Adeleke, Cecily Joy. "Corporate Social Responsibility in the Nigerian Banking Sector." ScholarWorks, 2014. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/85.

Full text
Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility is presently defined by the World Business Council of Sustainable Development as persistent commitment by businesses to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while also increasing the quality of life of employees, their families, and the community. Guided by Freeman's stakeholder theory, this study examined the relationship between corporate social responsibility and the Nigerian bankers' reported satisfaction with the Nigerian banking sector. Survey data were collected from a convenience sample of 99 Nigerian bankers, including branch managers, zonal managers, tellers, marketers, and investors. A single-stage sampling procedure was used to elicit their satisfaction with the Nigerian banking sector and their perceptions of corporate social responsibility. Corporate social responsibility was conceptualized as a composite variable, with dependent sub-variables of ethics, human rights, and employee rights. A Pearson's r correlation test indicated a significant relationship between corporate social responsibility and Nigerian banker satisfaction (p < .05). These findings suggest that a majority of Nigerian bankers are satisfied with the banking sector which they feel, overall, behaves in a socially responsible way, although they also noted concerns related to insider abuse and a lack of transparency among internal processes. Implications for positive social change include informing policy makers and regulatory agencies in Nigeria about changes to public policy and the regulatory banking environment about risks associated with insider abuse and other internal processes in the banking industry that may damage efforts to improve corporate social responsibility with the goal of enhancing economic development in Nigeria.

Alrumaihi, Hanin A. A. R. O. "Corporate social responsibility in the banking industry in Kuwait." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/14866.

Abstract:
As a result of globalization, the concept of Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) has become on the agendas of organizations over the past decade. The organizations in Kuwait are no exception; they have been striving to address and execute the best practices of CSR. The banking sector in Kuwait, which plays a pivotal role in the economy, represents an area of strong interest for anyone wanting to research the depiction of CSR in Kuwait since it was the first sector that introduced corporate social responsibility and is considered a pioneer in that field. However, no studies were found that have examined CSR policies in practice in Kuwait or in the banking sector in particular. This thesis therefore focuses on obtaining a better understanding of how corporate social responsibility works in practice in the Kuwaiti banks from the perspective of three groups: the decision makers of CSR in the Kuwaiti banks, the employees of the banks, and the banks’ customers. The researcher used a qualitative approach in which data were collected using interviews and document analysis. The collected data were interpreted and analysed and thereafter drawn the conclusion that banks are very clear in defining their CSR objectives which are aligned with their overall corporate strategy. However, there were commonalities and differences in how stakeholders understand and perceive CSR. The study also revealed that both the 2008 financial crisis and Islam influenced the way CSR is exercised in the banks, and moderately, influenced the employees and customers.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate extent to which Australian banking corporations embrace social responsibility. It endeavours to establish the meaning of social responsibility generally and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in particular. In view of the multiple definitions of the concept of ‘social responsibility’ offered by various authors Such.1 Boatright (1993), Freeman (1994), Walters (1977), and Wheeler (1998), the views of power dependent Australian bank stakeholders were solicited to form an operational definition for the study. This created a collective conception of social responsibility as it is applied to Australian banks, allowing corporate social responsibility standards to be established against which perceived social responsibility performance of Australian banks could be compared.

In the first chapter, we begin with a survey on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in economics, management and business literatures. Then we identify the peculiarities of the agents operating in the social banking sector. Thereafter, we compare and contrast the contributions focused on the behavior of social banks with those available on traditional lenders. The second chapter compares the refinancing behavior of social banks with that of standard lenders when the former have inside information on the quality of the borrowers. This entails the renowned hold-up problem which, however, can be mitigated by the costs of the ethical screening and monitoring activities of social banks. As a result, standard banks may offer better loan contracts and attract high quality borrowers. The third chapter proposes a spatial competition model to investigate how standard and social banks set their interest rates when they compete in the deposit and loan markets. As the empirical evidence suggests, social depositors are willing to accept returns lower than the market level. Therefore we determine under which conditions social banks pay deposit rates lower than those of standard banks and when this is compatible with lower rates also on loans.

Abstract:
The study investigates corporate social responsibility (CSR) theory to contribute to knowledge about CSR within the setting of a developing economy. In this thesis, the specific opportunities and challenges of financial institutions pursuing CSR are examined in depth. This study presents a portrayal of CSR, addressing its role and insight into how CSR is understood and practised. The study draws on an interpretive approach and investigates within a multiple case study context. The choice of cases is based on theoretical sampling, to advance knowledge in the phenomenon by looking at it in non-Western settings. The three cases are selected purposefully within the context of a developing economy: Ghana. The data collection and analysis use multiple data sources from semi-structured interviews of key management informants and archival documents which are analysed according to qualitative data protocols. The data is interpreted via thematic analysis within and across the cases to generate rich insights into the nature of CSR and its practices within their setting. The study recognises the emergent divergent and convergent issues of CSR across the cases with relation to enfolding the literature which involves inquiring with different literature the similarities and contradictions with the research findings. This process helps to link the study with the existing body of knowledge, as well as advance knowledge in CSR. Based on the analysis, this study suggests that there is a strong orientation towards philanthropy on what is classified as CSR. It reveals that the context in which CSR is practised is complex and situationally dependent, with particular influencing factors such as social welfare issues and culture driving societal expectations and business decisions on CSR. This study offers a revised model of CSR, suggesting a non-linear relationship with the integrated and porous dynamics between the various CSR components which thus provides insight into the nature of CSR in the banking sector in Ghana. The findings of the research can provide both academics and managers with valuable information on CSR practice in a developing country context.

