Abstract:
Sustainability emerged as a general trend in architecture within its dimensions (environmental, economic, and social) which affected on certain types of buildings especially the modern mosque architecture. The social dimension of sustainability represents the area of research interest, as it does not show the extent of its influence in determining the design characteristics of the mosque's architecture. hence, the research problem was (lack of knowledge perception of the mosque indicators that make it a social type and the absence of a clear vision of the vocabulary most achieved in local modern mosque as well as the nature of the criteria that determines the acceptance of this type of mosques within the local community).According to this the research goals are (Identify the indicators that characterize the mosque as a social type, determine the nature of the most achieved indicators within the local model, determine the index nature of the collective acceptance for this building type.) The research determined the indicators that characterised mosque as social type and found that they are related to the indicators related to making place and living occupancy of social sustainability. These affected on layout, spatial organization and formal aspects of mosque. The local mosque achieved these indicators partially and its design was closer to the model of the social mosque within its vocabulary which was reflected within layout and spatial aspect as it was more accomplished.as well as The research concluded that the cultural background and the living level of the recipient represent the nature of the indicator that responsible for common acceptance for this type although it does not represent a new type of mosques, but represent an extension of the comprehension functional role of the Prophet's Mosque.

Abstract:
This article’s aim is to discuss the strategies of radicalism preventing in mosques through strengthening Aswaja Annahdliyah’s Islamic-based of mosque takmir management that is tolerant, moderate, and upholds the Islamic principle of Rahmatan Lil-alamin. This field research uses descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was obtained from interviews and observations. The results of the study mentioned that from 104 mosques in Kandangan Subdistrict, Temanggung Regency, only 96 mosques had been noted in the Nahdlatul Ulama Mosque Takmir Institute (LTM NU), while 8 other mosques had been not. After the research was carried out, four mosques were joined and had become members of the NU LTM and implemented the takmir management of the Aswaja Annahdliyah based mosque. There are seven strategies carried out, namely; (1) strengthening management of the ideals (management of the physical building of the mosque), imarah (management of the activities of the mosque), and riayah (management of mosque hygiene), (2) forming LTM NU at the sub-district and village level, (3) forming management of mosques takmir by involving all elements, (4) making syllabus/ curriculum for worship timetable, education and ritual activities, (5) giving tasks to takmir to maximize mosque functions, (6) strengthening administration management and symbolizing mosques, (7) strengthening social economic empowerment in mosques. The strategy of strengthening the takmir of mosques management has been aligned with Talcott Parsons’ structural functionalism theory with schemes adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency (AGIL). There are challenges and opportunities that faced. In the internal aspects, namely limited access to the city center, low human resources, and lack of comprehensive knowledge about the management of takmir of mosque External aspects, namely the existence of four mosques still controlled by radical Islamic groups, and often there are religious studies in mosques from radical groups.

Abstract:
In the historical period, different mosques were built in the Anatolian side; the differences in size, typology and style were affected by the climate conditions, cultural and social aspects, availability of materials and the construction techniques of the region they were built in. The ceiling structure, which is the most influencing factor for mosque acoustics, is designed with either curvilinear elements or a flat ceiling for mosques. In the context of our case study, the eight historical mosques in Turkey, with different materials and types of ceiling structures, are investigated in terms of acoustical characteristics in the main prayer hall. Acoustical data are collected by measurements to reveal how the formal differences and material change in ceiling structures affect the acoustic environments of mosques with similar volume. Distribution of acoustical parameters and the suitability of the values obtained through measurements are compared to reflect the effect of architectural features on the acoustical characteristics of the prayer hall.

Abstract:
Mosques around the world have been serving the Muslim community for religious and social purposes since the beginning of Islam. Mosques have played an important role to educate and create a peaceful yet proper cosmos for its visitors. However, nowadays, mosques are not only used for its educational component, but on occasion have been transformed into places to serve multi-ethnic and multi-religious communities during natural disasters. This paper is an attempt to surf through the recent publications that discuss natural disasters and the containment of such incidents. Four case studies have been presented to draw a picture of a mosque’s role before, during and after natural disasters. Although many researchers have investigated this role, there still is an urgent need to understand the several examples of cases globally and the issues the researchers have dealt with in such incidents. Selected papers have been reviewed to study the conclusions found in the most recent publications in this field. The aim of this paper is to find out the missing aspects and the gap in the literature for the purpose of future studies and designs.

