Full textAbstract

Full textThis paper aims to provide a contribution in the fight for greater participation in society for persons with disabilities. Research shows that it is important for people with mental disabilities to be seen in the labor market to counter stigmatizing effects. It turns out, however, that people with mental disabilities today is the group that has the most difficulties in entering the labor market. The purpose is to increase an understanding of the situation of disabled people in the labor market. The study is qualitative in nature and is based on interviews that are interpreted by an intersectional perspective, theory of rationalization (Weber) and social categorization (Tideman). The result shows a picture of how the labor market today is permeated by rationalization, efficiency, flexibility and profit endeavor. This brings with it a need to find employees who can meet these requirements. Furthermore, this leads to that job seekers tend to be categorized more in terms of functional capacity and efficiency. It turns out, however, that the situation may be more complex than this, since factors such as ethnicity, gender, age, religion and class matters. Potential labor tends to be selected within the framework of what we now regard as normality but also on who the employer and his organization can identify with most. Stereotypical notions about people, who are divided into different social categories, frequently appear to be crucial when it comes to who gets the job or not.

Full textAbstractThis article is about wheelchair users experience of staring and how they handle it. Garland-Thomson (2009) says that staring can be categorizing and fix peoples sex, ethnicity, class and function ability, which can reduce the person to be just one thing, for example: a person with disability. Staring can also be both normative and stigmatizing. We have made interviews with people who use wheelchairs, and all of them have experiences of staring. We´ve found different types of staring, such as the curious gaze, the avoiding gaze, the admiringly gaze etc. They all affect the informants in different ways, and how you react on the staring seems to be dependent on the context. The context also affects the gaze. The informants handle the staring in different ways. Some of the informants simply do not care if people stare, which can be interpreted as a strategy. Some of the informants stare back at the starer, which can be seen as a form of power and a possibility to "own the situation". Some of the informants were affected by the staring when they were younger, and did see themselves with negative eyes. This is what McRuer (2006) calls the internalized self hate. It means that you look at yourself with the eyes of the others, and internalize the picture of all people with disability as deviant and less worth. Some of the informants have experiences of feeling stigmatized by certarin occasions. It often happens when the availability fails, and they need help - then the environment stare more. You become the deviant when people stare at you (Goffman, 2011). In this article we´ve seen that the gaze often seems to have a normative and categorizing function, but not always stigmatizing. The informants do rarely feel different

Full textIn a historical perspective, people with intellectual disabilities have been a subject of varying discourses and attitudes. From being unwanted, displaced, mocked and persecuted, to be seen as citizens with legally enrolled rights. No other groups of people have been exposed for such a turn. The aim of this study is therefore to identity and explore constructions of people with intellectual disabilities in state public reports, published in different time periods. With qualitative content analysis as a method, four state investigations have been critically reviewed to problematize and discuss the beliefs and attitudes towards the group. The result indicates that the discourses have been affected by current social ideologies and values at the time of each investigation. Knowledge about people with intellectual disabilities is important in order for the group to not be invisible in the society. Therefore, it is significant to continue highlighting the subject.

