Abstract:
The proliferation of technology led to a growing number of groups who interact through a mediated channel. A group of people creates a social network that consists of a workflow network, a communications network, and a friendship network. It referred to the existence of either a professional or a friendship network. As an individual who tends to gather as a group, journalists using a set of communication technology to connect to those who have the same interest and give a benefit to them. This study will identify the technology-mediated communication networks followed by journalists, that is, workflow networks, communication networks, and friendship networks. Then, how the attribute of networks, and how journalists still exist as well as leaves in those networks. In this study, a technology-mediated communication network refers to WhatsApp instant messaging groups. The researcher using a case study as a research strategy that has focused on online and print journalists. The researcher did this research during Pandemic Covid-19, so it affected data gathering. The data collecting technique has done by face-to-face interviews with journalists at a different time and by imposing health protocol. The result of this study shows that multimedia journalists enrolled in workflow networks and friendship networks that consist of the employee under one media company. These networks are more stabilized and long-lasting. Also, journalists become a member of communication networks which are consist of journalists from different media companies, public relations officer, or the executive of its company. These networks are more temporary. The more multimedia journalist workload, the higher the need for communication networks. Journalists will decide to join, to leave, or still exist in a network if the administrator can maintain the dynamic of its network. In other words, a network administrator should choose a member selectively, treat all members fairly, pay attention to qualities and quantities of information shared, and lastly to ensure that the network gives benefits to journalists. Abstract:
Abstract. The article analyzes the process of communication between state institutions and society. The study found that all aspects of communication between government institutions and society today acquire the characteristics of digital communication. This means that for the process of communication between government and society, its interactivity, multimedia, efficiency, extraterritoriality become relevant. It is also characteristic that the communication of state institutions and society acquires certain systemic properties — emergence, inherence, integrity. Also, as a result of the analytical study, there is a significant disparity in the access of different groups of the population to modern information and communication technologies and, as a consequence, the formation of different levels of their uptake by these groups of the population. Therefore, to increase the efficiency of communications, the subjects of the communication process should use a system of different channels of information transmission and use not a single concept, but a system of communication concepts to ensure national security and socio-economic stability. It is proven that the basis and guarantee of the formation and introduction of a systematic conceptual approach to the practical application of information and communication technologies of state institutions and society is the inevitable end-to-end digitalization of Ukraine. The process of digitalization will lead to a change in social and political activities of citizens, the formation of social strata, which is the germ of the information society and will require intellectual communication. The existence of a system of communication concepts has led to the use of a systematic approach to create an algorithm for the formation and implementation of effective communications of state institutions and society. The complex of requirements to the specified system of communications is formed due to the research. This system should be aimed at reconciling and harmonizing the interests and positions of communities of citizens; integration of social communities, optimization of administrative activity based on democratic values and observance of citizens’ rights. It also proposes areas of work to fulfill the tasks facing state institutions and society to harmonize the information and communication process and to form the basis of social stability and guarantee national security. Abstract:
The use of digital tools in marketing communications has become an obvious precondition for a successful business. At the same time, the modern concept of holistic marketing establishes that the purpose of marketing communications is to promote business of a firm, which includes not only the promotion of its goods and services, but also the management of its relations with all stakeholders. These provisions fully apply to Ukrainian industrial enterprises that seek to develop foreign sales markets. In the paper the concept of a site was chosen as the key term for research of marketing online communications. From the standpoint of their purpose, sites represent different types of social media that make it easier for their users to communicate and exchange multimedia information with each other. Websites are viewed as marketing communication channels that use certain methods to promote business activities. This raises the problem of integrating promotion channels into a single marketing communications system. The paper is devoted to the analysis of methods of promoting business activities of enterprises using social media sites and their systematization to create integrated marketing communications. We have classified websites according to the role they can play in integrated business promotion. It has been established that one should highlight the official sites of an enterprise promoting its business activities and the sites used to obtain information services. Many enterprises have two official websites: a representative one for presenting their business activities and a transactional one for e-commerce. The developers of information services sites are their owners, for whom the provision of these services constitutes the content of their business activity. These sites include social media supporting email, social networks, blogs, instant messengers. The analysis of the main methods of promotion in various social media is carried out. It allows one to establish the necessary logical connections between the promotion processes through various communication channels for their integration into a single system.

