Abstract:
This thesis develops an alternative critique of social urban regeneration practice by using a political-governance approach to examine the impact of regeneration governance upon barriers and opportunities for social sustainability. The research responds to a call from scholars to refocus sustainability research on the institutional, political and governance space that fosters or marginalises its presence and form. This ethnographic case study involved a year-long cycle of participant observation within the extensive Hastings regeneration governance infrastructure, and interviews with key stakeholders in that regeneration community. An analysis using NVivo was undertaken of thirty-one interviews, fifty regeneration governance meetings and the documents from each meeting. From that data emerged a strong argument for the centrality of the specificity of place in the construction or obstruction of social sustainability. Of particular importance is the impact of the socio-political context and the institutional and cultural legacy of New Labour partnership-led regeneration. The alternative critique identified in the Hastings example, in part emerges from the agency of a large-scale, political, and active Voluntary Community Sector (VCS) that is integral to, and embedded into the local governance infrastructure. The alternative model of activism employed by the VCS core utilises governance norms and practices to navigate the complex regeneration policy and governance landscape to contribute to, and disturb dominant agendas. In this regeneration landscape a distinctive local socio-political context, an alternative model of activism, and a valued good governance partnership culture enable what other commentators have termed 'actually existing' social sustainability (AESS). The research findings advance an understanding of principal critiques of the New Labour regeneration project, including the notions of 'post-political regeneration tactics' and democratic deficit, through a critical analysis of their presence in terms of their obstruction of AESS. The alternative critique that emerges from this research explores a possible shift in the locus and production of power, and the redistribution of roles in UK regeneration practice that enables a stronger VCS position.

Afjei, Sayed MR. "A Content Analysis of Sustainability Dimensions in Annual Reports." FIU Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1926.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the triple bottom line of sustainability, in the context of both profit-oriented and non-profit oriented organizations. Sustainability is a compound result of interaction between economic, environmental, and social dimensions. Sustainability cannot be achieved without balance between all three dimensions, which has implications for measuring sustainability and prioritizing goals. This study demonstrates a method for measuring organizational sustainability achievement in these three dimensions of sustainability. Content analysis of the annual reports of corporations from the United States, Continental Europe (and Scandinavia), and Asia reveals that the economic dimension remains the preeminent aspect, and corporations still have a long way to go to reach comprehensive sustainability by maintaining a balance between the three dimensions of sustainability. The analysis also shows a high level of isomorphism in the sustainability practices of corporations, suggesting that even the most sustainable corporations are taking a somewhat passive role in prioritizing sustainability goals. A list of 25 terms for each dimension of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social) has been developed which can be used by corporations to develop and communicate their sustainability practices most effectively to the maximum number of their stakeholders. In contrast, botanical gardens demonstrate more balance among the three dimensions of sustainability.

Del, Castillo Nicolo Precioso C. "How We Dwell: neighbourhood liveability from the perspective of residents." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/403254.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis clarifies the operational definition of liveability as it is used in discussions on the social dimensions of sustainability, as well as provides proof of its practicality as a tool for attaining social sustainability at the neighbourhood level. The definition of liveability is culled through a thorough examination of existing uses and implications of the term in academic and practical literature. Liveability is then defined as, “meeting people's needs according to the quality of environment they want”. Literature on liveability metrics also revealed how these fall short in capturing what neighbourhood residents value about their neighbourhoods. Thus, an alternative approach in the conception and analysis of neighbourhood liveability from a social practice perspective was realised, instead of an economic-technical practice perspective. The aim of this thesis is to find out how residents view their neighbourhood, and in the process, discover what would indicate neighbourhood liveability from their perspective. This study adopted a qualitative, grounded theory research design. Case studies of neighbourhoods from three countries were done to achieve a grounding of concepts about social structures, and to attain a holistic, interpretive approach to the problem of liveability. Six case studies were chosen to capture varied climatic and cultural contexts that may be influential in determining robust neighbourhood liveability criteria. Two neighbourhoods each were selected for the cities of Gold Coast, Australia -- a subtropical city with an emerging multi-cultural population; Wellington, New Zealand -- a temperate city with a multicultural population; and Quezon City, Philippines -- a tropical city with a relatively homogeneous population. The two neighbourhoods in each city were purposely an old neighbourhood and a new neighbourhood, to uncover differences and congruences in values of neighbourhood within the same city. A total of 129 respondents from these three neighbourhoods were interviewed to find out how they viewed their neighbourhood and what they valued in them. Each neighbourhood's physical layout, system of governance and social makeup was analysed in relation to the respondents' views about their neighbourhood. A total of 28 dimensions of neighbourhood, which were grouped into 4 themes – Personal, Physical, Social and Political – were uncovered in the analysis of residents’ responses. The respondents' descriptions of their neighbourhood show how neighbourhoods are perceived primarily in social terms, then in physical, personal, and political terms. The descriptions varied across the neighbourhoods, with some dimensions salient only to particular neighbourhoods. These variations demonstrated the contextual nature of neighbourhoods. Further analysis showed that, overall, the respondents had more to like about the physical aspects of neighbourhood than the non-physical (social and political) aspects. In contrast, the non-physical aspects were highlighted when the respondents talked about what they disliked about their neighbourhood. These observations suggested that there could be a different set of factors that lead to neighbourhood satisfaction, mainly physical, while certain non-physical factors lead to neighbourhood dissatisfaction, such as the perception of crime, and socially incompatible neighbours. These general similarities notwithstanding, the data underlined the varied levels of importance given to certain neighbourhood aspects across the study areas, which strengthened the claim that neighbourhoods should be viewed in their own unique contexts. The contextual evaluations demonstrated how neighbourhood liveability depends on intervening factors such as the residents’ values or lifestyles, and/or developments in or outside the neighbourhood itself, both of which are subject to change. This realization allows the conclusion that liveability may be conceived as a dynamic zone of fit between people’s residential aspirations and the actual environment they live in.

Malin, Redmo. "A systems perspective on sustainability measures aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in three Swedish municipalities."

