Abstract:
We characterize the behavior and the social structures appearing from a model of general social interaction proposed by Sakoda. The model consists of two interacting populations in a two-dimensional periodic lattice with empty sites. It contemplates a set of simple rules that combine attitudes, ranges of interactions, and movement decisions. We analyze the evolution of the 45 different interaction rules via a Potts-like energy function which drives the system irreversibly to an equilibrium or a steady state. We discuss the robustness of the social structures, dynamical behaviors, and the exist

A new mean field statistical mechanics model of two interacting groups of spins is introduced, and the phase transition is studied in terms of their relative size. A jump of the average magnetization is found for large values of the mutual interaction when the relative percentage of the two populations crosses a critical threshold. It is shown how the critical percentage depends on internal interactions and on the initial magnetizations. The model is interpreted as a prototype of resident-immigrant cultural interaction, and conclusions from the social sciences perspectives are drawn.

The hands-on seminar teaches basic and intermediate multilevel techniques used in the social, health, and organizational sciences in an accessible manner. The course relies on the free software R and the modeling packages lme4 and nlme along with help functions and datasets from the multilevel library (Bliese, 2021). Topics include (1) aggregation models and the use of agreement and reliability statistics like the ICC1, ICC2, and rwg, (2) model specification and interpretation of “standard” multilevel models used in organizational research (data centering, random slopes, interaction effects),