Abstract:
How do people use media technologies in everyday life and how do they make sense of them? This is one of the core questions in media and communication studies, gaining even more in relevance in light of the rapidly changing, convergent media environment. Yet, rich and context-sensitive data about media and technology use are difficult to generate when media consumption is increasingly pervasive, ubiquitous, and often goes on in passing. At the same time, the full potential of smartphones in qualitative research has not yet been realized. The mobile instant messaging interview (MIMI) introduced and assessed in this paper is intended to fill this gap by exploiting some of the unique communication and multimedia features offered by mobile instant messaging apps. Drawing on diary techniques and on the tried and tested mobile experience sampling method (MESM), the MIMI uses WhatsApp for an in situ exploration of distinct settings and situations of social action (e.g., media usage). To substantiate the approach, the results of a pilot study conducted with young smartphone users are presented, discussing the advantages and drawbacks of mobile instant messaging interviews in detail, from the researcher’s as well as the participant’s point of view.

Abstract:
This paper illustrates a model for Online Group Collaborative Learning. The authors based the foundation of the Online Collaborative Design Model upon Piaget’s concepts of assimilation and accommodation, and Vygotsky’s theory of social interaction. The four components of online collaborative learning include: individual processes, the task(s) students work on, group member processes, and communication media. These elements become key components beginning with the theoretical framework, the models used, and implementation of the models. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Online Collaborative Design Model and student feedback related to its implementation in an online course. The model was piloted in a required multimedia graduate course using a problem-based learning approach. Students used synchronous chat rooms and asynchronous discussion boards for course discussions and for the final group project. The instructor, to gain an understanding of the piloted implementation of the Online Collaborative Design Model, gathered final reflections about collaboration and the final project. The reflections revealed that students sensed a connection between productivity and trust. Further research into the impact trust has on the interpersonal communications of the group and the intrapersonal communications of the individual would give interesting insights into the model.

In recent years it appears interest in the interaction between humans and computers. Facial expressions play a fundamental role in social interaction with other humans. In two human communications is only 7% of communication due to language linguistic message, 38% due to paralanguage, while 55% through facial expressions. Therefore, to facilitate human machine interface more friendly on multimedia products, the facial expression recognition on interface very helpful in interacting comfort. One of the steps that affect the facial expression recognition is the accuracy in facial feature extraction. Several approaches to facial expression recognition in its extraction does not consider the dimensions of the data as input features of machine learning Through this research proposes a wavelet algorithm used to reduce the dimension of data features. Data features are then classified using SVM-multiclass machine learning to determine the difference of six facial expressions are anger, hatred, fear of happy, sad, and surprised Jaffe found in the database. Abstract:
The article considers self-regulated learning in the multimedia environment as one of the leading forms of solving the problems of modern education, especially in crisis situations. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the main problems of this form of learning. There are a number of pedagogical conditions for the productive organization of the educational process in an online format. The study of scientific and methodological literature on the main issues of this problem has shown, on the one hand, the powerful potential of online learning as an environment with a vast amount of information for learning and development, opportunities for social contact and communication, as well as the platform, impulse and motivating factor for the development of learning throughout life. On the other hand, the negative factors of organizing the educational process in the multimedia environment, as well as their lack of knowledge, require close attention. It is obvious that immersion in the multimedia environment predetermines the threat of "depersonalization" and "depersonalized communication", which limits the individualization of learning. The study shows that overabundance of information deserves special attention, which can quickly lead to cognitive overload of partners in cooperation in the field of training. It is emphasized that online learning is in no way an alternative to traditional forms of learning, and the multimedia environment is a useful addition and enrichment of the latter.

