Abstract:
Abstract This book examines the human costs of care and caring and how these are reproduced across generations—a topic often overlooked in the theoretical analysis of the issue. It explores the multiple facets of social reproductive work and argues that this work has significant human costs, which are neglected. Unrecognized, depletion erodes individual lives as well as social institutions and our environment (family, community groups, and ecologies), and is generative of harm—historic, present, and anticipatory—at each of these levels. Consent does not mitigate harm. Recognition of depletion

This chapter presents numerous short folktales that pertain to the topic of gender, and includes analysis of gender sub issues, such as flute playing and the reversal of social order, flute playing and gender specificity, and flutes and gender specificity. In most world cultures during modern times, traditional flute playing is limited to men rather than women; North American concert music traditions are an exception, however. This has not always been the case. According to what we can learn from mythology, women at one time were the original flute players, but they had their flutes taken away

Abstract:
In the period 1894 to 1902 Saxons demonstrated that the expansion of voting rights could be slowed and actually reversed. This chapter shows how right-wing politicians, statesmen, municipal councilors, and others used a perceived crisis following political assassinations in mid-1894 to refocus middle-class fears on the “threat” of socialism. At the national level, calls for a coup d’état against the Reichstag dovetailed with less dramatic calls to action against Social Democracy. When these appeals yielded meager results, Saxons responded by passing a reform of their Landtag’s suffrage in 1896

Abstract:
This brief concluding chapter includes a summary of the book’s main points, chapter by chapter. It also includes a brief meditation on the portion of John’s gospel, John 13:1–17, in which Jesus serves his disciples by washing their feet. The act itself expresses humility, a fact that is underscored by the reversal of social roles that it exemplifies. It is especially striking that Jesus washes the feet of Judas, who would soon betray him. This reversal of social roles not only exemplifies the moral virtue of humility, it also provides a model for followers of Christ to imitate in daily life. T

Abstract:
The secularization paradigm argues that the decline of religion in the West is an unintended consequence of a variety of complex social changes known as modernization. Without a dramatic reversal of the increasing cultural autonomy of the individual, secularization is irreversible. In the stable affluent democracies of the West, the individual asserts the rights of the sovereign autonomous consumer. In the absence of social forces eroding that freedom, creation of a detailed ideological consensus is not possible, and no amount of vague spiritual yearning will generate a shared belief system. T

Abstract:
This chapter presents a case study regarding East Germany after reunification, and frames it in terms of a larger and interdisciplinary inquiry into what demilitarization is all about. Narrow conceptions of demilitarization that are centered solely on the destruction of weapons fetishize weapons, and these narrow views obscure analysis of the social relations and cultural constructions upon which militarization programs are dependent. Demilitarization implies a reversal of an implicit process or program—an unraveling—of ways of thinking and sensing that made a military solution thinkable and d

This book will cover the time span from the first indications of El Nino (May 1997) until its reversal (June 1998). The focus will be largely on the United States, where El Nino produced widespread changes in how the public perceives weather and in the accuracy of forecasts Among the key issues it will examine are how the news media interpreted and dramatixed El Nino and the reaction both of the public and decision-makers (the latter based on interviews with agribusiness, utilities, water management agencies, etc.); the scientific issues emerging from the event; and the social and economic con