Ali, Basah Mohamad. "Corporate social responsibility and natural environmental risk management in the context of the banking sector of Malaysia." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2012. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/25064/.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has had a long and varied history since its beginnings in the 1930s with the seminal work of Berle and Means. Many occidental studies regarding CSR have concentrated on natural environmental management and the influence of social and culture differences on such management. However, such research has not as yet been undertaken to any significant extent in the Malaysian context. To fill this gap, the present study therefore investigated environmental management in Malaysia’s banking sector, and the methods deployed by bank managers in evaluating and accommodating environmental risk in the credit assessment process. Malaysia was chosen as the study location because it is a multi racial country and has a dual banking system (conventional and Islamic banking). These characteristics enabled the study to investigate the influence of cultural and institutional differences on credit evaluation orientations, stakeholders’ group activism and perceptions, and general CSR orientations. To achieve the study aims, a questionnaire survey was designed to collect data from managers and executives in corporate banking departments whose main task is to evaluate loan applications, especially in project financing. The findings obtained from analyses of the data collected suggested that Malaysia’s banking sector has, in general, good environmental management practice. However, local banks’ environmental management practice falls short of that of international banks. It was also found that Islamic banks have better environmental management practice than conventional banks. As regards the credit evaluation process, the study findings suggested that environmental criteria are of secondary importance compared to financial and economic criteria. The study also found that cultural and institutional differences influenced the attitude of bank managers towards environmental management practice. Thus, to improve such practice in the future, these factors should be taken account of in the environmental policy development process if future rules and regulations, including environmental laws, are to gain widespread acceptance across racial and religious boundaries.

Lam, Aris. "The impact of corporate social responsibility on customer loyalty : a study of the banking industry in Hong Kong." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/3071.

Abstract:
Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city and the world’s third leading financial hub with a mature economy and highly competitive financial market. Despite growing interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR), empirical studies on banks were not available in Hong Kong. Hence, the author conducted research on CSR using the three note-issuing multinational banks (HSBC, BOC and SCB). The research question is “Does corporate social responsibility contribute positively to customer attitudinal loyalty of the banks in Hong Kong?”, and a CSR framework was used to investigate the influence of CSR on loyalty, mediated by perceived service quality and trust. It distinguished the CSR requirements of primary and secondary stakeholders, and introduced business practice CSR that influences the former and philanthropic CSR that affects the latter. An SEM research framework was developed and data were collected through survey questionnaires from 329 customers of the three banks. Statistical analysis was conducted using AMOS and SPSS. Research findings confirmed the relationships between perceived service quality, trust and attitudinal loyalty. Business practice CSR reputation targeting primary stakeholders was found to have a strong relationship with perceived quality and trust, but the relationship between philanthropic CSR reputation and trust was insignificant. The study has linked CSR to stakeholders, adapted a model from a business-to-business empirical study, and provided insight for mediating factors, perspectives on strategic CSR and a new CSR definition.

Abstract:
Corporate Social Responsibility is gaining prominence in business, in government, in society and in the academic field. Nevertheless, it is still not possible to identify a common definition or a set of core principles about the subject. Researchers still debate the means of being socially responsible or even whether companies should have social responsibilities. Another discussion refers to the financial impacts of Corporate Social Responsibility. While some authors claim that the adoption of social and environmental practices improve financial performance, others argue that the practices generates costs that businesses will never recover. Given this discussion, several authors argue that the mere engagement in activities considered socially responsible, does not guarantee the generation of benefits to businesses, but rather whether the practices are aligned with the Strategy. Thus, the present work aims to study how the alignment between Corporate Social Responsibility and Strategy is designed. To reach that goal, the theoretical foundation was made on the subject, followed by a field research in a bank company, recognized for best practices in Corporate Social Responsibility. The study is exploratory, qualitative approached and conducted by Case Study. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews and secondary data through the Sustainability Reports of the investigated company and through reports from other institutions that work with the theme in the banking sector. The results showed that, currently, the company deals with the Corporate Social Responsibility through the concept of Sustainability and adopts a proactive posture. Those responsible for the strategic thinking of the company recognize the importance of the issue and promote changes in their strategies, changing long-term visions, organizational structures and business practices. The process of aligning the subject with the Strategy of the company is done primarily through dialogue with stakeholders, the choice of issues considered strategic, the involvement of senior management and the various business areas and monitoring results. The study contributes to the formation of the construct of Corporate Social Responsibility and the distinction between this concept and Sustainability. Moreover, contribute to increase the knowledge about the strategic implications of Corporate Social Responsibility and the complex relationship between Financial Performance and Social Performance. The survey also indicates some barriers to the management of social and environmental issues. The main one is the lack of knowledge and practical tools to deal with the issue.

Abstract:
The dissertation thesis investigates the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance (FP) on the sample of 51 Eurozone banks over the period from 2008 to 2014. The investigation is based on a panel data regression analysing the financial data from Bankscope and the social performance data from CSRHub. Return on assets and the ratio of non-performing loans to total loans represent the measures of financial performance and are used as dependent variables. The results of this model have shown a positive and statistically significant CSR-FP relationship. It is argued that even though the results show statistical significance, they do not necessarily include such a strong informational value. This is caused by methodological limitations, such as potentially biased data on CSR, as well as by the theoretical ones. The main theoretical concern, detected in the dissertation thesis, is a need for redefinition of the banks' driving motives of engaging in CSR activities. Banks engaging in CSR activities for merely strategic reasons should be analysed separately on a firm-level as they may otherwise bias the empirical results. Another important aspect of the work was an argument that banks benefit from CSR mainly through the product differentiation. This could not have been tested empirically, but it is assumed that the product differentiation, for example through reputation enhancement, may play a significant role in boosting bank's profits.

Abstract:
The “statement” from senior decision-maker is a section in the sustainability           report, where the most “senior decision-maker” of the institution (such as CEO,            chairman, or equivalent senior position) gives the personal view about the           relevance of sustainability to the institution and its strategy for addressing           sustainability. Such a statement is one medium used by company leaders to            communicate their attitudes and values to stakeholders in sustainability reports.          Under commercial circumstances, sustainability is also referred to as Corporate          Social Responsibility (CSR). This paper analyzes Chinese and Nordics senior decision-makers’ perception of CSR within the banking sector. The research sample consists of statements of senior decision-makers from sustainability reports of four Chinese banks, respective four Nordic banks. Previous studies show that CSR conception is influenced by cultural and social backgrounds. By analyzing respective Chinese/Nordic senior decision-maker’s statement, this study isaimingtofindout how Chinese/Nordic culture and social concepts are promoted in their respective bank institutions, and therefore lead to different CSR focus and strategies. The results from the study show that Chinese senior decision-makers’ statements are strongly influenced by traditional Chinese philosophy and social background, especially Confucian and Taoism, as well asXi Jinping’s guidelines delivered at the 19th National Congress of the Communist and the 13th Five-Year Plan. In relation to the Nordic senior decision-makers the gender equality and racial equality were noted. Senior decision-makers of Chinese banks mainly focus on “social stability and progress”, “economic responsibility”, and “customers”,while         senior decision-makers of Nordic banks mainly focus on “economic responsibility”, “customers”, and “environmental protection”.

