Fulton, Bruce. "Social Gatekeeping, the Serendipitous Tie and Discovery: Authors Connecting Readers to Books through Social Media Outreach." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/301549.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2011, over 1.5 million new book titles were published in the United States, a 400% increase in just five years compared to 2006. In the same time period, the market share for eBooks increased dramatically and now comprises 20% or more of sales from many of the biggest publishing companies. This hyper-abundance of titles in an increasingly heterogeneous market place has made it difficult for consumers to connect to books they might want to read. This is the discovery problem. It is compounded by the continuing decline of traditional gatekeepers and sources of discovery such as mass media reviews and advertising, as well as the decline of traditional bookstores where people often find books through browse. Authors and publishers therefore have turned to social media to spread the word about their titles. Social gatekeeping, an extension of traditional gatekeeping theory, is proposed as the framework for understanding how author participation in social networks initiates a flow of the diffusion of information over the web and other computer mediated communication channels, and through individuals and social networks to potential readers. Serendipitous browse and discovery is a key strategy for readers to find titles of interest, and the serendipitous tie is proposed as a social mechanism through which individuals discover new titles and bring it back to their social networks to share. To explore these concepts, a random sample of new eBook titles published during the first week of April, 2012 was generated and analyzed in three phases. The first phase of research classified books and authors according to facets such as traditional or self-published, use of social media and other factors. The second phase used multiple regression to establish an association between the use of social media by authors and a title's sales and presence on the Web. The third phase reviewed selected titles for new approaches to social media use and evidence of the serendipitous tie. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that author web presence predicts discoverability and sales.

Pooladian, Aida. "Altmetrics in Library and Information Science: coverage of sources and use of social media by authors." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/663024.

Abstract:
Altmetrics is a movement that aims to capture new and previously invisible types of impact of scholarly publications on social web platforms such as news sites, Wikipedia, blogs, microblogs, social bookmarking tools and online reference managers. This thesis aimtries to explore the suitability and reliability of two altmetrics resources: Mendeley, a social reference manager website, and Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia, written collaboratively by the people who use it. At present, Wikipedia is the largest online encyclopedia. The main objectives of this thesis are to explore the use of reference management software and Wikipedia to estimate the readership of academic literature and to compare the evolution in the coverage of LIS literature by altmetric sources and by citation indexes. To reach these objectives, three different studies were designed. The general method to achive toobtain the initial data set was to search is that we used the Social Sciences Citation Index to retrieve articles and reviews published and indexed in the category “Information Science & Library Science”. Each record was then searched in Mendeley to obtain the number of bookmarks of the paper and the academic status of the users. Additonally, we performed a fifteen-month longitudinal study of the evolution of bookmarks in Mendeley. Afterwards, we searched for each of these articles in Wikipedia, and retrieved all the entries in which they were cited. The Results results of these studies show that the correlation between bookmarks and citations was moderate and the overlap between the most frequently bookmarked and the most frequently cited papers increased over time. A significant share of the bookmarks were made by students and professionals, although the shares of bookmarks made by different categories of users changed as time went by. Reviews were bookmarked more frequently than articles, and papers in English had more bookmarks than papers in any other language. Also results reveal severe limitations in the use of Wikipedia citations for research evaluation. Lack of standardization and incompleteness of Wikipedia references make it difficult to retrieve them. The number of Wikipedia citations is very low, A significant number of references are cited in biographical entries about the authors of the articles, resulting in a phenomenon of accumulated advantage.

Abstract:
The aim of the following thesis is to examine if the ideology behind the copyright laws of today poses a threat to creativity and the cultural heritage. The organizations Association of American Publishers and Authors Guild are subject to an ideology- analysis which seeks to examine their ideological views on copyright and the possible threat to creativity such a view brings. The conflict between the two organizations and Google Book Search is used as a context where the ideology is being brought to light. Stanford Law School professor, Lawrence Lessigs work is used as theory and an alternative to the examined view on copyright. The result suggests that the organizations see copyright as the only effective incentive to creation and therefore they think stronger intellectual property laws are needed. They are also engaging in the process of equalising intellectual property with material property, to build a system that defends the old against the new rather than a system that promotes progress. This constitutes an ideology which fully developed might harm the environment for creativity and restraint the publics access to the cultural heritage.<br>Uppsatsnivå: D

Holm, Rikke Heimdal. "Is an Authors Arguments on Reconciliation affected by his background? : Abductive Study on Patterns in Reconciliation Literatur." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för samhällsstudier (SS), 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-54130.

