Abstract:
Reading comprehension tests are often assumed to measure the same, or at least similar, constructs. Yet, reading is not a single but a multidimensional form of processing, which means that variations in terms of reading material and item design may emphasize one aspect of the construct at the cost of another. The educational systems in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden share a number of traits, and in the recent decade, the development of national test instruments, especially for reading, has been highly influenced by international surveys of student achievement. In this study, national tests of L1 reading comprehension in secondary school in the three Scandinavian countries are compared in order to reveal the present range of diversity/commonality within the three test domains. The analysis employs both qualitative and quantitative aspects of data, including frameworks, text samples, task samples, and scoring guidelines from 2011 to 2014. Findings indicate that the three tests differ substantially from each other, not only in terms of the intentional and operative constructs of reading to be measured, but also in terms of testing methods and stability over time. Implications for the future development of reading comprehension assessment are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract Purpose: This case study describes the use of the paraphrasing strategy with cause-and-effect (C/E) relations as a technique to improve a 14-year-old high school student's reading comprehension of social studies text in both his native (Spanish) and second language (English). Method: The student used expository texts from state textbook adoption materials. Instruction was based on scaffolded dialogue that cued the student to attend to and paraphrase various aspects of the C/E concept. Results: Despite the fact that the student began with texts at reading levels 5 and 6 years below his actual grade level, the comprehension of C/E relations in history text was a challenge. Several factors contributed to the complexity of the task for the student. By the final phase of intervention, he was successfully paraphrasing with texts that were 3 and 4 years above the baseline reading grade levels. Implications: The salient points from this study that may be useful for educators or speech language pathologists are: a description of the difficulties that interfered with the student's comprehension and the thought processes he used, types of cues used to teach C/E relations, and evidence of the student's development of paraphrases and comprehension.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the youthful lyrics of Zuzanna Ginczanka (1917–1944), a Polish poet of Jewish descent and a victim of the Holocaust. She was brought up in Rivnne in Volyn, in the atmopshere of social, moral and artistic changes in the 1920 s. The young poet touched upon various aspects of modernity in her earliest literary works written for the secondary-school magazine „Echo School”. Her work is a defense of the youthful lyric as a form adequately expressing emotions and identity. It is also a defense of biography, an important source of literary creation and a context of reading.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the type of content disseminated by school libraries through social media and what topics are the most commonly used, to discover if, in addition to topics concerning libraries, information with a wide social scope is also disseminated. Design/methodology/approach This paper reviews the use of social media as well as the implementation of a content analysis on the most used 2.0 platforms, to locate which content is the most relevant in the school libraries of public secondary schools in Extremadura. Findings In the Extremadura region of Spain, the results of the 752 publications posted during the period 2014-2017 by the libraries of the 86 public secondary schools on six selected social media platforms generated a total of 4 categories and 14 subcategories, and point to a predominance of topics related to encouraging and promoting reading and writing, and to the library’s support function for both the classroom and the school. However, shortcomings are detected in content related to social aspects of special interest, such as bullying or education in equality. Originality/value The originality of this paper lies in the fact that although there are some works on the analysis of the content of the social web of libraries in general, especially university libraries, the same does not apply to the evaluation of social media in school libraries, and much less about the analysis of social media content in these types of libraries.