Abstract:
The widespread use of Corporate Philanthropy (CP) in the US and the UK has resulted in a significant body of literature on the phenomena and its use. However, the literature generated around CP is criticised for being of an economic nature and for being biased toward the context of developed Western countries. This thesis suggests that the context of developing countries is important in relation to the non-economic nature of CP, due to the existence of intense religious beliefs and values. However, there has been little attempt to explicitly examine how the institutional pressures within this context shape the CP of a non-economic and more precisely of an altruistic nature, and how firms act in response to these influences. This thesis leverages institutional theory by proposing that stakeholders – including communities, competitors, NGOs and politicians – may impose coercive and mimetic pressures encouraging isomorphic field-level CP of a non-economic nature in a context of intense Islamic beliefs, values and norms. However, the way in which firms perceive and act upon these pressures may differ depending on specific factors related to the firm itself, including the identity of the firm, the competitive position of the firm, and shareholder pressures. These differences between firms result in the adoption of different CP strategies as decided by each firm, expressing its appropriate responses to field pressures. This study uses a qualitative methodology using data collected from 27 of the key personnel responsible for CP decisions (shareholders and managers) in the Kuwaiti banking sector. Questions were developed to assess the relationships between institutional pressures at the field and organisational levels of analysis. Data was collected through multiple sources such as in-depth interviews, documentation, and archival records. The contributions of the thesis are in relation to: a) the institutional theory; b) gaining more understanding of CP in developing countries; C) offering a robust understanding of altruistic CP influenced by an Islamic context; and d) practical implementations of CP in Islamic banks.

Full text
Abstract:
This research responds to calls for the establishment of an overriding rationale, or raison d'être, for public relations practice. Several scholars are suggesting that the construct of legitimacy provides an overarching rationale that would link public relations practice across organisations, industries and countries (Boyd, 2000; Massey, 2001; Metzler, 1995, 2001; van Ruler & Vercic, 2005; Vercic, van Ruler, Butschi, & Flodin, 2001). However, existing public relations studies using legitimacy have focused on the communicative aspects, with little emphasis on long term and societal level effects for organisations. In seeking to accommodate these challenges, the central research question of this thesis is: Does legitimacy provide a rationale for public relations practice, and if so, in what ways? This study draws on institutional theory, with its central imperative of legitimacy, to address this question. Institutional theory considers the relationship between organisations and environments from a social constructionist perspective. Institutions created through the social construction of reality are based on shared, rational myths of legitimacy which drive organisational and social action, and with which organisations need to demonstrate compliance through their organisational ceremonies or practices. These two central contributors to legitimacy -- rational myths and ceremonies -- provide the framework guiding the study. The study was conducted around issues about the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of the four major Australian banks. In order to consider relationships between public relations practice and legitimacy as an institutional concept, Giddens' theory of structuration is used as a theoretical apparatus to straddle the rational myths of legitimacy at the level of institution, with public relations practice related to ceremonies at the level of action. 'Structuring moments' identified in media coverage provide sites of microanalysis of the intense social construction of rational myths of legitimacy that include organisations and publics. Through these theoretical devices, a number of guiding research questions shape the study: RQ i): What is learned about the social construction of rational myths about legitimacy by studying media coverage about CSR in Australian banking? RQ ii): What is learned about legitimacy by studying public relations practices in relation to media coverage about CSR in Australia banking? A longitudinal, qualitative, case study approach was taken to explore the research questions in this study. As legitimacy was viewed as a process of ongoing social construction, a temporal bracketing strategy (Langley, 1999) was used to examine the relationships between the level of institution and of action over the six year period of the study. Media coverage, annual and social impact reports, and interviews were used as sources of data to examine the institutionalisation of corporate social responsibility in the Australian banking industry. The findings of the study show that there is a dynamic relationship between public relations and legitimacy at both theoretical and practical levels. Through the duality of structure lens, theoretically public relations can be conceived as agency and legitimacy as structure. The influence of these two dynamically interrelated levels of agency and structure is both constituted by human agency and is the medium of the institutions (Sewell, 1992). Public relations practices, therefore, can be seen as human agency that both shapes and is shaped by legitimacy. If legitimacy represents a dominant concept of organisational success, it is also a rationale for public relations practice as an act of human agency that seeks to create alignment between organisations and publics in their environment. As such, public relations practices are not just activities. Rather, public relations practices constitute a central resource that organisations can access to exert power to create and manage their legitimacy within the broader environment. Public relations practices, therefore, are resources because they are embedded within the deep structures of society that influence organisational practice, but also are actions that allow the organisation to shape those structural arrangements. This process takes place within webs of communication and relationships between organisations and publics that form institutionalised legitimacy. This study also found that public relations practice is a balance between the demands of time and space. The traditional focus of public relations studies has been on incidents of compressed time and space, such as crises and campaigns. This study suggests that expanded periods of time and space are also integral to how and why public relations make a contribution as, over time, there were shifts to the institutional arrangements that guide public relations practices. This suggests that there is a compression of time and space as organisations and publics communicate in their relationship and an expansion of time and space to shift frames of social structures and legitimacy. It is through this juxtaposition of time and space, and across dual levels of structure, that legitimacy provides a rationale for public relations practices. The conclusions of this research make a major contribution to public relations theory by building a model for considering how legitimacy provides a raison d'être for public relations practices. As such, the model developed in this research provides a theoretical framework of how public relations practices contribute to organisational legitimacy at a societal level. The study also provides deeper insights to the role of public relations practices in managing organisational legitimacy at the level of action. In doing so, it addresses theoretical and methodological issues of the conflation of publics and environment. A number of opportunities for further research are presented by this study in understanding drivers of public relations practices and the role of inspection forums in processes of legitimacy. For practice, there are implications of taking a longer term perspective to considering the role of public relations practices, its impact on organisational success and, therefore, how it is evaluated.

Abstract:
Business and human rights is a recurrent discussion and the literature shows that it is a common research topic. However, when it comes to Banking and human rights the academic works drop considerably. The purpose of this paper is first, measure the degree of detail and depth of the analyzed annual reports regarding the information relevant to human rights and second, check if the non-financial information or sustainability reporting of the selected banks have changed overtime. To try to answer those questions the paper makes use of a qualitative and quantitative content analysis that are based on a relevant theoretical framework for each of the questions. An extensive background on sustainability reporting is provided in order to have a linear narrative.