Abstract:
The Ibadis are a Muslim religious minority with a long history and a rich philosophical and theological literature. This research claims that the Ibadis adherence to strict and puritan Islamic principles has not only affected their individual and social behavior, but also marked their approach to architecture, and the construction of cities. This article investigates the architecture of mosques developed in the four significant regions where this network of communities has settled since the ninth century: Oman, the M'zab valley in Algeria, Djerba in Tunisia, and Jebel Nafusa in Libya. Many features distinguish the architectural style of these from the typical mosque style. Although it may appear plural in its spatial arrangement, volumes, material and construction methods, the architecture of Ibadi mosques displays an “air de Famille” that relates them to their Arab-Berber origins and Ibadi religious principles. The present research is a comparative analysis of representative samples of this architecture in all the regions inhabited by the Ibadis. The second layer of scrutiny consisted of exploring the origins of its distinctive features in the meanings of the Ibadi Fiqh that concerned the act of building. It is a pioneering investigation of the relationship between the Ibadi religious principles and the architecture of their mosques. This research has established that the Ibadi Fiqh has addressed some aspects of the design of mosques and therefore have impacted, if not produced, some of the distinctive features of this architecture.

Abstract:
Functionally, the involvement of women in the context of Islamic broadcasting in mosques seems to increasingly exist. However, structurally female board is still far less than men. When women enter the stewardship of the mosque, there is an opportunity for women to communicate with male administrators in the preparation and realization of Islamic broadcasting programs in the mosque. Thus the function of the mosque as a medium of Islamic communication can be played in various aspects. The focus of this research is how women's involvement in Islamic broadcasting communication in mosque. The research method is field research with approach of sociology and communication of Islam, through interview and observation found in Masjid Raya Mujahidin Pontianak there is group of woman who initially active communicate Islam through majelis taklim, then appreciated to enter the management of mosque, then managed to make mosque as medium of communication of Islamic broadcasting . From this research found a new formulation in the activities of Islamic broadcasting communication in the mosque, the mosque became the center of Islamic broadcasting communication for women, the mosque as a medium of social contact of women, and the mosque as a medium of Islamic communication in family empowerment.

Abstract:
The concept of employment for the Islamic architectural heritage takes great place and attention by architects or those who study and analyze the Islamic heritage in architecture. However, most of the architectural applications that appear on the ground focus on the physical aspect of that heritage as it represents the visual image of it and the most relevant aspect of the memory of Islamic societies in the Eastern and Western Islamic world. This causes the problem of the artisanal transport of the heritage of the Islamic architectural heritage without looking at this heritage objectively and understanding the social and cultural circumstances and causes that led to its emergence as it is. The research assumes that the Islamic architectural heritage possesses rich intellectual and material resources that can be utilized nowadays in contemporary projects if they are removed from imitation and direct form transport. The research focuses specifically on the architecture of the mosques and selects two old models, the Ahmad Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo and the Mashhad in the ninth century AD, and the Meikat Mosque in Medina and Mashad at the end of the 20th century. The research aims at shedding light on the concept of followers in the building of contemporary Islamic mosques as a mechanism for employing the Islamic architectural heritage and identifying the defects in the process of followings and the surrounding areas in the building of contemporary mosques.