Abstract:
This contribution evaluated aspects, such as the frequency of reading, formats, and reading preferences, of secondary school students from Poland, Chile, and Portugal. For this, we started with the data obtained from a questionnaire on reading interests and frequencies, answered by 491 schoolchildren from the referred countries (175 Poles, 178 Chileans, and 138 Portuguese), on which a contrastive analysis was carried out with the aim of observing whether the strategies for promoting and consolidating reading habits should follow similar or divergent guidelines in each of the contexts. The comparison of the results indicates low reading frequencies are common to all the countries of the study, highlighting the lack of interest in reading periodicals (newspapers and magazines) and comics, although in leisure time (particularly on holidays) respondents show a greater interest in reading. Their preferences are oriented toward the adventure genre, which is followed by books on romantic themes, science fiction, mystery, terror, and humor. As for specific works and authors, we found a very heterogeneous and diverse panorama for each country. They show, in general terms, a penchant for paper in relation to reading support (e-books, in particular, are not particularly appreciated); however, a large contingent of schoolchildren are indifferent to the format. Digital reading is largely dominant in social networks. The analysis of the results reveals an important confluence in the three contexts analyzed, pointing in general to a low frequency and motivation toward reading, which is why common strategies are proposed to enhance the reading habits of Polish, Chilean, and Portuguese schoolchildren.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: This study attempts to explore the multiple aspects of feminist perspectives in milk and honey by Rupi Kaur. Methodology: This study is description through analysis. Gaze theory, concepts like ‘écriture féminine’ and objectification are applied as a medium of the theoretical framework. Secondary sources are used for analyzing the chosen topic. Main findings: The study shows that the poetry of Kaur (n.d.) in milk and honey amalgamates multiple aspects of feminism. Although a reading of feminist ideologies in literary works is not a new research area, yet the merger of many issues of feminism in the same collection of poetry is quite impressive. Social implications/Applications: The study contributes towards being familiar with the movements of feminism in the digital age. It highlights how the feminist perspective in the digital age has pioneered a unique way of presentation. The novelty of the study: The novelty of the study lies in the way it reconnoiters the various feminist thoughts intertwined together in the poems of the same collection.

Abstract:
The purpose of this seven-month study is to closely examine the pre-school children’s activity which represents the stepping stone of reading interest as the fundamental aspect of literacy. The subject chosen were 38 students of two Prekindergarten–Kindergarten in Landungsari village, a citified area of Malang city, East Java Province, Indonesia. Doing initial survey, holding structured interview, reinvigorating the existing facilities, and networking with the local social units were the integrated approach done to intensify the study performed. Furthermore, the role of family and volunteers whose attention was dedicated to children development was also observed to find out their support in nurturing children to love reading. Aside from pilot data and primary data, secondary data from the local government recording the people’s education within the environment of the observed subjects were used as references to the prevalent reading culture. The result of the research disclosed that 28 and 15 children attending the two Prekindergarten–Kindergartens exposed their self-development through creativity based on their imagination after listening to the selected storytelling materials. Additionally, building visual communication and increasing numeric vocabularies were crucial indicators of the research subjects to love reading. The rise of this reading interest, nevertheless, cannot be detached from the collaboration between teachers or guides of the pre-schoolers and the individuals who are committed to the education of early age children; not to mention a conducive atmosphere and supporting programs from both formal and informal institutions. PurposeThis theory-into-practice article centers on American history through the optics of one religious organization's contestations – the Elim Springs Church of Jesus Christ, or Harshmanites as they are commonly known – with state and society. Secondary students explore the history and myriad responses from citizens and the federal government, which provides insight into what it means to be an American.Design/methodology/approachEmbedded action inquiry (EAI) couples investigation with informed action. This whole-class exploration of 19th and 20th century American history transforms into individual, independent inquiries about related historical and current civil liberty contestations. Students communicate newly generated, fully substantiated understandings first to an academic audience and then to the community.FindingsTeachers direct students' historical reading, thinking and writing toward informed civic participation. Engaging primary and secondary sources spark students' curiosity and scrutiny; writing prompts and scaffolding guide students' text-based articulations.Originality/valueHarshmanite history, initiated by an iconic leader and maintained by the congregation into its 3rd century, illuminates the best and worst aspects of America. Secondary social studies students can examine emergent, local tensions when citizens' religious freedoms confront civic duty and societal responses. Through EAI, a novel adaptation of inquiry, students make meaning out of the local history and contribute to civic dialogue.

