Abstract:
The notion of distortion in social choice problems has been defined to measure the loss in efficiency---typically measured by the utilitarian social welfare, the sum of utilities of the participating agents---due to having access only to limited information about the preferences of the agents. Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to expose the inadequacy of social marketing to tackle complex social problems, while proposing an expansion in the discipline’ conceptual repertoire. The goal is to incorporate complexity tools, in particular from the system dynamics field, and the promotion of mindware within a true transdisciplinary paradigm. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses literature review to support the proposed theoretical development. It also presents a short case study. Findings Most problems that plague our modern societies have a distinctive complex nature that is not amenable to traditional social marketing interventions. Social marketing has simplified the problem of bringing about societal change by thinking that upstream social actors can be influenced in the same way as downstream individuals. This paper shows that this is not the case while proposing a framework to close this gap. Research limitations/implications The proposed framework is a theoretical one. It depends on further refinements and actual application to wicked problems. Practical implications Complex social problems – or wicked problems – remain widespread in modern societies. Moreover, they are getting worse over time. The paper presents a proposal to redefine the limits of the social marketing discipline so it can be more useful to tackle such problems. Practical approaches such as measuring the success of mindware in the marketplace of ideas are implied in the proposed framework. Social implications The increase in complexity of social problems has not been accompanied by an evolution in the discipline of social marketing. The lack of proper conceptual tools has prevented the discipline from contributing to tackling these problems effectively. Some interventions may actually worsen the underlying problems, as illustrated in the paper. Originality/value This paper identifies two major gaps associated with the social marketing discipline, in particular the lack of complexity and systems thinking and the forsaking of ideas (mindware) as a legitimate goal of the discipline. This realization corroborates the claim that boundaries among disciplines are often artificial, hindering the proper understanding of complex social problems. In turn, only the use of adequate conceptual lenses makes it possible to devise interventions and programs that tackle actual causes (instead of symptoms) of complex social problems.

Abstract:
This study aims to determine and analyze the causes. What is meant by social problems and who are people with social welfare problems (PMKS) and potential sources of social welfare (PSKS)? And how can social welfare be realized in the midst of society? This research method used is empirical juridical method. Sources of data use primary and secondary data. Data collection methods are carried out by interviews and literature techniques through literature studies by reading, studying books and related laws and regulations. The problems of this research were analyzed with the theory of democracy, theory of elections and theory of social problems. This result research shows that in overcoming social problems is constrained by the low community participation to participate in handling social problems in the field. Therefore the role of the government is to be able to develop awareness in the community so that the nature of social volunteerism that exists in the community can arise so that the character to help others through individuals and communities and organizations can emerge. If only relying on the government's helping hand through the social programs disbursed, it has not been able to solve or close the gap in social problems that arise in the community. Furthermore, the government must be able to match the existing potentials in the community so that it can be used as a core force in building a network of social pillars in the community.

Cousins, Helen Rachel. "Conjugal wrongs : gender violence in African women's literature." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2001. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6934/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers ways in which African women writers are exploring the subject of violence against women. Any attempt to apply feminist criticism to novels by African women must be rooted in a satisfactorily African feminism. Therefore, the history of black feminist thought is outlined showing how African feminisms have been articulated in dialogue with western feminists, black feminisms (developed by women in the African-American diaspora), and through recognition of indigenous ideologies which allowed African women to protest against oppression. Links will be established between the texts, despite their differences, which suggest that, collectively, these novels support the notion that gender violence affects the lives of a majority of African women (from all backgrounds) to a greater or lesser extent. This is because it is supported by the social structures developed and sustained in cultures underpinned by patriarchal ideologies. A range of strategies for managing violence arise from a cross-textual reading of the novels. These will be analysed in terms of their efficacy and rootedness in African feminisms’ principles. The more effective strategies being adopted are found in works by Ama Ata Aidoo and Lindsey Collen and these focus particularly on changing the meanings of motherhood and marriage.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the early twentieth-century writings of four modernist writers – Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Ford, D. H. Lawrence, and Wyndham Lewis – in relation to the problem of utopianism. The introductory chapter provides an overview of current scholarly debates concerning the nature and structure of utopian thinking, and establishes the broad context in which the above writers are considered in the argument that follows. The thesis works with an inclusive definition of utopianism that views it as an expression of the urge to better society, as opposed to an urge to realize social perfection. After a wide-ranging summary of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century utopian discourses, a summary that attends to the pre-First World War criticism of T. E. Hulme and Ezra Pound, the thesis turns to individual, ‘case study’ chapters that focus on the above-mentioned quartet of writers. Each chapter looks at a key issue: Conrad in relation to political anarchism; Ford in relation to urban design; Lawrence in relation to utopian philosophies of labour; and Lewis in relation to the linkages between the historical avant-garde and the betterment of society. The main claims running throughout the thesis are that in the period under consideration the links between modernism and utopianism are: complex; multi-sided and author-specific; politically multifarious; and insufficiently acknowledged by contemporary critics.