Abstract:
A focus of the study will be on the South African banking sector, comparing it with the CSR practices of Australian banking sector. The reason for this comparative analysis stems from the similarities that are prevalent between the two countries, although they have different designations, with one country as a developing country and the other as a developed country respectively. Both countries were once colonies. Australia was ruled by British and South Africa was ruled by Dutch and British. Both countries' financial sectors are well regulated and developed. Similar rules regarding disclosing information are applied in both countries' listed companies. The listed companies in both countries are required to disclose their social and environmental information in addition to their financial information

Navid, Sara. "Extending our understanding of Islamic banking through questioning assumptions and drawing unprecedented comparisons." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2018. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/36295.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis challenges two key assumptions made in the current Islamic banking literature. Firstly, this thesis challenges and empirically invalidates the assumption that all Islamic banks are indistinguishable from their conventional counterparts and are thus equally unIslamic. To do so, this thesis uses the profit and loss sharing (PLS) criteria, which is central to the philosophy of Islamic banking and is the key principle differentiating Islamic from conventional banking, in theory and practice. By investigating variation in PLS levels between Islamic banks and comparing with conventional banks with and without Islamic windows, this thesis illustrates that the Islamic banking industry does not comprise a homogeneous group of banks that are all indistinguishable from their conventional counterparts. Rather, a typology of Islamic banks exists, comprising of three distinct groups of banks, each one following a different business model. While one group can genuinely be considered indistinguishable from conventional banks, another group shows clear evidence of pursuing PLS-oriented strategies in formulating its asset portfolio, differentiating itself from the purely debt-based intermediation model adopted by conventional banks. As such, empirical evidence shows that some Islamic banks are, in practice, operating closer to the PLS principle and can thus be considered more Islamic than others. Further investigation illustrates that the institutional environment matters for the provision of ideal PLS Islamic financing instruments. Secondly, this thesis overcomes two methodological issues to compare the corporate social performance (CSP) of Islamic and conventional banks. In doing so, this thesis challenges the second identified assumption from the literature, that religion-specific category of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is particular to Islamic banking, and invalidates it on conceptual, theoretical and empirical basis. A novel CSP Index based on the evidence-based disclosure criteria, comprising of 6 dimensions and 25 social performance indicators is constructed and complemented with three Social Performance Quantitative Indicators (SPQIs) to compare the CSP of Islamic and conventional banks. From this comparison, this thesis concludes that, contrary to the industry s claims and expectations held of it, Islamic banking does not offer an ethical alternative to conventional banking. Differences in the level and composition of CSP between the two industries are more subtle and require a nuanced approach to be studied.

There is a noticeable growing society’s preoccupation with ethics, coming partly from the numerous scandals that came to light in the corporate world lately, especially in the financial sector in which the repercussions of embezzlements usually have a broader impact for the society than they may have when happening in other sector of activities. As another consequence, we can observe a raising interest of the academics in studying business ethics. Nevertheless, despite the very frequent use of the term and concepts related to this subject, there is still no consensus on a common definition of business ethics. It belongs to each corporation to define what it considers as corporate ethics. Therefore, in order to understand better what is behind ethics, it is necessary to go back to its definition, explain its evolution, put it in our contemporary context, and then apply it to the field of interest. Within the banking sector, ethics refers mainly to a legal aspect, but also took the path of corporate social responsibility development within the corporations, through various practices. The literature on this matter underlines that the traditional banking corporations’ approach of ethics disconnects it from their core business, considering that it does not belong to the heart of their activity. Actually, corporations respond to the same institutional isomorphism mechanisms that lead them to adopt some practices with the objective of achieving legitimacy within the society. Contrary to these traditional banking corporations, the banks qualified as ethical within the literature have in common to structure their activities on or around ethics, distinguishing themselves from other banks by having as main goal to be ethical. The Brazilian bank, Itaú Unibanco, one of the biggest traditional bank in the world in terms of market value, was progressively perceived as highly preoccupied with ethics and was recently designated as the most sustainable bank in the world by the Financial Times Magazine. Itaú Unibanco designed and implemented a program of ethics, which combines a theoretical component 8 (with guidelines, rules, principles and code of ethics), used as a framework for a practical component (with particular organizational structure and practices). Thanks to this characteristic, o Itaú Unibanco placed itself as a pro active actor that can be qualified of champion of innovation in the banking sector concerning ethics’ institutionalization.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this research is to develop and contribute with an improved understanding of socially responsible investing and its barriers within the asset management sector. To accomplish the purpose of this research, four areas have been investigated; sustainability, business models, socially responsible investing, and barriers for socially responsible investing. Method – Since the research aimed to use the existing theory, and at the same time explore and gain understanding within the area of sustainable, or responsible, investments, the research approach had iterative characteristics with theoretical and empirical findings. Therefore, an abductive research approach was chosen. For the gathering of data, a multiple case study was conducted by interviewing people working within asset management companies. For the analysis of the data, constant comparison, multilevel interviews, and thematic analysis were used. Results – First, the results indicate that socially responsible investments have greatly affected the business models for asset management companies, and responsible investments are starting to become more of a hygiene factor than a way of differentiation. Second, the most significant barrier for the increase of responsible investments is preconceptions and lack of knowledge. This barrier is rooted in an underlying issue, that is lack of transparency regarding asset management companies’ investments. Furthermore, the findings indicate that government actions within the market invested in, was not such a grand barrier as presented in the literature. Theoretical contributions – The main theoretical contribution with this research is the identification of the barrier preconceptions and lack of knowledge, as this is not highlighted in the literature, but among the asset management companies it was highly significant. By analyzing the findings with an institutional theory lens, it is an understandable behavior as there are no incentives for change, hence the managerial contributions consist of regulations.  Managerial contributions – The practical contributions with this report is the need for reformed regulations in the industry where asset management companies are operating, in order to increase transparency. By seeing the issue through the lens of institutional theory, it is unlikely for self-regulations to happen as the incentives are not great enough. For self-regulation to happen, the agency costs need to surpass the costs for increased responsible investments, as it would generate enough incentives for a change to happen.