Abstract:
This study attempted to explore the process of word formation and its social function of slang words on Rich Brian's official music video, precisely in the comment section of the newest song of him, D.O.A that released on 25 August 2020. This study employed discourse and sociolinguistics aspects; hence, this study's research design was a descriptive qualitative. Additionally, this study's object was a one-month comment section of Rich Brian's newest song official music video. Furthermore, there were two sources of data, primary and secondary data sources. The primary data were a comment section of Rich Brian's newest official song music video, while the secondary source was from available works of literature and urban dictionary. Therefore, to collect the data, this study did the documentation from the D.O.A. official music video from one-month duration comments. As the data obtained, there were 49 slang words found. Then, they were analyzed through Yule (2010)s theory as the basis of word formation process standard, while Zhou & Fan (2013)s theory was used as the basis of word formation function standard. Data analysis is divided into several steps: reading, collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The result showed that derivation was the highest frequency of the word-formation process. It was 22%, the acronym was 18%, coinage was 16%, the conversion was 14%, blending was 12%, compounding was 8%, clipping was 6%, borrowing and multiple processes were 2% of each. Besides, the highest social function was to express emotive feeling with 49 % quantity of the frequency. The second higher was to pursue self-identity, achieving politeness was 8%. This study suggested a more in-depth analysis of non-standard languages, such as swear words or taboo words and emoticon that can be done through a social semiotic approach.

Brewer, Robert Lee. "The effect on comprehension of teaching selected vocabulary prior to reading an eleventh grade social studies passage." Virtual Press, 1985. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/435170.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted to determine the affect on comprehension of teaching selected key vocabulary words prior to reading an eleventh grade social studies passage. Four hypotheses were stated and the .05 level of confidence was used as the criterion for acceptance or rejection.Data for the study were collected from 143 students in six eleventh grade social studies classes. All students in the study were asked to read the same social studies passage. Students in the treatment group were given vocabulary instruction; students in the control group were given no vocabulary instruction. Upon completion of the reading assignment all students were asked to answer sixteen multiple choice questions. The questions were classified as vocabulary specific and general. The sum of the means for specific and general questions and the difference between the means of specific and general questions were calculated in order to determine if differences between the treatment group and control group could be attributed to the question type. A multivariate and a univariate analysis were applied to the data collected for the study.Hypothesis 1, which stated that there is no significant difference between the comprehension scores of the social studies class which receives vocabulary instruction and the social studies class which receives no instruction, was rejected. Vocabulary instruction improved scores for students in the treatment group. Hypothesis 2 which stated that there is no significant mean difference among the gains in comprehension scores of the social studies students classified as high, medium, or low was accepted. There was no significant difference in the gains in comprehension for students of varying vocabulary development. Hypothesis 3, which stated that there is no significant mean difference between the number of correctly answered vocabulary specific questions and the number of correctly answered general questions, was rejected. Students scored higher on the vocabulary specific questions. Hypothesis 4 which stated that there is no significant mean difference between the comprehension scores of the male and female social studies students was accepted. The vocabulary instruction did not result in a significant difference in comprehension between male and female subjects.

Abstract:
This dissertation draws from and contributes to many traditions within the (interdisciplinary) discipline of communication studies. Serving the two primary objectives of the examination of the figure of the BMX freestyle cycling Pro and the analysis of the role of the magazines within this particular culture or field in the construction and maintenance of this figure, this project brings together studies of cultural intermediaries, magazine history, advertising history and theory, subcultures, audiences, commodification, cultural industries, celebrity, stars and professional athletes. The culture of BMX freestyle cycling is an interesting and heretofore unexamined phenomenon, and a focused examination allows the exploration and investigation of larger questions within the discipline. As such, this dissertation provides an informed interpretation of the culture of BMX freestyle, allows the examination of a number of other issues concerning the mediation of cultural practices, and suggests a theory of the special-interest magazine, thus contributing substantively to various literatures.
Special-interest magazines are a part of a larger system and industries within which the ultimate goal is the sale of commodities. At the same time, they function as a site of credibility within a larger field, both conferring star status on particular individuals and approving particular commodities that are being offered to the readers. Special-interest magazines construct and sell audiences to advertisers, create star systems, propose candidates for stardom, help build image careers, contribute substantially to a "star currency" within the particular field, negotiate (i.e.; mediate) tensions between the advertisers, the stars, and the readers, help organize the time of a culture and work to infuse it with a sense of vitality through the punctual and ritualistic appearance of novel content, assist the consumer with their desires for commodities and stars by standing as catalogues of commodities (serving to educate newcomers in the protocol of the culture), provide new financial opportunities (such as the commodity form of the photo contingency), and in their complicity with the needs of those that provide their primary source of revenue, give more value to the advertising dollar in the construction of editorial content that could be seen as advertising.