Abstract:
When trying to understand the history of Islam in France, the mosque, the most salient symbol of Islam, seems to be a central issue around which policies are developed and much passion and controversy is generated. The mosque has in fact always played a key role in the relation that France has had with Islam and is a kind of indicator of the degree of openness of the society in any given historical period. How did this symbol often se en as a destabilising element to the local French way of life by exacerbating existing tensions, come to be at the heart of the representational problem regarding Islam and France? The permanent settlement of Muslim immigrants, the rise of Islamism and the development of various rivalries between Islamic organisations in France is indicative of the centrality of the mosque when it comes to territorial politics, identity discourse and formation as well as to the strategies of state and organisational control. For this reason the sociology of Islam and the sociology of Muslim immigration in France has also been explored. Faced with the necessity, if not the urgency of having a "community" representative with which it could deal with, the French Republic reactivated its colonial reflexes by deciding to make a break with the supposed "untouchable" law of 9 December 1905 regarding laïcité by creating a representative Muslim body in France (CFCM). The development of a specifically French Islam, now institutionalised, has led to an increasing demand for places of worship including the construction of so called 'Cathedral-Mosques'. These represent a visibility which often comes into conflict with local concerns. This element is also addressed

Abstract:
This study investigates the potential savings in air conditioning energy and reductions in atmospheric pollutants in existing air conditioned mosques in Saudi Arabia. It aims to study in particular the improvements of passive cooling systems in existing mosques under three main headings of (1) the determination of (a) passive cooling systems' demand improvements and (b) the proposed measures for improvements, (2) their relative performances, and (3) their applications. Existing air conditioned mosques in city of Jeddah form the primary subject of this study, by surveying 48 existing air conditioned mosques' envelope, shading and night ventilation. Based on a better understanding of these passive cooling systems, combined with an analysis of the current economical, structural and constructional situations within existing air conditioned mosques, a coherent set of improvement measures have been proposed namely; (1) increase insulation values of mosques' fabric by adding various building and insulation materials for walls and roof, (2) increase shading by complete shading of windows and (3) increased night ventilation by ventilating the mosque for the whole night. A passive cooling evaluation method, appropriate to the measures defined, has been adapted to predict the potential savings in air conditioning energy, money and atmospheric pollutants. This manual method has been used to predict the various savings that can be achieved by applying these measures of improvements to nine case study mosques. A set of comprehensive tables showing the potential sayings in air conditioning energy, money and atmospheric pollutants emissions when applying these proposed measures for improving passive cooling systems in existing air conditioned mosques are produced. These tables can be used by the architects, by the mosques' management and by the Ministry of Awkaf (Endowment) who are responsible for mosque procurement and maintenance. Finally, the study has estimated the potential savings of these measures when applied to all existing air conditioned mosques in Jeddah and shown their relative contributions to reducing the national energy consumption and atmospheric pollutants emissions levels.

Abstract:

Social phobia is a disabling, lifelong disorder characterised by fear in social settings.

The aim of the present study was to gain more knowledge about diagnostic, neurobiologic and epidemiologic aspects of social phobia.

Thirty-two individuals were assessed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I and II psychiatric disorders, the Karolinska Scales of Personality and the Temperament and Character Inventory. Social phobia was accompanied by concurrent axis I disorders in about 28% of individuals, lifetime axis I disorders in 54%, personality disorders in 60%, and avoidant personality disorder (APD) in 47%. This suggests that there is a high comorbidity between social phobia and APD according to the DSM-IV criteria. The personality profiles associated with social phobia were dominated by anxiety-related traits that were primarily related to social phobia itself and not to the presence of concurrent personality disorders.

Eighteen subjects with social phobia and eighteen controls were investigated with positron emission tomography and the radiolabeled serotonin precursor, [3 -11C]–5-HTP (5-HTP). Individuals with social phobia demonstrated proportionally lower regional relative whole brain accumulation of 5-HTP in areas of the frontal and temporal cortices as well as the striatum, but higher accumulation in the cerebellum. This suggests that there are imbalances in presynaptic serotonin function in individuals with social phobia, although this could only be confirmed in men, and not in women.

By means of a postal survey, distributed to 2000 randomly selected individuals, social phobia in Sweden was found to be common, with a point prevalence of 15.6%.

