Abstract:
Sociological research during the interwar period was meant to be a way through which the country could be known better, in other words, to make the Romanian realities better known, especially through monographic research, initiated by sociologist D. Gusti, considered to be the starting point of the Romanian Sociological School. After the achievement of the national ideal through the Great Union of 1918, a new ideal was necessary, that could complete the former. The nation was in the process of finding itself. The social problems of the country would be understood by knowing the country. All the enthusiastic forces were called forth to help to raise awareness of the nation, which were to become part of the monographic research teams: school teachers, priests, secondary teachers and professors, doctors, agronomists, mayors and praetors, members of the community centres, and even “the superior religious and civil rulers of the Nation, cultivating an Ethics and a Politics of Truth.” This study presents some aspects of the activity of the Community Centres in the rural area, the presence of the Royal Student Teams and the compulsoriness of the Social Service in the villages.

Abstract:
The present text analyzes some cultural aspects of the master-disciple relationship between Dimitrie Gusti and Mircea Vulcănescu. Insist especially on the topicality of Gustian sociology while taking Mircea Vulcănescu’s receiver. Mircea Vulcănescu’s discipleship starts with the coordination of the bachelor’s degree in sociology by Professor Dimitrie Gusti, and then continues with the writing of other studies. Participation in sociological campaigns field, seminars and sociology conferences will follow afterwards. The present study also has the interpretation that the disciple Mircea Vulcănescu gives to the sociological system of the declared teacher Dimitrie Gusti. The precise references are to the Aristotelian substrate of the relation between possibility and actuality, reflected by Dimitrie Gusti in the relation between cadres and manifestations; to the social will understood as an original expression of the voluntarism of Jean-Jacques Rousseau; to the archetypal character of the four Gustavian cadres; to Gusti’s sociological system defined as “system of social philosophy”. In this sense, Dimitrie Gusti’s system does not exclude science. On the contrary, it includes it in the sense of “sufficient reason” of all those existing in social life. Finally, I illustrated the importance of the social phenomenology practiced by Mircea Vulcănescu in the field sociological campaigns coordinated by Dimitrie Gusti with two classic examples and one current one. The first two refer to the analysis of a magico-religious phenomenon (the enchantment) and to the subtleties of the speculative vocation of the Romanian reflected linguistically. The present example is an attempt, partially original, to interpret in the spirit of the phenomenology proposed by Vulcănescu certain forms of popular culture that illustrate the non-canonical power of evil in Romanian history. At the limit, these fantasies of the efficacy of evil could more deeply explain the suspicion and distrust of Romanians.

Abstract:
This article explores how young women use social media to experience premarital romances in Mardin, a medium-sized town in southeast Turkey. It argues that love stories mediated by social media are integral to the enactment of a gendered moral self. The ethnographic data presented here indeed highlight how premarital romances and Muslim morality are not two contradictory and opposing ideals, but rather two constitutive aspects of the same mediated practices. Secrecy, lack of physical co-presence and the performance of a virtuous self in public and semi-public online spaces are common elements of the new romances. Yet social norms ruling the use of the online platforms to start and live premarital relationships are not shared by everybody, and different understandings of religion, morality and modernity have generated different and contrasting expectations. The article aims to contribute not only to the study of the effects of social media on interpersonal relations, but also to the understanding of how, in Muslim societies, moral norms are entangled with everyday practices mediated by digital media.