Abstract:
2019 was the year with the highest measured amount of GHG emissions in history, indicating that our existing way of living is unsustainable and demands substantial changes. New ways of governing environmental issues are therefore being called upon in which the local level has great potential to create change. Sustainability measures involving integrated social dimensions which questions the motive for performing or engaging in emission demanding activities are found leading to a more long-lasting change. In Sweden, the decentralized decision model makes municipalities have a large responsibility for creating change in crucial emission demanding areas. Recognizing these concerns, this study applies a multi-dimensional system perspective with a broad range of cultural, habitual and technological aspects by Jensen et al. (2019) on three front-running municipalities (Tyresö, Växjö and Lund) working to reduce emission levels. The study focuses on distinguishing between different drivers for change among sustainability measures regarding energy and mobility functions, with a specific focus on the account of incorporated social dimensions. The results indicate that there is a lack of integrated social dimensions among the selected municipalities, in which only 26% of the grand total of 220 analyzed measures involve integrated social elements which enables a system-wide change. Technical and individual behavioural changes are far more prioritized than changes which are linked to collective lifestyle aspects and involve a mixture of technology, norms, cultures and organizations within the society, which are aspects proven more likely to lead to a system-wide change. The study provides knowledge on the capability of local decision making to enforce a systemic change toward sustainability if the current measures are carried out, in which the results indicate that the change among the three selected municipalities will be limited.

Abstract:
In response to growing social inequality, environmental crises, and economic instability, sustainability discourse has become the dominant "master signifier" for many fields, particularly the field of urban planning. However, in practice many sustainability methods overemphasize technological and economic growth-oriented solutions while underemphasizing the social dimension. The social dimension of sustainability remains a "concept in chaos" drawing little agreement on definitions, domains, and indicators for addressing the social challenges of urban life. In contrast, while the field of public health, with its emphasis on social justice principles, has made significant strides in framing and developing interventions to target the social determinants of health (SDH), this work has yet to be integrated into sustainability practice as a tool for framing the social dimension. Meanwhile, as municipalities move forward with these lopsided efforts at approaching sustainability practice, cities continue to experience gentrification, increasing homelessness, health disparities, and many other concerns related to social inequity, environmental injustice, and marginalization. This research involves multi-site, comparative case studies of neighborhood-scale sustainability planning projects in Portland, U.S.; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Nagoya, Japan to bring to light an understanding of how the social dimension is conceptualized and translated to practice in different contexts, as well as the challenges planners, citizen participants, and other stakeholders encounter in attempting to do so. These case studies find that these neighborhood-scale planning efforts are essentially framing the social dimension in terms of principles of SDH. Significant challenges encountered at the neighborhood-scale relate to political economic context and trade-offs between ideals of social sustainability, such as social inclusion and nurturing a sense of belonging when confronted with diverse neighborhood actors, such as sexually oriented businesses and recent immigrants. This research contributes to urban social sustainability literature and sustainability planning practice by interrogating these contested notions and beginning to create a pathway for integration of SDH principles into conceptualizations of social sustainability.

Abstract:
The following report is a qualitative study, and examines how newcomers to the labor market experiencing motivation and what drives them in their professional life. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate whether if it’s possible to discern some new aspects that is not mentioned in existing motivation theories. The empirical data consists of twelve semi-structured interviews with persons born in the 1990s, where each interview was approximately 45 minutes long. The result shows that there is an awareness and a kind of sustainability in the interviewees answers, that outweighs economic factors and surroundings. We can with the help of the empirical material see a trend that suggest that interviewees are driven and motivated by factors which lies further in the future, and that they can find meaning in the tasks that might not generate any direct reward. The interviewees have a long-term and sustainable approach to their work and are motivated by the future, and this point of view has become a form of survival strategy whenever the work is not stimulating enough. This dimension of sustainability is not presented in the earlier theories of motivation and we would therefore like to suggest that we contributed with important insights to further study.

Abstract:
As citizens in an increasingly global and digitalized world, everyone feels small from time to time. Cities expand and at the same time the sense of belonging to a neighbourhood decrease. It is hard to find a way to root ourselves. While arguments occur over human nature, it is safe to assert that humans are social beings, and we have a need to interact with each other. Public spaces should fill the need of physical space were communities and neighbourhoods can meet, but trends in city planning move in different directions. We need places, paths and roads that are built for us, where there is room for interaction and encounters. We need an urban everyday life that allows us being human. Cultural planning is an approach and concept that has the potential to fill the void between city planning and citizens’ needs. When talking about tools in the field of cultural planning, we must ask what tools exist and how do we use them? In this thesis we identify and explore a network of people and groups involved with cultural planning, as well as the different tools associated with it. Within the network, the term cultural planning is discussed as problematic. This led us to our questions: How is cultural planning conceptualized? How can cultural planning become more established and recognized? And how can the cultural planning network be strengthened? Our goals are to unbox the concept of cultural planning by finding its language, and during our process help the network in their future work of communicating cultural planning. We call this unboxing cultural planning. The central focus of this study is the concept of cultural planning. Since the concept is complex and not yet established, we will examine cultural planning from three starting points. Using perspectives from different professions and practitioners, we explore cultural planning as a term, as an approach, and as a collection of core values. By constructing case studies and analysing them through four relevant terms, we suggest on how to widen the concept and network of cultural planning.