Abstract:
It is difficult to imagine the life of each person in a state of information vacuum, so it is naturalthat information becomes the main value of today. And the main tools in the process of its disseminationare mass media, in particular electronic media. The Internet is gradually becoming a universal, allencompassing communication environment for us, connecting many people, regardless of distances andnational borders. The online audience is steadily multiplying and therefore the impact of thiscommunication channel on the society is increasing. As the audience grows, there is a steady increase inthe amount of time people spend each day in the online communication process. Social networks arerapidly outpacing the "old" comprehensible media, benefiting from feedback from the audience. Theylisten to the wishes of readers / viewers, become an authoritative information channel. All this speaks tothe urgent need for effective regulatory regulation of the activity of social networks, such as electronicmedia, by the state. Social networks have ceased to be typical tools for the transmission of information; itis a fully segregated structure that requires "working" laws, with a clear conceptual apparatus. Theyhave long been the holders of rights and responsibilities, endowed with constitutional personality, aselectronic media. The article is devoted to research of real factors of activity of modern events as specialelectronic data of mass information. Investigated the validity of advanced measures to modern massmedia. The essence of the concept of "media", "social media", "multimedia" is analyzed. Thesubstantiated comprehension of the rigid measures, as not singled out by the element of constitutionaldevelopment, is outlined. The authors emphasize the importance of international events in the constructedinstitute of the "e-country" V. O. Zelensky. The article attempted to stimulate positive changes in thelegislature concerning the issues of electronic data of the mass media, necessary, as well as reliablechanges. Abstract:
Abstract Media use in the teaching process occurs in several forms. Information and communication technologies can be used as work equipment and teaching aids, as well as tools or curriculum units, particularly in higher education. Technological changes and new information technologies, in addition to substantive knowledge of the material, require from teachers creativity, knowledge, and the skills of the didactic design of teaching using modern multimedia tools. In Croatia, there is a lack of research aimed at assessing the initial state of computer literacy within the higher education institutions. The aim of this study was to determine the level of knowledge and digital competence of (non) teachers of higher education institutions in the Republic of Croatia, to determine the frequency of application of modern technologies in teaching, and to explain the necessity of implementation of the programme Multimedia training and e-learning at teaching faculties, which leads to the application of new educational paradigms. The study was conducted on a representative sample (N=1800) of (non) teachers of higher education institutions in the Republic of Croatia among various faculties and departments in Osijek, Split and Zagreb. The results show that (non) teachers of higher education institutions of engineering and information sciences have the best digital competences, and apply modern technology in research and scientific work significantly more than (non) teachers of social sciences and humanities.

Abstract:
With the integration of social media in journalism practice, media training institutions must focus on preparing future media professionals with the right mix of digital skills for the industry. Although efforts to improve students’ online skills readiness are evident in schools, no reliable tool exists to assess students’ confidence in doing online journalism tasks upon graduation. This study develops and validates an Online Journalism Self-Efficacy Scale (OJSES) that can be used to measure mass communication students’ perceptions of their self-efficacy for online journalism work. Items for the proposed scale were developed from a comprehensive literature review and refined by eight online journalism professionals (five online journalism lecturers and three online news editors). To explore the factor structure of the tool, exploratory factor analysis of data from a sample of finalist undergraduate mass communication students (n = 182) in five Rwandan universities was done. Results suggested that the OJSES is a five-dimensional tool that comprises 27 items. This scale measures online journalism self-efficacy in terms of students’ capabilities to conduct online journalism research, communicate with social media tools, create and share multimedia content online, observe ethical online publishing and use social media to solve organizational problems. The scale demonstrated reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.785 and the five self-efficacy dimensions explaining 51.1 per cent of the total variance. The scale’s psychometric soundness implied its suitability not only to empirically measure the students’ confidence in working in online environments but also guide capacity-building for the required online skills for the media industry.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: In this paper, we analyze the phenomenon of “classroom WhatsApp groups”, in which a teacher and students from a particular classroom interact with one another, while specifically focusing on the student perspective of these interactions. Background: The instant messaging application WhatsApp enables quick, interactive multimedia communication in closed groups, as well as one-on-one interactions between selected group members. Yet, very little is known about the extent, nature, and purposes of these practices, the limitations and affordances, the type of discourse and conflicts that develop in these spaces, and the extent to which it affects teacher-student interactions outside of WhatsApp (e.g., the social climate in class, the teacher’s status, teacher-student and student-student relations), especially from the students’ perspective. Methodology: Our methodology combines questionnaires, personal interviews, and focus groups with Israeli secondary school students (N = 88). Contribution: The present study adds to the expanding body of empirical research on social media use in educational settings by specifically focusing on a heretofore underexposed aspect, namely, secondary school student-teacher communication in the popular instant messaging application WhatsApp. We report on findings from the student perspective and discuss the advantages and limitations of this form of communication sphere, and on the social functions of the different classroom WhatsApp groups in secondary school students’ everyday life. Findings: The combined findings reveal that classroom WhatsApp groups have become a central channel of communication for school-related topics. It is used primarily for organizational purposes (sending and receiving updates and managing learning activities), as well as a means for teachers to enforce discipline. Students mentioned many advantages of WhatsApp communication, such as easy access, the ability to create communities, the ability to safeguard personal privacy, and the communication format (written, mediated, personal, or group). However, they also recognized limitations (i.e., communication overload) and challenged teacher ability to monitor and affect student interactions in social media, even when they are present in these WhatsApp classroom groups. Finally, we report on the role of parallel, sans-teacher WhatsApp groups, which are characterized as back stage discourse arenas that accompany the front stage offline classroom activities and the “official” classroom WhatsApp group. Recommendations for Practitioners: The combined findings of this study indicate how WhatsApp-based, joint teacher-student groups can serve a variety of educational purposes, namely, organizational, instructional, and educational-disciplinary. In addition, and in spite of teachers concerns, students are aware of the challenges inherent to the use of WhatsApp for communication with their teachers. Some of the main characteristics that prevent teachers from using other ubiquitous digital communication media, such as Facebook or Twitter, are not relevant when it comes to WhatsApp. Both teachers and students view WhatsApp as a favored channel of communication because of the low exposure to personal information and minimal invasion of privacy. Future Research: The qualitative methodology of this paper limits the ability to generalize the current findings to other contexts and population groups. Future research should preferably explore the generalizability of our findings to larger sections of teenage populations. It should also explore similarities and differences with other age groups. Finally, the present study was set in a particular country (Israel). Local norms of cellphone use and of appropriate teacher-student interaction, as well as locally developed media domestication patterns, may differ from country to country and/or from one cultural group to another. Future research should then include and compare the current findings with data from different countries and cultures in order to complete the picture.