Abstract:
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been a concept of much research in recent decades, although there is a need to deepen into the study of its benefits as a marketing tool. In order to comply with this objective, this dissertation keeps its focus on the relationship between corporate social responsibility image and customer behaviour, taking as a basis a wide review of the existing literature. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are used. Specifically, a qualitative research is carried out to study corporate identity while a quantitative research is designed to study corporate social responsibility image, its formation process and its relationship to consumer behaviour. The research takes place in the banking service sector, one of the greatest investors in corporate social responsibility in the world.

The scope of this theses is to understand the dynamics of the institutionalization of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within the Field of Banking Organizations in Brazil. Using the social analysis model put forward by Boltanski and Chiapello (1999) and reverting to the conceptual basis of the institutional approach and using Bourdieu¿s notion of interest (1996), we arrive at an analytical model that enabled us to assess CSR as part of a movement of displacement of capitalism. The theory we propose here is that with the institutionalization of CSR, actions are justified in terms of the common good, being legitimized by structural confirmations and arrangements and, at the same time, heeding the inherent interests of the Field. The means used for comprehension of the dynamics of the institutionalization of CSR were: (1) the analysis of the construction of the phenomenon of CSR, which enabled us to identify critical factors and events, leaders in Brazil and associated ratification of the institutionalization of this social practice; (2) the description of the Field of Banking Organizations and the identification of the elements of its CSR in History, which are essential steps for understanding the justifications for insertion of the Field in the movement towards CSR; (3) the identification of key players in the institutionalization of the social practice within the Field, as well as the categorization of practical actions considered socially responsible to be found in the organizations researched, analyzing them in terms of justifications and interests; (4) the analysis of the dissemination and sedimentation of structural arrangements linked to CSR in the organizations of the Field, such as specific areas created to deal with CSR, social reports and organizational websites. The field research assessed some 30 organizations and included documentary analysis and interviews. We noted that, from being a marginal and isolated action, over the course of the past decade CSR has become a structured action in banking organizations, while at the same time becoming transformed into a social value, capable of contributing to the legitimacy of the Field. In this respect, research showed that retail banks are those that are inserted in the movement towards CSR, which ratifies the thesis of the phenomenon as displacement of capitalism.

Abstract:
Background: Concurrently, as the importance of Employer Branding has increased over the past decades, Swedish banks have reached an all-time low customer satisfaction and suffer from a lack of trust. The latest entrants to the workforce, Generation Y, have shown unique demands and wants from their employer, where they generally value working for a company contributing to society. These factors indicate a future problematic situation where Swedish banks may have difficulties attracting and retaining the most suitable talents from Generation Y.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how companies within the Swedish banking industry work with Employer Branding. In addition, the intent is to examine how actors in the Swedish banking industry adapt their Employer Branding to better meet the needs and wants of Generation Y, in order to attract and retain talents from this age category.Method: A qualitative study with interpretivist philosophy, where four interviews have been conducted with large actors in the Swedish banking industry. Conclusion: Findings show that Swedish banks are aware of the necessity to differentiate themselves as employers and they perceive their efforts to diversify as successful. In addition, communicating the brand accurately through social media is highly important. Further, the empirical data shows some recognition of the different characteristics of Generation Y. However, Swedish banks only adjust their Employer Branding to a limited degree in order to specifically target Generation Y.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a case study of a company of the Brazilian banking sector, which sought to highlight the alignment of corporate social responsibility (CSR) actions of Banco do Brasil with the theoretical framework on the subject, based on the observation of increasing interest by investors, companies, governments and academia on the subject, the development of performance indices related to sustainability, as well as a greater valuation on the Stock Exchanges of companies that are aware of the importance and include CSR in their business. After analyzing the literature and the public documents of the Bank, the study revealed that the initiatives of Banco do Brasil, ratified by adherence to national and international treaties and agreements, are part of its strategic position and established a new management model, based on sustainability of business and relationships with all stakeholders, indicating the alignment of the Bank with the theory.

Strategic Communication, and has the main purpose of analyzing practices, proposals and recommendations concerning existing volunteering and internal communication in the banking sector, particularly in Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD), where an internship in communication and volunteering was carried out. The main objective was to analyze and answer to the following question: “How can internal communication promote social responsibility, particularly regarding corporate volunteering in the banking sector?” To answer to that question, as a research method, a mixed methodology based on qualitative and quantitative data was performed. The main techniques used consisted on interviews and questionnaires, as well as participant observation. After analyzing the case study, a conclusion was reached: internal communication in CGD is crucial to the success of the business. Internal communication can be seen as a way to promote and disclose actions of corporate volunteering. Another conclusion points out that the most important is not the implementation of more volunteering actions in CGD, but a better optimization and management of such actions. The actions that have greater impact are the ones directed to the core business of the organization.

The main purpose of this thesis was to analyze the dissemination of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and to examine its determinants and consequences for the Islamic banks of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In the fulfillment of the research objectives, 40 Islamic banks from the countries that make up the GCC were analyzed during the period from 2013 to 2017, which involved 200 observations to each group. With regard to CSR, an index was constructed to measure the level of disclosure in Islamic banks and conventional banks, based on 11 dimensions recommended by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOFI) No. 7 published in 2010 (1985), Ismail (1986), and Dusuki (2008), were used in the literature on the dissemination of CSR. Statistical analysis included econometric regressions using the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to examine the determinants and consequences of CSR disclosure in the sample selection of banks. The results indicated a level of disclosure of Islamic RSC of 41.05%, higher than the level of its conventional peers in the region that reached a mark of 30.65%. Using Corporate Governance (CG) mechanisms to measure the determinants of CSR disclosure, the survey found a positive and significant association between the disclosure of CSR and the size of the Board of Directors of the Islamic banks studied. Thus, evidence is provided that stronger corporate governance is associated with a higher level of CSR disclosure. Another result found was the significantly negative relationship of the CEO's Duality (CEOD) and the Audit Committee Size (ACS) with the disclosure of CSR. However, the results did not show a significant association between disclosure of CSR and other variables of corporate governance. To examine the economic consequences of CSR disclosure in Islamic and conventional banks, the study used two different proxies (Market to Book Value and Tobin's Q) to measure the value of the firm. The study found no significant relationship between the proxies analyzed. It is suggested that there is a strong need to improve the current CSR disclosure practice, especially in the Islamic banks of the GCC, imposing additional restrictions on the characteristics of the Board of Directors. The results corroborate the global debate on the need for corporate governance reform, providing insights into the role-played by corporate governance mechanisms in encouraging and enhancing CSR disclosure practices and opens up fertile ground for studies involving the influence of religious roots on practices