Full text
Abstract:
The field of reconciliation literature has grown substantially since the 1990s, and the concept of reconciliation is now associated with many different definitions and actions in the peace building process. In the diverse field of literature on reconciliation authors highlight different aspects as most important which complicates the knowledge of what a successful reconciliation process really is. To have a better understanding of the field of reconciliation and what affects an author, to argue for their specific theory this study will, through the approach of abductive reasoning, research whether the background of an author affects what they research. To represent the field of reconciliation literature an expert sampling of five authors who are all highly referenced and influence the field will be used. To answer the research objective an analytical frame work together with a hermeneutic text analysis will be applied to each authors text to highlight their arguments. Finally the authors arguments and background will be analyzed to find patterns in the texts which could be compared with possible connections or patterns in the authors background. Based on this study the result shows that authors with a background, which is not only academic might have another approach to understanding the reconciliation process but their arguments show no clear patterns which can be connected to the authors background, however understanding why an author argues is important to understand what kind of people are affecting the actions of reconciliation. This study looked at five authors who all represent a very similar background and arguments which can show a tendency in reconciliation literature that the most distinguished authors all share the same background and therefore might not provide any new insight to the field.

Ngula, Richmond Sadick. "Epistemic modality in social science research articles written by Ghanaian authors : a corpus-based study of disciplinary and native vs. non-native variations." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2015. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/76232/.

Full text
Abstract:
Using a corpus-based methodology, this thesis reports a study into how non-native Ghanaian academic authors of English in the disciplines of Sociology, Economics and Law deploy epistemic modality devices as rhetorical features of argumentation in their research articles (RAs) published in journals based in Ghana. The study focuses on understanding the ways in which the use of these rhetorical features by Ghanaian authors compare with their use in international RAs written by native academic authors of English. Based on the aims of the study, two sets of corpora of RAs for the Ghanaian and international authors were created and analysed to compare the use of epistemic modality features between the two groups of authors in terms of: depth of use, diversity of use, linguistic types of epistemic markers, phraseological patterns of notable epistemic markers and degrees of epistemic strength. The quantitative aspects of the comparisons relied mainly on frequency counts of epistemic markers which were supported by Log-likelihood tests to determine significant differences of epistemic use across disciplines and between the two groups of authors. The qualitative aspects (e.g., phraseological pattern analysis) focused mainly on a close inspection of concordance lines for comparisons. The findings of the study revealed that while Ghanaian writers seem to be generally aware of the most important epistemic devices used for academic writing, as they used as wide a range of epistemic devices as their international counterparts, they tended to use these devices significantly less in their RAs. A few cases of overuse and misuse of epistemic modality by Ghanaian writers were also observed. It was found also that many of the disciplinary variation patterns of epistemic use observed in the international RAs did not match with the patterns revealed in the RAs written by the Ghanaian authors. A further important finding was that whereas the international writers generally preferred medium and weak level epistemic markers over strong ones, the Ghanaian writers favoured the use of medium and strong level epistemic markers over weak ones. It also became apparent that the significant underuse of epistemic rhetorical features by the Ghanaian writers could be attributed to the way rhetorical features are represented in academic writing course materials in Ghanaian universities. The findings reported in this thesis suggest that there is the need for Ghanaian academic authors to make language adjustments to their academic writing if their writing practices are to fully adhere to international disciplinary norms and conventions.

Thackwray, Sarah. "Storytelling and social commentary in a comparison of Zakes Mda's Ways of Dying (1995) and Black Diamond (2009)." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/7149.

Full text
Abstract:
In a comparison of two novels, Ways of Dying (1995) and Black Diamond (2009), this dissertation examines Zakes Mda's ongoing use of fiction in presenting incisive social commentary in the post-apartheid literary context. Mda's debut novel is a complex magic realist tale of Toloki, the professional mourner, who journeys from the village to the urban township. It is markedly different from his post-millennial satire, which invokes the social realist form, constructing a rapidly unfolding plot of urban gangsters, crime and sex, in which the characters are more representational than well-developed. While Ways of Dying has been praised as Mda's thought-provoking novel of the transition, Black Diamond has sometimes been criticised as being less able to comment significantly on the state of post-millennial South Africa. Subsequently, this dissertation evaluates the potential of Mda's most recent fictional portrayal of post-apartheid society to provide a meaningful interpretation of and commentary on post-apartheid South Africa, alongside his earlier novel.

Abstract:
This investigation focuses on the study of the vulnerabilities of Portuguese authors, with its basis being a wider project about Culture Politics and Cultural Planning. As a result of the reviewed literature, we propose a heuristic model, which researches the authors’ vulnerabilities considering the contextual, subjective, and objective dimensions, of the historical-contextual, internal, and external factors, respectively. Using a qualitative methodology, eleven authors from various authorship backgrounds were interviewed. Therefore, with the results gathered, an inductive model was proposed. This model is comprised of 8 categories, constituted by 23 elements, regarding the vulnerabilities faced by the authors in Portugal. These are partly justified by the authors’ ‘invisibility’ at the eyes of the society and political system. Furthermore, 8 overcoming strategies were identified, as well as the split opinions regarding the creation of an Author’s Constitution. A set of interventional propositions was also produced, with the intent of discussing the improvement of the sector professionals’ living situation, and possibly embody Culture as a fundamental mainstay of sustainability.<br>N/A

Allen, Melanie. "The Short Fiction of Bobbie Ann Mason: Exposing the Problems in American Society & Searching for Some Solutions." TopSCHOLAR®, 1990. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2113.