Abstract:
Background and aims. This survey evaluated the psycho-social impact of oral health on the quality of life in Romanian teenage and young adult orthodontic patients.Methods. Of the 300 standard questionnaires distributed in four dental offices, 125 questionnaires were returned. Each questionnaire contained 110 items, focusing on aspects like patients’ satisfaction, self-confidence, school/work performances and aesthetic concern, in relation to oral health. The patients were 16–25 years of age and all were undergoing or had undergone orthodontic treatment in the previous two years. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science software (SPSS), version 19.0.Results. 57.90% of the orthodontic patients participating in this study were happy about their dental status, 56.52% declared themselves not shy because of their oral health issues, 52.33% considered themselves as attractive to other people, and 57.29% replied (awarding a score between 8 and 10) that they were confident when smiling. Regarding self-confidence and school/work performances, 58% of the participants declared they avoided speaking in public because of the aspect of their teeth and 47.42% considered that their school/work performances during the fix appliance therapy stayed the same as before appliance. Nevertheless, the self-perceived facial aspect improved during orthodontic treatment (64.74% of replies had scores between 8 and 10 during the treatment versus 24.67% before the treatment). Several correlations were found between aspects such as psycho-social and functional variables, physical self-evaluation, and oral health issues.Conclusion. Patients’ satisfaction was improved during and after appliance therapy, for more than half of the participants. Self-confidence was low in relation to school/work performances; almost half of the patients reported stagnation in their school/work performances during the fix appliance therapy. However, more than 64% of the patients participating in this study were quite satisfied about their facial aspect during and after the orthodontic treatment. Thus, the common concerns of the patients anxious about their aspect during appliance therapy are not supported by the findings of this study.

Abstract:
Abstract In the present context, defined by a variety of social changes, social advancement is a key point that needs to be sheltered and ensured both in Romania as well as at the level of the European Union, in order to have a coherent European space, to reach and maintain a high level of social and economic welfare. The improvement of the social domain can be triggered by using the principles of the European Social Model, which incorporates values and institutions specially established to protect the integrity of people who are socially disadvantaged. Thus, the paper aims, on one hand, to analyze literature review aspects of the European Social Model as being a social development one and to identify the criteria according to which progress is established in relationship with this model. On the other hand, another goal of the paper is to make a comparative analysis between Romania's performance in the context of Central and Eastern European countries' situation. The purpose of the analysis is to diagnose the progress recorded and the social area in which it took place, as well as the differences between countries. The focus of the analysis will be placed on poverty and social exclusion, as dimensions of the European Social Model. The methodology that will help in undertaking the research comprises two elements: literature review and document analysis. The literature review component involves pinpointing information obtained from scientific articles about the European Social Model and aspects associated with it, available in online databases. The second part of the methodology refers to document analysis, which supposes the assessment of reports issued by organizations that provide such statistical data (Eurostat, World Bank, Social Progress Imperative).

Abstract:
The article proposes a survey of the Romanian context with regard to the translation profession, especially with reference to directions of development after 2007, i.e., the year of Romania’s accession to the EU. The research focuses on the configuration of the Romanian translation market and community in order to understand how the combination of international integration, academic efforts and involvement of professionals have made it possible to generate in a relatively short time a genuine marketplace and one that is rapidly making its mark on the European and international levels. The key questions are related to the level of awareness of the general population and academic institutions regarding translation market issues, the degree of recognition of language professions on a social and economic level and the extent to which professionalization has taken place to include a collective professional conscience. To these aims the following aspects will be reviewed: the underlying principles that build up the current context for translation in Romania, the developments in training, market practices and the relation to the European profession and academic environment.

Abstract:
This paper attempts to give a broad picture about the social distribution of the use of the internet, in its first part referring to international aspects, then giving a more detailed account of Romanian peculiarities. The author – Katalin Ravasz – is a sociologist and works with the Institute of Research Programs, Kolozsvár. According to comparative data, the price of a home internet connection is quite high in Romania, but we also have to consider that the label „too expensive" arises through social construction in a given context. That is, the perception „too expensive" doesn't form an absolute category, but is strongly subjective and socially determined. It is also probable that a reference to material causes could hide other kinds of lacks. The high rate of answers referring to material causes indicates the necessity of an analysis from the perspective of material status

Full text
Abstract:
Grounded in a theoretical debate between anthropological studies on Roma/Gypsies and anthropological studies of Christianity, the focus of this thesis is on the experience of social and religious life among members of a traditional minority in Finland, the Finnish Kaale/Finnish Roma, a population of approximately 13.000 people living in Finland and Sweden. Over the past decades, the processes of urbanisation and sedentarisation have led to shifts in the ways in which the social lives of Kaale families are lived. A shift towards individualisation is interlinked with the continuous importance placed on family and kin belonging, which come together in a re-assessment of people's central attachments in the world. At the same time, over the same period of time, a large number of this population have converted to Pentecostal and charismatic movements in the country, leading to subtle changes in the shape of social relations within and outside their own community: between believers and non-believers, between Kaale and non-Kaale. Making use of participant observation, interviews, conversion stories and individual life histories among Finnish Kaale living in the capital city of Helsinki and in Eastern parts of the country, this ethnography provides an insight into the multiple, overlapping and complex ways in which Kaale belonging is understood and into the ways in which Pentecostal religious life takes shape among born-again Kaale. Furthermore, looking specifically at the practice of Evangelism and missionary work, which defines the life of Pentecostal Kaale believers, the role of faith as an enhanced engagement with the world is analysed. A conversation therefore emerges also on the role of Pentecostal belonging in mobilising believers in relation to the world around them and, more specifically, on the way in which Pentecostal faith provides an avenue for a further social engagement and social mobilisation of individual Kaale believers.

