In 1968 Leo Schnore suggested concentration upon ‘the demographic and ecological aspects of urban life’, according demography the number one priority. Abstract:
Demographic changes in modern developed and open societies meet the etiological criteria of real and potential phylogenetic threats. The mechanism of species survival developed over the centuries by the quantitative dimension has now been almost completely deconstructed. Naturalistic factors that determine lifestyles and procreative behaviors have undergone a certain erosion, mainly due to gaining significant autonomy from the influence of nature due to the development of biomedicine and the popularization of hygiene habits, but also as a result of social, economic, and widely cultural changes

AbstractScholars have recently argued that globalisation processes have significantly altered not just the productive but reproductive sphere. ‘Reproduction’ is formulated to include both biological and social reproduction, and which at the individual level requires ‘care’ throughout the life-cycle – that is, from cradle to grave – in sustaining the body in its corporeal and affective aspects. Concepts that have emerged in the literature in recent decades such as the ‘transnational family’, ‘global householding’ and ‘global care chain’ draw attention to the observation that the formation and s

AbstractThe purpose of the paper is to describe permanent emigration from Poland during the first decade of the 21st century. This period of time was characterised by major political and economic changes in Poland and elsewhere in the world. The paper is based on data obtained from the GUS Demographic Yearbook for the years prior to 2011. The spatial analysis in the paper is based on the current administrative division of Poland - voivodships. This includes the number of migrants and their demographic and social structure. Finally, the paper addresses the direction of migrant flow in terms of

AbstractStrong social bonds typically develop between dyadic pairs of male chimpanzees. These bonds are manifest in several contexts, including association, grooming, and proximity. Here we demonstrate that social bonds exist at a higher level of organization among males living in an extremely large community at Ngogo, Kibale National Park, Uganda. An analysis of over 2,500 hours of observation of 35 individuals revealed two distinct subgroups of male chimpanzees. Males that composed each subgroup can be identified on the basis of their tendency to associate in temporary parties. Matrix permut

This article reviews conventional theories about different aspects of labor migration: its origins, stability over time, and patterns of migrant settlement. For each of these aspects, we provide alternative explanatory hypotheses derived from the notions of increasing articulation of the international system and the social embeddedness of its various subprocesses, including labor flows. A typology of sources and outcomes of contemporary immigration is presented as an heuristic device to organize the diversity of such movements as described in the empirical literature.

The revolution which introduced new techniques of molecular biology applied to DNA analysis enormously accelerated the progress in most areas of medicine and biology. Techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction analysis and sequencing are widely used for diagnosis of a number of diseases, for genetic screening, phylogenetic analysis and population studies. Moreover, it became possible to study genetic relationships of extinct to contemporary organisms and even to follow evolutionary events. Variation in DNA sequences, especially that of humans, is fascinating not only for o

The article attempts a theoretical and methodological understanding of historical and demographic reconstructions in the context of “social history”. The parameters of the “demand” for the reconstruction of the past as a set of activities of the masses are shown. Historical experience is perceived in the context of unmotivated behavioral practices that lead to a procedural understanding of demographic trends. The principles and potential of such studies are analyzed; the humanitarian orientation of cognitive procedures is characterized. Examples of successful application of quantitative modeli