Abstract:
Recently, bankers have come to realise that banking operations, especially corporate lending, affect and are affected by the natural environment and that consequently, the banks might have an important role to play in helping to raise environmental standards. Although the environment presents significant risks to banks, in particular environmental credit risk, it also perhaps presents profitable opportunities. Stricter environmental regulations have forced companies to invest in environmentally friendly technologies and pollution control measures and in tum generated lending opportunities for bankers. This research examines the corporate practices of three of the four dominant banks in South Africa with respect to the environment, focusing on issues of climate change and environmental risk management by way of reporting and disclosure to all stakeholders. The emphasis on environmental reporting by South African banks has been reinforced by the latest release of the King III Report on Corporate Governance in South Africa. Global governance requires that the triple-bottom line should be applied in all corporate undertakings due to globalisation and trade liberalisation; however, the banking sector has responded poorly to the clarion call. The false view that the banks have no significant relationship with environmental degradation is being disproved. Environmental management is a huge and massive reconstruction of what has gone wrong with nature by human influence. The South African banks have had to face with the challenging tasks of reporting on the direct and mostly the indirect impacts of their environmental activities. Based on the three sampled banks which incidentally had greater percentages of the market capitalizations, the banks have fairly performed in environmental reporting. For example, Standard Bank (SA) Ltd has just signed the Equator Principles in 2007 implying corporate lending was done in 2007 without any respect to environmental impact assessments by corporate borrowers. Consequently, environmental reporting was not done to facilitate informed decision-making by stakeholders mostly shareholders and the communities where borrowers tun businesses. The objective of this research study is to investigate the extent and quantity of/voluntary environmental disclosures in the annual and sustainability reports of the banks listed on Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The periods examined were those subsequent to the release of the Exposure Draft Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) issued in 1999. Using content analysis to focus on the environmental aspects, the research study compared three annual reports and three sustainability reports of 2007 year for the three sampled banks in order to evaluate reporting practices in the period surrounding this intervention. The results suggest a trend to triple bottom-line reporting and the extent and quantity of environmental information, albeit in specific categories.

My diploma thesis is about social entrepreneurship in the banking sector. The thesis has two parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part I examine the social entrepreneurship in general, i.e meaning of altruism in entrepreneurship. The ambit of my interest is interesting also because for-profit and non-for-profit organizations operate or operated on the same market. The practical part contains several case studies of "social banking" institutions. Concretely, I chose charitable banks in Italy and Spain emerging in 15th century, furthermore kampeličky and Raiffeisen cooperatives, microcredit and P-to-P lending. I try to answer the question whether the "social banking" is a meaningful concept and whether we can find in history some development leading to the current form of microcredit.

Abstract:
Over the past decade banks repeatedly made headlines with severe cases of business misconduct. Several high profile political inquiries sought to ascertain responsibility for the malfeasance but concluded that responsibility could not unequivocally be attributed. Considering that the responsibility principle constitutes a normative element which should guide social interaction, its evasion can lead to social distortions. The purpose of the thesis is threefold. First, it seeks to explore the responsibility practices in banking; second, it considers the mechanisms of responsibility evasion; and third, it discusses the power relations guiding responsible business conduct. Academic research typically considers corporate responsibility from two perspectives. At the meso level responsibility is framed in terms of corporate governance; at the micro level individual and team responsibilities are studied. This thesis offers a different perspective and discusses responsibility in terms of practice, which comprises responsibility constitution and responsibility attribution. In an organisational context responsibility is arranged in terms of role and task responsibilities and corporate culture, while responsibility attributions refer to the interpretations and judgements of social conduct. The analysis draws on the concept of 'agencement' which describes a heterogeneous compendium of different devices that act on and modify each other (Pollock and Williams, 2009). Ontologically, ANT views realities as multiple and fluid and the question of which reality takes precedence is a matter of power relations. For the analysis a methodological tool, the responsibility map, has been developed and applied to three case studies, namely the mis-selling of PPI, trader manipulation of LIBOR and low-balling of LIBOR. Operating under the principles of financialisation, banks have internalised financial benefits while negative outcomes were externalised. Responsibility attribution for the misconduct was systematically evaded. The mechanisms of responsibility diffusion are closely tied to the business strategies: retail banks proceduralised responsibility; it became invested in meeting sales targets. Investment banks operated at the forefront of LIBOR manipulations. Handling the LIBOR rate setting process in an informal manner created responsibility gaps. In both environments the regulatory regimes in place proved ineffective. It is argued that corporate irresponsibility must be considered as a recurrent theme if banking remains organised in terms of financialised business models. The thesis presents a novel approach to the study of organisational responsibility. The methodological tool developed for this research can be adapted to study responsibility in other corporate contexts. Given that the current business models are flawed as they create an environment that condones irresponsible conduct the thesis concludes with suggestions for policy making.

Abstract:

Introduction: The society is becoming more aware of the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) work. CSR has also be-come a competitive tool in order to reach out to potential cus-tomers. There are also many definitions of what CSR actually means. These are things that makes it interesting to find out how multinational corporations, who has a lot of power, per-ceive and work with CSR, as well as what can be done to make corporations work more with CSR.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to describe what CSR as a con-cept means, whose responsibility it is, as well as why corpora-tions work with it. We also intend to find out what it takes to make CSR a more prevailing and decisive instrument for cor-porations?

Method: We conducted six unstructed interviews with multinational corporations in Sweden.

Conclusion: Today the phenomena of CSR has no unified definition, this is why we believe that a definition that is precise in describing what CSR is can be useful. We think that transparency is something important since information provided to the pub-lic, provides consumers and stakeholders with power to make information based investment, and purchase decisions. We have also concluded that we think that the most important factor in driving the CSR work forward and making it grow in size, is to make consumers reward the corporations that per-form well in their CSR activities.