Full textThis study is based on empirical data from two completed focus groups that explore how stu-dents with mild intellectual disabilities in special secondary schools perceive the term “sär-skola”. A social constructionist perspective is used with particular specialization in theories of categorization. Study results were analyzed trough thematic content analysis and the result showed all participating students experienced disadvantages of the term “särskola”, which they wanted removed. The term contributed to thoughts and feelings of being inferior and deviant. The disadvantages students raised with the term were that it contributes to limits, bullying and stamping. One focus group felt that the school form as such is positive, while the other focus group felt that it is negative. Both groups highlighted that any other term than the existing would be better, but they preferred no special term at all. Concerns were raised that a changed terminology would not make any long-term difference. The study’s conclusions are that the terminology and society's attitudes should change. Particular attention should be paid to inform the professionals, who have contact with students in special curriculum, of students’ experiences of the term. Furthermore, the term should be studied further, particularly from a student perspective.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to investigate which factors facilitate, or pose a barrier to, the social services’ work with abusive male partners in relationships. In addition to this, the aim of the study also includes exploring social workers’ views and preconceptions of abusive men. Data were collected through five semi-structured interviews with four social workers and one Head of Department. Organizational, role and gender theories were used in analyzing the data. Additional theoretical concepts used in this study are categorizing and masculinities. Our results show that changing societal views alongside knowledge and resources are facilitating factors. Furthermore, the results indicate a number of barriers. Firstly, working with these men appears to have low priority within the social services. In addition, there is a lack of services provided to abusive partners. Even though results indicate that changing societal views are starting to gain foothold within the social services, it is clear that the work of the social services largely overlooks the abusive partner. Another barrier is the lack of knowledge. Social workers do not have the appropriate training or experience in order to effectively work with abusive partners. Lastly, social workers themselves might form a barrier. Results show numerous preconceptions of violent men among the respondents in this study. The social workers tend to categorize violent men by negative stereotypes connected with masculinities and ethnicity. Although several of the social workers in this study show awareness of possible consequences of having negative stereotypes, it appears that they contribute to reproducing these stereotypes themselves.

Full textThe use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a natural part of many people's everyday life today. At the same time the risk of digital divides are highlighted by several community agencies in society. One of the risk groups mentioned here are elderly people, risking of falling behind and also to be left out the whole democratic process, because of lack of access to or knowledge of computers and the Internet. The aim of this study is to highlight elderly people's experiences of computers and IT and their participation and involvement in the IT society of today. The study is inspired by the ethnographic method and has a perspective of Social constructionism in which age can be understood as a social created category. The empirical material is based on six interviews with elderly people taking a computer course for beginners, as well as participant observations carried out during the computer course. It appears in the result, that a feeling of being forced is connected to keeping up with the technological development in our society, which can be stressful and frustrating. At the same time the informants feels that it is important to “keep up” with the society, and a curiosity is expressed towards technology. Informants learn computers in an active way. Meaningfulness in learning the computer is seen in everyday life as to maintain contact with grandchildren, search for information and to manage on your own. At the time, an underlying view of themselves and others exist, where the age is given importance in that it is harder to learn when you are old, or that older teachers are preferred since they have more understanding. In contrast to this it is expressed that good teachers will not depend on age, and those in the informants surroundings that supports them are usually young.

Full textIn this study earlier international research has been used from a Swedish perspective to investigate the field of decimal numbers. A theoretical framework for students’ various perceptions of decimal number has developed from the mathematical didactic research field. Earlier studies have done different attempts to categories students’ various perceptions of decimal numbers (Moloney & Stacey, 1997; Resnik et al., 1989; Sackur-Grisvard & Léonard, 1985; Stacey & Steinle, 1998). Sackur-Grisvard and Léonard (1985) categorization focus on students’ earlier knowledge in the mathematical field. Their theoretical framework involves the use of three different rules; the whole number rule, the fraction rule and the zero rule. Sackur-Grisvard and Léonard’s (1985) theoretical framework has not been used much in the Swedish research field. In this study the framework has been used to investigate if it can be used as a tool to categorise students in grade 4 and grade 5 various perception of decimal numbers. In this study the method triangulation has been used which involves a written test and semi-structure interviews. In the written test all students got tasks where they would compare and order different decimal numbers. The students result from the test were used to choose a few students from grade 4 and grade 5 to do the semi-structured interviews through a target-driven selection. The result showed that the theoretical framework did have some limits and several students´ did not belong to only one category, several students did use more than one of the three rules in the written test. The students result showed a progression where students from grade 6 performed best on the test followed by students from grade 5, students in grade 4 performed worst.
Karlsson, Yvonne. "Att inte vilja vara problem : social organisering och utvärdering av elever i en särskild undervisningsgrupp." Doctoral thesis, Linköping University, Linköping University, Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-11088.
The aim of the present doctoral thesis is to give an ”inside” description of how schools organize activities for students who do not fit into regular public education. Further, I explore how students, pedagogues, parents and former teachers account for the students’ school problems in research interviews. Finally, I investigate teachers’ assessments of students’ school problems in a scheduled daily evaluation activity. Data are drawn from a one-year ethnographic study, combined with recordings of everyday activities and interviews with five students (7-12 years), parents, pedagogues and former teachers.
The analysis demonstrates that the special teaching group is made invisible and marginalized on different levels, both centrally in the municipality and in the context of local school activities. Students consistently show low participation and agency in their everyday activities. Another finding shows that pedagogues are constantly assessing students’ school problems, making this a central everyday activity. In so doing, the pedagogues also upgrade the students’ school problems, drawing on various scientific discourses. This can be explained in light of the insecurity that exists regarding what the students’ problems actually are. On the other hand, the students position themselves as active agents and resist problem definitions. The students avoid the pedagogues’ definitions, downgrading ascribed problems and reformulating them. Further, the students take all chances to attribute problems to other students. In this way, they position themselves as able students, which can be interpreted as a way of maintaining self-respect.
Overall, the present findings underscore the need for detailed analysis of children’s social competence and agency in their everyday life in special teaching groups. My analysis demonstrates that descriptions are not neutral, but instead social activities in which identities, norms, social orders, moral versions, relationships and even institutions are established and resisted.

