Verloo, Nanke, and Luca Bertolini, eds. Seeing the City. Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463728942.

Full text
Abstract:
The city is a complex object. Some researchers look at its shape, others at its people, animals, ecology, policy, infrastructures, buildings, history, art, or technical networks. Some researchers analyse processes of in- or exclusion, gentrification, or social mobility; others biological evolution, traffic flows, or spatial development. Many combine these topics or add still more topics beyond this list. Some projects cross the boundaries of research and practice and engage in action research, while others pursue knowledge for the sake of curiosity. This volume embraces this variety of perspectives and provides an essential collection of methodologies for studying the city from multiple, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspectives. We start by recognizing that the complexity of the urban environment cannot be understood from a single vantage point. We therefore offer multiple methodologies in order to gather and analyse data about the city, and provide ways to connect and integrate these approaches. The contributors form a talented network of urban scholars and practitioners at the forefront of their fields. They offer hands-on methodological techniques and skills for data collection and analysis. Furthermore, they reveal honest and insightful reflections from behind the scenes. All methodologies are illustrated with examples drawn from the authors own research applying them in the city of Amsterdam. In this way, the volume also offers a rich collection of Amsterdam-based research and outcomes that may inform local urban practitioners and policy makers. Altogether, the volume offers indispensable tools for and aims to educate a new generation of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary-minded urban scholars and practitioners.

Bassnett, Madeline, and Hillary M. Nunn. In the Kitchen, 1550–1800. Amsterdam University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463721646.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Kitchen insists that the preparation of food, whether imaginative, physical, or spatial, is central to a deeper understanding of early modern food cultures and practices. Devoted to the arts of cooking and medicine, early modern kitchens concentrated on producing, processing, and preserving materials necessary for nourishment and survival; yet they also fed social and economic networks and nurtured a sense of physical, spiritual, and political connection to surrounding lands and their cultures. The essays in this volume illuminate this expansive view of cooking and aspire to show how the kitchen's inner workings prove tightly, though often invisibly, interwoven with local, national, and, increasingly, global surroundings. Engaging with literary and historical methodologies, including close reading, recipe analysis, and perspectives on gender, class, race, and colonialism, we begin to develop a shared theoretical and practical language for the art of cooking that combines the physical with the intellectual, the local with the global, and the domestic with the political.

Abstract:
One of the most exciting recent developments in archaeology and history has been the adoption of new perspectives which see human societies in the past--as in the present--as made up of networks of interlinked individuals. This view of people as always connected through physical and conceptual networks along which resources, information, and disease flow, requires archaeologists and historians to use new methods to understand how these networks form, function, and change over time. The Connected Past provides a constructive methodological and theoretical critique of the growth in research applying network perspectives in archaeology and history and considers the unique challenges presented by datasets in these disciplines, including the fragmentary and material nature of such data and the functioning and change of social processes over long timespans. An international and multidisciplinary range of scholars debate both the rationale and practicalities of applying network methodologies, addressing the merits and drawbacks of specific techniques of analysis for a range of datasets and research questions, and demonstrating their approaches with concrete case studies and detailed illustrations. As well as revealing the valuable contributions archaeologists and historians can make to network science, the volume represents a crucial step towards the development of best practice in the field, especially in exploring the interactions between social and material elements of networks, and long-term network evolution.

Hunt, Alice, ed. The Oxford Handbook of Archaeological Ceramic Analysis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199681532.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Archaeological Ceramic Analysis draws together topics and methodologies essential for the socio-cultural, mineralogical, and geochemical analysis of archaeological ceramic. Ceramic is one of the most complex and ubiquitous archaeomaterials in the archaeological record: it occurs around the world and through time in almost every culture and context, from building materials and technological installations to utilitarian wares and votive figurines. For more than 100 years, archaeologists have used ceramic analysis to answer complex questions about economy, subsistence, technological innovation, social organization, and dating. The volume is structured around the themes “Research design and data analysis,” “Foundational concepts,” “Evaluating ceramic provenance,” “Investigating ceramic manufacture,” “Assessing vessel function,” and “Dating ceramic assemblages.” It provides a common vocabulary and offers practical tools and guidelines for ceramic analysis using techniques and methodologies ranging from network analysis and typology to rehydroxylation dating and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Each chapter provides the theoretical background and practical guidelines, such as cost and destructiveness of analysis, for each technique, as well as detailed case studies illustrating the application and interpretation of analytical data for answering anthropological questions.