Abstract:
Aim: The effect that mandatory sustainability reporting have on disclosures regarding the negative sustainability area for companies operating in controversial industry sectors are widely unexplored. The pupose of this study has therefore been to investigate whether there is a relationship between mandatory sustainability reporting and the amount of social sustainability information disclosed by socially controversial companies. The purpose has also been to investigate whether there is a relationship between mandatory sustainability reporting and the amount of environmental sustainability information disclosed by environmentally controversial companies.  Method: The study adopts a positivist research philosophy with a deductive approach and longitudinal design with data covering five years for 23 Swedish controversial companies. The study is carried out with a quantitative method where primary data has been collected through a content analysis. The study is also based on secondary data obtained from the Retriever database. The data was then analyzed in the statistical program SPSS, which carried out descriptive statistics, correlationstest and regressionanalysis to test the hypotheses of the study.  Result and conclusion: The results of the study showed no significant relationship between mandatory sustainability reporting and the amount of social sustainability information disclosed by socially controversial companies. On the contrary, the results showed a significant positive relationship between mandatory sustainability reporting and the amount of environmental sustainability information disclosed by environmentally controversial companies.  Theoretical and practical result: The theoretical results of the study are further based on research regarding possible connections between mandatory sustainability reporting and the amount of reporting within two different sustainability dimensions (environmental and social) for two different group of controversial companies (environmental and social). Through further empirical research in this area, the litterature is expanded as the study has found results that both contradict and confirm previous research. The practical results of the study also give an indication of how effective the regulation of sustainability reporting is for socially and environmentally controversial companies. Suggestion for future research: The population included in this study consist of Swedish controversial companies that are covered by mandatory sustainability reporting. Further reasearch could therefore adopt a broader perspective where other countries or industries are included to see if the results obtained in this study also holds for these countries or industries. The study also identifies differences between socially and environmentally controversial companies. What these differences are due to and whether they have any statistical significance is something that further research can investigate since it was not the pupose of this study to further investigate this.

Al, Kaabi Ahmed Musabbeh. "Multi-dimensional sustainability framework for service organisations in the GCC countries." Thesis, Brunel University, 2014. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/10589.

Full text
Abstract:
Sustainability in the business context seeks to create long-term value by seizing the opportunities and overcoming the challenges of simultaneously addressing the organization’s economic, environmental and social responsibilities. Several sustainability models and frameworks have been put forward over the past three decades, aiming at helping organizations embed sustainability at the core of their businesses. Their relevancy and applicability are significant, particularly for the manufacturing sector and the overall value chain, even though service organizations are equally important stakeholders in this process. The raising interest to promote sustainability-focused practices, processes and policies in organizations in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) region, particularly across the service sector, have contributed to define the goal of this research, namely: to establish the main drivers and challenges faced by local service organizations to embed sustainability at the core of their business strategy and practice, in order to develop an innovative multi-dimensional sustainability framework specifically adapted to the service sector in the GCC countries’ socio-cultural and economic environment. For this purpose, a research path was followed which included: comparative critical analysis of the leading organizational sustainability frameworks and maturity models; an empirical evaluation of their relevancy in the particular context of GCC countries; and primary research to confirm the perceived applied research gap and to evaluate the feasibility and relevancy of putting forward a sector specific framework. The outcome of this research is an innovative multi-dimensional sustainability framework for service sector organizations in the GCC region, which will provide stronger guidance on how to select and implement the most relevant sustainability aspects within the local service sector businesses, thus allowing them to develop better sustainability-focused policies and practices in the workplace. This framework will also contribute to academic community by opening new views on how sustainability is perceived and what adjustments are needed for it to work in the service sector in the context of GCC countries. This framework can later on be extended to other countries of the MENA region, where existing sustainability models and frameworks would not be fit for purpose. The framework hereby proposed was validated by combining the quantitative research and qualitative data collection and analysis using a combined positivist and interpretive case study strategy based on carefully selected cases across the service sector in the GCC countries. The measurable success of this framework will be the time it will take to reach a significant number of service sector organizations in the GCC countries that achieve the ideal balance between their social, economic and environmental dimensions with few constraints, thus becoming potential leaders of change for a more sustainable and inclusive successful future.

Abstract:
In this study, we investigate whether CSR strategies affect the company's ability to access external capital by reducing its capital constraints. Explained, the study aims at explaining the relationship between CSR performance and capital constrains, as well as between CSR dimensions and capital constrains. Can an increased CSR performance reduce capital constrains, increase access to capital, which in turn leads to greater opportunities to make profitable investments and thus create value for the company? Previous research has stopped finding that CSR is creating value and increases the company's financial performance, but few reports go further and explain how the value is created or why the financial performance is increasing. We take a further step and ask why value is created.

Lai, Kevin, and Lina Sundman. "Hållbarhetsintegrering i tre dimensioner : En studie av Scanias hållbarhetsarbete." Thesis, KTH, Integrerad produktutveckling, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-297970.

Full text
Abstract:
Integration of sustainability is becoming more important for product development companies. But sustainability is not all about finding climate-smart solutions. For companies to be competitive in the market and attractive employers, they need to integrate the three sustainability aspects: ecological-,economic- and social sustainability. The need to integrate sustainability in the product development process without any of the aspects being overshadowed. Scania is a global manufacturer of heavy vehicles with a big focus on integrations of sustainability. They have a number of ongoing projects involving developing new climate-smart auto trucks. This study aims to get an insight of Scania, if it manages to integrate all the aspects of sustainability in their product development process and in such cases how they work to accomplish this. This study is based on a literature- and empirical study. The literature study mainly consists of scientific articles as well as some course literature from the three first years of the Master of Science inengineering, with majors in mechanical engineering and design and product realization at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). The empirical study consists of interviews with four respondents, three representatives from Scania and one representing the department of Sustainable Production Development at KTH. The study shows that Scania succeeds in integrating all three sustainability aspects in their product development process, however, it is difficult for the company to integrate all of the aspects to the same extent. In addition, internal and external social sustainability do not receive the same focus. The study also shows that integrating one aspect may effect the other two aspects in a positive manner. In order to integrate all three aspects of sustainability, it is important to establish a plan for how to manage the integration and also try to fulfill the desires and needs of all the stakeholders.

Abstract:
In the shift towards a sustainable society, there have been varying interpretations of what this will mean for the social sphere. Using the parameters for social sustainability presented in the framework for strategic sustainable development (FSSD), this research sought to assist sustainability practitioners in identifying and eliminating the creation of or contribution to barriers that undermine the individual’s capacity to meet their needs. In doing so, the researchers explored the processes of social systems and employed a systems thinking perspective to examine how an organization could, through the intentional structuring of its processes, work to eliminate their contributions to arriers. From this research, characteristics of processes that move an organization towards socially sustainable development were identified as cooperation, transparency, openness, inclusiveness and involvement, around which a guidebook was developed to promote organizational reflection and examination of processes in regards to these characteristics and fundamental human needs.
This thesis aims to provide useful guidance for transforming organizational processes to better reflect a consideration of human needs. It seeks to address structures which act as barriers to the capacity of people to actualize their needs, and proposes a set of characteristics of processes that help to eliminate these barriers.

