Full textWith a systematic literature review and an interview, the aim of this essay is to try to describe how the social network analysis (SNA) is used in criminal investigations. Hopefully, the essay can also help in pointing out why future research is needed and in what direction that research should go. As a theory, SNA focuses on man as a social being and how we affect each other in the way we think and act. As a method SNA is a number of mathematical computations that aims to explain relationships. There is a large amount of research about social network analysis, both as a theory and as a method but in the criminological field SNA is still relatively new. That is surprising as many criminological theories focuses on the importance of the people we engage with and our own delinquency. The result in this essay shows that there are many advantages with using SNA in a criminal investigation, structures and key-persons becomes more visible which sometimes is hard without technology. Different types of data can generate very different results and if something goes wrong in the collection of data it can sabotage the entire analysis. There is a need for more theoretical research on SNA so that it, as a method, can be applied to criminological theory and later to criminal investigations. There is a big problem when doing research about social networks, the access to network-data. It is very hard to collect and is usually only available to police-officers or other qualified groups. Therefore the amount of literature in the subject is limited.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to understand how Alternative for Sweden (AfS) and the Swedish Democrats (SD) communicate in social media. The study can contribute with knowledge about how these parties can be seen in relation to right-wing populist actors and "alt-right" in the digital political landscapes that have emerged in recent years. This is done through a content analysis of the parties' communication on Facebook, and by examining the connections and relationships AfS and SD have with other actors in social media through a social network analysis. By analyzing explicit content on the Facebook page (Facebook posts) and implicit relationships with other people and / or organizations, the study aims to examine the parties' communicative content and contextual political positioning. Partly from a national perspective, as well as from an international perspective regarding the "alt-right movement" behavior and positioning online in recent years. The questions that follow through the study are: • How do AfS and SD's communication on Facebook differ for the parliamentary elections 2018, and what similarities do they have? • What does the AfS network look like compared to SD's? Which actors do they have connections to and does the social networks reflect in the parties' communication on Facebook? • What communicative focus does AfS and SD use in Facebook posts? What news themes, source reference, format and emotions are recurring, and to what extent do the parties focus on political opponents? • What level of engagement gives different focus on the parties' Facebook pages? The thesis's theoretical framework is based on previous research, which can be summarized based on two general themes. The first theme is research on "Alt-right" and the anti-establishment movement that this has spawned in recent years in the digital landscape. The second theme is right-wing populism online - in what context do we find right-wing populism and how is it manifested online? These themes overlap in such a way that the right-wing populism manifested online often has actors categorized as "alt-right," and they largely discuss the same policy areas, not least migration and criticism of established politicians and the media. In the study, a comparative content analysis has been supplemented with a social network analysis. In the comparative content analysis, communicative content in Facebook posts has been compared between AfS and SD's Facebook pages. All Facebook posts that the parties' official Facebook pages published the week before the election have been coded by variables linked to the study's issues. In the social network analysis, the parties 'and party leaders' official Facebook pages have been analyzed. A social network analysis has also been conducted based on mentions of the AfS Twitter account on Twitter. The results show that AfS refers to and uses alternative media to a large extent and of established media to a low degree, while the relationship is the opposite of SD. However, both parties have links to alternative media in their social networks. AfS social networks have connections to many actors outside the party, often those with connections to "alt-right" in other countries, while SD's network consists only of actors 4 representing the party. Party leaders Gustav Kasselstrand (AfS) and Jimmie Åkesson (SD) are central to the parties' social networks. In AfS social networks, Kasselstrand has more connections to people (for example other people in the management of AfS) while Åkesson in SD's social network has connections to units and functions within the party. Migration as a news topic on Facebook is over-represented by both AfS and SD, especially for AfS. Both AfS and SD use more negative emotions than positive emotions and discredit political opponents to a great extent in their Facebook posts. Such Facebook posts also generate, on average, a higher level of engagement than other posts. AfS uses Facebook posts that contain mobilization to a greater extent than SD.

Full textThe reporting of terrorist attacks has doubled globally since 2011. To counter and understand terrorism in the world, there is a need for an in-depth knowledge of the structure of terrorist networks and organizations, which can be achieved through social network analysis. Today there is an international necessity to compare different types of terrorist networks through social network analysis. Such a comparison can create tools for the authorities' crime prevention against terrorism and contribute with new and requested knowledge about comparing different terrorist organizations. The aim of the study has been to visualize and investigate network changes over time regarding network structure for both Islamic and left-wing terrorist networks during terrorist attacks. In this social network analysis, six terrorist attacks by a left-wing extremist terrorist group, November 17 and an Islamic terrorist group, al-Qaeda have been studied. The results showed that both visualization and network structure for the individual terrorist groups have changed over time. The study has found numerous similarities between November 17 and al-Qaeda regarding network structure and composition. The differences between the terrorist groups is that al-Qaeda consists of more numbers of nodes and has a lower density than November 17. The visualization of the networks also showed that November 17 mimics a clique.