The paper is devoted to the study of the actual topic of the formation and development of communicative-cultural dialogue in the context of continuous segmentation of society. The latter was touched upon by f E. Toffler and it increases both the vertical (intergenerational) and horizontal (social) division. This problem is closely related to another topical issue — the formation of historical memory, without which it is impossible to imagine the unity of the country and public dialogue. The creators of modern multimedia projects have proposed a new communication format, a new way of talking about the past of the country and the world. Game storytelling can be safely called a new type of media text in demand. Research of the projects “1917. This paper aims at providing insights into this behavior, including actions that follow-up as a response to television advertising. Results of a quantitative study performed on a sample of 135 university students from Slovakia using a six-component behavior explanation model. The results reveal that it still can be beneficial to include television advertisements in the communication mix aimed at these young consumers. The investments in TV advertising campaigns could pay off. The advertisers and their agencies should respect the role of high search visibility in this process. In this case, the messages contained in TV advertisements have the potential to influence the purchasing behavior of young consumers. Thanks to achieving top ranking for the relevant brand, product, and campaign-related keywords, communication campaigns can become truly integrated. Thus, the component of search visibility directly influences the efficiency of marketing communication, contributing to enhanced business performance. The process of communication opens up the possibility of a perception of communicative and cultural memory by the digital generation, which is in the process of socialization and awareness of cultural identity. We suggest methodological development and the testing of research methods into the transformation of communicative and cultural memory and ways of its transmission from the analogue to the digital generation of Russians. The proposed scientific and practical concept assumes the development of three basic directions. The first is related to the study of the general process of transformation of syncretic communicative and cultural memory in the digital environment. The second involves the study and modelling of media texts. Addressing the strategies of organizing multimedia narration and linguistic and statistical peculiarities of big data makes it possible to identify the language and conceptual markers of communicative and cultural memory in the texts of two different generations. Finally, the third one is related to the identification of the specifics of media consumption by generations, which implies the actualization of the transformation of journalistic competencies to work in the modern digital environment. These directions are developed using several approaches and methods: social-communication, cognitive, structural-semiotic, sociocultural, and linguistic. Such an interdisciplinary approach is necessary for the comprehensive study of intergenerational transmission of communicative and cultural memory.

Abstract:
English educators are responsible for preparing pre-service and in-service teachers to consider the ways in which people engage in meaning making by using a variety of representation, interpretive and communication systems. Today new technologies are radically changing the types of texts people create and interpret even as they are influencing the social, political and cultural contexts in which texts are shared. This research project was designed to immerse pre-service English education students in the creation of multimodal, multimedia texts as part of a digital composing workshop. For the purposes of this paper, three student experiences were drawn from a group of twelve pre-service English education students participating in the project. Each student represents a unique experience from which we may draw insight and direction as English educators. Despite the ever present barriers to integrating afterschool (Prensky, 2010) literacy practices into traditional schools and to ensure what we are teaching has the important element of “life validity” ( Mills, 2010) and reflects the evolving socio cultural literacy practices of contemporary society, English educators must provide authentic, engaging opportunities for pre-service teachers to learn about and through multimedia, multimodal digital technologies.