Ritchie, Stefka. "Samuel Johnson : a promoter of social improvement." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2014. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5135/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores what remains an under-studied aspect of Samuel Johnson’s profile as a person and writer – his attitude to social improvement. Confronting past and current critical opinion and adhering closely to Johnson’s various writings, the thesis aims to establish the reasons for the failure to identify Johnson’s relationship to social concerns during his lifetime. The study also considers the influence of particular moral philosophies on Johnson’s approach to social improvement, such as those of Hugo Grotius, Richard Cumberland, Francis Bacon and John Locke. A range of sources include Johnson’s essays in the Rambler, Idler and Adventurer, his various reviews in the Literary Magazine and the Gentleman’s Magazine, his Diary of his travels in the Midlands and the Tour of the Highlands with Boswell, as well as various texts he wrote for others who were also concerned with social improvement. When Johnson protests against the institutions of his day he seeks to alleviate a tangible evil, such as the wretchedness of prostitutes, the agonies of imprisoned debtors and the destitution suffered by their families and the terrors of those condemned to death, often for some trivial offence. The profiles of Robert Dossie, Robert Chambers, William Chambers and John Gwynne together with those of Saunders Welch and William Dodd are discussed in the context of their interests in agriculture, architecture and the law, respectively. Placing those eighteenth-century figures at the centre of historical enquiry furnishes a richer dimension to the analysis of Johnson’s mode of thinking which allows us to respond to his works in a multi-faceted way. The interpretive framework of the thesis is cross-disciplinary and applies ii perspectives from social and cultural history, legal history, architectural history and, of course, English literature. This allows Johnson’s writings to be read against the peculiarities of their historical milieu and reveal Johnson in a new light – as an advocate of social improvement for human betterment.

Abstract:
Although research on social entrepreneurship has been expanding in recent years, the literature regarding business models in the context of social enterprises is still limited. This chapter explores the issues of business models in both profit and nonprofit contexts and discusses how value, being both the foundation and the overall outcome of the business model employed, is created. It begins with the background on the characteristics of social enterprises. This is followed by the conceptualization of business models and their components designed to account for their unique. Then a case to illustrate it is presented. The objective of the chapter is twofold. First, it is to analyse how nonprofit business models are different from its for profit counterparts (at the conceptual level) and to introduce relevant analytical framework. Secondly, the chapter aims at providing a case based on the particular model of a social enterprise in Poland (social co-operative) in order to investigate whatever the business models for profit firms could be applied in the social enterprises.

Abstract:
Social entrepreneurship attracts attention to the science world as a conceptual field of social benefit based on business activities. Social entrepreneurs are the actors who drive innovation with commercial tolerance and uncertainty tolerance in order to raise social welfare and find solutions to social problems. Especially the injustices and inadequacies in transferring public support to social problems have increased the importance of social entrepreneurship. In addition to the conceptual projection of social entrepreneurship, this research has raised fundamental problems that have hampered social entrepreneurship and prevented further development, and a number of solution proposals have been developed in order to get rid of these problems. This concept, which has been separated from traditional entrepreneurship and is in the process of building its own literature, has many parts to inspire next research. It is hoped that this study, which includes proposals for next research, will contribute to the scientific world. It is thought that this study created by the method of literature review will have more specific conceptual contribution to the investigation of various researches from different disciplines and their unique character in terms of their synthesis.

