community library, named here as non-formal education institution, seeks to emancipate individuals from the community in which it operates, with practices that promote human rights. <p><strong>Abstract:</strong> This article examines the implications of globalization on contemporary Islamic education, using a literature study. The data was obtained through literature in the form of reading books and online sources. The method used is descriptive analysis, where the method is considered appropriate to determine the ongoing phenomenon. The results of the study show that education cannot be separated from the social, economic and cultural aspects. Thinking education as something that stands alone without anything to do with the social aspects that surround it will result in real alienation. The existence of globalization has an impact on the education system and function in the form of challenges and opportunities. The challenge is how existing education can be influenced from various sectors, like the economic, social and cultural sectors. Meanwhile, opportunities can be seen how current education can create a more comprehensive and flexible education system. The world of education must organize itself to be accepted by the demands of the times, but in structuring the education system it must pay attention to the Qur'an and Sunnah as the basis for the legacy of Islamic education thought.</p><p><strong>Keywords:</strong> globalization, Islamic education, opportunities, challenges</p>

Abstract:
This paper explores the connections between cultural consumption, ideology, and identity formation in one particular city of the Soviet Ukraine during the Brezhnev era before perestroika. This industrial city, Dniepropetrovsk, was closed to foreigner visits by the KGB in 1959 because it became the location for one of the biggest missile factories in the Soviet Union. Given its closed, sheltered existence, Dniepropetrovsk became a unique Soviet social and cultural laboratory in which various patterns of late socialism collided with the new Western cultural infl uences. Using archival documents, periodicals, personal diaries and interviews as historical sources, this paper focuses on how various aspects of cultural consumption (reading books, listening and dancing to Western music) among the youth of the Soviet “closed city” contributed to various forms of cultural identifi cation, which eventually became elements of post-Soviet Ukrainian national identity.

Abstract:
Books and artworks have a long common history. Written texts, as well as the joy of reading and the act of writing them, appeared in pieces of art from early Antiquity onwards, well before the current form of the book itself was invented. Apart from indicating readers and writers, the book had also become a basic symbol of culture, education, or the attribute of saints. On the other hand, there are many artists who create special books, i.e. special one-copy and one-edition volumes, not only containing the artist’s drawings or paintings but the whole assemblage of the book (and often even the paper itself) is the creator’s own work. From the Early Modern Age and especially from Romanticism onwards, the sketchbook of the artist grew rapidly in its importance. In this paper, however, I would like to survey another aspect: when the book, and especially its material property or physicality, serves as the basis of the creation of a novel artwork. In other words, I focus on pieces of art where the book is not simply a depicted motif or an attribute and it is not even a newly-created book-art object. Hence my current examination aims to analyze the phenomenon of the book, as how its materiality and referential ability may inspire the artist to further develop considerations on cultural, social and political issues. Works by Sophia Pompéry, Ákos Czigány, the art collective Slavs and Tatars, Jorge Méndez Blake and Carla Filipe are analyzed.Article received: April 15, 2019; Article accepted: June 23, 2019; Published online: September 15, 2019; Review ArticleHow to cite this article: Somhegyi, Zoltán. Abstract:
This paper reports the pedagogical experience of creating a book club to foster the reading of short stories from a critical literacy perspective at a high school in Bogotá, Colombia. The Book Club arose as an after-school program where students, who were interested in the proposal, were free to join. First, the paper presents the fundamental concepts that guided the implementation. Then, it describes the central elements of the pedagogical experience: context, curricular platform, procedures, and activities. The final discussion centers on the role of a critical literacy approach that encouraged participants to go beyond concerns about the grammatical and linguistic aspects of the foreign language to focus on meaning-making. Also, to concentrate on responding and transacting with the texts while engaging in dialogic interactions that allowed them to share background knowledge, life experiences, social and individual issues of their realities and interests, and most importantly, enjoy the act of reading in a foreign language as it was seen as a social-situated practice.