Abstract:
Social sustainability is a multidimensional concept in which safety is one of the dimensions, and is an important factor in creating a good quality of life. The public space is a key factor in a healthy and well-functioning city. A good environment is a source for motivating citizens to better health and wellness. Public space also has a great impact on safety, good urban planning is essential to create a good environment to live in. High level of safety also creates the conditions for achieving socially sustainable development. The driving forces behind this study is that the public space is an important place where everybody will be welcomed and feel safe. The public space creates the opportunity for social relations, exchange of knowledge and constitute an important function in society. The publicspace should protect and promote the citizen, and the citizen must take care and show respect for the public space. Thus, this study aims to investigate young people's experience of publicspace in relation to social sustainability and safety. The method used in the study is a quantitative approach, questionnaires have been distributed to high school students in Stenungssund. The survey ended with the possibility for respondents to mark on a map of Stenungsund the places they feel secure, insecure and like. The results of the study show that young people in Stenungsund generally feel safe in public spaces. However, there are differences between how girls and boys experience safety. Boys feel increasingly confident than girls do. Students in different grades also tend to experience safety differently. The markings on the map thus showed a common understanding of what places are experienced as both secure, insecure and liked.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT   Title: Sustainability performance and corporate tax: Complement or substitute? - A quantitative study of public European companies   Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration   Author: Nicklas Johansson   Supervisor: Jan Svanberg   Date: 2017 - January   Aim: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important issue for many of the company's stakeholders, not least society. How companies regard corporate tax as part of this responsibility is therefore an important issue as the state's tax revenues contribute to the welfare of society. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between CSR and European companies' effective tax rate, partly based on total CSR performance as well as dimensions of CSR.   Method: The study is based on a positivistic research philosophy and a deductive approach. The study also has a quantitative strategy and a longitudinal design for collecting secondary data from the Thomson Reuters database Datastream for the years 2011-2016. The sample consists of 465 public European companies for which data were analyzed by multiple regression analyzes in the IBM SPSS statistics program.   Result & conclusions: The study's results indicate a negative relationship between total CSR performance and corporate tax, but this connection is driven by the stronger impact of CSR activities in the environmental dimension relative to the positive impact of CSR activities in the social dimension. The conclusion is that CSR and corporate tax can both be substitutes and complementary to each other. CSR activities within the environmental dimension are used as substitutes for corporate tax while corporate tax is considered as a complement to CSR in the social dimension.   Suggestions for future research: When the relationships were found to differ between different dimensions, future research should not be based on a single measure of CSR, but go into more detail on the categories and indicators that build the dimensions. There may also be differences between industries and countries, so it would be interesting with studies that examine the relationship within each industry and country in Europe.   Contribution of the thesis: The study contributes to filling the gap of research that exists for European companies on the relationship between CSR and corporate taxation and to investigate the relationship at the dimensional level of CSR. The study also contributes to the theory of CSR and corporate taxation as substitutes, complements or independent activities. Finally, the study can increase understanding of how companies' CSR and tax behavior relate to government agencies and organizations involved in legislation and the establishment of guidelines for sustainability reporting.   Keywords: ETR, Corporate Tax, Tax Payments, CSR, ESG, Social Responsibility, Sustainability, Environmental Dimension, Social Dimension and Corporate Governance Dimension.

Abstract:
It is difficult to imagine life without changes influenced by technology and innovation, which are characteristic of the era in which we live, with changes that, albeit always present throughout the history of mankind, are today presented as challenges for companies, organisations and governments, which pursue sustainable development, that is, prudent use of resources for the benefit of humans and the ecosystem around us, in a way that makes available such resources today and into the future. Unfortunately, the outcome of business innovation practices that are at the centre of these processes have resulted in the exclusion of four billion segment of the population comprising low-income groups in developing countries, also in degradation of natural resources, climate change, social inequality and excessive consumption of resources, because perhaps what was once good and innovative is now no longer so. In this context, debates have emerged and caught the attention of researchers and practitioners about how companies could innovate in a way that promotes sustainable development, which comes from "innovation", but also it to be "responsible". Responsible innovation (RI) deepens the relationship between science and society, which seeks for innovation under a democratic governance framework to be better integrated into society to ensure its contribution and benefits are effective. But how does responsible innovation in industry happen? In other words, in terms of one of the most widely used definitions in the academic context, “responsible innovation means taking care of the future through collective stewardship of science and innovation in the present”. Although this last definition acknowledged responsible innovation as a practice closely related to sustainability, the way in which its integration happen into industry is still in its infancy, and even more so when it comes from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This discussion remains one of the major research gaps analysed in this thesis. Moreover, in order to survive in a global and highly competitive environment, SMEs seek to achieve sustainable development through technological innovations. 3D printing (3DP) holds substantial promise for sustainability and the creation of a circular economy. Although 3D printing does not have a real sense of poverty alleviation in developing countries, has the potential to be a transformative alternative to the local production and consumption system. Manufacturing requires an understanding of local cultural issues that affect the management and organizational practices on which the competitiveness of enterprises is based. In that sense, once the decision is made to use a technology, it must be adopted and implemented. However, 3D printing, in that sense, is currently in the early stages of adoption especially from the perspective of small and medium enterprises. Therefore, in order to strengthen this area of research, this dissertation presents a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing the adoption of 3D printing by different types of SMEs. This analysis is therefore another of the main topics analysed in this thesis. Regarding the main topics of this thesis, unawareness of the potential value of responsible innovation for SMEs with the common objective of reaching sustainability, that generates economic benefits, but also generate social value connected to the global challenges of society. Even more so in a developing country, such as Bolivia, means once again being left out of an important socio-economic development, in a society that is marginal to what is going to happen. Bolivia has been undergoing a major boom period in recent years due to the price of oil and its derivatives, which has led to one of the best GDP per capita indices in Latin America, but despite these indicators, it is one of the poorest countries in the region with one of the highest indices of inequality, which could increase levels of poverty and extreme poverty, which in 2019 were 37.2% and 12.9% respectively (INE, 2019). These are part of the greatest challenges that Bolivia still faces. Thus, the third analysis for understanding the spread of responsible innovation is through corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. This understanding is crucial for SMEs because, CSR seems to have a relevant capability of promoting responsible innovation, in particular resulting from collaboration with other stakeholders. Based on the existing literature, this dissertation proposes three different analyses. The first empirical study explores the key factors that determine the adoption of 3DP technology by SMEs in Arizona in the United States. Their results suggest that factors such as relative advantage, integration, readiness, managerial obstacles, and in turn, external collaboration foster the adoption of 3DP. The second study deals with a systematic literature review to develop a conceptual model for responsible innovation and its relationship with business performance through corporate social responsibility and sustainable innovation practices. The last one empirical study focuses on explore whether CSR practices towards stakeholders promotes RI and financial performance, findings suggest that the relationship between CSR and financial performance mediated by responsible innovation was positive but weak. Finally, the results of this dissertation join the emerging debate on responsible innovation and its application in SMEs. The focus is on SMEs because they represent 98% of the companies in the world. Their achievements have the potential to generate a major impact on the country's economy and society. Furthermore, this dissertation could also help researchers and practitioners to new insights to address responsible innovation for society, with society and for sustainable development.