Full text
Abstract:
Bobbie Ann Mason uses her fiction to portray the problems in American society. She devotes most of her time to average persons who are suffering from the rapid changes that society is going through. These characters at times seem lost and helpless, but ultimately they do not give up hope for a brighter future. Through social problems such as divorce, lack of communication, loss of identity and place, obsession with the past, submersion in rock music and TV, loss of ritual, proliferation of objects, lack of education, and the need to face mortality, these characters still seem to have hope and strength. There are serious problems to deal with, but there is also a future that can possibly bring better times if the problems can be solved successfully. But Mason's world is not completely pessimistic and not all of her characters are miserable. Many of them take advantage of the changes in society, and improve their lives. Also, there are still positive values left. They are not as obvious, but they are still there if a person takes the time to look. Not everything has changed for the worse. For example, Mason seems to suggest later marriages. Early marriages lead to discontentment and more than an abundance of problems, and most of Mason's characters who married younp. are very dissatisfied with their lives. Mason also stresses the fact that most people have the freedom of choice since people no longer have to behave in a certain manner, and society is more accepting than it once was. Mason also points out the peace and contentment that can be found with the land. She says as well that simplicity many times is preferable to the "technological advances" that have driven people to large cities where everyone seems the same, and she Insists that there are still small towns and contented people who inhabit them. Other positive qualities are the fact that we have the opportunity to receive an education, and we still have humor. We can look at the mistakes we have made and find humor in them as well as learn from them. Mason also seems to retain the hope that changes will keep occurring, that people still care enough to fight for a better, less problem-filled life. In subtle ways, Mason's fiction is optimistic.

McDougall, Charlotte. "Historicising the Feminist: A Study of Mary Wollstonecraft's Political and Discursive Contexts." The University of Waikato, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2355.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis has investigated the life and publications of Mary Wollstonecraft. The thesis is divided in to three chapters the first chapter explores the political and social context of late Eighteenth century England in which Wollstonecraft lived the majority of her life. It then moves on to discuss the 'Revolution Controversy' and Wollstonecraft's contribution to that debate. Giving specific attention to A Vindication of the Rights of Man as it is Wollstonecraft's first political publication, and was the first published response to Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France. Without first publishing A Vindication of the Rights of Man, Wollstonecraft could not have published her most famous work. Next the second chapter investigates Eighteenth century education, and how Wollstonecraft ideas on changing the nature of education would help reform society in her eyes. Education was recognized as having special significance by many Enlightenment philosophers, this thesis looks at the contribution of John Locke and Jean Jacques Rousseau to educational theory, and they ways in which Wollstonecraft responded to their ideas. In the final chapter the inclusive nature of Wollstonecraft's gender theory is considered. Wollstonecraft is widely recognised as publishing what became for many the founding document of modern western feminism. What is given less recognition is that Wollstonecraft was in fact interested in broad social reform, similar to many other Enlightenment philosophers, Wollstonecraft's social theory included changing education and socialisation for both women and men. Society could not be reformed without changing social and educational practices with regard to both II men and women. Wollstonecraft furthered the contemporary debate on the rights of man to include the rights of woman. Wollstonecraft criticised the unnatural distinctions of gender and class, setting out in both Vindications the negative consequences for the character of both men and women. Another less recognised aspect of Wollstonecraft's philosophy which this thesis has highlighted is the vital role that religion played, and its implications for her ideas. This aspect of Wollstonecraft's thought has tended to be over looked by many Wollstonecraft scholars, who try to place Wollstonecraft in some kind of political and social continuum which I think misses the revolutionary and far sighted nature of Wollstonecraft's philosophy. In taking a historicist approach or understanding to Wollstonecraft, by reading Wollstonecraft in the terms of the political and social environment of the late eighteenth century, it becomes easier to understand the radical nature of Wollstonecraft's ideas, and the personal hardships she faced as both a woman and a member of the lower middle class.

Pauk, Filgueira Barbara. "Crossing the channel : socio-cultural exchanges in English and French women's writings - 1830-1900." University of Western Australia. School of Social and Cultural Studies, 2009. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2009.0083.