Stonehouse, J. M. "Relating to reading : a psychosocial exploration of the experiences of young people who find reading difficult." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/23525/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although research studies are plentiful regarding the cognitive aspects of children’s and young people’s reading difficulties, surprisingly few consider the emotional or relational impact of those difficulties. Those which do rarely invite young people to share their experiences of struggling to master this fundamental life skill. This exploratory, qualitative study used a psychosocial methodology to explore the reading experiences of young people who find reading difficult. A psychosocial ontology and epistemology gave equal consideration to the meaning constructed through participants’ social interactions and the unconscious psychological processes at work for participant and researcher, and facilitated an understanding of the emotional experience of each participant. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two 12-year-old boys (UK school year 8) with persistent reading difficulties, using Free Association Narrative Interview (FANI) techniques. Each boy was interviewed twice, creating his own narrative in response to initial questions or prompts. The boys were also observed twice in a typical English lesson, using principles of infant observation. A reflective research diary was used to record the researcher’s personal responses to all aspects of the research. Interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. Reflective process notes from each observation provided an additional perspective on each boy’s experiences. Psychosocial research supervision enabled a reflexive stance to be maintained, holding in mind the ‘whole’ person, acknowledging the researcher as psychologically defended, and considering the relevance and appropriateness of themes as they emerged. Semantic and latent themes specific to each participant were identified. Although the aim was not to generalise between the boys’ experiences, similarities were found within the following areas: ‘(un)helpful helping’, ‘believed and understood?’, ‘lazy, dumb and stupid’, and ‘smarter sisters’. The findings provide a rich account of participants’ experiences as ‘struggling readers’. Strengths and limitations of the study are discussed, together with implications for teaching and Educational Psychology practice.

Woodward, Robert. "Teaching television literacy in South African secondary schools." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/18321.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 190-196.
This dissertation develops a syllabus for the study of television literacy in South African secondary schools. There are two natural divisions in the development of the thesis; the section which explores epistemological issues and the section which describes the strategic issues. The first section examines the nature of print literacy. This consists of four elements: mastering the basic language of the medium; being able to decode this language; using the medium for personal creative ends; and having the capacity for critical reflection. It is possible to talk in terms of a language of television and so this definition of literacy can be extended to television as well. There are three main areas for the study of television literacy. These are: the production techniques and effects of television; the conventional forms of the medium; and the nature of television as a mass medium. Once this has been established the dissertation explores the strategic issues of a methodology and areas of knowledge for teaching television literacy. Although there are many methodologies for the study of the mass media, the British Cultural Studies approach, together with Hall's three moments of encoding and decoding, seems to offer the methodology most suitable for teaching critical literacy. Within this theoretical framework it is possible to describe a syllabus for teaching television literacy. This syllabus involves studying the encoding and decoding of television messages within the context of the technical infrastructure of television; the internal and external relations of production, and the frameworks of knowledge which determine the form and content of television.