Abstract:
Background: Today, most companies have recognized the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and regularly communicating the work with stakeholders. Since CSR lacks a uniform definition and thus also a uniform model to work for, it creates uncertainties about the purpose of the work. Companies who only do symbolic actions to be perceived as good citizens of the community can then use CSR as PR. It can therefore be questioned how well CSR is integrated into the core business. However, it has been an increasing number of legal requirements and standards in the area, potentially creating a clearer framework but also another approach.   Purpose: The purpose of this study is to gain a greater understanding of CSR as a concept and then see how companies work to integrate CSR into core business and why. The study also looks at the impact of increased regulation, to see if views on CSR have changed.   Method: The study has primarily a qualitative research strategy with a deductive approach that stands on previous studies. The companies studied are Lammhult Design Group AB and Electra AB. As a data collection method, I have conducted semi-structured interviews with responsible managers, but also a staff survey. I have also used the homepages websites and annual and sustainability reports.   Outcome and conclusion: It is not as important to find a unified definition of CSR in today's society. The concept of CSR has been replaced by sustainability, which is considered as a broader term. Furthermore, it is a slow process of integrating CSR into core business, where internal voice, education, routines and information are of particular importance. By maintaining sustainability at the forefront companies can avoid pressure such as legal requirements.

Abstract:
The environment, the humanitarian causes, the equality in its various senses and the other issues of social importance are themes that have awakened, pointing as a priority in the future (and in the present). In companies, this can be translated into Social Responsibility. And among all sectors, the banking sector has stood out. Responsibility in the Banking Sector is a topic of growing interest and whose study lacks a more methodological basis. Banks depend on the trust of society and can change social behavior through their activity criteria. This dissertation contributes to the clarification of the concepts and quantitatively accesses the potential financial impact of the Social Responsibility on the profitability of the banks. The results of this study suggest that Social Responsibility does not harm the financial profitability of most banks. However, it suggests that impact is significantly different between large banks and small banks as, ceteris paribus, a Social Responsibility improves the financial profitability of larger banks.

Abstract:
Yeboah, D. Corporate Social Responsibility in the Ghanaian Banking Industry. Diploma Thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2020. This diploma thesis topic refers to a new concept which is Corporate Social Responsibility in the Ghanaian banking industry. In developing countries of which Ghana is no exception, the CSR concept is still at the developing stage. This thesis was conducted with two key specific objectives, which are: first to assess the current CSR situation of selected banks which are: Barclays Bank of Ghana and Raiffeisen Bank of the Czech Republic, with the aim of reviewing their CSR initiatives and projects towards the society. Secondly, to assess the reporting model of CSR activities using GRI methodology. Secondary data in the form of CSR reports and information sourced from various websites of the banks were used and analyzed. It was found that both banks engaged in several initiatives including education, youth empowerment, entrepreneurship and environmental projects which ensures the greater welfare of the people, society and the environment. In respect of the second objective, it was found that banks present comprehensive reports which captured most of the GRI methodology which suggest that CSR reports look better now when compared to those presented in years before this review. However, in a more specific sense, Barclays Bank Ghana Ltd did not include; energy, emission, effluents and waste, details of employment, product and services responsibility which were a significant part of the GRI methodology. As a result, this study recommends a review of the reporting model used by Barclays Bank to capture most of not all the GRI indicators. Moreover, both banks are encouraged to engage in partnerships with other specialized organisations order to produce high-quality CSR initiatives, projects and reports.

After the outbreak of the American subprime mortgage crisis in 2007, the bad creditor’s rights lamed the banks in America and made the financial system of the U.S. fall on the verge of collapse. The financial crisis spread up quickly like domino from USA to the whole world. After the Lehman’s Brothers’ declaration of bankruptcy, it hollowed countless investors worldwide and stood out the important impact of fulfillment of the banking corporate social responsibility to country’s economic development and stability. Because the concept of corporate social responsibility is getting great attention, enterprises no longer take profit and creation of the greatest wealth for shareholders as the ultimate goal. Moreover, the scope of social responsibility includes not only the facet of social welfare but also business staff, suppliers, community residents, and etc. Therefore, fulfilling the social responsibility can lower the operational risk of enterprises in the identical and competitive markets. The study, according to “Corporate Citizenship Award (CSR)” of World Magazine in 2013, refers to the UN Global Compact, OECD MNE guidance program, the U.S. Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and other international indicators and evaluation methods to probe into the influential factors of fulfillment of the corporate social responsibility of banking in Taiwan in four dimensions, “Corporate Governance”, “Corporate commitment”, “Social Participation”, and “Environment protection”. After the questionnaire of the Delphi method for the first stage and the Analytic Hierarchy process (AHP) for the second stage, it shows that the dimension of “Corporate Governance”, mainly measuring independence of board of directors and transparency of company, is the most valued by the experts interviewed, and “Corporate Commitment” to Staff and clients is the second.

‘Making money is the only corporate social responsibility to an enterprise!’ The statement is no longer an irrefutable truth now. ‘Corporate social responsibility’ has already become one of the vocabularies between the multinational corporation managers. Looking into the industrial property, banking is the trigger of the development of whole society and economy, so if the society would march toward to continuous growth, banking can’t be excluded, furthermore, should take the lead and help other industries to march toward the development. Overall, this research mainly focuses on ‘Corporate Ethics’, ‘Corporate Morality’ and ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ of Taipei Banking staff. We can see from the research that the banking with better reputation places more importance of practice of corporate social responsibility; the employee with longer service seniority approves the promise of corporate responsibility. It is expected that the research can be provided to the banking enterprises to strengthen their advantages, improve their shortages, and be the reference for strategy decision. 300 questionnaires have been sent out to Taipei public, private and multinational banks for the research. Recovery rate is 91.66% with 275 questionnaires. Among them, 253 are valid. The recovery rate of valid questionnaire is 84.33%. Research and analysis find out that: 1. Corporate Ethics is significant to Corporate Social Responsibility 2. Corporate Morality is significant to Corporate Social Responsibility 3. The service seniority is significant to Corporate Social Responsibility

Over recent years there have been mounting social, political and economic pressures on corporate management to pay greater attention to the wider social and environmental consequences of corporate activities in decision-making process. The sudden explosion of corporate accounting scandals and related financial irregularities that burst over the financial markets between late 2001 and the first half of 2002, e.g. Enron. In one of life delicious ironies, Enron has given advocates of corporate social responsibility what they have long sought the quintessential business case. The unique contribution of the study is the empirical analysis of a sample of companies from banking industry and use of loan loss provision as earnings management measure. This study examines systematic differences in earning management and corporate social responsibility across three areas from1992 to 2002.