Abstract:
A literature review is a summary of existing literature on topics of interest to the study. It provides proof of a gap in the literature that must be filled by the current study. Having a thorough literature review is the first step in planning a new research project. There are several critical reasons for writing a literature review. First, it is to identify the practical problem. Second, it is to identify the theoretical problem. The researcher should examine the literature about the problem area; both the theoretical literature and research literature. This helps to identify specific research purposes, questions, or testable hypotheses. Published research often makes specific suggestions for future research in the last section of their articles. This chapter on the literature review will provide a step-by-step method to write an effective literature review.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the complex relationship between ‘punishment’ and ‘welfare.’ It traces the various ways in which penal systems are influenced by, and interact with, broader systems of social welfare and how these linked institutions function as modes of social control and class control. Following a critical review of the historical and comparative literature—and associated questions of data and method—it discusses how penal and welfare policies relate to the social problems they purport to address and to the political and socio-economic structures within which they operate. ‘Penal-welfarist’ and ‘welfarist’ practices are defined and differentiated, some common elements of practices of punishing and assisting are identified, and the fundamentals of ‘the welfare state’ and its recent neoliberal history are explained.

Abstract:
Background: The psychology of love is a field that, although it has many well-established theories, is not a field that is thriving on research. This is particularly evident in Poland, where the psychology of love is a branch of psychology in terms of conducting research only just being developed. An important aspect that should be taken into account in the context of establishing romantic relationships is the increasingly popular phenomenon of getting to know each other via the Internet. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the need for the development of the psychology of love and the need for a more thorough understanding of the phenomenon of online dating from an interdisciplinary perspective. Method: The method of developing this paper was to analyze the available literature on the psychology of love and the literature on the sociological aspect of getting to know each other via the Internet. Results: The analysis made showed a glaring need to develop the psychology of love through research. Conclusion: After analyzing the available sources related to the psychology of love and getting to know each other via the Internet, one can see a clear need for a deeper understanding of the aforementioned subject matter. It is also important to note the need to develop the possibility of psychometric measurement of love, especially in Polish conditions. Results: The analysis of scientific literature and research data confirmed our hypothesis about the active dynamics of the issue of integration of internally displaced persons. It was determined that there are a number of barriers in the integration process. Some people integrate temporarily. Conclusion: The analysis of the problem shows the active coordinated work of the government and ministries, the presence of certain legislative problems, as well as unresolved infrastructure issues. At the local level and in communities, there are not always enough resources to solve urgent problems. The integration of this category of persons takes place depending on the age and social status of the person. Key words: war, internally displaced persons, integration, social policy, social work.

Abstract:
Background: Child foster care is a much-needed service. It solves a number of urgent issues: preventing children from entering boarding schools, supporting biological parents, and preserving families. The development of family-based care in Ukraine has been slow since 2017. This issue is regulated at the legislative level, but there are certain gaps in the issues after the implementation of the decentralization reform, search, selection and training of candidates for foster care, supervision, responsibility for the child's health, labor and financial support of foster care. Objective: Based on the study, to find out the peculiarities of the functioning of foster care in Ukraine at the present stage. Methods: analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalization to study the content of theoretical sources and systematic understanding of the problem; analysis of documents to study the scientific, regulatory and practical aspects of the issue; analysis of data on the dynamics of the problem. Results: The analysis of scientific literature and case study data confirmed our hypothesis about the slow dynamics of the development of family patronage services in Ukraine and the existence of a number of problems in this area. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate the existence of a number of legislative problems, as well as problems related to the culture and mentality of society in the field of family patronage. We assume that the challenges of today will change the value perception of this problem in a positive way. Key words: child patronage, foster care, biological family, family forms of upbringing, social policy, public organization.

Abstract:
Background: Statistics on the number of blood donors and blood donations in Poland have been decreasing every year for the last decade. This state of affairs raises the need for the social sciences to engage in research into the barriers to attracting new donors and retaining ongoing donors. Purpose: The objective of this article is to outline the two main barriers to attracting new blood donors and retaining existing ones. The second A second aim is also to highlight the fact that no research in the domain of social sciences has so far been undertaken in Poland to reverse the declining trend in the number of donors and donations. Methods: An analysis of the literature on the subject and GUS data was used. Results: The analysis identified two key barriers that require the development of Polish adaptations of tools to empirically investigate them. Conclusion: There is an important need to focus on the issue of blood donation in Poland. Investigating all the variables behind the declining number of donors will allow the declining trend to be reversed. A lack of research into factors that strengthen the motivation to donate blood may have serious and negative consequences in the coming decades. Brakarz, José, and Laura Jaitman. Evaluation of Slum Upgrading Programs: Literature Review and Methodological Approaches. Inter-American Development Bank, December 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009149.