Abstract:
Title:  Do new companies take the same responsibility for our environment and community as established companies? A quantitative study of the connection between CSR and initial public offerings compared to established companies.  Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor´s Degree in Business Administration Author: Alexander Gunnari and Andreas Larsson Supervisor: Jan Svanberg Date: 2020 – May Aim: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) have the past decades increased to meet expectations and demands of both the company’s stakeholders and the community at large. During the 2000s until today we have seen an increasing number of companies that seeks capital by an initial public offering on a stock exchange. Do these new listed companies take as much responsibilities as older more established companies? The aim is to investigate the connection between CSR and time on stock exchange for listed companies in the EU. Further will the connections between the three dimensions of CSR, environment, social and governance be investigated separately against listed time on the stock market.  Method: The study is based on a positivistic research philosophy and a hypothetico-deductive approach. The study has designed four hypothesis that undergo an empirical review. Secondary data is collected from the database Thomson Reuters Datastream to answer these hypotheses. The sample consist of 478 publicly traded companies in the EU. The statistical software platform SPSS have been used to analyze the sample.  Result & Conclusions: The study gives proof of the hypothesis that CSR measured as ESG score, social and environmental have a positive connection with the company's time on a stock exchange. The longer a company has been listed on a stock exchange the higher the scores are to be expected. The fourth hypothesis, m governance, does not show statistic significance against listed time. The conclusion is that a company´s listed time have a positive impact on CSR.  Contribution of the thesis: This study provides evidence for that the longer a company have been listed on a stock exchange, the more work is to be expected in CSR, which leads to higher ESG score. The contribution can be of use in both practical and theoretical ways for several stakeholders and enables these to see indications in cases where something does not seem right. Suggestions for future research: This study opens for continued research in many aspects. There are notable differences in for instance the sectors and countries. Maybe a more hands-on approach to qualitative investigate CSR and the initial public offering with its prospects. Key words: CSR, ESG, Initial public offering, Time perspective, Sustainability, Social dimension, Environmental dimension and Governance dimension.

The concept of sustainable tourism underwent a series of transformations until it came to the present proposal that all kinds of tourism may have sustainability as an objective. The subject of the present survey is the kind of hotel business known as resorts, which has been traditionally viewed as socially unsustainable. And its objective is to explore the ways in which this segment of the hotel industry has been responding to the new, wider concept of sustainable tourism. To achieve this objective, a two-dimensional survey was carried out. The first one provided a framework to assess the understanding of the concept of sustainable tourism by the beach resorts in Brasil. It also explored the ways in which this concept has been operationalized by those resorts management. The second dimension of the survey further explored these issues in a group of resorts located in the northern coast of Bahia (Praia do Forte Ecoresort and Costa do Sauípe Complex) as well the perception of their impact by the local communities. The results show that the resorts have a good understanding of the concept of sustainable tourism but they have difficulties operationalizing it. In addition to a lack of information and support, the resorts do not have management tools to promote sustainability, although it is a part of the strategic policies of all of them. Therefore, the survey evidenced a wide gap between speech and practice concerning tourism sustainability. Although the resorts are interested in integrating the local communities into their businesses, their actions are typically punctual and assistencialist resulting in small – if any – positive changes in the living conditions of the local communities. As is common in other industries, the resorts’ involvement with sustainability is separated from the business operations and, in spite of their concern, the results for the social aspect of sustainability are insignificant. The case studies showed that the results achieved by the Praia do Forte Ecoresort are the closest to the aspirations of the communities that search their development through tourism. In spite of some significant initiatives by the Costa do Sauípe Complex, up to these days, its performance can not be considered successful in terms of the social dimension of sustainability. The survey identified some variables that seem to affect the results of the resorts’ incentives to promote the social dimension of sustainability in the communities where they are located.

Abstract:
The Subject evidences the importance of the proposition of indicators of sustainable development for Agricultural Nestings, with the objective to support of the decisions of the governmental bodies and managers of a general form, in the implantation, accompaniment, support and evaluation to the implanted projects and to be implanted. Through the historical analysis of the brazilian agrarian question and the chosen theorical landmarks: the indicators of sustainable development; and family agriculture, was possible to know the theoretical structure witch involves the subject. Regarding the indicators of sustainable development it was proceeded a research concerning it s evolution, identifying the main studies about: the work of construction indicators of sustainable development led by the Commission for Sustainable Development CDS, of the United Nations; indicators of sustainable development Brazil 2004, of the IBGE; of the Balaton Group (Donella Meadows and others), in the Triângulo de Daly ; of the Bossel project; of the Monet model of Switzerland; and, the total socio-ecologial system, of the CEPAL. The boarding of the theorical landmark Familiar Agriculture included the analysis of some definitions and it s categories and identified the types, the sizes and the generated income for the familiar agriculturists in Brazil. The field research was carried through on two agricultural nestings (Farm Amoras and Farm Santa Amália e Santos Apóstolos) both managed by the Land and Agrarian Reformation Institute of Alagoas ITERAL. In the scope of the research we have observed characterization of the nestings, the profile of seated and the dynamics of the nestings, the social world of the seated, the production of the nestings and their impacts, the access to technology and to credit and the characteristics of the generated income. The proposition of the indicators of sustainable development to rural nestings followed the ordained landmark considered by the Commission of Sustainable Development CDS, of the United Nations and followed, in Brazil, by the IBGE, which organizes the indicators on four dimensions of sustainability: Environmental, Social, Economic and Institutional. The indicators proposed reach a total of sixty-two, including twenty-three environmental indicators, twenty-one social indicators, thirteen economical indicators and five institutional indicators. The indicators are also classified, by the model of the Cooperation and Economic Development Organization OCDE, as being Pressure Condition Reply PER. Finally, are identified thirteen indicators considered synthesis, in the total ambit of the indicators.