This study examines the effect of corporate social responsibility on bank financial performance. First of all, original sample of this study is selected from the banks listed in Central Bank of Taiwan from 2007 to 2014. This paper also uses the 1st to 8th Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility TOP 50 released annually by renowned magazines in Taiwan, namely, Common Wealth Magazine, as a benchmark for the performance of corporate social responsibility. Moreover, we use return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), operation income per employee (OIPE), non-performing loan (NPL), stock return and bank of international settlement (BIS) as the variables of financial performance. In order to elevate the reliability of research result, total asset and debt ratio are used as the control variables of these models. Finally, we adopt multiple linear regression method to analyze research results. Our findings show that:(1) There are significant positive correlation between bank taking CSR and their ROA, ROE and OIPE, which support the social impact hypothesis ,the good management theory and the managerial guile theory. (2) There is significant negative correlation between bank taking CSR and their non-performing loan. (3) There is no significant relationship between CSR and stock return, supporting the supply and demand theory of the firm. In conclusion, the analysis represents that the corporate social responsibility positively influences bank financial performance.

The Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TWSE) announced that specified listed companies would start mandatory corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting annually from 2014. Accordingly, this study organized CSR reports issued by listed and over-the-counter companies to determine whether these companies fulfilled their CSR, the extent to which they disclosed such information, and whether banking companies fulfilling their CSR had a positive effect on their business performance. Statistical data compiled in 2017 show that most companies issued CSR reports only to comply with regulations, and that has half of the CSR reports were not certified by a third party. The focus of the banking industry’s CSR reports varies with social trends and events each year and generally includes basic corporate governance overview and integrity management with gradual incorporation of employee training, information security, and law compliance. Green finance and environmental protection remain topics that are rarely addressed. This study divided the companies into different groups on the basis of whether they signed the Equator Principles and whether they voluntarily prepared CSR reports. Subsequently, the financial performance, corporate governance, and company–employee relationships of these company groups were analyzed. The results showed that banks that were more involved in CSR showed superior business performance.

The evolution of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility has created a lot of debate in the modern world. In the financial world, the engagement in social responsible activities, such as, providing guidelines on sustainability, environmental impact reduction, donations to charitable causes or supporting communities have become a common practice for the vast majority of financial institutions. Islamic Financial Institutions, due to its religious bond, are bound to operate in a system that places social goals at the same level, or even above, of financial goals. Actually, the ethical system and values of Islam, alongside the Shari‘ah law, provide a natural framework of social responsibility for Islamic Financial Institutions. Besides the most common characteristics of Corporate Social Responsibility, there are some singular and unique to the Islamic Financial Institutions, for instance, the collection and distribution of Zakat, the establishment of Qard-Hassan and distribution policy (for social reasons) and the management of Waqf properties on behalf of clients. The unique characteristics of these institutions are present in their everyday activities with a strong focus of the prohibition of interest (riba), prohibited (haram) activities and avoidance of uncertainty/speculation (gahrar) and, on the other hand, the offer of products that are Shari‘ah compliant, notably, profit-andloss sharing arrangements. To understand if the literature concerning Islamic Corporate Social Responsibility matches the actual practices of Islamic Financial Institutions, a study of four published surveys, by renowned authors, was undertaken and the conclusions and implications for the future of Islamic Financial Institutions were drawn.

In the course of firms serving their own interest of securing financial profit, there is a responsibility to take action in protecting and enhancing the interest of the society in which they operate, with the total endeavour and effect of improving the quality of life. This is often done by giving back to the society in the form of community involvement projects. The main objective of this study is:  To investigate the extent to which the value chain in employee volunteering - community involvement programmes is understood and fully optimised from these stakeholders‟ perspective. There were three types of respondent groups within the entire population of Choma, involved in this study. Firstly, there was a respondent group of five senior CSR managers at Choma who manage and co-ordinate all CSR activities within the bank. They have full knowledge of the scope of Choma CSR stated objectives and what is happening in the context of Choma CSI projects, and can thus give valuable insight to the Choma CSI projects‟ current state, including successes and challenges. Two CSR projects were selected by these senior CSR managers, where one was really outstanding and one was also completed, but not considered as valuable in attaining Choma CSR objectives as good as the first. The first group of respondents are members who were actively involved in Project 1 from Choma RBB operations, while the second group was involved in Project 2, from RBB Choma personal loans. Three employees were interviewed from each project. These projects were executed in two different communities leading to two additional respondent samples drawn from the two communities. Two community members were interviewed from each community. This provides three views of the research problem and a triangulation from three different sources of CSR value to a community. All interviews were face-to-face in the respective offices of the respondents by scheduled appointments.

This study proposes to investigate the extent to which personal banking consumers of community banks perceive that there is a relationship between the quality of banking services they receive and the principles that govern socially responsible practices. Specifically, the study investigates the extent to which retail banking consumers of selected two different community banks in Tshwane attribute their levels of (dis) contentment (as surrogates of perceptions) to the community banking services provided to them in the context of well known Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles

The main purpose of this study is to assess the level of corporate social responsibility (hereafter CSR) disclosure in the Mongolian banking sector and determine how they are engaging in CSR activities. Furthermore, this study analyzes the association between corporate financial performance (hereafter CFP) in terms of return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), net interest margin (NIM) and non-performing loan ratio (NPL) and the CSR implementation based on CSR disclosure indices. The study utilizes the secondary data from the annual reports and BankScope database from 2003 to 2012. There are 65 annual reports and 12 banks being analyzed. The results from descriptive statistics find that Mongolian banks are more aggressively engaged in CSR activities in most recent years. Throughout this study, the findings show that there is a significant positive relationship between CSR measured by Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting Disclosure (CSRRD) and Corporate Social Responsibility Qualitative (CSRQD) and CFP measured by NIM. Moreover, both CSRRD and CSRQD are statistically negatively associated with bank financial performance in terms of NPL. The results of T- test indicate that the banks with higher CSR tend to have higher ROE and NIM and lower NPL. In addition, bank board leadership structure (CEO duality) and bank size (total asset and number of branches) are significantly and positively associated with CSR. Interestingly, the results of the regression analysis suggest that CSR is more strongly associated with bank financial performance measured by ROA, ROE, NIM and NPL before the financial crisis in 2008. However, the relationships between CSR and CFP measured by ROA and ROE are weaker in Mongolian banking sector after the financial crisis.
