Abstract:
The present thesis was dedicated to examining individuals’ performance on a low-level reaching task conducted under social-interactive conditions. In this paradigm named Social Inhibition of Return (social IOR) two individuals, sitting opposite each other take turns to respond to targets appearing on either side of a visual display. Typical results reveal that reaction times are longer when responses are directed to where the co-actor just responded. Despite being fairly simple, this task is intriguing to examine as it potentially incorporates features of both an inhibition of return (IOR) eff

Social attention refers to the ability, which generally characterizes human beings as well as other animal species, to orient attentional resources in response to spatial cues provided by other individuals. These spatial cues are typically represented by gaze direction, head direction, and body orientation. This thesis focused mainly on the role that some social variables play in modulating this ability. In Chapter 1, the concept of social attention and its relevance in regulating social interactions are discussed. After that, in Chapter 2, I present four studies in which I have employed the

The present study was designed to look at inhibition of return within a schizophrenic population for the first time. Inhibition of return is an attentional phenomenon that has been studied with a number of populations, and has been shown to be present in normal individuals. Against a plethora of visual input, visual attention filters and selects relevant information and disengages from irrelevant items. One possible mechanism to enable disengagement is reflected in inhibition of return (IOR), the finding that previously visited locations are responded to slower than locations that have not been investigated before. In line with the proposal that IOR reflects a mechanism to facilitate visual search, evidence suggests that IOR is coded in space-based (“spatiotopic”) coordinates, despite the largely retina-based (“retinotopic”) coding scheme of the visual system. Inhibition of return (IOR) is a cognitive mechanism to bias attention from returning to previously engaged items. While aging models have proposed deficits within select inhibitory domains, older adults have demonstrated preserved IOR functioning in previous studies. Both young and older adults produced significant location-based IOR in static and dynamic paradigms. In contrast, young adults produced object-based IOR in a dynamic paradigm, whereas

Orienting processing resources towards a peripheral region of a display, by means of an exogenous cue, produces a biphasic effect on subsequent target detection. Intially response latency is facilitated, but increasing the SOA to 300 ms or greater results in slower detection, and this is known as the inhibition of return (IOR) effect. Initially this inhibitory effect was thought to bias attention against returning to a previously attended location but subsequent work demonstrated that it can also be associated with an object when motion is utilised to dissociate the two effects. The term Inhibition of Return (IOR) describes a performance decrement for stimuli appearing at a recently attended location. It has been hypothesized that one, possibly two, components contribute to the IOR effect: an attentional component and a motor component. Using the fixation offset effect (FOE), which can facilitate oculomotor response execution, as a measure of a motor contribution to the IOR effect, we show that the FOE and IOR interact, although not in the manner observed previously.

Abstract:
First, although there is some evidence suggesting IOR influences nonspatial attribute-based visual search, the effects observed have been small and inconsistent, have not followed the same time course as more standard IOR, and there is some evidence that the effect may depend on presenting a "neutral attractor" between the cue and target. In Experiments 1(1a,1b) and Experiment 2(2a), participants ii demonstrated a robust color-, and shape-based inhibitory effect that, unlike previous findings, followed a time course similar to that for location-based IOR. Moreover, the effect does not seem to

Abstract:
In visual spatial-cueing experiments with uninformative peripheral cues, reaction time to cued-location targets is facilitated (relative to that for targets at uncued-locations) at short cue-target intervals and inhibited at longer intervals. Posner, Rafal, Choate and Vaughan (1985) labeled this inhibitory effect Inhibition of Return (IOR) and proposed that it serves to bias the visual system to orient towards new locations. This proposal remains a popular topic of debate and no consensus has yet been reached regarding the mechanisms responsible for producing IOR. The present project utilized

Abstract:
Inhibition of return (IOR) is a cognitive phenomenon whereby reaction times (RTs) are slower to cued relative to uncued targets at cue-target onset asynchronies (CTOAs) greater than approximately 300 ms. One important theory of IOR proposes that there are two mutually exclusive forms of IOR, with an attentional/perceptual form arising when the oculomotor system is actively suppressed, and a motoric form arising when it is engaged (Taylor & Klein, 2000). Other theories propose that IOR is the result of multiple, additive neural mechanisms (Abrams & Dobkin, 1994). Here, we have performed computa