Through social sciences as well as in media, they are sometimes seen as a homogeneous group with the same underlying causes for dropping out of school. The purpose of this study is to gain increased understanding of nine young adults’ reasoning about their school dropout experiences. This aim is based on how norms and expectations can effect how the students perceive the treatment received by grownups around them in their childhood and adolescence. The question formulations through this study are as follows: How do this study’s interviewed individuals speak about their connections to school employees and other grownups in their adolescence? How can the interviewed individuals’ actions be understood in relation to norms and expectations by which they have seemed to relate during their upbringing? Narrative method has been practiced, where nine individuals who have all experienced dropping out of elementary and/or upper secondary school have been interviewed. The result has been analyzed based on theories focused on norms’ and expectations’ impact on individuals’ capacity for action. Essential theoretical terminology that is used to further understand the analysis is the following: Self-efficacy, expected outcome, personal goals, role models, encouragement, actions, norms, exclusion. Conclusions of this study indicate that individuals who have experienced dropping out of primary and/or upper secondary school are likely to have different experiences and reasons for dropping out. The conclusions also implicates that norms and expectations do play a substantial role for individuals and tend to contribute to different rates of categorization and exclusion. The individual life stories regarding so called school dropouts that have been described in this study do seem to have been prolonged processes, where students have not received sufficient support. The results also stresses that the bonding between school employees and students is crucial for the ability to identify the individual need for emotional and educational support in time.

(Justice in Physical Education forPhysically Disabled Pupils – A Dilemma of Distribution and Recognition.) Studiesfrom The Swedish Institute for Disability Research No. 12, pp. 112. LicentiateDissertation, written in Swedish with an English abstract. The educational goal of “a school for all” creates many challenges. Issues of socialjustice and equity are central tenets of the concept of inclusive education. Despitethe goal of comprehensive education for all children, for many pupils with physicaldisabilities in an inclusive school system PE (Physical Education) teaching canresult in experiences of injustice. In the struggle to achieve social equity and createeducational experiences where disability does not matter, it seams to matter verymuch. The aim of this study is to illustrate a dilemma and its potential outcomeswhere demands for justice for pupils with physical disabilities are raised in inclusivephysical education. In the study, based on theories of redistribution andrecognition, two empirical examples are presented. The first example, in the context of the decentralisation of Swedish compulsoryschools, illustrates degrees of awareness about numbers of pupils with physicaldisabilities attending compulsory schools located in a case municipality. Foursources, with varying responsibilities for disabled children, all reported differentnumbers of pupils. Thus, with no congruent data at municipality level, distribu-tion and redistribution of necessary resources becomes difficult. In the second example of a ten year old boy with a physical disability, experiences of participation in inclusive physical education are described, fromthe perspective of five different actors (the boy himself, his PE teachers (2), hisparents, classmates, and his personal assistant).Data for this case study was gathered through interviews and systematic ob-servation. In this particular case, the outcome of inclusive PE was judged to besuccessful. The example illustrates the importance of recognition needing to befulfilled at several distributive levels. The positive outcome is discussed in terms ofthe combination of identification of particular special needs, sensitive adaptation, and general respect for the child with physical disability.Dilemmas of justice for disabled pupils in physical education are best studiedwithin a multi-level context. Recognition and redistribution demands need to besimultaneously addressed in order to fulfil the goal of equitable education forpupils with physical disabilities attending PE within the compulsory school sys-tem. An attempt to combine these different ideological approaches is discussedfrom the perspective of social status. The outcome of the two empirical examples presented in this study illustrategeneral dilemmas reaching beyond the educational challenges facing pupils withphysical disabilities and the responses of the compulsory school system to them.