Full text
Abstract:
The focus of this study is an investigation of cross-channel exchanges represented in travelogues, historical works, journalism, letters and journals written by English women Frances Trollope, Lady Margaret Blessington, George Eliot and Julia Kavanagh on France and by French women Flora Tristan and Marie Dronsart on England. The work is based on the view that narratives about another culture betray preconceptions and beliefs and are never innocent descriptions. Nineteenth-century English descriptions of France, for instance, are not only marked by the stereotype of the gregarious French bon vivant but also by the often tense political relationship and economical concurrence between the two countries. French descriptions of England reflect the consciousness of England's superiority in the domains of economy, industry and colonialism as well as the stereotype of the boring, monosyllabic, haughty, egoistic and often xenophobic Englishman. Given that writings on the other culture are marked by practices and belief systems as well as notions of superiority and inferiority like texts emerging from a colonial context, ideas which have been developed in this field by scholars such as Sara Mills and Reina Lewis have been used as a basis for this investigation. I argue that the women whose texts I analyse strategically employ 'discourses of difference' (to use Sara Mills' term), or alignment and 'othering' in regard to nation, class, and political opinion, in order to gain positions which allow them to challenge contemporary ideologies of femininity. They take advantage of their positions in very different ways, according to their personal, class and economic situations, their agenda, and their gendered position within society which changes significantly during the century. The English women Frances Trollope, Lady Margaret Blessington, George Eliot and Julia Kavanagh construct themselves as part of the tradition of French salonnières from the seventeenth century to the present, while the French women Flora Tristan and Marie Dronsart align themselves with English travel writers, particularly Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Through a careful construction of these foremothers, which often differed from other representations of them, they criticise gender politics in their own country and endeavour to normalise their own activities as intellectuals and writers, in the case of Tristan as a socialist and feminist activist. This strategy is complemented by 'othering' with regard to nation, class and political convictions which confers on the women an authoritative authorial voice and / or allows them to support their argument. They endorse ideologies of gender, nation and class at the same time as they reject some aspects of them. This study reveals new aspects of nineteenth-century discussions of the so-called 'woman question' through a broader approach which encompasses not only the parameters of gender, class and political orientation but also cross-cultural experience.