Abstract:
The large mosque of Paris was built in 1926, that of Mantes-La-Jolie, second mosque of France equiped with a minaret, was built in 1981. Since then, a dozen "visible" mosques have been set up, with or without minarets. The majority of the places of Moslem worship of which the number varies between 1500 and 1700 is represented by rooms of prayer installed under precarious conditions. Their exit of clandestinity as from the years 1980 raises the question of their architectural identification and their urban location according to their situation in a traditional urban fabric (ex: Paris) or in a peripheral district (suburbs). The opposition between the national policies and the local policies lets emerge an obvious dissension around a clear definition of secularity and the possibilities of funding the construction of the places of worship. In addition, the numerous difficulties which accompany the processes of "possible" realization by the places of Moslem worship that the latter are ascribed to the local policies. The instruction of the file of permit building of a mosque can last several decades. This wait-and-see policy of the administrative type is charged to the disunion of the Moslems, to the importance of the requests as regards places of worship and to the hostility of the residents and the authorities. The representations which accompany the public discussion on insertion by the mosques, related to the ignorance of the right by the local Moslems and public decision makers, generate qualified situations of "no-right"

Abstract:
Social factors have long been included in theories that aim at explaining educational inequality, for example social integration or social influence from significant others. Using social network data from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries (CILS4EU), I am investigating to what extent social aspects can contribute to our understanding of ethnic and gendered patterns in educational inequality. The first two empirical chapters focus on explaining ethnic patterns in school grades and in the aspirations to attend university. In these, I find a positive relationship between low school grades and extent of social exclusion, measured through the absence of friendships and the existence of social rejection from classmates. This helps explaining ethnic grade disadvantages of recently arrived migrants, since they are more likely to be socially excluded. Further, I use friendship network data to detect social clusters within school classes, and find that changes in cluster members' aspirations are relatively more important for changes in individual aspirations than the corresponding changes of classmates outside of the social cluster. These chapters use an ego-centric network approach, i.e. they utilise social network data to capture characteristics of the social dimension around individuals and analyse them in regression models on the individual level. The latter two empirical chapters investigate how social influence can stabilise gendered patterns of favourite subjects and competence beliefs. Examining why girls get discouraged from subjects in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM), I find evidence for influence from friends on favourite subjects, as well as for the tendency of girls to be affected by the preferences of other girls in the classroom specifically when it comes to preferences for STEM subjects. Moreover, I show that there is a social influence from friends on maths competence beliefs, especially for boys, while girls tend to be more influenced by maths grades. These two chapters take a socio-centric approach, i.e. they deploy complete network analysis to detect patterns of social influence, while accounting for network structures and processes. This thesis shows that social aspects can contribute valuable insights into the study of educational choice and attainment. In identifying concrete social mechanisms surrounding and affecting individuals, this approach can thus help us understand how differences in educational outcomes come about.

Abstract:
The field of industrial ecology aims to transform industry into cyclical systems so that the “waste of one process can be used as resource for another process” (Frosch and Galloupoulos, 1989). Within this field, Industrial Symbiosis (IS) has emerged as a set of exchange structures to advance to a more eco-efficient industrial system, by establishing inter-organisational networks of waste material and energy exchanges. Even though the area has attracted much academic attention and has been reported to lead to economic and environmental benefits (Chertow and Lombardi, 2005), initially, most of the contributions focused on the engineering and technical feasibility of the exchanges, whereas social elements remained mostly unaddressed. Although relevant literature has partly addressed this gap and recognized the role played by social aspects, there is still little understanding of how social mechanisms work; how they affect the emergence and operation of IS networks and, most importantly, there is a lack of comprehensive frameworks for the analysis of the soft elements of IS. This research has been designed to contribute to these areas, by exploring the social aspects surrounding IS networks and providing a framework for their analysis. The framework provided covers the material, social and discursive dimensions of IS networks and focus on the dynamic analysis of the interaction between them. The research design relies on the cross-comparison of a number of IS networks: Kalundborg (Denmark), Sagunto (Spain) and NISP (UK). Social Network Analysis and Discourse Analysis have been used as main methodological approaches. Findings of the research cover two key areas: 1) the formulation of a comprehensive analytical framework that addresses the social dimension of IS initiatives in a systematic and integrative way and 2) empirical learning on the main social processes affecting the operation of IS networks.