Full textTitle: Real Estate Agent as a profession - A study about the occupation´s professional categorization Level: Bachelor's thesis within Real Estate Science Author: Jesper Arnshed Supervisor: Karin Staffansson Pauli Date: May 2021 Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the real estate industry's view on the categorization of the broker´s profession, and what it takes for a higher categorization to be reached. Method: This study has applied a qualitative research methodology. With the help of semi-structured interviews, additional dimensions have supplemented the theoretical background, about the underlying aspects that are derived from the real estate agent's professional classification. Result & Conclusions: The result shows that the brokers´ aim towards a higher profession is partly prevented due to the gap between theory and practice. The new law change which i.a. intends to create conditions for a higher professional categorization, is predicted to have conflicting effects as it is not considered rooted in the real challenges and causes that affect the trust in brokers. Contribution of the thesis: The study contributed with additional understanding to the broker´s profession and what prevents a higher categorization. Suggestions for future research: As the changes in the law are implemented, it would be interesting to study what changes have had an impact in the industry and for the broker.

Full textThis study examines how society handles children who for different reasons can’t manage, or be managed, in compulsory schools. Observations and interviews were made in three different settings: 1) a foster home with its own school, 2) a small school for troubled youth, and 3) a home for assessment and treatment, without its own school. Common for these arenas are that the children have been separated and set apart from regular school, and they take place on the boundary, or in the intersection between, teaching and treatment. The aims are to reveal how different discourses about troubled youth, education and treatment create possibilities and limitations in relation to the goal of the practices targets, their means, and the actors. The study is based on research into interaction, daily life, and processes of identity transformation. The data is collected by ethnographic methods in the form of participant observations, and the analysis is informed by discourse analysis. In these communicative practices, educators and social workers were active in an area of research that is intimately related to identity. Analysis of everyday situations in pedagogical and social practices provides valuable knowledge for understanding what is going on in this practices and what the implications are for the actors. Examinations of the studied children’s environments and activities reveal the different emphases of efforts addressing the children’s needs which are informed by (connected to) the use of different discourses. The use of informal settings, playfulness, humour, and body contact help maintain consensus and build relationships. The relationships provide a basis for exerting influence. To offer support is also a means by which the young people can be controlled. Two strategies care and control are found to be linked in what Foucault describes as an exercise of pastoral power. These relationships are also the basis for intersubjectivity, that is, shared knowledge of the situation, including self-knowledge of the actors involved. The emphasis on informal environments and flexibility in interpreting the situation allows negotiation about who the children are and what they are expected to become. The balance in child welfare activities between coercion and free choice can be described as a balancing act in which employees have great responsibility for the children. The study discusses how different discourses affect young people’s identity. Considering the various working methods based on different discourses together with the specific child welfare activities suggests that there are several different ways to define the problem situation affecting the children; the children are in this way exposed to a number of troubled identities. The results also indicate that the children can refuse to make these identities their own. The children are actors who become visible through their resistance to what threatens their motives and through what is at stake for them, that is, their normality. Interviews with children have identified possible alternative identities that depend on repertoires of identities, in which some constructions are seen as more normal than others. The children prefer seeing themselves with friends at school and as pupils in school.