This research presents an assessment of the strategic dimensions to propose an index of sustainable additional value for the evaluation of aluminum recycling projects. For this purpose, methods of qualitative type was used with literature review of models, dimensions and sustainability indicators most used by companies, to applying quantitative research, from the analysis of sustainability reports and the actual practices of benchmarking aluminum recycling market. The fuzzy method complements research on observation and verification of the behavior of environmental indicators, economic, social and normative, front of increasing additions of recycled content in the final product. The conclusions of the application of qualitative methods, quantitative and fuzzy, signal an important dynamic role of the social dimension of the model for adding value and sustainability to the processes of reverse logistics aluminum. The addition of the normative dimension to the proposed model, allows researchers, questions and prospects of future studies to identify strategies, standards and parameters of the companies in the inclusion of recycling at the end of life product cycle

Abstract:
The discussion of a ‘cultural’ dimension of sustainability has been brought forward in sustainable development and in particular sustainable urban development (SUD) in the last three decades. Despite both an advancement of scientific discourse and advocacy through international organisations, empirical examples discussing explicitly leadership and organisation for implementation of culture in SUD are still rare. Through the lens of leadership and organisation, important questions regarding norms, values and behavior are being addressed that provide the foundation for future development. To advance empirical knowledge in the described field, the thesis takes a look at the city of Malmö in the form of a case study. In Malmö, culture has been assigned an important and all-encompassing role in the city’s organisation and sustainable development plan, manifested through a local policy, the so called ‘Culture Strategy’. This in-depth study aims at understanding the practical application of culture in SUD, given a theoretical framework including the possible roles of culture in SUD and the meanings of creative organisation and leadership in a neoliberal urban context. It is followed by a comprehensive analysis of a range of official documents and eight semi- structured interviews. Asking for the communication of visions and actors’ roles and understandings of culture in relation to practices and organisational structures, the thesis shows that the cultural strategy so far has a dual function as a catalyst and representative for the discussion of culture in SUD. Over-departmentalisation and a lack of communication present hinders for organisational change and the potential of development through learning is not given adequate space and time so far. In conclusion, the municipal organisation must detach from the idea to control, and rather enable ‘spaces’ for diverse actors to collectively employ creativity and allow for an experimental process to unfold.

Abstract:
This study called into question the rationale and methods used by researchers used to measure levels of social capital, particularly Putnam (1995), Paxton (1999), and Park (2006). A central purpose to this study was to partially replicate and extend the work of Park, who theoretically derived four dimensions of social capital. I develop measures of each dimension and then regress each on the variables of age, sex, race, ethnicity, marital status, education, income, and religiosity. This created four sets of outcomes from which I drew conclusions about the dimensionality of the social capital concept. Based on the low percentage of variance explained by the models and the fact that many coefficients reverse signs from one model to the next, I conclude that these dimensions do not represent four parts of a single, underlying construct. This was counter to both Paxton and Park's conclusions. The results of this study also offer a way to examine the effects of subgroups on each dimension. In addition, Park's hypothesis of “coffeeing together” was tested and found to be inconsistent with the descriptive results. Recommendations were made for future applications of social capital research and an alternative hypothesis was cited as a promising way to conduct subsequent studies.

Jensen, Nathan. "Exploring the Relationships Between Livelihood Dimensions and Socio-ecological Resilience in the Bolivian Altiplano." Thesis, University of Missouri - Columbia, 2019. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=13850739.

Abstract:

Households in the Bolivian Altiplano construct their livelihood strategies in a system marked by changing climate and volatile social systems. The strategies that they choose must work to decrease the household‘s vulnerability to shocks, such as drought and frost, and increase its ability to adapt to longer term changes, for instance the affects of globalization. Their strategies may also influence the resilience of their community and environment, either increasing or decreasing the likelihood of catastrophe.

This research uses canonical correlation analysis to analyze survey data collected from 330 rural households in two regions of the Bolivian Altiplano. It examines the impact that dominant livelihood strategies have on the resilience of the household and its socio-ecological environment. The analysis shows that access to land and lifecycle are two household characteristics most highly associated with resilience; that diversification into labor markets often works towards increasing resilience; and that many households use livestock as an insurance mechanism. The results suggest that policies that work towards increasing crop yields and reducing livestock loss in the face of climate change could effectively target the households that are most vulnerable. Programs that include transfer payments to older households for providing services, such as increasing ecosystem resilience by placing land in fallow, could reduce the negative impact of lifecycle experienced by many across both regions.

Abstract:
Considering the lack of clear guidance regarding the way business could include social sustainability into their operations, the objective of this research project was to study the functionality of social sustainability tools which are used worldwide by business practitioners and assess how useful these tools are to overcome barriers related with social aspects of sustainability as they are described in the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD): health, influence, competence, impartiality and meaning-making. A qualitative method analysis was selected, based upon direct content analysis. Elements from the 5 Level Framework (5LF) and the FSSD were used for designing two review processes to analyse selected social sustainability tools. The 5LF is useful for planning in complex systems, while the FSSD is designed to address complex challenges and recognize opportunities which aim to sustainability. The findings from the research show which tools, based on their functionality, can help a company move towards sustainability and illustrate how they address different social sustainability aspects. Based on these findings, recommendations were developed which included key features of the selected social sustainability tools. These recommendations could help business practitioners to choose the most appropriate tool for specific business context depending on the company’s needs.