Abstract:
This study reveals the main ludic structures found in the novels of Machado de Assis and describes the imaginative modes of representation of playfulness constructed by the novelist. In the authors prose, the sociability of the depicted historical matters is exposed in fictional situations that require an integrative interpretation one that takes into account his playful point of view. The ludic structure in Machados fiction sometimes involves a scenic object and sometimes functions as a metaphor of social relations. Furthermore, the game can boost interaction among several fictional instances of production and reception. The term game is understood here primarily as a vector of playfulness or, in other words, as a component capable of relating textual elements with game images metaphors which underpin the methods of writing invention. Thus, the proposed objective of this study is to contemplate the various strategies of fictionalization in Machados texts. Playful relations define the primary motivations of the characters, such as the game of seduction, the game of trickery, and the game of prediction. Further, they establish parameters for the text style, through literary devices such as parody, pastiche, quotation, charade, self-referencing, metaphor, typographic iconization, and the game between the narrator and reader. The reading of these play structures allows for the discovery of new interpretive paths. Thus, this study focuses on the playful fictional situations in Machados novels that contribute multiple levels of meaning to each narrative. The unfolding of these issues sheds light on formative traits of human beings and of the represented society, as one begins to appreciate the irony guiding the authors judgment in his rendering of the interaction between fictional writers, readers and storytellers.

Full text
Abstract:
The research addresses the relevant contradictions of European Roma inclusion policy-making. The situation which many Roma in European societies experience nowadays combines deprivation and exclusion on the grounds of civil and political recognition, cultural identity and minority rights, and socio-economic justice in (re-)distributing resources. The recent European call for specific Roma-targeted policies is also articulated in these three discourses of inclusion, whether these policies should be based on their distinctive ethnic identity to be emancipated, legally- and politically-defined citizenship to be enforced, or socio-economic precariousness to be improved. Each of these three discourses addresses different type of inequalities; sometimes they can complement each other in promoting substantial equality, whereas at other times one politics of inclusion can reinforce the existing inequalities of another type. These domains are closely connected with and burden one another reciprocally – in the sense that better solutions of the problems of one domain can increase the problems in another and well-intended policies can thus turn into new forms of exclusion. The research confirmed the uncertainty among international policy-makers regarding what should serve as a conceptual base for European Roma inclusion policies. It furthermore traced a lack of attempts to reconcile the identities of passive service recipients and those of actively claiming citizens. It also revealed that most of the policies are designed within patron-client relationship where the benefits of patrons exceed the benefits of activated Roma. Finally, it proposes to recalibrate inclusion policies towards accentuating socio-economic rights and concludes that integration through-and-to low-skilled job does not meet the objective of inclusion.