Full text
Abstract:
This technical note analyzes the methodologies used to evaluate neighborhood upgrading programs, describes their results, and suggests approaches for future evaluations. Local and central governments are increasingly utilizing slum or neighborhood upgrading programs to deal with the multiple problems of urban poverty. These programs employ a methodology of integral interventions, combining of both infrastructure works and social services targeted to specific neighborhoods. Due to this variety of interventions the assessment of their impact is complicated and requires a comprehensive approach. This document analyzes the methods used in the evaluation of a number of upgrading programs either looking at individual interventions or their combined outcomes. It proposes a methodological approach for their assessment based on three categories of outcomes: housing, neighborhood, and individual. For each type of outcome, the authors present a literature review of common interventions and their evaluation results. The document also suggests relevant indicators for evaluating slum upgrading programs according to these three types of outcomes, and finally, it presents methodological issues to take into consideration when designing the evaluations of integral programs.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The primary objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to moral injury in social work staff. The secondary objective is to establish how moral injury has been defined in the literature in the context of social work. The review question is: what is currently known about moral injury in social work staff? Background: Moral injury is the lasting psychological, spiritual and social harm caused by committing, experiencing or observing transgressions of deeply held moral values, beliefs and expectations (Haight et al., 2016). The concept of moral injury was developed and subsequently researched with populations of US veterans. Core symptomatic features of moral injury are guilt, shame, spiritual/existential conflict, and a loss of trust in self, others, and/or transcendental ultimate beings (Jinkerson, 2016). Secondary symptomatic features include depression, anxiety, anger, re-experiencing the moral conflict, self-harm, and social problems (Jinkerson, 2016).

Abstract:
In this paper it’s the first time the authors have reviewed linguistic literature (2008-2022) devoted to the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. The purpose of the paper is to review linguistic literature and identify the current state of the problem of literary and electronic hypertext. Materials and methods. On the basis of this purpose we reviewed 42 scientific papers published in 2008-2022 and representing the results of linguistic research of literary and electronic hypertext. For our study we used an analytical and descriptive method, which is traditional for linguistics and allows us to solve the tasks set in our paper. Results. A review of linguistic papers has shown that hypertext is a relevant subject of linguistic research. Scientists propose various definitions of this concept; consider it as a “special information and communication environment”. Many studies are devoted to literary (fiction and non-fiction) hypertext, however, a much larger number of papers are devoted to various aspects of electronic hypertext, including electronic fiction hypertext and electronic hypertext of some genres (news genres, online advertising, social network and online diary community as well as websites). We consider that it is the electronic environment where hypertext is implemented in all its functions. Practical implications. The results of the study can be used as a theoretical basis for further theoretical and practical study of various aspects of literary and electronic hypertext.

Urfels, Marie. From state support to market and financialization measures in crisis times: A comparative literature review of the Swedish and German housing systems. Malmö University, Faculty of Culture and Society (KS), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.24834/isbn.9789178772605.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper present the findings of an extensive literature review on the housing systems in Germany and Sweden. The literature review majorly focuses on the rental housing sector but also touches upon other segments of the housing market, especially the cooperative housing sector. The report thus provides a general overview and situates the rental sector in the wider context of the overall housing market in the two countries. The paper adds valuable knowledge about the large differences in the post-war responses to the housing shortage in Germany and Sweden. While Sweden responded with a universal off-market approach to housing, (West) Germany implemented a dualist housing system within a social market economy. Despite differences in past solutions, the contemporary problems seem to be similar. The report concludes that, in the search of a response to the current housing crisis, Germany sees a re-emergence of the state, while Sweden’s next moves are uncertain.

Haider, Huma. Political Settlements: The Case of Moldova. Institute of Development Studies, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.065.