Green, Claire Catherine. "Authentic existence : its individual and social dimensions." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/41442.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to provide an explication and analysis of the existential concept of authentic existence, through an examination of Sartre, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Buber. It is primarily Sartre's treatment of authenticity, only implicit in his writings, which this thesis seeks both to make explicit and to defend. The positions of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Buber are each used to compare or contrast with key aspects of Sartre's concept of authentic existence, in order to establish the strengths and weaknesses of the Sartrean position. Sartre's concept of individual authenticity rests upon an ethics designed to liberate the individual from living in 'bad faith' by means of a reflective comprehension of the nature of human reality. It is an ethics of self-recovery or authentic existence, having as its ideal the development of the morally autonomous individual who chooses to take freedom as his ultimate value. Sartre also maintains that authenticity requires that we take the freedom of others, as well as our own, as our goal. At the same time, however, his discussion of relations with others in Being and Nothingness is a profoundly negative one, which contends that conflict is the original meaning of 'being-for-others'. It will be argued that Sartre's theory of groups in Critique of Dialectical Reason provides an account of how positive social relations are indeed possible within the parameters of his ontology. The theory of groups thus renders intelligible that aspect of his concept of authentic existence which requires of us common action on behalf of the freedom of all. Finally, Sartre's sociopolitical ideal, or that towards which authentic action is ultimately directed, is identified as a 'direct democracy'. Such a community would be the concrete embodiment of a free society of disalienated individuals mutually choosing to promote each other's freedom.

Innovation is considered one of the key capabilities required for organizations to achieve success. Previous research has claimed that social capital influences innovation capabilities, yet not the extent of its dimensions (cognitive, relational and structural). This study addressed this research gap by a survey performed among ANPEI (Research and Development Nacional Association of Innovative Companies) members, specifically innovation managers from Brazilian and multinational companies from several sectors, operating in Brasil. 440 innovation managers from 220 companies during the period from December/2016 and January/2017 participated. An instrument with 24 items was designed to measure the independent and dependent variables. A web-based survey was created on QuestionPro Platform, to disseminate the survey through a link and collect data easily. The software SmartPLS 3 was used to treat the data as main analysis tool. It estimates PLS path models for the empirical validation of Theoretical model. The results showed that both cognitive, relational and structural dimensions of social capital affect positvelly the generation of innovation capability, but we found out that the structural social capital has a higher impact on the generation of innovation capability. We verified that R&D also affects positevly in the generation of Innovation Capability.

Abstract:
This study was prompted by my feelings of ignorance and insecurity as a newly approved foster carer welcoming a traumatised five year old child in to our home. What I perceived to be an inadequate preparation for the everyday practicalities of fostering was exacerbated by the lack of communication between and amongst social workers and foster carers. Yet at study days, I observed that experienced foster carers appeared to have acquired a practice wisdom that I was lacking and unable to access. As a result, my initial questions were as follows. Do experienced foster carers acquire a tacit understanding of their practice in caring for vulnerable and possibly damaged children? Does this understanding relate to known theories in such a way that allows non-specialised or non-treatment foster care to provide a therapeutic intervention for Looked After and Accommodated Children? In order to structure this enquiry, I looked initially to Nussbaum’s (1997) Capabilities Approach, an approach that asks the question: ‘What is this person able to do and to be?’(Nussbaum 2011:21). I adapted this question to: ‘what is it that foster carers do and how can they make a difference in the lives of Looked After and Accommodated children?’. For an individual to use their capabilities to their fullest extent requires the cultivation of their ‘capacities’, namely critical self-examination, connectedness with the world, narrative imagination and scientific understanding, those qualities which enable a person to flourish (Nussbaum, 2011). I used these capacities to construct a conceptual framework for the study. In order to connect with the world of care for children, I conducted ten semi-structured interviews with foster carers and, from that data, I created narratives related to specific areas of care, some of which I had identified a priori and others which I derived from the data. These narratives are explored in relation to current policies and relevant research in an endeavour to identify themes, patterns and contradictions. From this exploration, the key themes of care and caring, aspects of recovery from trauma, and theories of human development, including those of attachment, resilience and well-being, were identified and explored. The narratives and their discussion raise further questions with regards to the moral, political and legal landscape of foster care, my personal positioning in regards to my role, current constructs of care and the potential therapeutic contribution of non-specialised foster carers. Finally, I propose a new form of preparation for foster carers, ‘Learning to Foster’ as a synthesis of my data, which includes recommendations from the National Foster Care Review (LACSIG, 2013). Concluding the study, I suggest that foster carers have the capacity to provide therapeutic interventions for Looked After and Accommodated Children, but that their capability to do so is reduced by the current practices of social work systems. In order to enhance the contributions that foster carers can make, I suggest that dialogue between foster carers, social workers and managers needs to occur and to be strengthened. With the understanding I have gained from undertaking this study, promoting that dialogue will be my next endeavour.

Abstract:
The degradation of the ecological and social systems has largely resulted from human activities that deplete natural resources and undermine human needs in society. Traditional business culture, driven mainly by profit maximization, is a factor that has worsened this sustainability challenge. Social enterprises (SEs) are a form of business that hold the potential to help make the transition towards a sustainable society. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, it explores SE contributions to creating a sustainable social system. Second, it examines how SEs exhibit the dimensions of trustworthiness, leading to trusting relationships in society. Social sustainability principles (SSPs) define social sustainability and are drawn from the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development. They are used as a foundation for identifying SE contributions. The researchers draw on experiences from social entrepreneurs and experts in the field of social entrepreneurship. SEs contribute at two levels: the individual level and the societal level. They break down barriers to the SSPs and provide opportunities to individuals with respect to the five principles. SEs operate based on a culture of impartiality and create opportunities for meaning for individuals in their target groups. They consistently take leaps of faith, believing in the trustworthiness of those who are otherwise deemed untrustworthy.

Barbanti, Olympio. "Urban dimensions in rural livelihoods : implications for grassroots development and sustainability in the Brazilian Amazon." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2865/.