Constantinescu, Rãzvan Ungureanu. "Social mobility and educational attainment among Romanian Rroma." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2007. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:873446b4-d596-47ef-9ebc-698ae407cfa0.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic researches suggests that Rroma face challenges of overcoming poverty, improving access to education, increasing employability and improving health. This thesis describes a qualitative investigation into the role of education to ensuring upward mobility for Rroma. Using a purposive sample, the research analysed the ethnic make-up of Rroma individuals and found that contrary to uninformed perceptions, Rroma community is immensely diverse and can be described through two generic types: a Traditional Gypsies type and a Modern Rroma type. The Traditional Gypsies type would generally describe the Gypsies who at individual or collective level still preserve in their day to day life a collection of Gypsy ethnic practices. By contrast, the Modern Rroma type would refer to those Rroma who having began recently or generations back a process of ethnic transition and/or assimilation into the wider Romanian community now share only a few traditional ethnic practices. Next, the research classified occupations encountered, analysed whether intra-generational and inter-generational social mobility occurs and found that Rroma community experiences a dynamic pattern of multi-directional and multi-speed social mobility as well as a distinct process of ethnic transition. Ethnic transition describes the process through which respondents shed ethnic practices and move away from distinct Gypsy ethnic identities towards "symbolic" identities. Thirdly, the research analysed the impact of education on social trajectories and found that contrary to uninformed prejudice, a majority of Rroma tend to hold education in high esteem and that they do benefit socially from it. Far from questioning its relevance or fearing it, formal education is accepted and aspired to by Traditional Gypsies who understand its potential impact upon their living standard. Modem Rroma too, value education though their ideal attainment levels tend to be higher than those of Traditional Gypsies. The gap between abstract preferences and real school participation is maintained less by discrimination alone but by a rational choice evaluation through a cost (including discrimination) benefit analysis. Formal education is essential for Rroma's social mobility though Traditional Gypsies necessitate lesser levels than Modern Rroma who, to compete in the Gadje world, require the same amount of education for comparative occupation levels as other members of the wider community.

Graphic Novel is an adult contemporary comic, whose early important works emerged in the late 1970s, it is, in part, a continuation and a consequence of other earlier traditions, but is also the result of a phenomenon that occurred in the last thirty years into the awareness of adult comics as an art form. The works of the English author Rosemary Elizabeth Simmonds (Posy Simmonds) are representative of some of the main characteristics of graphic novels such as experimentation, high aesthetic quality and occupancy with current themes and issues. Posy uses nineteenth century’s literary classics and in accordance with the representations of a society saturated of images, develops a bold work, appropriating explicitly elements of literature and as part of the intertextual game, blending these elements with other ones, these are closer to the contemporary experience, and through a narrative, in which texts and drawings complement themselves, she uses them to illustrated a satirical portrait of the current British middle class. In his woks “Gemma Bovery” and “Tamara Drewe” Posy Simmonds explores this language with technical quality; experiments with the publishing format in a daily page of a long and completely story; discusses contemporary values covering the problematic of young English women through a canny and subtle satire, with a remarkable quality in her drawings; contributes to increase the graphic novels to be seen as a new art form, which, even having its influences and proximity to other areas, has become necessary to discuss it as a differentiated material: a genre with its own conventions

The works of the English author Rosemary Elizabeth Simmonds (Posy Simmonds) are representative of some of the main characteristics of graphic novels such as experimentation, high aesthetic quality and occupancy with current themes and issues. Posy uses nineteenth century's literary classics and in accordance with the representations of a society saturated of images, develops a bold work, appropriating explicitly elements of literature and as part of the intertextual game, blending these elements with other ones, these are closer to the contemporary experience, and through a narrative, in which texts and drawings complement themselves, she uses them to illustrated a satirical portrait of the current British middle class. In his woks "Gemma Bovery" and "Tamara Drewe" Posy Simmonds explores this language with technical quality; experiments with the publishing format in a daily page of a long and completely story; discusses contemporary values covering the problematic of young English women through a canny and subtle satire, with a remarkable quality in her drawings; contributes to increase the graphic novels to be seen as a new art form, which, even having its influences and proximity to other areas, has become necessary to discuss it as a differentiated material: a genre with its own conventions

Abstract:
There are many aspects that influence the importance of a university. Among these, web visibility is taking advantage of available technology, focusing on the benefits of internet and social media. This paper provides an analysis of the Romanian public and private universities websites, using alexa.com, a tool for website traffic analysis. Moreover, the official social media accounts of universities (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, YouTube and Instagram) were analysed, collecting several data such as: the number of likes and followers, the number of subscribers and the number of posts. The analysis was performed using ANOVA and Nonparametric Test for the presence via websites and Spearman and Pearson correlation to assess the correlation between social media and website traffic. In general, public universities from Romania have more visibility and a higher number of links to their websites compared to private ones. Based on the fact that Facebook and site content are often related, it should be noted that activity on Facebook may improve website rankings for Romanian universities.