Full text
Abstract:
The new elite in post-1991 independent Moldova gradually captured state institutions, while internal drivers of reforms have generally been weak. Civil society has had limited effectiveness; and the media is largely dominated by political and business circles (BTI, 2022). The Moldovan diaspora has emerged in recent years, however, as a powerful driver of reform. In addition, new political parties and politicians have in recent years focused on common social and economic problems, rather than exploiting identity and geopolitical cleavages. These two developments played a crucial role in the transformative changes in the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2020 and 2021, respectively.1 The new Moldovan leadership has experienced many challenges, however, in achieving justice and anti-corruption reforms—the primary components of their electoral platform—due to the persistence of rent-seeking and corruption in the justice sector (Minzarari, 2022). This rapid review examines literature—primarily academic and non-governmental organisation (NGO)-based—in relation to the political settlement of Moldova. It provides an overview of the political settlement framework and the political history of Moldova. It then draws on the literature to explore aspects of the social foundation and the power configuration in Moldova; and implications for governance and inclusive development. The report concludes with recommendations for government, domestic reformers, Moldovan society, and donors for improving inclusive governance and development in Moldova, identified throughout the literature. This report does not cover political settlement in relation to Transnistria.

Gonzalez Diez, Verónica M. Ex Post Evaluation of Mitigation Measures in the Samalayuca II and Monterrey III Thermal Power Generation Projects. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010446.

Abstract:
This evaluation conducts an ex post review of the mitigation measures in the Samalayuca II and Monterrey III thermal power generation projects in Mexico. In general, it can be concluded that both thermoelectric power plants took into account most of the environmental impacts and mitigation measures recommended by the literature. A more active role in project design, supervision, and monitoring by the IDB would increase the technical value added. Social action plans need to be considered, as well as local community participation during project design and monitoring. Targeted studies to solve environmental problems can reduce uncertainty when choosing alternatives for managing associated risks. The participation of multidisciplinary teams and local specialists in the drafting of evaluation and monitoring reports would strengthen the technical aspects of the reports.

London, Jonathan. Outlier Vietnam and the Problem of Embeddedness: Contributions to the Political Economy of Learning. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), February 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2021/062.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent literature on the political economy of education highlights the role of political settlements, political commitments, and features of public governance in shaping education systems’ development and performance around learning. Vietnam’s experiences provide fertile ground for the critique and further development of this literature including, especially, its efforts to understand how features of accountability relations shape education systems’ performance across time and place. Globally, Vietnam is a contemporary outlier in education, having achieved rapid gains in enrolment and strong learning outcomes at relatively low levels of income. This paper proposes that beyond such felicitous conditions as economic growth and social historical and cultural elements that valorize education, Vietnam’s distinctive combination of Leninist political commitments to education and high levels of societal engagement in the education system often works to enhance accountability within the system in ways that contribute to the system’s coherence around learning; reflecting the sense and reality that Vietnam is a country in which education is a first national priority. Importantly, these alleged elements exist alongside other features that significantly undermine the system’s coherence and performance around learning. These include, among others, the system’s incoherent patterns of decentralization, the commercialization and commodification of schooling and learning, and corresponding patterns of systemic inequality. Taken together, these features of education in Vietnam underscore how the coherence of accountability relations that shape learning outcomes are contingent on the manner in which national and local systems are embedded within their broader social environments while also raising intriguing ideas for efforts to understand the conditions under which education systems’ performance with respect to learning can be promoted, supported, and sustained.

Iffat, Idris. Best Practices in CRSV Monitoring and Early Warning. Institute of Development Studies, June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2022.126.

Full text
Abstract:
Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) is a major problem, which has significant negative impacts on victims/survivors, wider society and peace prospects. There is growing international recognition of the need to combat it. CRSV monitoring and early warning are vital in this regard, enabling effective responses and preventive measures. Various factors, notably social stigma, mean that CRSV is vastly under-reported. Best practices to promote CRSV monitoring and early warning include: having appropriate staff (including specialist personnel); engaging with local communities to promote reporting of cases and of warning signals; following principles such as ensuring confidentiality, informed consent and respect for victims/survivors; using standardised data collection templates to facilitate information sharing and analysis; assessing CRSV risks in context against a prepared matrix of early warning indicators; carrying out awareness-raising and advocacy on CRSV; and, where risks are identified, raising the alarm in affected communities. This review looks at best practices in monitoring conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV), and in CRSV early warning. It draws largely on grey literature, in particular reports of development organisations such as the United Nations. Much of the literature focuses on peacekeeping missions: far less was found with regard to the role of other actors (e.g. NGOs) in CRSV monitoring and early warning. [Note: there is substantial academic literature on the problem of CRSV rather than on best practices to combat it.] In addition, the review found no in-depth evidence (e.g. evaluations) on the experience of applying CRSV monitoring and early warning practices in specific contexts. Given the subject, the available literature does refer to women and girls, but was largely disability-blind. URI