How cookbooks' design and content have changed is an area that has not been investigated to a greater extent. Cookbooks are part of cultures culinary history, which allows you to understand who the food was cooked for and which food was cooked. The essay is about how cookbooks changed from 1755-1951 in terms of design, structure and content. Five cookbooks with about 50 years intervals have been studied to see similarities and differences. The method is based on a content analysis of five books where the foreword and recipes have been compiled, analyzed and compared to each other to see how they have changed during this time period. The result shows that there are differences in the books but also some similarities. In particular, we can see that technical developments have influenced the contents of the books due to the raw materials and cooking methods that were used. By contrast, the target group has not changed during this period.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Um protótipo do ambiente proposto foi implementado e disponibilizado para testes preliminares e respectiva avaliação.<br>We had born in an analog society and moved rapidly towards to a digital society, where the coexistence wins new ways and demand requires more professional experience. In this new society, the software becomes increasingly necessary, since this is a programming necessary for the functioning of most of the tools available today. There then emerge where developers exchange knowledge and share their work through virtual communities. The communities that are working today aimed to idealism of free software, and they are not worried about the users as an individual contributor, and the provision of legal notices in plain language that direct and clarify its employees and users about their rights and duties. Moreover, there is a lack of educational software available to the mass, which is usually proprietary software, with cost relatively costly for some institutions, or even to the end user. In this work, and interviews were conducted search of doctrine, communities and their existing business models, from which it was generated a qualitative comparison between existing communities. This paper presents a proposal for an environment for the management of development projects collaborative educational software through a model of remuneration for the distribution of funds obtained in the community (for sponsorships, donations and micro rate or by the service of software downloading) and such as guidance on the legal tool in itself, through documents and legal disclaimer during navigation of the user. Search is to encourage the performance of young talent in computing and professional education in the development of educational software. A prototype of the proposed environment has been implemented and made available for preliminary testing and its evaluation.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to explore Marcus Tullius Cicero's awareness and interpretation of contemporary political events as reflected in his private correspondence during the last years of both the Roman republic and his own life. Cicero's correspondence gives a detailed view of current political events in Rome and constitutes, with Caesar's own narrative, our major contemporary evidence for the circumstances of the civil war of 49 BC. The dissertation takes as Leitmotiv Cicero's own judgement of the state as 'sacrificial victim' to the ambitions of individual politicians, with as metaphor his examination of a 'dying' body politic in the manner of a haruspex inspecting the entrails of a sacrificial animal. It poses the question whether Cicero understood the message of political decline signalled by the 'entrails' of the 'carcass' of the res publica, and whether this ability in its turn enabled him to anticipate future political development in Rome. In what follows, the theoretical input of Cicero's predecessors, their perceptions of constitutional development, and of Roman politics in particular, as well as Cicero's own perception of their political theories will be considered in order to determine the extent of Cicero's awareness of a larger pattern of political events, and how consistent he was in his analyses of such patterns, that is, to what extent Cicero may be considered seriously as a political analyst.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die oogmerk van die verhandeling is om vas te stel of Marcus Tullius Cicero met reg daaop kan aanspraak maak dat hy eietydse politieke gebeure sinvol kon interpreteer as die manifestering van 'n nuwe politieke stroming wat die voorkoms van die toekomstige Romeinse politieke toneel sou bepaal.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the socio-cultural issues in the praise poems of three Xhosa chiefs, namely, Nkosi Whyte Lent Mbali Maqoma of the amaJingqi, Nkosi Doyle Mpuhle Jongilanga of Dushane of Ndlambe and Nkosi Sipho Mangindi Burns-Ncamashe of amaGwali of Tshiwo. What comes out clear in the poems of these chiefs is that they experienced power problems after and before 1994. Their poetry protests about these political influences and calls for the restoration of the dignity of the chieftancy. The socio-cultural aspects of the praise poems of each chief are devoted to a chapter: Nkosi Whyte Lent Mbali Maqoma in Chapter 2, Nkosi Doyle Mpuhle Jongilanga in Chapter 3, and Nkosi Sipho Mangindi Burns-Ncamashe in Chapter 4. Attention is paid to each chiefs genealogy, praise names, names of oxen because of traditional significance in the life of the chief, the chiefs mother, and place names which have historical importance in the life of the chief. As part of the theoretical framework of praise poetry, praise poetry theory is handled in Chapter 1 of the study. It is concluded in Chapter 5 that Xhosa paramount chiefs still play and will playa crucial socio-cultural role in their communities. Abstract:
[EN] The possibility of knowing people traits on the basis of what they write is a field of growing interest named author profiling. To infer a user's gender, age, native language or personality traits, simply by analysing her texts, opens a wide range of possibilities from the point of view of forensics, security and marketing. Furthermore, social media proliferation, which allows for new communication models and human relations, strengthens this wide range of possibilities to bounds never seen before. Idiosyncrasy inherent to social media makes them a special environment of communication, where freedom of expression, informality and spontaneous generation of topics and trends, enhances the knowledge of the daily reality of people in their use of language. However, the same idiosyncrasy makes difficult, or extremely costly, the application of linguistic techniques. In this work we have proposed EmoGraph, a graph-based approach with the aim at modelling the way that users express their emotions, and the way they include them in their discourse, bearing in mind not only their frequency of occurrence, but also their position and relationship with other elements in the discourse. Our starting hypothesis is that users express themselves and their emotions differently depending on their age and gender, and besides, we think that this is independent on their language and social media where they write. We have collaborated in the creation of a common framework of evaluation at the PAN Lab of CLEF, generating resources that allowed us to verify our hypothesis achieving comparable and competitive results with the best ones obtained by other researchers on the field. In addition, we have investigated whether the expression of emotions would help to differentiate among users of different varieties of the same language, for example, Spanish from Spain, Mexican and Argentinian, or Portuguese from Portugal and Brazil. Our hypothesis is that the variation among languages is based more on lexical aspects, and we have corroborated it after comparing EmoGraph with representations based on word patterns, distributed representations and a representation that uses the whole vocabulary, but reducing its dimensionality to only 6 features per class, what is suitable for its application to big data environments such as social media.<br>[ES] La posibilidad de conocer rasgos de una persona a partir únicamente de los textos que escribe se ha convertido en un área de gran interés denominada author profiling. The qualitative approach methodology leads the investigative task and the theoretical support searches the knowledge of Social Sciences and the Social Representation Theory, which rise the reflection beyond the individual, considering the conceptual, historical, scientific, media, legal and institutional contexts. The presentation of the interviewees is based on two perspectives: the prison institution, through documentary research in the records of the AVS and the interviewees from sixty-one personal contacts "interviewer-interviewees", mixed by the formal conduct characterized by the filling of the standard questionnaire and dialogues, both purposely targeted the themes: life history, sexualities (for themselves and their victims), children and adolescents, practiced and suffered sexual violence, victims of sexual violence, among others, like the moments of encouragement to free events and narratives of AVS. The result of the interviews showed two constants among AVS, from the empirical field: most categorize people who practice sexual violence as monsters, sick or abnormal and the different facets between denying and assuming the violence. From the perspective of the author of this document, the analysis of the AVS´s social representations about the victims elected three units of meaning: victims and victims of sexual violence, children/adolescents and sexuality (of victims and AVS). The main findings indicate that respondents recognize children and adolescents who experience sexual contact with adults as victims, relation named as a violence and a morally reprehensible act; list harmful consequences of sexual violence for the victims and also for themselves, showing their inseparability; present contradiction between not distinguishing categories as children and adolescents (both represented as biological immature, mental and emotional) and rank crimes from age category; nominate children and adolescents in sexual interaction with adults as innocent, seductive and co-authors, but always victims; show that sexual desire, if any, is directed only to the victims of the violence they committed, and not to other children and adolescents; show crystallization of the role as an author and victim of violence from the gender category; report various negative emotions about themselves in relation to the sexual violence they practiced and the caused consequences in the lives of their victims, such as repentance, disgust, anger, guilt, shame, self-image of monstrosity. Their representations are similar with the three concepts parameters adopted and with those produced and reproduced by common sense, media, law, literature and institutional discourses. The findings shown in this work and the analytical approach used inquire the assertion of part of the international literature on the fact that the AVS fail to recognize the emotional needs of their victims, because they would present empathy deficits toward them, explaining the problem in a strictly intrapsychological bias. Finally, and based on authors of the areas of Social Sciences, appears as necessary the exercise of a new interpretation that links between individual and social experience of AVS to the dominant psychosocial theories, as a contribution to the field of specialized Brazilian studies on the AVS, as well as provide professionals the minimum knowledge to the treatment in the legal field, and treatment in the field of physical and mental health of AVS, in here seen beyond the stereotypes that are charged on them before being on trial.<br>O tema principal desta tese tem como centro a análise das representações sociais sobre as vítimas de violência sexual na concepção de vinte e seis autores de violência sexual (AVS) contra crianças e adolescentes, encarcerados na Penitenciária Coronel Odenir Guimarães (POG), situada na cidade de Aparecida de Goiânia, Estado de Goiás, Brasil.

