Drawing on an ethnographic study of Roman Catholic sisters in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I show how women in the Global South draw on religious imagery to redefine cultural ideals of womanhood and family responsibility. By taking the religious vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, the Congolese sisters I interviewed seemingly betray local expectations regarding women’s responsibility to reproduce and repair the clan. Although sisters’ vows subject them to social ridicule for violating cultural expectations to bear children and support kin, they devise new strategies to negotiate the

Today, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) ranks extremely low in terms of development indicators even by regional standards. Poverty in the country is exacerbated by the DRC's long-embedded culture of political rent-seeking and corruption, which has historically shaped the government's involvement in the mining sector. By the 1990s, the government's mismanagement of the industrial mining sector led to its decreased productivity and near decline. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter on the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a comparative study of two major intervention attempts of the UN Peacekeeping mission in Congo (MONUSCO) in different theaters of conflict in North Kivu: one that was seen as a success (against the M23 rebellion, 2012–2013), and the other a failure (against the ADF rebellion, 2014–present). The chapter examines how differences in armed groups’ social embedment within local communities shaped resistance against the intervention and produced these varied outcomes of success/failure. The comparison allows for the examination of an emerging trend in peacekeeping—its militarization—as well as a consideration of how differences in civilian relations shape the possibility for peacebuilding. As the largest mission in UN history, these experiences offer empirical lessons for thinking about the future trajectory of peacebuilding.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the production of humanitarian photography in relation to spaces of conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In particular, it addresses the changing trends in NGO image content from negative to positive and their relationship to the region’s social and political contexts. Drawing upon experiences as an anthropologist and as an NGO photographer, the author uses ethnographic vignettes to illustrate how image assignments and field logistics lead to photographic practice that often produces a rosy, controlled visual reality. As a result, such upbeat depictions render invisible the nearby emergencies that fuel the very challenges the population strives to overcome, although associated captions and other text bring the conflict back into the images. Ultimately, this chapter advocates for imagery that encompasses the “beauty and the mess” of the region, challenging both the mere marketing of smiles and the simplistic sale of visualized suffering and disaster.
