Abstract:
This special issue considers how depictions of premodern catastrophe—environmental, social, political—shape and are shaped by literary form. The issue's introduction explores what form has to do with catastrophe and offers a case study of how form moves in a Middle English lyric about three fourteenth-century catastrophes: a revolt, a plague, and an earthquake. The six essays that follow approach the dynamics of catastrophic form in their own ways while sharing a set of assumptions about how catastrophe invites formal experimentation. Form, these essays agree, can manage or even contain the ch

The paper discusses the fundamental contradiction of evolution. On the one hand, evolution laws require sociums to develop, the termination of the development leads to sociums' death (“social production can exist only as expanded reproduction”). On the other hand, catastrophes (and stressful situations in general) are a driving force for development, because they stimulate evolutionary self-assemblies. That is why “catastrophe noise” is always present in the life of sociums. However, if its level is significantly higher or lower than some optimal level, the socium d

In light of climate change and other existential threats, policy commentators sometimes suggest that society should be more concerned about catastrophes. This document reflects on what is, or should be, society’s attitude toward such low-probability, high-impact events. The question underlying this analysis is how society considers (1) a major accident that leads to a large number of deaths; (2) a large number of small accidents that each kill one person, where the two situations lead to the same total number of deaths. Review question / Objective: The objective of this research work is to evaluate the generation capacity of experimental research carried out in Peru, which will help in making future decisions, both to establish future studies, to elucidate the lack of studies in certain areas, as well as to determine the country's roadmap in a current and future state of emergency. Condition being studied: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has spread worldwide becoming a pandemic
