Abstract:
This chapter analyzes the materialities of Internet protocols, focusing on the relationship between content and conduit, which involves both the compression and modulation of signals. Network protocols are shaped by material constraints. Similarly, the centrality of routing to the Internet can be understood materially in terms of the arrangement of network nodes, the cost of routing, the structure of networks, the size of routing tables, and the dynamics of connectivity. Critically, this materiality cuts across apparently different domains of concern—from the practice of network operations to the rhetoric of democratic access. The chapter then contrasts two different protocols, the Routing Information Protocol and the Exterior Gateway Protocol, which emerged in different historical moments and cultural conditions. Examining the social construction of these network protocols can help differentiate the actual Internet from a possible or imagined Internet.

Abstract:
This chapter consists of narratives of three people who became insolvents. Each is about the circumstances of particular merchants and brokers. Jamshedji Tata was an emerging entrepreneur. His proximity to representatives in the colonial order enabled him to overcome the crisis in his business. Premchund Roychund, a prominent broker who became insolvent, also had close ties with the colonial bankers whose support helped him to survive. Kahandas Narandas belonged to the traditional business elite who did not have the advantage of colonial support. He was totally ruined. The stories of these three merchants reveal the activities and relationships that governed their lives. They illustrate the networks through which money, credit, and loans circulated in the world of business. These stories connect the economic trajectories to the social and cultural world of people and their lives.

Abstract:
Theory and research support a developmental model of hope, wherein hope is formed in the context of secure attachment to supportive parents in childhood. This chapter reviews the literature and articulates the many biopsychosocial processes involved in instilling a secure attachment style and the hopeful cognitive processes that go with it. In so doing, it highlights the critical balance between exploratory and attachment systems, with the need for approach-oriented goal pursuits on the one side and having a secure base to retreat to on the other. It demonstrates how both functions (exploration and attachment/proximity-seeking) are needed for hope to flourish and highlights key elements needed for use in resiliency and intervention efforts as well as for research on developmental positive psychology.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how sacred sites are also built through cooperation. At sites of parallel pilgrimage, people may negotiate with others and form alliances that allow them access to otherwise denied resources. In addition, people who form alliances benefit from a multiplier effect—meaning the resources of a group are greater than the sum of its parts. Group membership carries with it a form of power, or social capital that can only be established and maintained by “reacknowledgement of proximity”—that is, “relations of proximity in physical (geographical) space or even in economic and social space.” The chapter then looks at the changing proximal relationships in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints around the Kirtland Temple.

Abstract:
Family members of ICU patients can have mental, physical, and social responses to critical illness. These responses can begin when their loved ones are in the ICU and persist after discharge. Interventions in the ICU could have long-term effects on family members. Communication, proximity, engagement, maintaining family integrity, optimizing sleep, and conflict resolution may all play a role in family health following the discharge or death of the patient. Research is needed to further quantify the epidemiology, mechanisms of action, and efficacy of interventions to optimize the health of this large group of people. While waiting for research results to definitively point us towards effective preventive measures and early interventions, it is prudent to optimize communication, encourage proximity and engagement, and support the health of family members while caring for the critically ill and injured. As patients and their families move into the home environment, it is important to consider their long-term health as well.

Abstract:
In rural areas, in order to respond to economic and social needs, the co-operative movement has always developed entrepreneurship models based on democracy, solidarity, responsibility of actors, proximity, transparency, and consideration of future generations. Amongst others, the 11,500 farm machinery co-operatives (coopératives d’utilisation de matériel agricole or ‘Cuma’) which are active in the French countryside can testify to this dynamism.