Abstract:
AbstractCollective memories are multiple discursive practices, in which social representations about a common past are used to build and maintain cohesion and identity of groups socio-historically located at a socio-culturally determined moment and to project future in frameworks of rights and dignity. It is understood that the memories articulated to the Colombian armed conflict are diverse: different stories of violence, oppression and resistance of peoples, communities and groups are identified and made explicit. Thirty media narratives distributed in the ElTiempo.com Special “Thirty encounters with peace” (2017) comprise the universe of research. The sample is made up of seven narratives that propose the sense of testimony. The selected format is storytelling, which is built in the special edition of the newspaper as a communication proposal for the reconstruction of the social fabric, within the year after the signing of the Peace Agreement between the National Government and the FARC-EP (post-agreement). The research is nucleated on situations of rights violations linked to the conflict, and the proposals derived from these narratives, as regards the overcoming of the exercises of violence to which they refer. The analysis is assumed from the principles of Multimodal and Multimedia Critical Discourse Studies (MMCDS). The forms of representation in the discourses, their multimodal articulations and the multimedia implications in the production of meanings are articulated; the final aim is to derive sociopolitical consequences of the discursive proposal, constructed and socialized in the narratives of the special edition of the newspaper.

Abstract:
This article discusses the opportunities and constraints in using a digital family ethnography for qualitative studies amongst Indonesians in Australia. The frst half of the article highlights the opportunities that online and offine participant observation can provide in terms of understanding family transnational networks. Going beyond an ego-based narrative approach in interviews, digital family ethnography shows how social network analysis and refexivity can bring depth to a study on family by including the researcher’s position vis-à-vis the research participants. The second half of the article discusses challenges in using these combined online and offine methods and how these challenges might be mitigated in future studies. In particular, the article look at problems faced with interviews, multimedia usage, and social media analysis related to the researcher’s background and in working with different age groups. In the transnational family context, social media and electronic communication are critical parts of contemporary ethnographic methodologies, and the discussion thus centres on including online personhood in the research. The study concludes that although digital family ethnography methodologies have limitations, they can be used to account for the transforming relationships that make up family mobility.

Abstract:
Research on language development suggests that children from low-income families hear nearly 30 million words less than their higher income counterparts (Hart & Risley, 1999). This paper explores parent perceptions and attitudes toward two mobile interventions (Text4baby and Univision Contigo) designed to support parents’ engagement with their young children as a way of reducing the language gap and improving child outcomes. We conducted eight focus groups with parents who were users of either service. Using general inductive analysis of the transcript data, we found that parents enrolled in the Text4baby service were relatively unaware of the video text messages and almost never clicked the links. Univision Contigo users, on the other hand, more frequently recalled seeing videos encouraging parent–child interaction and particularly liked that these videos came as multimedia messages (MMS). We interpret findings through a social cognitive theory lens and provide recommendations for incorporating video into parent-targeted mobile interventions.

Abstract:
Abstract Multimedia communication through social media has been experiencing constantly growing significance in the field of airline marketing. The aim of the research presented in this paper was to find out and, with the help of both qualitative and quantitative analyses, describe the way YouTube is used by airlines. The research was conducted in the form of a comparative study with the objective of identifying the difference between YouTube performance of full-service carriers (FSCs) and low-cost carriers (LCCs). The intention was to identify which factors influence the effectiveness of airline marketing conducted via YouTube an as well as the way in which they do it. Analysis of selected data was facilitated by social media analytics tool SocialBakers, content analyses and a correlation analysis of YouTube metrics, selected on the base of previous research results. The research data were collected twice during the year 2017 in order to reflect changes over time. Research results showed that FSCs build their YouTube channels more systematically than LCCs. FSCs offer a substantially wider range of video topics and often sort out topics of their videos in a more detailed way. Regarding the basic metrics of YouTube channels (total number of views, number of subscribers), FSCs surpass LCCs significantly. One reason for their much higher rate of views is the fact that FSCs use celebrities more frequently, and frequently they offer high-quality impression/relationship airline presentation.