Full textJuvenile delinquency is an ever present topic since a large number of the total crime consists of juvenile delinquency. Some types of offenses committed by young people may serve as an indicator that the perpetrator has an increased risk of continuing on a criminal path through life. Such a crime is robbery. Robbery constitutes a small proportion of the total juvenile delinquency in Sweden, however, Polisen Syd finds a worrying increase in robberys with young perpetrators. This essay is a qualitative study based on three networks of suspected perpetrators aged 15-18. The study aims to investigate the significance of a joint robbery for the various individuals continuing criminal careers, the importance of their positions in the networks and what such a network actually looks like. The material that forms the basis of the analysis consists of the police’s register of suspected perpetrators and various calculations linked to a network analysis. The study shows how the constellations between the individuals in the network looked during the robbery, as well as during other crimes. The results indicate that everyone, with the exception for one, in the networks continues on a criminal trajectory after committing the robbery, which strengthens the assumption of a robbery as a strategic crime. Furthermore, positions in the network that have been identified as particularly important for the network’s structure emerge. Based on them, the study illustrates how a network perspective can be applied to similar bases and act as a way of working to minimize the risk of a continued criminal career, from which the study can serve as a tool in the continued work in understanding and counteracting the development of personal robberies committed by young offenders.

Full textNowadays, it is well known that it is highly important to involve the customers in the product development in order to better understand the needs of the market, increase the relations to customers and maximize the value creation of the products. This will result in a higher innovation capacity for the organization. This case study intends to answer the research questions, how to allocate the customer information flow in a systematic approach at a medium size high technology company in order to increase the innovation capacity. The research methodology consists of three different parts including pre study, social network analysis, and internal and external benchmarking. The pre study consists of 21 interviews internally in the organization and the social network analysis is based on a survey, which 49 individuals have answered. The benchmarking involves six employees from another department and two interviews with external companies within the same business. The results indicate that the amount of customer interactions with external parties must be decreased in order to systematically receive and maintain customer information. In order to increase the information flow within the organization a specific department, that have daily contacts with almost all departments, should act as a transmitting function as they would connect marketing with research and development. Furthermore, the customer information should be included in the daily working process as it is easier for the employees to embrace and jointly utilize this information.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to gain a holistic understanding of the importance of social networks in the establishment in the Swedish labor market for Arabic-speaking and Persian-speaking individuals who have immigrated to Sweden. The study intends to answer how immigrants use their social network to establish themselves in the labor market, it also tends to understand in which way the informants experience that competence and knowledge are important in the establishment in the Swedish labor market. Lastly, it aims to understand what significance the place has for networks and establishment. The study was conducted using a qualitative method where seven informants were interviewed. In the framework of the related study, we used previous research with a relevant connection to the study's purpose and issues. The collected empirical data were analyzed on the basis of Hodkinson's and Sparkes Careership-theory, Pierre Bourdieu's capital theory and Robert D. Putnam's theory of connecting and bridging social capital. Furthermore, the study was conducted with the help of an egocentric network analysis. The results of the study indicate that the informants have used different paths for establishment in the labor market. What is clear is that for some informants, connecting and bridging social capital has been important for the establishment. The results clearly show that education is of crucial importance for the establishment. Other factors that can affect the establishment are language skills and work experience according to the informants’ stories. Furthermore, it has emerged that the geographical location has a close connection to the informants' life context. Based on the results of the study, everything indicates that the Swedish language is the most crucial aspect for networking and establishment.

Full textThis bachelor level thesis examines policy and network structure for the Swedish food distribution network called REKO. A network which matches local producers with consumers through Facebook. The thesis discusses REKO as a cotemporally example of technoculture under influence of trends such as the digital transformation of social life and longer distances between producer and end consumer. The thesis also describes and discuss how policy is made and recreated in a flat network without legal bodies. The policy analysis shows how “simplicity” is a focal point loaded with different meanings and goals. In the nethnographic part of the study describes the shifting shape of the network. Lastly the thesis puts REKO in a general technocultural context where internet and social media still gets a bigger role for humanity.

Full textThe aim of the study was to investigate how professionals at Children’s advocacy center (Barnahus) create conditions for children to talk about sexual abuse. The data in this qualitative study was collected through nine semi-structured interviews and the material was analyzed with thematic network analysis. Communication theory was used as an theoretical frame. The results showed that professionals must have knowledge of children and different counseling methods, and they must be prepared to listen to the child´s story. The study also showed that a structure for the conversation and creating security for the child are success factors helping children to tell about sexual abuse. More research is needed to develop safe conversation and counseling methods to enable more children to tell about the abuse.