Abstract:
The Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) initiative for secondary schools was launched in England in 2007 as part of the Secondary National Strategy for School Improvement. Designed as a universal, whole-school approach for the development of key social and emotional skills, SEAL was expected to improve behaviour, attendance, attainment and the emotional health and well-being of all members of the school community (DfES, 2007a). Research studies examining the implementation of school-based interventions have revealed, however, that they are rarely implemented as intended by the programme developers (Berman and McLaughlin, 1976) and that this is likely to negatively impact upon the achievement of the expected outcomes (Durlak and DuPre, 2008). Implementation is typically variable between settings due to local adaptations or modifications (Blakely et al, 1987) and challenges to implementation at a range of levels, including programme, classroom and school (Greenberg et al, 2005).This longitudinal study examined the processes of implementation of SEAL in five case study schools in the north-west of England. The primary aims were to: (i) identify both positive and negative factors affecting implementation so that any necessary improvements to SEAL may be made prior to its broader dissemination; (ii) support future practitioners in the implementation of SEAL by highlighting effective strategies and potential challenges; (iii) expand understanding of the processes of implementation of school-based interventions in English educational contexts. Schools were visited five times during the first two years of the implementation of SEAL; lessons were observed, relevant documents reviewed and interviews conducted with a range of staff, pupils and Local Education Authority representatives. Data was analysed thematically using a combination of a priori and emergent themes. As anticipated, implementation was variable between schools; this was in the detail of implementation, however, and broader convergences were seen in the barriers presented and the non-implementation of key processes and elements. None of the schools were able to fully implement SEAL. Challenges to implementation were identified at all levels examined (programme, classroom and school) and included programme characteristics, staff resistance, insufficient training, lack of time and competing initiatives. The interaction of negative and positive factors both within and between levels suggested, however, that no one factor may be considered dominant. This study concluded that until programme level issues and shared contextual factors such as initiative overload are addressed, then the full implementation of SEAL in secondary schools is unlikely to be achieved.

Abstract:
AbstractThe spoor of animals and humans alike contain rich information about an individual and about a momentary activity this individual performed. If the – arguably hard-wired – human ability to read spoor and tracks is sufficiently trained, a footprint allows to glean from it various physical, kinetic, medical, social and psychologic data about an individual, as has been observed among various populations across the globe. The Ju|’hoansi San from northern Namibia still today practice traditional hunting so that tracking is a skill that is required and trained on a daily base. For a good tracker, the information she or he gets from spoor is equally rich on animal and human footprints, and it is not necessary that the tracker has been exposed before to the individual whose spoor she/he reads. In order to allow an assessment of how tenable are the interpretations by contemporary hunter-gatherers of prehistoric human footprints, this chapter elucidates methodological aspects of tracking and situates this ability in an epistemological framework.

Abstract This chapter presents the social tourism programmes for seniors in Slovenia by focusing on three aspects: (i) What programmes, identifiable within the framework of social tourism, exist in Slovenia? (ii) What adjustments do they include to enable seniors to take part? And (iii) what are the benefits of such programmes? The programmes were analysed in two ways: (i) through the analysis of secondary sources, i.e. review of programme webpages and various data provided by programme organizers in the form of reports; and (ii) through a qualitative survey of key stakeholders in the field of social tourism for seniors. The chapter concludes by presenting perspectives for the future development of social tourism for seniors in Slovenia.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the main areas of engagement of the state of Senegal with its diaspora. In the first part, it looks at the main institutions and policies geared towards the diaspora. In the second part, the chapter focuses specifically on diaspora policies in the area of social protection (unemployment, health care, family benefits, pensions, guaranteed minimum resources). If Senegal falls in the category of pioneer countries for some aspects of emigration policies (ministerial institutions, external voting, political representation), its policy for the diaspora in the field of social protection is rather scanty. As a developing country facing many structural economic issues, scaling up social protection in the homeland remains the top priority for the Government, relegating social protection for the diaspora as a secondary policy concern for now. Recent governmental policies towards the diaspora have focused primarily on tapping the resources of the diaspora in order to increase its contribution to economic development and facilitate productive investment by Senegalese abroad in their home country.

Abstract:
This work will try to follow the development of the iconography of Blessed Giovanni Colombini from the first images handed down to us throughout the XV century. By reading the hagiographic sources, we will try to go back to when the choice of the Jesuati habit started and whether this remains unchanged over the years. The iconographic evidences will be of help to this end. The change in Colombini's social status led him to a radical change in his clothing, which, for some aspects, is very close to that of penitents. We will also try to understand what influence the decision (made towards the mid-XIV century) of Pope Urban V had on the Jesuati habit and therefore on the iconography of Giovanni Colombini, as regards the dress of the ‘povari di Christo’.

