For over thirty years demography has featured prominently on the urban history agenda. As long ago as 1963, in an article subtitled ‘On broadening the relevance and scope of urban history’, Eric Lampard emphasized that ‘An autonomous social history ought to begin with a study of population: its changing distribution in time and space’. In 1968 Leo Schnore suggested concentration upon ‘the demographic and ecological aspects of urban life’, according demography the number one priority. The re-approachment took place from 1960s, and the last fifteen years saw more intensive cooperation and more insights about possible mutual benefits that could be achieved through combining of methodologies and rev

Northwest Portland, Oregon, is culturally clearly defined as a gentrifying neighborhood and was, therefore, chosen as to empirically assess this process by comparing the 1980 with the 1990 census data. Abstract:
This report investigates how Windrush Square, a public space in London (UK) is experienced by people from diverse demographic backgrounds, and how these everyday interactions and tensions shape experiences of social cohesion and alienation. This space was selected as a case study as it captures the underlying tensions of the UK’s colonial past and its continuing impact in the present day. We first conducted three expert interviews to shed light on the role of the Greater London Authority in public space governance, landscape design and wellbeing of migrant populations, and community-led neighb

We would also need to decide whose well-being counts, or counts more than that of others. Finally, I briefly mention the potential r

Abstract:
As countries across the globe pursue economic development, the improvement of individual and societal well-being has increasingly become an overarching goal. In the global South, in particular, high levels of poverty, inequality and deteriorating social fabrics remain significant challenges. Programmes and projects for addressing these challenges have had some, but limited, impact. This occasional paper analyses well-being in Gauteng province from a capability perspective, using a standard ‘capability approach’ consistent with Amartya Sen’s first conceptualisation, which was then operationalis