Abstract:
Introduction: the article is one of the first in Russian philology and journalism theory experience of the system analysis of the process of digitalization of communicative and cultural memory as a phenomenon, and problems of its intergenerational translation in the media space of a multi-ethnic region. Objective: to identify and analyze trends in the development of Yugra media sphere in the context of permanent social and technological transformations based on the ethno-cultural specificity of media texts; to identify and describe the resources of productive intergenerational communication. Research materials: the results of the latest research in the field of philological regionalism, cultural studies and communication studies. The empirical basis was a discourse analysis of 212 mass media texts and a survey of 177 respondents. Results and novelty of the research: the result of the research is a conceptual justification of the concept of «model of effective activity of mass media of Yugra», as well as identification of their role and ways of effective functioning in digital reality. For the first time, mass media are considered as the main translators of discursive practices related to the formation and development of communicative and cultural memory in a multi-ethnic region. The article notes that the problems of effective functioning of global media systems of the digital age cannot be systematically analyzed without highlighting the mechanisms of transformation of communicative and cultural memory at the regional level. The pluralistic media environment of Yugra is a unique object of research that allows us to determine the fundamental factors of building of the multicultural community. The research conducted by the authors makes it possible to substantiate approaches that contribute to overcoming digital generational gaps in the society, including a model approach to the problem of mass media performance. The model is defined as an action whose predictive characteristics in digital reality should be based primarily on the identification of emotional and semantic dominants of multimedia texts and the nature of respondents ‘ media preferences.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness of mobile messaging for the purposes of information sharing and social networking based on the types of social ties involved. The authors identify two psychological traits in the model: perceived time shortages (TSs) and anxiety trait. These traits can influence individuals’ mobile-messaging usage by facilitating users’ connections to different social ties in modern urban life. Design/methodology/approach – The authors distributed questionnaires at random on the streets of certain densely populated areas in Hong Kong to young urbanites, who are the dominant users of technological social media. The authors collected 492 valid responses, which the authors analysed via multivariate regression analysis. Findings – Mobile messages are more effectively used to share information within strongly tied groups rather than weakly tied groups. However, there is little difference between weakly and strongly connected groups in terms of the perceived effectiveness of mobile messages used for social networking. Anxious people are more inclined to send mobile messages to individuals with whom they have weak ties, and people who perceived TSs send more mobile messages to individuals with whom they have strong ties. Research limitations/implications – The rapid nature of information and communication technology has enabled new “richer” forms of mobile media. For instance, WhatsApp allows people to attach images and other multimedia files to their messages, and WeChat provides a location-sharing service that enables users to meet new people based on their friendship preferences. Future studies should examine this trend. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature by elaborating the mobile-messaging behaviour of urban citizens who are anxious and perceive TSs within strongly and weakly connected social groups.

Abstract:
Purpose The technology determinism theory facilitated in assessing the impact of interactive radio and social network sites (SNSs) on development factors such as education, agriculture, health, and governance, by conducting an integrative and comprehensive literature review focusing on African countries. This paper aims to conduct this literature review to provide comprehensive empirical evidence on the impact of interactive radio and SNSs on development in Africa. Design/methodology/approach This study examined articles that were retrieved from online databases including EBSCOhost, Elsevier, Science Direct, SAGE Journals, Springer and Wiley Online Library. The keywords used included interactive radio, radio, development in Africa, SNS, agriculture, education, health, peace and governance. Search phrases were formulated using boolean operators “AND” and “OR.” Findings Study results revealed that interactive radio and SNSs improve knowledge among farmers and allow the dissemination of information on innovative agricultural techniques, which supports the adoption of sustainable practices. Interactive radio promotes political accountability because the strategies provide the voiceless and powerless communities with a platform to express themselves. This paper discovers that the incorporation of SNS with existing multimedia communication facilitates the dissemination of health-related information on illnesses such as Ebola, HIV, hypertension, diabetes and Polio, and interactive radio and SNS promote education among marginalized communities and under-served rural schools. Research limitations/implications The findings on the impact of interactive radio and SNSs do not represent all 54 countries in Africa. Although the studies included in this literature review were conducted in several countries such as South Africa, Nigeria, Somalia, Kenya, Malawi, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, this limited the generalizability of the findings and recommendations. Also, the other potential limitation is that using the inclusion-exclusion criteria could have resulted in bias when selecting the studies to include in the review. Practical implications The paper might serve as a valuable source of information for students, academics and entrepreneurs where the impact of interactive radio and SNSs on agriculture, education, health and governance, which are core determinants of development in Africa, has been assessed for further case studies in this area. Social implications The use of interactive radio has helped in decreasing health issues caused by a deficiency in vitamin A among children in sub-Saharan Africa. Originality/value The development of sustainable and effective interactive radio programs is dependent on the collaboration of the core stakeholders such as governmental ministries, donor organizations and the mass communication sector. Numerous open sources on technology radio stations are available to employ social media managers to help in the application of knowledge.