Abstract:
The study geared to develop a causal model for the psychosocial attributes of the learning environment on Grade 10 students' science performance in secondary schools divisions of Region X, Northern Mindanao. This study utilized descriptive correlational and causal-comparative research design. A random sample of 1,123 Grade 10 students was utilized in this study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Correlation, Regression, and Path Analyses. The results revealed that students' performance in Science was found out of low mastery level. In terms of psychosocial aspects, the students generally practiced their science activities in both laboratory and classroom environments, possessed moderate confidence in their emotion and self-efficacy in chemistry, having average science process skills, and were mentored by science teachers with very satisfactory teaching ability. Classroom environment and teacher ability were the psychosocial aspects that significantly correlated with performance. The best-fitting causal model on students' performance is anchored on the classroom environment, supported by teachers' qualifications. A classroom learning environment that is highly conducive can stimulate students' interest to enhance their science learning. It is highly recommended that administrators and policymakers revisit curricular activities, particularly on students' classroom learning environment in the teaching-learning process. Keywords: academic performance, a causal model, and psychosocial aspects of the learning environment

Abstract:
The Slovak Republic as a member of the United Nations agreed to contribute to the fulfilment of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) defined in the document Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Despite the efforts at the national level, the actual implementation of national priorities, derived from SDGs, at local level is lacking a systematic approach. When it comes to the territorial development, however, Slovakia has recognized the potential of social economy and social enterprises in particular. Concrete steps were taken to stimulate occurrence of this phenomenon especially in the lagging behind regions. The attempt to intersect these two aspects represents the main objective of the presented paper together with an answer to the research question – to what extent can social enterprises be considered as a tool for SDGs’ implementation in Slovakia. Through an extensive work with scientific and grey literature and through the analytical lenses when processing secondary data from the Registry of Social Enterprises of Slovakia, we identified numerous linkages between the reality of social enterprises and their contribution to the SDGs mainly in the area of poverty reduction and inclusion, education, job market, circular economy, usage of local resources and environmental protection.

Abstract:
"The period of approving the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq for the year 2005 was surrounded by a state of political turmoil that usually accompanies any transitional phase that carries many political variables through the transition from a phase of dictatorial rule to a new phase bearing the features of democracy. In its approval, the lack of clarity in the political vision and the weakness of the constitutional legal culture of its authors, as well as the way in which it was approved by a popular referendum, which is voted on by yes or no, and does not allow an opportunity to discuss its articles and articles and diagnose its shortcomings. One of the shortcomings in our constitution is that it does not refer to regulating the resignation of the Prime Minister. This position has a political nature, and an administrative nature, and its occupant has the right to decide not to continue with this position and be satisfied with working in this field for any reason, and this must be in accordance with the context Organized legal, which is known as resignation., and this is what we dealt with in this research. For the purpose of researching this topic, we asked a research question that is... How can we address the legislative shortcomings that surrounded the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq for the year 2005 and related to regulating the resignation of the Prime Minister? From this research question, we derived several secondary research questions... 1- What is the limitation of legislative shortcomings? 2- What are the reasons for the legislative deficiencies in the Iraqi constitution? 3- Does the Prime Minister have the right to resign during his tenure? 4- To whom is the resignation submitted? 5- Who is the party that decides whether or not to accept the resignation? 6- What are the procedures that follow the acceptance of the resignation? By discussing these questions, we will try to reach the possibility of developing a legislative text that deals with a complete organization of the resignation of the Prime Minister, especially since the idea of amending the constitution and to this day is still valid and possible, because many political, social and economic conditions in the country have changed from the time of entry into force of this constitution, which makes the idea of the amendment obligatory and necessary"

Abstract:
Global and national education agendas are concerned with improving quality and equality of learning outcomes. This paper provides an analysis of the case of Vietnam, which is regarded as having high learning outcomes and less inequality in learning. But national data and international test outcomes may mask the hidden inequalities that exist between minoritized groups and majority (Kinh) students. Drawing on data from qualitative videos and interviews of secondary teachers across 10 provinces, we examine the role of teachers’ beliefs, curricular design and actions in the classroom (Gale et al., 2017). We show that teachers hold different beliefs and engage in curricular design – or the use of hegemonic curriculum and instructional practices that produce different learning outcomes for minoritized students compared to Kinh students. It suggests that policies need to focus on the social-cultural aspects of teaching in addition to the material and technical aspects.