Abstract:
Following recent critical work on writers' representations of sociability in Romantic literature, this thesis examines in detail the textual strategies (such as allusion, acts of address, and the use of 'coterie' symbols or references) which writers used to seek to establish a friendly or sympathetic relationship with a particular reader or readers, or to create and define a sense of community identity between readers. The thesis focuses on specific relationships between pairs and groups of writers (who form one another's first readers), and examines 'sociable' genres like letters, manuscript albums, occasional poetry, and periodical essays in a diverse series of author case-studies (Anna Barbauld, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Charles Lamb, John Keats and Leigh Hunt). Such genres, the thesis argues, show how manuscript and print culture could frequently overlap and intersect, meaning that writers confronted the demands of two co-existing audiences - one private and familiar, the other public and unknown - in the same work. Rather than arguing that writers used manuscript culture practices and produced 'coterie' works purely to avoid confronting their anxieties about publishing in the commercial sphere of print culture, the thesis suggests that in producing such 'coterie' works writers engaged with and reflected contemporary philosophical and political concerns about the relationship between the individual and wider communities. In these works, writers engaged with the legacy of eighteenth-century philosophical ideas about the role (and limitations) of the sympathetic imagination in maintaining social communities, and with interpretative theories about the best kind of reader. Furthermore, the thesis argues that reading literary texts in the specific, material context in which they are 'published' to particular readers, either in print, manuscript, or letters, is vital to understanding writer/reader relationships in the Romantic period. This approach reveals how within each publication space, individual texts could be placed (either by their writers, by editors, or by other readers) in meaningful relationships with other texts, absorbing or appropriating them into new interpretative contexts.

Abstract:
In this thesis I explore the significance of the publication of Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique (1963) to the emergence of the second wave Womens Liberation Movement in the US in the late 1960s. To this end, I deploy key concepts provided through social movement theory (eg collective identity, collective action frames, social problem construction). I also incorporate Max Weber and Antonio Gramscis insights on the indispensable role played by leaders who demonstrate a clear and effective political will. Webers three part model of pure charisma is used as a general template for understanding the impact of Friedans text. I critique aspects of Webers theory of charisma, in particular his failure to appreciate that the written word can mark the initial emergence phase of charisma rather than its routinisation. I augment Webers insights on charismatic leadership by attending to Gramscis emphasis on the necessity of winning the war of ideas that must be waged at the level of civil society within advanced capitalist societies. I examine Gramscis understanding of the power available to the organic intellectual who is aligned with the interests of subaltern groups and who succeeds in revealing the hegemonic commitments of accepted common sense. In the latter part of this thesis, I apply these many useful concepts to my case study analysis of Betty Friedans The Feminine Mystique. I argue that Friedans accessible, middlebrow text gave birth to a new discursive politics which was critically important not only for older women, but for a younger generation of more radicalised women. I emphasise how Friedans text mounted a concerted attack on the discursive construction of femininity under patriarchal capitalism. I question Friedans diagnostic claim that the problems American women faced were adequately captured by the terminology of the trapped housewife syndrome. I conclude by arguing that social movement researchers have to date failed to appreciate the leadership potential of the charismatic author-leader who succeeds in addressing and offering a solution to a pressing social problem through the medium of a best-selling, middlebrow text.