Gazzaniga, Michael S., and George R. Mangun, eds. The Cognitive Neurosciences. 5th ed. The MIT Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.7551/mitpress/9504.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The fifth edition of a work that defines the field of cognitive neuroscience, with entirely new material that reflects recent advances in the field. Each edition of this classic reference has proved to be a benchmark in the developing field of cognitive neuroscience. The fifth edition of The Cognitive Neurosciences continues to chart new directions in the study of the biological underpinnings of complex cognition—the relationship between the structural and physiological mechanisms of the nervous system and the psychological reality of the mind. It offers entirely new material, reflecting recent advances in the field. Many of the developments in cognitive neuroscience have been shaped by the introduction of novel tools and methodologies, and a new section is devoted to methods that promise to guide the field into the future—from sophisticated models of causality in brain function to the application of network theory to massive data sets. Another new section treats neuroscience and society, considering some of the moral and political quandaries posed by current neuroscientific methods. Other sections describe, among other things, new research that draws on developmental imaging to study the changing structure and function of the brain over the lifespan; progress in establishing increasingly precise models of memory; research that confirms the study of emotion and social cognition as a core area in cognitive neuroscience; and new findings that cast doubt on the so-called neural correlates of consciousness.

Abstract:
This work is the result of a Stricto Sensu Graduate Program research study in psychology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás (PUC Goiás). It aimed to capture the methodologies used and the meanings experienced by psychology professionals while performing psychosocial work on child victims of sexual abuse. In this scenario, the referred research was developed seeking to provoke reflections, expressions and co-production of meanings in relation to this theme. This study is based on the vigotskian socio-historical conception and bibliographical, documentary and empirical research was used as methodological support for data collection. The study concluded that, in several aspects of the psychosocial care offered by Creas, there are numerous challenges for the professionals involved, such as: lack of training for the expected performance, lack of physical structure for most units, lack of diverse resources, lack of specialized materials and lack of collaboration between the different parties within the child care and protection network of the city. Failure in family adherence is an obstacle in treatments according to psychologists. In addition, there are insufficient materials, space and human resources to provide quality care. Finally, the collaboration in the network is pointed as a crucial key for efficiency in treatment.

Leese, Peter. Migrant Representations. Liverpool University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781802070156.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Migrant Representations explores the depiction of migrant figure from the late 18th to the early 21st century through a series of contrasting, comparative case studies guided by two questions: how were the lives of migrants rendered in the past? how has the contemporary figure of the migrant been constructed historically, politically and aesthetically? The study contextualises analyses and compares accounts from migrants who have connections to Britain with parallel cases spanning South Asia, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and the United States. This analysis of life stories is complemented by the theme of investigation: how activists, journalists, social scientists have interpreted the lives and experiences of migrants. The interplay between self-representation and the investigation of migrant experience is discussed in the third section of the study, which gathers visual evidence of both self-representation and observer investigation. Migrant Representations explores the sense-making procedures (talking, writing, filming), social networks (family, community, diaspora) and cultural resources (history, language, genres) used by migrants and their observers. This study is not a comprehensive overview or ‘history of migration’; instead it acknowledges and investigates the varieties of migrant representation to recognize and celebrate the local and the individual. Using innovative analytic methodologies and a carefully patterned composition, Migrant Representations suggests creative new ways of writing history ‘from below’.