Full text
Abstract:
Analyses of development in the Brazilian Amazon have concentrated largely on two frameworks. Modernisation approaches interpret the issue in terms of an urban sector irradiating progress into the rural, and have informed most official intervention policy in the region, as was the case with development poles and infrastructure building. Marxist-based frameworks, which have filled most of the literature and inspired the action of social movements and non-governmental organisations, focus on the perverse impacts of capitalist penetration of the countryside. These organisations tend to influence the process of agricultural transition by providing a variable combination of both poverty alleviation welfare-type assistance as well as the means for improving social and political participation through empowerment. In both modernisation and Marxist frameworks, however, "rural" and "urban" appear as totally separate sectors, and therefore the relationships established by rural people in urban areas, and vice-versa, are not scrutinised. From the end of the 1980s, actor-oriented research gained momentum and helped to reveal diversity in local development circumstances. This thesis aims at contributing to the analysis of diversity by highlighting the importance of urban dimensions in the livelihoods of rural producers. This study shows that some 61 per cent of the Legal Amazonian population is now urban, and argues that in today's Amazonia one can not address rural development properly if rural-urban linkages are not taken into account. It is also argued that the interactions maintained by peasants with urban areas allow for the strengthening and diversification of their sources of livelihood. This phenomenon challenges the view of peasants as exclusively subsumed to capital, but also questions the modernisation view of conflict-free, rural-urban relations. Such improvements in rural livelihoods are possible due to the dynamics of local institutions and capitalism. Having expanded their sources of livelihood into urban areas, rural producers become a target for agencies that support sustainable rural development projects, which seek to finance grassroots movements that can implement income-generating activities in a participatory fashion, free from political coercion. The Frutos do Cerrado, a project supported by the PP-G7 Pilot Programme to Conserve the Brazilian Rain Forest, has been selected as a case study. It is argued that programmes such as the PP-G7 should consider the beneficiaries' capacity to commit themselves and their households to the project's aims, and to examine the compatibility of the project with the urban dimensions present in their livelihoods. Theoretical implications of this analysis concern the weakness of grand theories in adequately explaining the dynamics of livelihood strategies, and the developmental roles played by capital and urban areas in contemporary Amazonia.

Berglund, Amanda, and Marie Svanteson. "Sustainable E-commerce : How to integrate the dimensions of sustainability within the e-commerce sector." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Industriell ekonomi, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-26869.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate how the three dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) can be integrated within the e-commerce sector to make it more sustainable. Methods: Firstly, a literary research was conducted to get an overall picture of the chosen topic for the study, which later was elaborated into a literature framework. Secondly, two case studies were conducted in order to collect empirical data. The data was collected through interviews, where a total of three interviews was conducted. The literature framework and the multiple case studies were then cross-analyzed with each other. Findings: Throughout the thesis several trade-offs regarding the three dimensions of sustainability have been identified and evaluated, and they are all clearly presented in a compiled table. The findings also indicates that the sustainable actions a company may make needs to be thoroughly communicated through their websites since the e-commerce disables the face-to-face interactions. It is of great importance for companies to increase the consumer awareness and knowledge in order to motivate them in to being sustainable. Theoretical Contribution: This thesis contributes to science by the unification of the e-commerce and the three dimensions of sustainability. The study thus merge science with empirics to create a deeper knowledge and contribute to the body of literature with a compiled table of trade-offs. Practical Contribution: Practitioners will be enlightened of the importance of all the three dimensions of sustainability, and they will understand the concept and events of trade-offs for sustainability when working within e-commerce. The thesis also provides insight for companies to learn how very important it is with better communication about sustainability factors to its consumers. Limitations: This study is delimited to the e-commerce connected to business to consumer (B2C). The study will only involve Swedish companies and will not investigate them on an intra-organizational level. They will be treated as “black boxes”, as the focus only will be on the three dimensions of sustainability in relation to e-commerce, and not any organizational structures or consumers in detail.

GALAPIA, LEYTON JARED. "SOCIAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS OF THE DRUG WAR." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/612931.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper describes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing the many problems the drug war has given rise to. Presented first is a brief summary of the histories of six drugs: Alcohol, Tobacco, Vicodin, Cannabis, Cocaine, and Heroin. Second, data on the physiological effects of these drugs is given. After analysis of this evidence, the conclusion is reached that current U.S. drug policy is partially informed by long-standing cultural biases, and is ultimately inconsistent. Plan Colombia and the prison industrial complex are used as case studies to support this claim. Finally, Portuguese drug policy is described in order to showcase one successful set of drug laws that is dissimilar to that in the U.S.

Gronemeyer, Wiebke. "The curatorial complex : social dimensions of knowledge production." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/15878/.

Full text
Abstract:
My research explores whether and in what ways curatorial practices assume a social function. By analysing how artistic and curatorial practices can activate processes and generate structures that facilitate dialogical spaces of negotiation between curators, artists and their publics, this research argues for an intrinsic social dimension to forms of knowledge production in the curated encounter. Point of departure for my research are the following examples: (1) Michael Fullerton’s exhibition Columbia (2010), Chisenhale Gallery, London; (2) The Potosí Principle (2010), HKW, Berlin; (3) Unitednationsplaza (2006-2007), a discursive art project organised by Anton Vidokle; (4) Former West (2008-2016), a multidimensional art research project coordinated by BAK, Utrecht. These examples are discussed on the backdrop of the continuous dematerialisation of practices in the expanded field of the curatorial. Rather than furthering the construction of an opposition between the “curatorial” and curating as exhibition-making, my research elaborates on the differences of exhibitionary, discursive, and performative forms of engagement arguing for a diversification of the exhibition as a medium of practice, not its dismissal. A central claim of this thesis is to perceive the exhibition as a space of action for public engagement beyond spectatorship and the production of sociality beyond hosting relations. Contextualised by a discussion of terminologies in social theory, such as communication, practice and sociality, this thesis develops a model of practice applicable to curating that operates self-reflexively with regard to the social, political and cultural conditions it is formed by. My research argues against an understanding of curatorial practices as a form of exhibiting and collecting the views and values belonging to a particular society, but claims a notion of practice that fosters the creation of sociality as an embodied form of knowledge production whose material quality is as important as its discursive capacity for emergence and enquiry.