Abstract:
The task of analyzing a text of interest in order to find demographicinformation of an unknown author based on how the text is written, called author profiling, has become a problem of growing interest.Author profiling can for instance be used in crime investigations togain more information about a possible suspect, which could forexample be a potential violent lone actor that reveals an intentionof committing targeted violence. Machine learning algorithms offers an efficient approach to performauthor profiling. Previous work in author profiling have mostly usedtraditional machine learning algorithms where features are manuallyextracted, which the algorithms base their prediction on. However,in this thesis we compare two different approaches towards authorprofiling, one where the features are manually extracted using thelearning algorithms Support Vector Machine and Feed-Forward NeuralNetworks and one where the features are learned from raw datausing the learning algorithms Convolutional Neural Networks and LongShort-Term Memory. These learning algorithms were used to predictthe gender, age and native language from a text of an unknown author. Also, to get an understanding of how well author profiling works inthe wild, we tested our models on a different domain than they weretrained on. The results showed that in our setting, manually extracted featuresworked better for author profiling. Also, applying learning algorithms toa different domain than they were trained on significantly decreased theperformance. In addition, the results showed that the characteristics ofthe datasets and the chosen hyperparameters for each learning algorithmwere essential for the performance.

Abstract:
<p>This exploratory study applies social network analysis techniques to existing, publicly available data to understand collaboration patterns within the co-author network of a federally-funded, interdisciplinary research program. The central questions asked: What underlying social capital structures can be determined about a group of researchers from bibliometric data and other publicly available existing data? What are ways social network tools characterize the interdisciplinarity or cross-disciplinarity of co-author teams? The names of 411 grantees were searched in the Web of Science indexing database; author information from the WoS search results resulted in a 191-member co-author network. Research domains were included as attribute data for the co-author network. UCINet social network analysis software calculated a large 60 node component and two larger components with 12 and 8 nodes respectively, the remainder of the network consisted of smaller 2-5 node components. Within the 191-node co-author network the following analyses were performed to learn more about the structural social capital of this group: Degree and Eigenvector centrality measures, brokerage measures, and constraint measures. Additionally, ten randomly selected dyads and the five 4-node cliques within the 191-node network were examined to find patterns of cross-disciplinary collaboration among researcher and within award teams. Award numbers were added as attribute data to five 4-node cliques and 10 random dyads; these showed instances of collaboration among interdisciplinary award teams. Collaboration patterns across disciplines are discussed. Data from this research could serve as a baseline measure for growth in future analyses of the case studied. This method is recommended as a tool to gain insights to a research community and to track publication collaboration growth over time. This research method shows potential as a way to identify aspects of a research community?s social structural capital, particularly within an interdisciplinary network to highlight where researchers are working well together or to learn where there is little collaboration.