<p style="text-align: justify;">This study discusses students’ responses and perceptions on the e-book of Local History of West Java (Indonesia) developed by the researchers. It uses a Research and Development approach and experimental method. Data collection techniques used in this study are observation, interviews, and focus group discussions with interactive model data analysis. The research subjects were students and teachers of high schools in West Java. They were taken as the subjects as they can represent the region. The History E-book is, however, published on ebooksejarah.id page while the system was developed by using SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) Waterfall model. The results of the study indicate that the components of the e-book on the aspects of the materials, presentation, and completeness are overall suitable to be used by students. The materials are considered to be still inapplicable and not contextual. Further, they are still lack of latest issues as well as photos/illustrations. The study of student responses on the e-book reinforces that the zoomers (those belong to Generation Z) prefer to digital learning media because their social life belongs to the online world. Local history e-books should better adapt to the learning style of Generation Z, who prefer visuals and hands-on experiences to reading texts. Thus, e-book development needs to be equipped with various learning media in short audios and video explainers, animations, and infographics.</p>

Abstract:
The article examines the problems of understanding music from the point of view of interaction of emotional perceiving and theoretical reflection. Basing on the case of two works on Schubert and J. S. Bach, written by outstanding musicians of our time, I. Bostridge and J. E. Gardiner, the role of author’s subject position is examined as well as reconstruction of historical and cultural context of the works as the prerequisite for deeper understanding. The author of the article points out changes in the attitude to music pieces after reading these books, which shows relevance of music cognitivism, not diminishing the impact of music, but, on the contrary, showing its new aspects if the author combines personal experience and research capabilities. Since both books are about music containing verbal element (vocal cycle and cantatas and Passions) the problem of interrelation of music and word has been regarded. In analyzing I. Bostridge’s book the accent is placed on recreation of historical and cultural factors connected with different songs of the cycle. In examining Gardiner’s work attention is given to elements of biographical method which are used to get more versatile notion about the composer’s music through which different traits of his character, often ambivalent, are disclosed. Interaction between sensual perception and intellectual reflection is an important process not only in gaining knowledge about a musical piece, but in extending social and cultural experience of the listener and the performer. Special accent is placed on regarding subjective approach to the works performed and analysed used by the authors as the result of merging of performing experience and research work. Such approach is relevant for contemporary art studies in which the subject/object duality is deconstructed and multidisciplinary research prevails.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to introduce new approach to explicate the term of «book». It implicates inter- and transdisciplinary study of accumulated knowledge on the book theory, combined basic schemes and terminological systems in the book theory, documentology and related areas, identification of conflicts and their elimination. The author suggests to use widely the documentoriented terms introduced by Yury N. Stolyarov and Galina N. Shvetsova-Vodka; differentiated modelling and typological classification of documents and other objects to deliver social information to the society; and convergence of their typological and ontological features. These would provide for the unity of theoretical and ontological knowledge but also of taxon and metrological and structural aspects of their theorization. The result of the study is that the «book» term is defined as an astadial unit of activities to provide social information to the society. The book is an information product, significant in its semiotic value and embodied in the form of scrolls, blocks of bound pages, laser, optical discs, records, digital devices for reading, etc.: intended for reading (listening or tactile sensing) and fulfills the function of transmitting knowledge and other semantic content to addressees.

Abstract:
In this qualitative study, I explore how one group of fifth grade African American boys performed masculinity through classroom reading practices. I focus on two aspects of boys' experiences with masculinity: first, how reading practices made visible some of the ways that masculinities were performed in the classroom, particularly how boys defined themselves in relation to each other and to girls; and, second, how boys' performances of masculinity were disrupted through a particular reading experience in which they were required to read texts that they had previously rejected on the basis of gender. Interest in masculinity has recently increased, both in literacy and other humanities and social science fields. Yet, few studies have examined the intersection of masculinity and literacy in classrooms, particularly for boys of color. This study grounds boys' practices of masculinity and reading in recent discussions of masculinity in the popular press and theories of performance, critical and poststructuralist theories and scholarship on the intersections of race and gender. Drawing on interviews, fieldnotes, and transcripts of small group discussions, I show how the boys' performances of masculinity, particularly the relationship between dominant and subordinated masculinities and dichotomous notions of masculine/feminine, both shaped and were shaped by boys' choices of what to read and their conversations about books. These boys' experiences point to the complexities and possibilities of engaging masculinities in literacy classrooms and encouraging boys to adopt a different discourse of masculinity that is less reliant on defining itself in opposition to femininity and other masculinities.