Abstract:
As pesquisas empíricas formam 80,4% do corpus. Both peer review and scientometric data have different characteristics that can influence the way the research is evaluated, but the usage of citation indicators in international databases such as Web of Science (WoS) for national evaluation systems has been especially harmful to SSH, due to their peculiar characteristics of publication. Aim: present a synthesis of the literature on evaluation of the SSH output and perceive how specialists deal with these current questions. Methods: literature review. A corpus composed of 107 journal articles was retrieved by direct search in WoS and also from the output available in the scientific network Research Gate. A final selection was made based on qualitative criteria. A bibliometric analysis and a qualitative analysis were carried out in sequence. Results and discussions: geographic and institutional distribution show that the main output of the corpus comes from Spain (CSIC), Belgium (University of Antwerp) and The Netherlands (University of Leiden). The most frequent publications were Scientometrics, Research Evaluation and Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology, and 43% of journals belong to the Information Science area. The quantitative evaluation of SSH is present in 81.3% of the corpus; the qualitative evaluation, in 42.1% and the mixed evaluation, in 15%. Empirical studies form 80.4% of the corpus. Reflective and propositional studies form 9.3% of the corpus, and they are mostly empirical research (80%) and also tend to approach the evaluation of SSH as a process both quantitative and qualitative (70%). Conclusions: the literature on evaluation of SSH output is in an intermediate stage of development, in which some alternatives, proposals and applied studies to the adequacy of evaluation instruments are pointed out. Information Science emerges as a prominent discipline in the analysis of this object, which is in consolidation. Although there is a tendency to use tools that combine quantitative and qualitative aspects of the output, an indicator for SSH evaluation has not yet been created and there is no assessment model that can be identified as consensual.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper was to find out which blog strategies some of Sweden's leading blog writers used / are using to achieve success with their blog, how they created a successful personal brand through their blog, and what they think motivates companies to use their blog as a marketing channel. Blog writers view is complemented by two corporate perspective on the phenomenon, one company working as an advertising intermediary between companies and blog authors, and one fashion company that have good experience of this marketing channel. To get the questions answered a qualitative study was used, with the help of a web survey eleven respondents participated. The results showed that the blog writers themselves believe that they are not using any special blog strategies for reaching success. Furthermore, results showed that the creation of a personal brand through a blog is made possible by the bloggers’ distinctive personality and blog strategies. Corporations are motivated to use the blog as a marketing channel for three main reasons- the blogs overall range, the possibility of increased target hit and the blog writer's credibility towards the readers. Corporations are looking for a marketing channel where they easier reach their main audience through viral marketing from a, out of the readers' perspective, trustworthy person. For the blogger to retain credibility towards the readers, they must sell the products in trustworthy manner. All blog writers do not have a distinctive personality, a strong personal brand, functioning blog strategies and the talent and finesse to market products, which results in a minority of bloggers reaching success with their blog.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Maria Crisitina Schefer.pdf: 498249 bytes, checksum: a3c51ad22ff96227f65f9b3df853fa62 (MD5)<br>Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-21T17:13:32Z (GMT). This study had the purpose to understand and analyze the senses and meanings of deprivation of liberty for adolescents authors of criminal offenses, outlining the trajectory of the adolescents’ involvement with criminal offense (s) and their relationship with the social-educational measure of deprivation of liberty, as well as their perception and feelings regarding these measures as being social-educational and/or punitive. The theoretical approach of Cultural-Historical Psychology was used, inasmuch as it conceives the construction of subjectivity as the result of a dialectic relationship between the subject and his/her social-historical context. The photo voice technique and narrative interview were instruments used for data collection. The participants were six adolescents, authors of criminal offenses, who were under social-educational measures of deprivation of liberty in a facility located in Salvador, State of Bahia. Data analysis was based on the subjects' discourses about the photographs and their life histories. Results are presented according to seven major areas, subdivided into categories assorted into images and speeches, which: 1) allude to how people judge the units of deprivation of liberty and adolescents authors of criminal offenses; 2) relate to MSEL in its punitive aspect (pay for what one did) and to its prison aspect (railings, walls, watchtowers); 3) refer to the sense of protection; 4) refer moments of reflection regarding mistakes they made and regarding themselves (self-knowledge); 5) mention the relationships and interactions established during the period of deprivation of liberty, as the rules of coexistence and the physical spaces of religious, family and leisure conviviality, celebratory events and relationships / interactions established with professionals; 6) refer to opportunities, involving learning and professionalization, and their expectations about the future. Analysis of these data enabled the understanding that the participants have both punitive and social-educational meanings regarding the social-educational measure of deprivation of liberty, in a way that social and educational aspects stand out, providing them development of positive expectations about their future in freedom. The institution of deprivation of liberty, and its nuances, ensures that these youngsters have access to rights not previously experienced, and may allow them to reflect on their careers and envision a life detached from the infraction experience. Results indicate the urgent necessity to think about Policies for the assistance of children and adolescents, in order to prevent their involvement in crime by ensuring rights and the possibility of drawing up plans for their lives away from violence and crime; in addition to policies aimed at monitoring the adolescents who served in the social-educational system, so the expectations created within the social-educational facilities are not lost in face of an uncertain future, which is far from what was experienced and perceived by these subjects during the period they were in the social-educational facility.<br>Salvador

Leff, Carol Willa. "Bosman as Verbindingsteken: Hybridities in the Writing of Herman Charles Bosman." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1013163.

Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with how hybridity is created and interpreted by Herman Charles Bosman in his fiction and non-fiction. Bosman was a gifted writer and raconteur who captured the historical, socio-political context of his time by translating Afrikaans culture for the edification and pleasure of an English readership. Hennie Aucamp summed up this linguistic and cultural translation by pointing out that Bosman was a writer who acted as a “verbindingsteken” or hyphen (65) between Afrikaans and English. His texts contain many voices, and are therefore essentially hybrid. Firstly, by drawing on aspects of postcolonial theory, the terms ‘hybridity’, ‘culture’ and ‘identity’, are discussed. Homi Bhabha’s notion of ‘hybridity’ is the conceptual lens through which Bosman’s texts are viewed, and aspects of Mikhail Bakhtin’s cultural theory also serve the same function. Thereafter, biographies of Bosman are discussed in an effort to understand his hyphenated identity. Following this, specific attention is paid to a selection of Bosman’s essays, short stories, and a novel. Scholarly opinions aid interpretation of levels of hybridity in Bosman’s work. In analysing Bosman’s texts critically, it becomes clear that he believed in a united South Africa that acknowledged and accepted all races. However, analysis also reveals that there are some inconsistencies in Bosman’s personal views, as expressed particularly in his essays. His short stories do not contain the same contradictions. Critical analysis of the novel Willemsdorp attests that cultural hybridity is not always viewed as celebratory. It can also be a painful space where identities are split, living both inside and outside their environment, and subsequently marginalized. Bosman’s texts, although published decades ago, remain relevant today in post-apartheid South Africa as much of his writing can be seen as a record of historical events. His short stories and novels capture a confluence of languages, people and cultures. His essays illustrate a deep commitment to promoting South African culture and literature. When reading Bosman one is constantly reminded that differences are not only to be acknowledged, but embraced, in what he prophetically imagined as a hybrid, post-apartheid South African society.
